Since 1971, remote sensing techniques have been used to map and monitor phenomena and parameters of the coastal zone. However, updated reviews have only considered one phenomenon, parameter, remote data source, platform, or geographic region. No review has offered an updated overview of coastal phenomena and parameters that can be accurately mapped and monitored with remote data. This systematic review was performed to achieve this purpose. A total of 15,141 papers published from January 2021 to June 2023 were identified. The 1475 most cited papers were screened, and 502 eligible papers were included. The Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched using all possible combinations between two groups of keywords: all geographical names in coastal areas and all remote data and platforms. The systematic review demonstrated that, to date, many coastal phenomena (103) and parameters (39) can be mapped and monitored using remote data (e.g., coastline and land use and land cover changes, climate change, and coastal urban sprawl). Moreover, the authors validated 91% of the retrieved parameters, retrieved from remote data 39 parameters that were mapped or monitored 1158 times (88% of the parameters were combined together with other parameters), monitored 75% of the parameters over time, and retrieved 69% of the parameters from several remote data and compared the results with each other and with available products. They obtained 48% of the parameters using different methods, and their results were compared with each other and with available products. They combined 17% of the parameters that were retrieved with GIS and model techniques. In conclusion, the authors addressed the requirements needed to more effectively analyze coastal phenomena and parameters employing integrated approaches: they retrieved the parameters from different remote data, merged different data and parameters, compared different methods, and combined different techniques. The pixels of remote images often contain more than one distinct material (mixed pixels), and so their spectra are characterized by a mixture of spectral signals. Since 1971, a shared effort has enabled the development of techniques for retrieving information from mixed pixels. The most analyzed, implemented, and employed procedure is spectral unmixing. Among the extensive literature on the spectral unmixing, nineteen reviews were identified, and each highlighted the many shortcomings of spatial validation. Although an overview of the approaches used to spatially validate could be very helpful in overcoming its shortcomings, a review of them was never provided. Therefore, this systematic review provides an updated overview of the approaches used, analyzing the papers that were published in 2022, 2021, and 2020, and a dated overview, analyzing the papers that were published not only in 2011 and 2010, but also in 1996 and 1995. The key criterion is that the results of the spectral unmixing were spatially validated. The Web of Science and Scopus databases were searched, using all the names that were assigned to spectral unmixing as keywords. A total of 454 eligible papers were included in this systematic review. Their analysis revealed that six key issues in spatial validation were considered and differently addressed: the number of validated endmembers; sample sizes and sampling designs of the reference data; sources of the reference data; the creation of reference fractional abundance maps; the validation of the reference data with other reference data; the minimization and evaluation of the errors in co-localization and spatial resampling. Since addressing these key issues enabled the authors to overcome some of the shortcomings of spatial validation, it is recommended that all these key issues be addressed together. However, few authors addressed all the key issues together, and many authors did not specify the spatial validation approach used or did not adequately explain the methods employed. Following the success of the first hyperspectral sensor, the evaluation of hyperspectral image capability became a challenge in research, which mainly focused on improving image pre-processing and processing steps to minimize their errors, whereas in this study, the focus was on the weight of hyperspectral sensor characteristics on image capability in order to distinguish this effect from errors caused by image pre-processing and processing steps and improve our knowledge of errors. For these purposes, two satellite hyperspectral sensors with similar spatial and spectral characteristics (Hyperion and PRISMA) were compared with corresponding synthetic images, and the city of Venice was selected as the study area. After creating the synthetic images, the errors in the simulation of Hyperion and PRISMA images were evaluated (1.6 and 1.1%, respectively). The same spectral unmixing procedure was performed using real and synthetic images, and their accuracies were compared. The spectral accuracies in root mean square error were equal to 0.017 and 0.016, respectively. In addition, 72.3 and 77.4% of these values were related to sensor characteristics. The spatial accuracies in the mean absolute error were equal to 3.93 and 3.68, respectively. A total of 55.6 and 59.0% of these values were related to sensor characteristics, and 22.6 and 22.3% were related to co-localization and spatial resampling errors. The difference between the radiometric precision values of the sensors was 6.81 and 5.91% regarding the spectral and spatial accuracies of Hyperion image. In conclusion, the results of this study showed that the combined use of two or more real hyperspectral images with similar characteristics and their synthetic images quantifies the weight of hyperspectral sensor characteristics on their image capability and improves our knowledge regarding processing errors, and thus image capability. Since remote sensing images offer unique access to the distribution of land cover on earth, many countries are investing in this technique to monitor urban sprawl. For this purpose, the most widely used methodology is spectral unmixing which, after identifying the spectra of the mixed-pixel constituents, determines their fractional abundances in the pixel. However, the literature highlights shortcomings in spatial validation due to the lack of detailed ground truth knowledge and proposes five key requirements for accurate reference fractional abundance maps: they should cover most of the area, their spatial resolution should be higher than that of the results, they should be validated using other ground truth data, the full range of abundances should be validated, and errors in co-localization and spatial resampling should be minimized. However, most proposed reference maps met two or three requirements and none met all five. In situ and remote data acquired in Venice were exploited to meet all five requirements. Moreover, to obtain more information about the validation procedure, not only reference spectra, synthetic image, and fractional abundance models (FAMs) that met all the requirements, but also other data, that no previous work exploited, were employed: reference fractional abundance maps that met four out of five requirements, and fractional abundance maps retrieved from the synthetic image. Briefly summarizing the main results obtained from MIVIS data, the average of spectral accuracies in root mean square error was equal to 0.025; using FAMs, the average of spatial accuracies in mean absolute error (MAEk-Totals) was equal to 1.32 and more than 78% of these values were related to sensor characteristics; using reference fractional abundance maps, the average MAEk-Totals value increased to 1.97 because errors in co-localization and spatial-resampling affected about 29% of these values. In conclusion, meeting all requirements and the exploitation of different reference data increase the spatial accuracy, upgrade the validation procedure, and improve the knowledge of accuracy. Split window (SW) methods, which have been successfully used to retrieve measurements of land surface temperature (LST) and sea surface temperature (SST) from MODIS images, were exploited to evaluate the SST data of three sections of Italian coastal waters. For this purpose, sea surface emissivity (SSE) values were estimated by adding the effects of salinity and total suspended particulate matter (SPM) concentrations, sea surface wind speed, and zenith observation angle. The total column atmospheric water vapor contents were retrieved from MODIS data. SST data retrieved from MODIS images using these algorithms were compared with SSTskin measurements evaluated from in situ data. The comparison showed that the algorithms for retrieving LST measurements minimized the error in SST data in near-land coastal waters with respect to the algorithms for retrieving SST measurements: a method for retrieving LST measurements highlighted the smallest root-mean-square deviation (RMSD) value (0.48 K) and values of maximum bias and standard deviation (σ) equal to -3.45 K and 0.41 K; the current operation algorithm for retrieving LST data highlighted the smallest values of maximum bias and α(-1.37 K and 0.35 K) and an RMSD value of 0.66 K; and the current operation algorithm for retrieving global measurements of SST showed values of RMSD, maximum bias, and αequal to 0.68 K, -1.90 K, and 0.40 K, respectively. This methodology assesses the accuracy with which remote data characterizes a surface, as a function of Full Width at Half Maximum (FWHM). The purpose is to identify the best remote data that improves the characterization of a surface, evaluating the number of bands in the spectral range. The first step creates an accurate dataset of remote simulated data, using in situ hyperspectral reflectances. The second step evaluates the capability of remote simulated data to characterize this surface. The spectral similarity measurements, which are obtained using classifiers, provide this capability. The third step examines the precision of this capability. The assumption is that in situ hyperspectral reflectances are considered the "real" reflectances. They are resized with the same spectral range of the remote data. The spectral similarity measurements which are obtained from "real" resized reflectances, are considered "real" measurements. Therefore, the quantity and magnitude of "errors" (i.e., differences between spectral similarity measurements obtained from "real" resized reflectances and from remote data) provide the accuracy as a function of FWHM. This methodology was applied to evaluate the accuracy with which CHRIS-mode1, CHRIS-mode2, Landsat5-TM, MIVIS and PRISMA data characterize three coastal waters. Quantitative analysis of atmospheric optical properties and surface reflectance can be performed by applying radiative transfer theory in the Atmosphere-Earth coupled system, for the atmospheric correction of hyperspectral remote sensing data. This paper describes a new physically-based algorithm to retrieve the aerosol optical thickness at 550nm (τ550) and the surface reflectance (ρ) from airborne acquired data in the atmospheric window of the Visible and Near-Infrared (VNIR) range. The algorithm is realized in two modules. Module A retrieves τ550 with a minimization algorithm, then Module B retrieves the surface reflectance ρ for each pixel of the image. The method was tested on five remote sensing images acquired by an airborne sensor under different geometric conditions to evaluate the reliability of the method. The results, τ550 and ρ, retrieved from each image were validated with field data contemporaneously acquired by a sun-sky radiometer and a spectroradiometer, respectively. Good correlation index, r, and low root mean square deviations, RMSD, were obtained for the τ550 retrieved by Module A (r2 = 0.75, RMSD = 0.08) and the ρ retrieved by Module B (r2 ≤ 0.9, RMSD ≤ 0.003). Overall, the results are encouraging, indicating that the method is reliable for optical atmospheric studies and the atmospheric correction of airborne hyperspectral images. This paper aims to assess the suitability of remote sensing for enhancing the management of water body resources and for providing an inexpensive way to gather, on a wide area, weed infestation extent and optical parameter linked to the water body status. Remotely sensed satellite images and ancillary ground true data were used to produce land cover maps, trough classification techniques, and water compounds maps, applying radiative transfer models. The study proposed within the framework of the cooperation between Italian Foreign Affair Ministry (through the University of Rome) and Kenyan Authorities has been carried out on the Kenyan part of the Lake Victoria. This lake is one of the largest freshwater bodies of the world where, over the last few years environmental challenges and human impact have perturbed the ecological balance affecting the biodiversity. The objective of this research study is to define the thematic products, retrievable from satellite images, like weed abundance maps and water compound concentrations. These products, if provided with an appropriate time frequency, are useful to identify the preconditions for the occurrence of hazard events like abnormal macrophyte proliferation and to develop an up-to-date decision support system devoted to an apprised territory, environment and resource management. We analyze the capability of Hyperion spaceborne hyperspectral data for discriminating land cover in a complex natural ecosystem according to the structure of the currently used European standard classification system (CORINE Land Cover 2000). For this purpose, we used Hyperion imagery acquired over Pollino National Park (Italy). Hyperion pre-processed data (30 m spatial resolution) were classified at the pixel level using common parametric supervised classification methods. The algorithms'' performance and class level accuracy were compared with those obtained for the same area using airborne hyperspectral MIVIS data (7 m spatial resolution). Moreover, in selected test areas characterized by heterogeneous land cover (as mapped by MIVIS classification) a Linear Spectral Unmixing (LSU) technique was applied to Hyperion data to derive the abundance fractions of land cover endmembers. The accuracy of the LSU analysis was evaluated using the Residual Error parameter, by comparing Hyperion LSU results with land cover fractional abundances achieved from reference data (i.e., MIVIS and air-photo classification). The results show the potential of Hyperion spaceborne hyperspectral imagery in mapping land cover and vegetation diversity up to the 4th level of the CORINE legend, even at the sub-pixel level, within a fragmented ecosystem such as that of Pollino National Park. Moreover, we defined a criterion for evaluating the Hyperion accuracy in retrieving land cover abundances at the sub-pixel scale. Sub-pixel analysis allowed us to determine the optimal threshold to select the areas on which consistent fractional land cover monitoring can be achieved using the Hyperion sensor. Different landscape elements, including archaeological remains, can be automatically classified when their spectral characteristics are different, but major difficulties occur when extracting and classifying archaeological spectral features, as archaeological remains do not have unique shape or spectral characteristics. The spectral anomaly characteristics due to buried remains depend strongly on vegetation cover and/or soil types, which can make feature extraction more complicated. For crop areas, such as the test sites selected for this study, soil and moisture changes within near-surface archaeological deposits can influence surface vegetation patterns creating spectral anomalies of various kinds. In this context, this paper analyzes the usefulness of hyperspectral imagery, in the 0.4 to 12.8 ?m spectral region, to identify the optimal spectral range for archaeological prospection as a function of the dominant land cover. MIVIS airborne hyperspectral imagery acquired in five different archaeological areas located in Italy has been used. Within these archaeological areas, 97 test sites with homogenous land cover and characterized by a statistically significant number of pixels related to the buried remains have been selected. The archaeological detection potential for all MIVIS bands has been assessed by applying a Separability Index on each spectral anomaly-background system of the test sites. A scatterplot analysis of the SI values vs. the dominant land cover fractional abundances, as retrieved by spectral mixture analysis, was performed to derive the optimal spectral ranges maximizing the archaeological detection. This work demonstrates that whenever we know the dominant land cover fractional abundances in archaeological sites, we can a priori select the optimal spectral range to improve the efficiency of archaeological observations performed by remote sensing data. An experimental method to select the number of principal components in minimum noise fraction (MNF) is proposed to process images measured by imagery sensors onboard aircraft or satellites. The method is based on an experimental measurement by spectrometers in dark conditions from which noise structure can be estimated. To represent typical land conditions and atmospheric variability, a significative data set of synthetic noise-free images based on real Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer images is built. To this purpose, a subset of spectra is selected within some public libraries that well represent the simulated images. By coupling these synthetic images and estimated noise, the optimal number of components in MNF can be obtained. In order to have an objective (fully data driven) procedure, some criteria are proposed, and the results are validated to estimate the number of components without relying on ancillary data. The whole procedure is made computationally feasible by some simplifications that are introduced. Many countries share an effort to understand the impact of growing urban areas on the environment. Spatial, spectral, and temporal resolutions of remote sensing images offer unique access to this information. Nevertheless, their use is limited because urban surface materials exhibit a great diversity of types and are not well spatially and spectrally distinguishable. This work aims to quantify the effect of these spatial and spectral characteristics of urban surface materials on their retrieval from images. To avoid other sources of error, synthetic images of the historical center of Venice were analyzed. A hyperspectral library, which characterizes the main materials of Venice city and knowledge of the city, allowed to create a starting image at a spatial resolution of 30 cm and spectral resolution of 3 nm and with a spectral range of 365–2500 nm, which was spatially and spectrally resampled to match the characteristics of most remote sensing sensors. Linear spectral mixture analysis was applied to every resampled image to evaluate and compare their capabilities to distinguish urban surface materials. In short, the capability depends mainly on spatial resolution, secondarily on spectral range and mixed pixel percentage, and lastly on spectral resolution; impervious surfaces are more distinguishable than pervious surfaces. This paper describes a systematic procedure for recognizing corrugated asbestos-cement roofing sheets and evaluating their deterioration status related to the asbestos fiber air dispersion that can cause lung cancer. To develop this procedure, we made field and laboratory measurements and gathered airborne MIVIS data covering two industrial test areas in Italy. Laboratory analyses of asbestos-cement samples representing various levels of deterioration allowed for: (a) recognizing dominant minerals using XRD and FTIR instruments, (b) identifying their optical characteristics using portable field spectrometers (ASD and μFTIR), (c) assessing the abundance of surfacing asbestos fibers using a high resolution scanner. Based on the spectral analyses, two linear regression lines were identified by relating optical asbestos-cement material characteristics (i.e. band-depth ratio of the continuum removed calculated for the two asbestos diagnostic bands at 2.32 μm and at 9.44 μm) to the relative percentage of surfacing asbestos fibers related to AC deterioration status. Suitable MIVIS spectral regions were used in a spectral classification procedure to map asbestos-cement roofs. The detected roofs were further analyzed using the obtained linear regression lines to estimate surfacing asbestos fiber abundance, using the MIVIS TIR range at 9.44 μm, selected by means of the asbestos-cement detection limit analysis. The results showed that a hyperspectral scanner with suitable operational characteristics allows for good clustering of AC roofs as a function of their deterioration status. Therefore, this technique can furnish government authorities with an efficient, rapid and repeatable environmental mapping procedure that can provide information about the location of hazardous AC roofing sheets. Abstract: Hyperspectral data were exploited to test their effectiveness as a tool for archaeological prospection, envisaging their potential for detecting spectral anomalies related to buried archaeological structures. For this purpose the airborne Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer images were analysed. Each single band of the entire data set and different processing technique products were interpreted to identify any tonal anomalies. Since every analysed image exhibited marks different in terms of size and intensity, two indexes were defined for assessing the potential of anomalies detection of each image. Such parameters were: the Detection Index, used for counting the number of pixels related in each image to marks, and the Separability Index, applied for measuring the tonal difference of the marks with respect to the background. These indexes were tested on two areas within the Selinunte Archaeological Park where the presence of remains, not yet excavated, was supposed by archaeologists. For the test sites any extracted anomalies were evaluated by an expert in order to determine their archaeological relevance. The comparison among the index values, derived from each single band of the spectrometer and from different image processing by-products, allowed to determine which spectral range and which processing method are the most valuable to quickly highlight the anomalies. The analysis pointed out that, where vegetation cover is dominant, the Visible near infrared is the spectral region more sensitive to variations of spectral properties related to buried structures, while, where soil cover becomes relevant, the Short-wave infrared and the Thermal-infrared regions resulted more sensitive. As far as the applied processing methods are concerned, the Spectral Angle Mapper classifier and, secondly, the Minimum Distance algorithm stressed the highest archaeological information content. The results of this work showed that the archaeological information content derived by analysing the outputs of the applied image processing techniques is more significant than the information obtained by interpreting each single band and the available historical aerial photos. As a final remark, the data processing flow chart, applied to the entire remote hyperspectral data set over Selinunte Archaeological Park, appeared encouraging for detection of anomalies related to the presence of the buried archaeological structures. The spatial–temporal resolution of remote data covers coastal water variability, but this approach offers a lower accuracy than in situ observations. Two of the major error sources occur due to the parameterization of bio-optical models and spectral capability of the remote data. These errors were evaluated by exploiting data acquired in the coastal waters of Manfredonia Gulf. Chlorophyll-a concentrations, absorption of the colored dissolved organic material at 440 nm (aCDOM440nm), and tripton concentrations measured in situ varied between 0.09–1.76 mgm−3, 0.00–0.41 m−1, and 1.97–8.90 gm−3. In accordance with the position and time of in situ surveys, 36 local models, four daily models, and one total bio-optical model were parameterized and validated using in situ data before applying to Compact High-Resolution Imaging Spectrometer (CHRIS) mode 1, CHRIS mode 2, Landsat Thematic Mapper (TM), Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS), Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS), and Precursore Iperspettrale della Missione Applicativa (PRISMA) simulated data. Concentrations retrieved from PRISMA data using local models highlighted the smallest errors. Because tripton abundance is great and tripton absorptions were better resolved than those of chlorophyll-a and colored dissolved organic material (CDOM), tripton concentrations were adequately retrieved from all data using total models, while only local models adequately retrieved chlorophyll-a concentrations and aCDOM440nm from CHRIS mode 1, CHRIS mode 2, MIVIS, and MODIS data. Therefore, the application of local models shows smaller errors than those of daily and total models; however, the capability to resolve the absorption of water constituents and analyze their concentration range can dictate the model choice. Abstract: Archaeological remains can be automatically extracted by remote sensing data when their spectral characteristics are discernible from their background; however, problems arise when extracting and classifying archaeological spectral features relative to subsurface structures, as archaeological remains do not have unique shape or spectral characteristics. Under the unidentifiable spectral condition, the main aim of this research is to verify the effectiveness of limited and specific spectral bands, retrieved by a hyperspectral remote sensing methodology described in , for the detection of surface anomalies related to archeological structures. The archaeological relevance of these extracted spectral anomalies is determined by an expert using traditional photo-interpretation methods. The results, compared with the archaeological knowledge of this area, stress the usefulness of the methodology to identify the specific spectral ranges to detect surface anomalies related to subsurface archaeological structures as a function of the surfacing land cover. The selected area for this study is located in the Arpi archaeological area (Italy) and the hyperspectral imagery used are Multispectral Infrared and Visible Imaging Spectrometer (MIVIS) airborne data. The paper highlights how airborne hyperspectral remote sensing can be an effective and cost-efficient tool to perform a preliminary analysis of subsurface remains in archaeological areas by prioritizing and localizing the sites where one can apply near surface geophysical and archaeological surveys. Abstract: The aim of this study is to explore the capability of hyperspectral remote sensing to map areas affected by Red Dust (RD) pollution on soil and river water. The chosen study area contains residues from the extraction of aluminum from bauxite in a mud pond (i.e. the red mud), which contain high concentrations of contaminants such as heavy metals, so that special precaution must be taken when disposing to avoid RD pollution of land surface and river water resources. We perform laboratory analysis and in situ measurements of RD polluted samples to recognize the dominant minerals and identify the optical characteristics of the samples and their spectral features. Both an unsupervised methodology and a shape-based spectral analysis technique, using the significant RD reflectance spectral features, were applied to airborne hyperspectral remote sensing data to map the RD distribution on bare soils. Whereas, to assess a tool for the detection of RD in river waters a semi-analytical model for the radiative transfer in water bodies was used. The results of the spectral shape-based analysis and of the semi-analytical model used for this study were consistent with ground truth data and hence support the application of hyperspectral technologies for a rapid detection and mapping of industrial wastes, such as the RD. Abstract: Over the past few years, the increased spectral and spatial resolution of remote sensing equipment has promoted the investigation of new techniques for inland and coastal water monitoring. The availability of new high-resolution data has allowed improvements in models based on the radiative transfer theory for assessing optical water quality parameters. In this study, we fine-tuned a physical model for the highly turbid Venice lagoon waters and developed an inversion technique based on a two-step optimization procedure appropriate for hyperspectral data processing to retrieve water constituent concentrations from remote data. In the first step, the solution of a linearized analytical formulation of the radiative transfer equations was found. In the second step, this solution was used to provide the initial values in a non-linear least squares-based method. This effort represents a first step in the construction of a feasible and timely methodology for Venice lagoon water quality monitoring by remote sensing, especially in view of the existing experimental hyperspectral satellite (Hyperion) and the future missions such as PRISMA, EnMap and HyspIRI. The optical properties of the water constituents were assessed on the basis of sea/lagoon campaigns and data from the literature. The water light field was shaped by an analytical formulation of radiative transfer equations and the application of numerical simulations (Hydrolight software). Once the optical properties of the Venice lagoon bio-optical model were validated, the inverse procedure was applied to local radiometric spectra to retrieve concentrations of chlorophyll, colored dissolved organic matter and tripton. The inverse procedure was validated by comparing these concentrations with those measured in the laboratory from in situ water samples, then it was applied to airborne (CASI and MIVIS) and satellite (Hyperion) sensors to derive water constituent concentration maps. Hyperspectral images can highlight crop marks in vegetated areas, which may indicate the presence of underground buried structures, by exploiting the spectral information conveyed in reflected solar radiation. In recent years, different vegetation indices and several other image features have been used, with varying success, to improve the interpretation of remotely sensed images for archaeological research. However, it is difficult to assess the derived maps quantitatively and select the most meaningful one for a given task, in particular for a non-specialist in image processing. This paper estimates for the first time objectively the suitability of maps derived from spectral features for the detection of buried archaeological structures in vegetated areas based on information theory. This is achieved by computing the statistical dependence between the extracted features and a digital map indicating the presence of buried structures using information theoretical notions. Based on the obtained scores on known targets, the features can be ranked and the most suitable can be chosen to aid in the discovery of previously undetected crop marks in the area under similar conditions. Three case studies are reported: the Roman buried remains of Carnuntum (Austria), the underground structures of Selinunte in the South of Italy, and the buried street relics of Pherai (Velestino) in central Greece.
