Abstract

The optimization of the motor cores, coupled with new core shapes as well as powering the motor at high frequency are the primary reasons for the use of new materials. The utilization of new materials, like SMC (soft magnetic composite), reduce the core loss and/or provide quasi-isotropic core’s properties in any magnetization direction. Moreover, the use of SMC materials allows for avoiding degradation of the material portions, resulting from punching process, thereby preventing the deterioration of operating parameters of the motor. The authors examine the impact of technological parameters on the properties of a new type of SMC material and analyze the possibility of its use as the core of the fractional power motor. The result of the work is an indication of the shape of the rotor core made of a new SMC material to achieve operational parameters similar to those that have a motor with a core made of laminations.

Abstract

This work is on deriving precise lumped parameter thermal networks for modeling the transient thermal characteristics of electric machines under variable load conditions. The goal is to facilitate an accurate estimation of the temperatures of critical machines' components and to allow for running the derived model in real time to adapt the motor control based on the load history and maximum permissible temperatures. Consequently, the machine's capabilities can be exhausted at best considering a highly-utilized drive. The model shall be as simple as possible without sacrificing the exactness of the predicted temperatures. Accordingly, a specific lumped parameter thermal network topology was selected and its characteristics are explained in detail. The measurement data based optimization of its critical parameters through an evolutionary optimization strategy, and the therefore utilized experimental setup will be described in detail here. Measurement cycles were recorded for modeling and verification purposes including both static and dynamic test cycles with changing load torque and speed requirements. Applying the proposed hybrid approach for determining the model's parameters through involving physics-based equations as well as numerical optimization followed a significant improvement of the preciseness of the predicted motor temperatures compared to solely determining the networks's coefficients based on expert knowledge. Thereby, the validation included both the original measurement data as well as extra measurement runs. The proposed and applied strategy provides an excellent basis for future thermal modeling of electric machines.

Abstract

In this paper, the determination of the end space induction motor heat transfer coefficients is presented, and the methodologies used are examined closely. Two 'ad hoc' prototypes have been built and a test bench completed. This paper reports the setup of the test procedures and results obtained in detail. As the end windings are the hottest points of the motor, particular care has been devoted to the determination of the heat transfer coefficient concerning the end-winding structure. The results obtained are of fundamental importance for the determination of the thermal resistances between end windings and end caps. These can then be used in thermal networks usually adopted in thermal model analysis. Index Terms--Heat transfer coefficients, induction motors, parameter identification, thermal model.
