Abstract

With the proliferation of Internet of Things (IoT) devices, ensuring secure communications has become imperative. Due to their low cost and embedded nature, many of these devices operate with computational and energy constraints, neglecting the potential security vulnerabilities that they may bring. This work-in-progress is focused on designing secure communication among remote servers and embedded IoT devices to balance security robustness and energy efficiency. The proposed approach uses lightweight cryptography, optimizing device performance and security without overburdening their limited resources. Our architecture stands out for integrating Edge servers and a central Name Server, allowing secure and decentralized authentication and efficient connection transitions between different Edge servers. This architecture enhances the scalability of the IoT network and reduces the load on each server, distributing the responsibility for authentication and key management., Comment: 6 pages and 2 figures

Abstract

Industrial Control Systems (ICS) constitute the backbone of contemporary industrial operations, ranging from modest heating, ventilation, and air conditioning systems to expansive national power grids. Given their pivotal role in critical infrastructure, there has been a concerted effort to enhance security measures and deepen our comprehension of potential cyber threats within this domain. To address these challenges, numerous implementations of Honeypots and Honeynets intended to detect and understand attacks have been employed for ICS. This approach diverges from conventional methods by focusing on making a scalable and reconfigurable honeynet for cyber-physical systems. It will also automatically generate attacks on the honeynet to test and validate it. With the development of a scalable and reconfigurable Honeynet and automatic attack generation tools, it is also expected that the system will serve as a basis for producing datasets for training algorithms for detecting and classifying attacks in cyber-physical honeynets.

Abstract

Adversarial attacks significantly threaten the robustness of deep neural networks (DNNs). Despite the multiple defensive methods employed, they are nevertheless vulnerable to poison attacks, where attackers meddle with the initial training data. In order to defend DNNs against such adversarial attacks, this work proposes a novel method that combines the defensive distillation mechanism with a denoising autoencoder (DAE). This technique tries to lower the sensitivity of the distilled model to poison attacks by spotting and reconstructing poisonous adversarial inputs in the training data. We added carefully created adversarial samples to the initial training data to assess the proposed method's performance. Our experimental findings demonstrate that our method successfully identified and reconstructed the poisonous inputs while also considering enhancing the DNN's resilience. The proposed approach provides a potent and robust defense mechanism for DNNs in various applications where data poisoning attacks are a concern. 4. Software-based security approach for networked embedded devices

Abstract

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to expand, data security has become increasingly important for ensuring privacy and safety, especially given the sensitive and, sometimes, critical nature of the data handled by IoT devices. There exist hardware-based trusted execution environments used to protect data, but they are not compatible with low-cost devices that lack hardware-assisted security features. The research in this paper presents software-based protection and encryption mechanisms explicitly designed for embedded devices. The proposed architecture is designed to work with low-cost, low-end devices without requiring the usual changes on the underlying hardware. It protects against hardware attacks and supports runtime updates, enabling devices to write data in protected memory. The proposed solution is an alternative data security approach for low-cost IoT devices without compromising performance or functionality. Abstract

The VEDLIoT project targets the development of energy-efficient Deep Learning for distributed AIoT applications. A holistic approach is used to optimize algorithms while also dealing with safety and security challenges. The approach is based on a modular and scalable cognitive IoT hardware platform. Using modular microserver technology enables the user to configure the hardware to satisfy a wide range of applications. VEDLIoT offers a complete design flow for Next-Generation IoT devices required for collaboratively solving complex Deep Learning applications across distributed systems. The methods are tested on various use-cases ranging from Smart Home to Automotive and Industrial IoT appliances. VEDLIoT is an H2020 EU project which started in November 2020. Autonomous driving is an area that has been growing in recent years. However, cars are unprepared to cooperate with others nearby, wasting resources and computational power. Thus, cooperative autonomous driving reveals its importance in the future. In this work-in-progress paper, we define, implement and test an architecture for a simulation environment where cooperative autonomous driving protocols can be tested. Additionally, a Manoeuvre Negotiation Protocol is implemented. Abstract

As the Internet of Things (IoT) continues to expand, data security has become increasingly important for ensuring privacy and safety, especially given the sensitive and, sometimes, critical nature of the data handled by IoT devices. There exist hardware-based trusted execution en-vironments used to protect data, but they are not compatible with low-cost devices that lack hardware-assisted security features. The research in this paper presents software-based protection and encryption mechanisms explicitly designed for embedded devices. The proposed architecture consists of two parts: the Agent, which is designed to work with low-cost, low-end devices without requiring modifications to the underlying hardware, and the Computing Module, which is designed for slightly more computationally powerful devices. The Computing Module enables devices to write data in protected memory and continuously verifies its integrity to provide protection. Additionally, it utilizes the Agents located on the device to safeguard device applications against attacks by requesting the Agent to generate an application code signature and validating it. The proposed solution is an alternative data security approach for low-cost IoT devices without compromising performance or functionality. 44. Improving bluetooth beacon-based indoor location and fingerprinting

Abstract

The complex way radio waves propagate indoors, leads to the derivation of location using fingerprinting techniques. In this cases, location is computed relying on WiFi signals strength mapping. Recent Bluetooth low energy (BLE) provides new opportunities to explore positioning. In this work is studied how BLE beacons radio signals can be used for indoor location scenarios, as well as their precision. Additionally, this paper also introduces a method for beacon-based positioning, based on signal strength measurements at key distances for each beacon. This method allows to use different beacon types, brands, and location conditions/constraints. Depending on each situation (i.e., hardware and location) it is possible to adapt the distance measuring curve to minimize errors and support higher distances, while at the same time keeping good precision. Moreover, this paper also presents a comparison with traditional positioning method, using formulas for distance estimation, and the position triangulation. The proposed study is performed inside the campus of Viseu Polytechnic Institute, and tested using a group of students, each with his smart-phone, as proof of concept. Experimental results show that BLE allows having < 1.5 m error approximately 90% of the times, and the experimental results using the proposed location detection method show that the proposed position technique has 13.2% better precision than triangulation, for distances up to 10 m.
