Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Hymenaea eriogyne Benth (Fabaceae) is popularly known as "Jatobá". Despite its use in folk medicine to treat inflammatory disorders, there are no descriptions that show its anti-inflammatory potential., Aim of the Study: In this sense, this study aimed to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antivenom action of bark and leaves extract of H. eriogyne., Materials and Methods: The in vivo anti-inflammatory activity was conducted by carrageenan-induced paw edema and zymosan-induced air pouch models, evaluating the edematogenic effect, leukocyte migration, protein concentration, levels of pro-inflammatory cytokines, malondialdehyde (MDA) and myeloperoxidase (MPO) activity. The antivenom potential was investigated in vitro on the enzymatic action (proteolytic, phospholipase and hyaluronidase) of Bothrops brazili and B. leucurus venom, as well as in vivo on the paw edema model induced by B. leucurus. Furthermore, the influence of its markers (astilbin and rutin) on MPO activity was investigated in silico. For molecular docking, AutodockVina, Biovia Discovery Studio, and Chimera 1.16 software were used., Results: The extracts and bark and leaves of H. eriogyne revealed a high anti-inflammatory effect, with a reduction in all inflammatory parameters evaluated. The bark extract showed superior results when compared to the leaf extract, suggesting the influence of the astilbin concentration, higher in the bark, on the anti-inflammatory action. In addition, only the H. eriogyne bark extract was able to reduce MDA, indicating an associated antioxidant effect. Regarding the in vitro antivenom action, the extracts (bark and leaves) revealed the ability to inhibit the proteolytic, phospholipase and hyaluronidase action of both bothropic venom, with a greater effect against B. leucurus venom. In vivo, extracts from the bark and leaves of H. eriogyne (50-200 mg/kg) showed antiedematogenic activity, reducing the release of MPO and pro-inflammatory cytokines, indicating the presence of bioactive components useful in controlling the inflammatory process induced by the venom. In the in silico assays, astilbin and rutin showed reversible interactions of 9 possible positions and orientations towards MPO, with affinities of -9.5 and -10.4 kcal/mol and interactions with Phe407, Gln91, His95 and Arg239, important active pockets of MPO. Rutin demonstrated more effective types of interactions with MPO., Conclusion: This approach reveals for the first time the anti-inflammatory action of H. eriogyne bark and leaf extracts in vivo, as well as its antiophidic potential. Sycetta is a poorly known genus of calcareous sponges, primarily distinguished by the presence of tubes (the choanocyte chambers) radially organized around the atrial cavity and completely separated from each other. These tubes, referred to as conical diverticula or more aptly as papillae, impart a distinctive appearance to the external morphology of the sponges. Herein, we present the description of Sycetta papillata sp. nov., based on the examination of specimens collected several decades ago in the state of Bahia, located in Northeastern Brazil. The presence of a single category of diactines and atrial region formed exclusively by tetractines makes this species unique within the genus. While some species of Sycetta have been documented in deep regions, exceeding depths of 200 meters, the distribution range of S. papillata sp. nov. spans from 0.5 to 25 meters in depth. A comparative table of Sycetta species is being provided.

Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Eugenia uniflora Linn, popularly known as 'pitanga', is a native plant endemic to Brazil that belongs to the Myrtaceae family. Its traditional use (leaves infusion) has been reported for the treatment of different diseases, including hypertension, inflammation, and as a diuretic agent. Considering the snakebite problem and the rich molecule repertoire of this herbal species, studies that evaluate its antiophidic potential are relevant for a broad social impact., Aim of the Study: This approach aims to evaluate the anti-inflammatory and antiophidic potential in vitro and in vivo of the extract (aqueous) and a fraction (ethyl acetate) of E. uniflora leaves against Bothrops leucurus and Bothrops brazili venoms., Materials and Methods: Extract and fraction from E. uniflora leaves were obtained by turbo-extraction and partitioning. The cytotoxicity was assayed on normal cell lines (Vero E6 and 3T3) using the 3-methyl-[4-5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide method. The anti-inflammatory activity of the aqueous extract was analyzed in vivo in the zymosan-induced air pouch model, and the leukocytes migration and other molecular inflammatory mediators quantified (myeloperoxidase, total protein, pro-inflammatory cytokine, malondialdehyde, and glutathione). In vitro, the antiophidic effect was evaluated by the ability of the E. uniflora extract and fraction to inhibit the enzymatic action (proteolytic, phospholipase A 2, and hyaluronidase) of B. leucurus and B. brazili venoms. In addition, the antiophidic action in vivo was investigated after treatment with E. uniflora extract and fraction (50, 100, and 200 mg/kg) in the B. leucurus venom-induced paw edema with an evaluation of the antiedematogenic effect and quantification of myeloperoxidase (MPO) and pro-inflammatory cytokine levels., Results: The E. uniflora leaves extract (7.8-125 mg/mL) revealed no toxicity in cell culture, but reduced MTT by 47% at the highest concentration (250 mg/mL) in Vero E6 cells. In contrast, the E. uniflora fraction (7.8-250 mg/mL) showed no cytotoxicity for both cell lines. In the air pouch model, E. uniflora leaves extract demonstrated anti-inflammatory activity, reducing cell migration, MPO activity, protein, malondialdehyde, and proinflammatory cytokines, and increased glutathione levels. Evaluating the antiophidic action in vitro, E. uniflora extract and fraction inhibited the proteolytic, phospholipase, and hyaluronidase effects of B. leucurus and B. brazili venoms at low concentrations. In addition, the extract and fraction also demonstrated in vivo antiophidic activity by reducing edema in the first 0.5 h after treatment, besides reducing MPO and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels., Conclusion: E. uniflora leaves extract showed cytotoxicity only at the highest concentration while the fraction revealed no toxic effect in vitro. This approach showed for the first time that the aqueous extract and ethyl acetate fraction of E. uniflora leaves has similar antiophidic action in vitro and in vivo, with antiedematogenic and anti-inflammatory effects and the ability to inhibit the enzymatic action of B. leucurus and B. brazili venoms. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Aspidosperma nitidum Benth (Apocynaceae) is a tree found in Brazil especially in the Amazonia region, known as "carapanaúba", being used by indigenous and cabloco population in folk medicine in the treatment of malaria, leprosy, rheumatism, cancer, diabetes and inflammatory disorders. However, there are no scientific reports, up to now, to evidence its popular use as anti-inflammatory and healing agent., Aim of the Study: This study aimed to isolate indole alkaloids, as well as investigate the safety, anti-inflammatory and healing properties of hydroethanol extract from the stem barks of Aspidosperma nitidum Benth (An)., Material and Methods: The compounds were isolated using diverse chromatographic methodologies and the structures were determined by extensive spectroscopic analyses. The safety was evaluated in vitro through 3-methyl-[4-5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) assay using murine fibroblast (3T3) and monkey kidney (Vero E6) cell lines and by the hemolytic assay, as well as, in vivo, through acute toxicity model, which the mice received a single dose of 2000 mg/kg of An, by intra-gastric (i.g.) route, and behavioral, hematological and biochemical parameters were evaluated. The anti-edematogenic effect was monitored through carrageenan-induced paw edema model, in which the rodents were treated with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of An by i. g., the percentage of edema (0-4 h), myeloperoxidase (MPO) and pro-inflammatory cytokines (TNF-α, IL-6 and IL-1β) levels were quantified. The anti-inflammatory activity was demonstrated through the zymosan-air-pouch model, in which the animals were treated with 50, 100 and 200 mg/kg of An by i. g, and the leukocytes number, MPO, total protein and cytokines levels were determined. In addition, the healing potential was evaluated through a skin wound model, in which the mice received 50, 100 and 200 mg/mL of An in wound area, and the wound skins were photographed and the area calculated., Results: In total, five compounds were isolated in the An, being a new 8,9-dinorneolignan glucoside and four known indole alkaloids. The MTT and hemolytic assays, in all concentrations of the extract, demonstrated not be cytotoxic. Acute toxicity model also evidenced no sign of toxicity or significant changes on the behavior, biochemical and hematological parameters after use of the extract. In the edematogenic model, the An reduced significantly the percentage of edema, as well as, the MPO and pro-inflammatory cytokines levels. The same form, An revealed to be efficient in decreasing the leukocytes migration (mainly polymorphonuclears), total proteins, MPO and cytokines concentrations in the zymosan-air-pouch assay. Moreover, the An revealed a healing effect, reducing the area of the skin wound., Conclusion: Ours results evidence in the first time, the anti-inflammatory and healing property of An, justifying its use in traditional medicine. Many studies investigated the presence and effects of microplastics in marine species, but data about sponges are still incipient. We quantified these pollutants in a population of the tropical sponge Cinachyrella alloclada, comparing museum specimens sampled in 1981 with specimens sampled in 2017. The mean number of microplastics in specimens collected decades ago was one order of magnitude lower (0.13 ± 0.40/g of sponge tissue) than those sampled more recently (1.37 ± 0.94/g). We observed microplastics in only 10 % of the specimens collected in 1981 but in 80 % of those from 2017. According to Raman spectroscopy, fibers in C. alloclada consisted of polypropylene. Ethnopharmacological Relevance: Harpalyce brasiliana Benth (Leguminosae) is a shrub endemic to Brazil, popularly known as "snake's root." This species is used in folk medicine for the treatment of inflammation and snakebites. However, up to now there is no scientific research to justify its popular use. The study aimed to characterize the phytochemical profile of the hydroethanol extract from the roots of H. brasiliana (Hb), to evaluate its antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential, as well as to investigate its cytotoxicity and acute toxicity., Materials and Methods: The extract was obtained by maceration method using a solution of ethanol:water (70: 30, v/v). The phytochemical profile was obtained by liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. The cytotoxicity of extract (31-2000 μg/mL) was evaluated in vitro, by the 3-methyl-[4-5-dimethylthiazol-2-yl]-2,5-diphenyltetrazolium bromide (MTT) method using murine macrophage and fibroblast cell lines (RAW 247.6 and 3T3, respectively) and by the hemolytic assay. For the in vivo acute toxicity, the extract (2000 mg/kg) was administered and after 14 days the weight (body and organs) and hematological and biochemical parameters were analyzed. Chemical free radical scavenging effect of the extract (125-2000 μg/mL) was investigated through diphenylpicryl hydrazine reduction, total antioxidant capacity, reducing power, hydroxyl radical scavenging, and iron and copper chelating assays. In vitro anti-inflammatory effect of the extract (125, 500, and 2000 μg/mL) was demonstrated through of nitric oxide (NO) analyzed in lipopolysaccharides stimulated RAW 264.7 cells. In vivo anti-inflammatory activities were evaluated in carrageenan-induced paw edema and zymosan-air-pouch models, with gavage administration (post-treatment) of extract at 100, 200, and 400 mg/kg. For the first animal model, the anti-edematogenic activity and myeloperoxidase (MPO) levels were investigated, while in the zymosan-air-pouch model the leukocyte number, MPO, total protein and pro-inflammatory cytokine (IL-1β, IL-6, and TNF-α) levels were quantified. In addition, the oxidative parameters such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and reduced glutathione (GSH) were determined., Results: The phytochemical profile revealed the presence of 20 compounds, mainly prenylated and geranylated pterocarpans. The extract demonstrated no cytotoxicity in erythrocytes, macrophages and fibroblasts cells at the tested concentrations, as well as no sign of toxicity and mortality or significant alterations on the hematological and biochemical parameters in the acute toxicity model. The extract was also able to neutralize chemical free radicals, with copper and iron chelating effect. For the NO dosage, the extract evidenced the reduction of expression of NO after the administration of the extract (500 and 2000 μg/mL). The edematogenic model revealed a decrease in paw edema and MPO level, while the zymosan-air-pouch model evidenced a reduction of leukocyte number (especially of polymorphornuclears), MPO production, and total protein and cytokine levels, and demonstrated the antioxidant effect through a decrease in MDA and increase in GSH parameters., Conclusion: This approach demonstrates for the first time that Hb is not cytotoxic, has low acute toxicity, and possesses antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties in preclinical analyses, corroborating its popular use., (Copyright © 2022 Elsevier B.V. Amphoriscus is the type genus of the family Amphoriscidae. Since its nomination in the 19th century, its diagnosis has undergone significant changes. Most of the species currently assigned to Amphoriscus have only been reported once, when they were first described. Furthermore, unlike other Amphoriscidae genera, new Amphoriscus species are not commonly described. Therefore, the understanding of the diversity, distribution, and morphology of the genus remains fragmented, a lacuna that is being filled slowly. In this study, several species were revisited by the redescription of type and/or additional specimens. This results in considerable advances, including changes in the geographical distribution of A. cylindrus and A. chrysalis, a proposal of reallocation of A. dohrni in Leuconia, recognition of A. gastrorhabdifera as incertae sedis, a detailed description of the type species based on a set of specimens and, finally, the description of a new species, A. decennis sp. nov.

The genus Leucandrilla was proposed to allocate species of Leucandra sharing the presence of articulated skeleton and cortical tetractines with short apical actine. Hence, the taxonomic histories of both genera are closely related and spark discussions on the validity and characterisation of features that are typical of Leucandrilla. Nevertheless, since the proposition of this genus almost two decades ago, knowledge on its type species, Leucandrilla wasinensis, is based on the original description, which needs to be improved. Therefore, the main goal of the present work was to redescribe the holotype of L. wasinensis. Redescription of L. intermedia is also provided, evidencing the stability of diagnostic taxonomic features among species of Leucandrilla. Our results will improve the current knowledge on the features defining this genus and can be of great value for future works dealing with concerns on the validity, phylogeny and taxonomy of Leucandrilla.

The main characteristic of sponges (Porifera) is the presence of the aquiferous system-a system formed by canals and choanocyte chambers, in which the sponges carry out most of their physiological functions. Despite of the importance for the biology of the group, the knowledge about this structure is still incipient, even when morphological investigations are taken in account. Here, we investigated the anatomy and ultrastructure of the tropical demosponge Cladocroce caelum (Haplosclerida, Demospongiae) using light and electron microscopy. In the studied region, specimens of this species were repent or repent-branched, possessing one to several oscula. A uniform and reduced atrium was found just below each osculum. There was a thin ectosome and the choanosome presented meager mesohyl, but a high number of choanocyte chambers. The choanocyte chambers were rounded, and, as in other haplosclerids, they are found separated from the mesohyl by endopinacocytes, "hanging" in the inhalant canals. Even though the utility of the general organization of the aquiferous system has been advocated as a possible tool to understand the phylogeny of the group, we found that these characters might not be as useful as expected. The size of the particles ingested by the sponge and the amount of bacteria to sustain their bodies are discussed. In addition, we found that the density of choanocyte chambers was reduced when the specimens were carrying out the spermatogenesis, indicating that the reproduction may impair the filtering activity of the sponge. Several specimens of calcareous sponges were sampled on artificial substrates of a recreational marina in Salvador, Bahia state, on the northeastern coast of Brazil. They belong to four species, two of which are new: Leucandra serrata, Paraleucilla incomposita, Sycon bellum sp. nov., and S. avus sp. nov. Leucandra serrata is recorded for the first time at the coast of Bahia, filling a large gap in the geographical distribution of this species, while the description of the specimens of P. incomposita revealed new characters that had previously been overlooked. Finally, the new species of Sycon described here differ from all the previously known species of the genus due to their skeletal organisation and spicule size. Our results increase the number of species known in Bahia from 13 to 17 and emphasise that areas with a large amount of artificial hard substrates can potentially harbour an interesting and unknown diversity of calcareous sponges.

Amphoriscus is a widespread genus with 17 species. A new species was found in SE Brazil and it represents the second species of this genus in Brazilian waters. Amphoriscus pedunculatus sp. nov. has a special structure, a peduncle, to attach to the substrate. Special attachment structures are not very common in the class Calcarea but this is the third species of the genus with a peduncle. Besides peduncle, another attachment structure found in some species of Amphoriscus is the root-tuft, an attachment structure composed of diactines and anchor-like triactines or tetractines. The evolution of these attachment structures in Amphoriscus is not known but they have also been found out of this genus, suggesting that these structures appeared several times during the evolution of Calcarea or that species currently classified in different genera are in fact congeneric.

Purpose:: To evaluate the contribution of L-arginine oral or topical rout of administration in the surgical wound healing process., Methods:: L-arginine was orally or topically administrated to mice after a laparotomy model procedure. The wounds were analyzed to evaluate the granulation tissue by HE analysis, collagen deposition, iNOS and cytokines production by immunochemisyry on wound progress. Mice used in this model were healthy, immunosupressed or diabetic and all of them were treated with different concentration of L-arginine and rout of administration., Results:: Suggested that groups treated with L-arginine orally or topically improved wound repair when compared with non-treatad mice. L- arginine treatment stimulated TGF-β and restricted NO production leading to a mild Th1 response and collagen deposition in injured area, when it was orally administrated. Topical administration decreased IL-8 and CCR1 expression by wound cells but did not interfere with TNF-α and IL-10 production, ratifying the decrease of inflammatory response, the oral administration however, presented a higher iNOS and TGF-β expression then. L-arginine treatment also improved the improved the wound healing in immunosupressed or diabetic mice., Conclusion:: L-arginine administrated orally or topically can be considered an important factor in the recuperation of tissues.

Two new species of the genus Vosmaeropsis are described: V. recruta sp. nov. and V. complanatispinifera sp. nov., both from the Brazilian coast. These species possess arrow-shaped large diactines in their skeletons, which are being described for the first time in Vosmaeropsis. In addition, the latter species presents another remarkable character: the apical actines of its atrial tetractines is flattened and provided with spines. Vosmaeropsis complanastispinifera sp. nov. is being proposed based on the re-analysis of specimens that in the past were assigned to V. sericata. Thus, with the reallocation of these specimens to the newly described species, the current distribution range of V. sericata does not include the Brazilian northeastern coast. Vosmaeropsis now comprises 23 species. Most of them present an endemic pattern of distribution, but the genus is widely distributed in tropical and temperate regions around the world.

Three new species of calcareous sponges from the coast of Bahia State, NE Brazil are described. All of them belong to the genus Paraleucilla (Calcaronea, Leucosolenida, Amphoriscidae): P. solangeae sp. nov., P. oca sp. nov., and P. incomposita sp. nov. The number of species recorded from the Bahia coast has thus increased from 10 to 13. Including these new species, there are now 50 calcareous sponge species known from the entire Brazilian coast. Paraleucilla is now composed of 11 species, six of them occurring along the southwestern Atlantic Ocean. The remaining species occur mainly in the Indian Ocean, and also in the Pacific Ocean, Red Sea and Mediterranean Sea. An identification key for all Paraleucilla species is provided. This paper is dedicated to the memory of Professor Solange Peixinho, to acknowledge her contribution to our understanding of the biodiversity of Calcarea from the Bahia coast in Brazil.

Sponges of the genus Leucascus are frequently recognised as possessing anastomosed tubes with choanocytes, and cortical and atrial membranes with pinacocytes. In the last years, five species of other genera were transferred to Leucascus, and several other species were suggested but not formally included in this genus. In the present work, all these species accepted or suggested as Leucascus were revised. According to our results, Leucascus is now composed of nine species: L. clavatus, L. leptoraphis comb. nov., L. lobatus, L. neocaledonicus, L. protogenes comb. nov., L. roseus, L. simplex (type species), L. albus sp. nov., and L.flavus sp. nov. The presence of spines in the apical actine of the tetractines had never been observed in Leucascus, but it was found in all species with tetractines in their skeletons. Some species were transferred from Leucascus to the genus Ascoleucetta, which is revalidated here based on important differences in the cortex. Modifications are also proposed in the definition of both genera. Based on our results, the family Leucascidae is now composed of Ascaltis, Leucascus and Ascoleucetta.
