Abstract

A common approach to detecting weak signals or minute quantities involves leveraging on the localized spectral features of resonant modes, where sharper lines (i.e. high Q-factors) enhance transduction sensitivity. However, maximizing the Q-factor often introduced technical challenges in fabrication and design. In this work, we propose an alternative strategy to achieve sharper spectral features by using interference and nonlinearity, all while maintaining a constant dissipation rate. Using far-infrared thermomechanical detectors as a test case, we demonstrate that signal transduction along an engineered response curve slope effectively reduces the detector's noise equivalent power (NEP). This method, combined with an optimized absorbing layer, achieves sub-pW NEP for electrical read-out detectors operating in the sub-THz range., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

The Belle II experiment at the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider aims to collect an unprecedented data set of $50~{\rm ab}^{-1}$ to study $CP$-violation in the $B$-meson system and to search for Physics beyond the Standard Model. SuperKEKB is already the world's highest-luminosity collider. In order to collect the planned data set within approximately one decade, the target is to reach a peak luminosity of $\rm 6 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ by further increasing the beam currents and reducing the beam size at the interaction point by squeezing the betatron function down to $\beta^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.3~mm$. To ensure detector longevity and maintain good reconstruction performance, beam backgrounds must remain well controlled. We report on current background rates in Belle II and compare these against simulation. We find that a number of recent refinements have significantly improved the background simulation accuracy. Finally, we estimate the safety margins going forward. We predict that backgrounds should remain high but acceptable until a luminosity of at least $\rm 2.8 \times 10^{35}~cm^{-2}s^{-1}$ is reached for $\beta^{*}_{\rm y}=\rm 0.6~mm$. At this point, the most vulnerable Belle II detectors, the Time-of-Propagation (TOP) particle identification system and the Central Drift Chamber (CDC), have predicted background hit rates from single-beam and luminosity backgrounds that add up to approximately half of the maximum acceptable rates., Comment: 28 pages, 17 figures, 9 tables (revised); in v3, we corrected Table 5 units for the measured fast neutron fluence by the TPC detectors from x10^9 n_eq/cm^2 to x10^8 n_eq/cm^2, which was a typo in the previous versions; also, we added the value of the luminosity for Tables 5 and 6

Abstract

We designed, constructed and have been operating a system based on single-crystal synthetic diamond sensors, to monitor the beam losses at the interaction region of the SuperKEKB asymmetric-energy electron-positron collider. The system records the radiation dose-rates in positions close to the inner detectors of the Belle II experiment, and protects both the detector and accelerator components against destructive beam losses, by participating in the beam-abort system. It also provides complementary information for the dedicated studies of beam-related backgrounds. We describe the performance of the system during the commissioning of the accelerator and during the first physics data taking.

Abstract

The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron-positron collider is expected to result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgrounds in the interaction region. Properly simulating and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle~II experiment. We report on measurements performed with a suite of dedicated beam background detectors, collectively known as BEAST II, during the so-called Phase 1 commissioning run of SuperKEKB in 2016, which involved operation of both the high energy ring (HER) of 7 GeV electrons as well as the low energy ring (LER) of 4 GeV positrons. We describe the BEAST II detector systems, the simulation of beam backgrounds, and the measurements performed. The measurements include standard ones of dose rates versus accelerator conditions, and more novel investigations, such as bunch-by-bunch measurements of injection backgrounds and measurements sensitive to the energy spectrum and angular distribution of fast neutrons. We observe beam-gas, Touschek, beam-dust, and injection backgrounds. We do not observe significant synchrotron radiation, as expected. Measured LER beam-gas backgrounds and Touschek backgrounds in both rings are slightly elevated, on average three times larger than the levels predicted by simulation. HER beam-gas backgrounds are on on average two orders of magnitude larger than predicted. Systematic uncertainties and channel-to-channel variations are large, so that these excesses constitute only 1-2 sigma level effects. Neutron background rates are higher than predicted and should be studied further. We will measure the remaining beam background processes, due to colliding beams, in the imminent commissioning Phase 2. These backgrounds are expected to be the most critical for Belle II, to the point of necessitating replacement of detector components during the Phase 3 (full-luminosity) operation of SuperKEB., Comment: 101 pages, 127 figures

Abstract

The XAFS beamline at Elettra Synchrotron in Trieste combines X-ray absorption spectroscopy and X-ray diffraction to provide chemically specific structural information of materials. It operates in the energy range 2.4-27 keV by using a silicon double reflection Bragg monochromator. The fluorescence measurement is performed in place of the absorption spectroscopy when the sample transparency is too low for transmission measurements or the element to study is too diluted in the sample. We report on the development and on the preliminary tests of a new prototype detector based on Silicon Drift Detectors technology and the SIRIO ultra low noise front-end ASIC. The new system will be able to reduce drastically the time needed to perform fluorescence measurements, while keeping a short dead time and maintaining an adequate energy resolution to perform spectroscopy. Abstract

Besides a drastic reduction in saturation magnetization of disordered Sr2FeMoO6 compared to highly ordered samples, magnetizations as a function of the temperature for different disordered samples may also show qualitatively different behaviors. We investigate the origin of such diversity by performing spatially resolved photoemission spectroscopy on various disordered samples. Our results establish that extensive electronic inhomogeneity, arising most probably from an underlying chemical inhomogeneity in disordered samples is responsible for the observed magnetic inhomogeneity. It is further pointed out that these inhomogeneities are connected with composition fluctuations of the type Sr2Fe1+xMo1-xO6 with Fe-rich (x>0) and Mo-rich (x<0) regions., Comment: 14 pages, 4 figures

Abstract

We use a spatially resolved, direct spectroscopic probe for electronic structure with an additional sensitivity to chemical compositions to investigate high-quality single crystal samples of La_{1/4}Pr_{3/8}Ca_{3/8}MnO_{3}, establishing the formation of distinct insulating domains embedded in the metallic host at low temperatures. These domains are found to be at least an order of magnitude larger in size compared to previous estimates and exhibit memory effects on temperature cycling in the absence of any perceptible chemical inhomogeneity, suggesting long-range strains as the probable origin., Comment: 8 pages of text and figures. Abstract

The PERCIVAL detector is a CMOS imager designed for the soft X-ray regime at photon sources. Although still in its final development phase, it has recently seen its first user experiments: ptychography at a free-electron laser, holographic imaging at a storage ring and preliminary tests on X-ray photon correlation spectroscopy. The detector performed remarkably well in terms of spatial resolution achievable in the sample plane, owing to its small pixel size, large active area and very large dynamic range; but also in terms of its frame rate, which is significantly faster than traditional CCDs. In particular, it is the combination of these features which makes PERCIVAL an attractive option for soft X-ray science.

Abstract

The Silicon Vertex Detector of Belle II is a state-of-the-art tracking and vertexing system based on double-sided silicon strip sensors, designed and fabricated by a large international collaboration in the period 2012--2018. Since 2019 it has been in operation providing high quality data with a small number of defective channels (99%), a good signal-to-noise ratio (well in excess of 10 for all sensor configurations and tracks). Together with the good control over the alignment, these are all essential factors to achieve good tracking reconstruction and physics performance. Abstract

La produzione di energia elettrica da fonti rinnovabili potrebbe sostituire quella da combustibili fossili, ma il supporto di sistemi termici è attualmente inevitabile per la mancanza di dispositivi affidabili della taglia richiesta da applicazioni civili, trasportistiche ed industriali. La ricerca accademica e industriale è pertanto attivamente impegnata nell’identificazione di nuove strategie di accumulo, specialmente di tipo elettrochimico. Fra le tipologie di batteria in studio, i sistemi Zn-aria sono fra i più promettenti per ragioni di sicurezza, reperibilità delle materie prime, costo e sostenibilità. Questa memoria espone i recenti sviluppi nell’ambito delle celle a combustibile Zn-aria (ZAFC) basati sull’esperienza degli autori nella costruzione ed esercizio di un sistema di 1a generazione ZAFC-G1 (1). Dall’analisi delle criticità di ZAFC-G1 è stato possibile da una parte implementare migliorie cha hanno portato a un aumento della densità di potenza di un fattore 2,5, dall’altra si è riprogettato e realizzato tramite stampa 3D un sistema ottimizzato per alte densità di potenza e maggiore durabilità.

Abstract

The production of electrical energy from renewable sources can in principle replace the current technologies based on fossil fuels. Nevertheless, source integration with thermal systems cannot be avoided at the moment, owing to the lack of safe, reliable and efficient large-scale storage devices. In particular, storage systems for the power scales required for practical civil, automotive and industrial applications are not available presently. Among the battery technologies being actively investigated, the Zn-air system is highly promising since the anodic material is safe, widely accessible, low-cost, easily recyclable and environmentally benign. This paper expounds recent developments in the field of Zn-air fuel cells (ZAFC). Based on the experience accumulated with a 1st-generation ZAFC (1) on the one hand, we have implemented a series of improvements that have allowed to increase the power density by a factor of 2.5 and on the other hand, we have completely re-designed a 2nd-generation device for high power density and better durability and built by additive manufacturing.

Abstract

X-ray computed micro-tomography (μCT) is one of the most advanced and common non-destructive techniques in the field of medical imaging and material science. It allows recreating virtual models (3D models), without destroying the original objects, by measuring three-dimensional X-ray attenuation coefficient maps of samples on the (sub) micrometer scale. The quality of the images obtained using μCT is strongly dependent on the performance of the associated X-ray detector i.e. to the acquisition of information of the X-ray beam traversing the patient/sample being precise and accurate. Detectors for μCT have to meet the requirements of the specific tomography procedure in which they are going to be used. In general, the key parameters are high spatial resolution, high dynamic range, uniformity of response, high contrast sensitivity, fast acquisition readout and support of high frame rates. At present the detection devices in commercial μCT scanners are dominated by charge-coupled devices (CCD), photodiode arrays, CMOS acquisition circuits and more recently by hybrid pixel detectors. Monolithic CMOS imaging sensors, which offer reduced pixel sizes and low electronic noise, are certainly excellent candidates for μCT and may be used for the development of novel high-resolution imaging applications. The uses of monolithic CMOS based detectors such as the PERCIVAL detector are being recently explored for synchrotron and FEL applications. PERCIVAL was developed to operate in synchrotron and FEL facilities in the soft X-ray regime from 250 eV to 1 keV and it could offer all the aforementioned technical requirements needed in μCT experiments. In order to adapt the system for a typical tomography application, a scintillator is required, to convert incoming X-ray radiation (∼ tens of KeV) into visible light which may be detected with high efficiency. Abstract

The production of electrical energy from renewable sources can in principle replace the current technologies based on fossil fuels. Nevertheless, source integration with thermal systems cannot be avoided at the moment, owing to the lack of safe, reliable and efficient large-scale storage devices. In particular, storage systems for the power scales required for practical civil, automotive and industrial applications are not available presently. Among the battery technologies being actively investigated, the Zn-air system is highly promising since the anodic material is safe, widely accessible, low-cost, easily recyclable and environmentally benign. This paper expounds recent developments in the field of Zn-air fuel cells (ZAFC). Based on the experience accumulated with a 1st-generation ZAFC (1) on the one hand, we have implemented a series of improvements that have allowed to increase the power density by a factor of 2.5 and on the other hand, we have completely re-designed a 2nd-generation device for high power density and better durability and built by additive manufacturing.

Abstract

Nuclear instruments & methods in physics research / A Accelerators, spectrometers, detectors and associated equipment Section A A914, 69 - 144 (2019). doi:10.1016/j.nima.2018.05.071, The high design luminosity of the SuperKEKB electron–positron collider is expected to result in challenging levels of beam-induced backgrounds in the interaction region. Properly simulating and mitigating these backgrounds is critical to the success of the Belle II experiment. We report on measurements performed with a suite of dedicated beam background detectors, collectively known as BEAST II, during the so-called Phase 1 commissioning run of SuperKEKB in 2016, which involved operation of both the high energy ring (HER) of 7 GeV electrons as well as the low energy ring (LER) of 4 GeV positrons. We describe the BEAST II detector systems, the simulation of beam backgrounds, and the measurements performed. The measurements include standard ones of dose rates versus accelerator conditions, and more novel investigations, such as bunch-by-bunch measurements of injection backgrounds and measurements sensitive to the energy spectrum and angular distribution of fast neutrons. We observe beam–gas, Touschek, beam–dust, and injection backgrounds. As there is no final focus of the beams in Phase 1, we do not observe significant synchrotron radiation, as expected. Measured LER beam–gas backgrounds and Touschek backgrounds in both rings are slightly elevated, on average three times larger than the levels predicted by simulation. HER beam–gas backgrounds are on average two orders of magnitude larger than predicted. Systematic uncertainties and channel-to-channel variations are large, so that these excesses constitute only 1–2 sigma level effects. Neutron background rates are higher than predicted and should be studied further. We will measure the remaining beam background processes, due to colliding beams, in the imminent commissioning Phase 2. These backgrounds are expected to be the most critical for Belle II, to the point of necessitating replacement of detector components during the Phase 3 (full-luminosity) operation of SuperKEB., Published by North-Holland Publ.
