1. Programmable Real-Time Magnon Interference in Two Remotely Coupled Magnonic Resonators

Abstract

Magnon interference is a signature of coherent magnon interactions for coherent information processing. In this work, we demonstrate programmable real-time magnon interference, with examples of nearly perfect constructive and destructive interference, between two remotely coupled yttrium iron garnet spheres mediated by a coplanar superconducting resonator. Exciting one of the coupled resonators by injecting single- and double-microwave pulse leads to the coherent energy exchange between the remote magnonic resonators and allows us to realize a programmable magnon interference that can define an arbitrary state of coupled magnon oscillation. The demonstration of time-domain coherent control of remotely coupled magnon dynamics offers new avenues for advancing coherent information processing with circuit-integrated hybrid magnonic networks.

Abstract

We present an updated design of the 220 GHz microwave kinetic inductance detector (MKID) pixel for SPT-3G+, the next-generation camera for the South Pole Telescope. We show results of the dark testing of a 63-pixel array with mean inductor quality factor $Q_i = 4.8 \times 10^5$, aluminum inductor transition temperature $T_c = 1.19$ K, and kinetic inductance fraction $\alpha_k = 0.32$. We optically characterize both the microstrip-coupled and CPW-coupled resonators, and find both have a spectral response close to prediction with an optical efficiency of $\eta \sim 70\%$. However, we find slightly lower optical response on the lower edge of the band than predicted, with neighboring dark detectors showing more response in this region, though at level consistent with less than 5\% frequency shift relative to the optical detectors. The detectors show polarized response consistent with expectations, with a cross-polar response of $\sim 10\%$ for both detector orientations., Comment: 6 pages, 5 figures, ASC 2022 proceedings

Abstract

This is a survey of local and global classification results concerning Dupin hypersurfaces in $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$) that have been obtained in the context of Lie sphere geometry. The emphasis is on results that relate Dupin hypersurfaces to isoparametric hypersurfaces in spheres. Along with these classification results, many important concepts from Lie sphere geometry, such as curvature spheres, Lie curvatures, and Legendre lifts of submanifolds of $S^n$ (or ${\bf R}^n$), are described in detail. Abstract

Detector instrumentation is at the heart of scientific discoveries. Cutting edge technologies enable US particle physics to play a leading role worldwide. This report summarizes the current status of instrumentation for High Energy Physics (HEP), the challenges and needs of future experiments and indicates high priority research areas. The Snowmass Instrumentation Frontier studies detector technologies and Research and Development (R&D) needed for future experiments in collider physics, neutrino physics, rare and precision physics and at the cosmic frontier. It is divided into more or less diagonal areas with some overlap among a few of them. Abstract

Superconducting sensors are a key enabling technology for many HEP experiments with advances in sensor capabilities leading directly to expanded science reach. The unique materials and processes required for the fabrication of these sensors makes commercial sourcing impractical in comparison with semiconducting devices. Subsequently, the development and fabrication of new sensors are often performed at academic cleanrooms supported through HEP basic detector research and/or project funds. While this operational model has been successful to date, we are at a turning point in the history of superconducting electronics, as evidenced by the rapid growth in the field of quantum computing, when scale and sophistication of these sensors can lead to significant progress. Abstract

The applications of spin-based quantum sensors to measurements probing fundamental physics are surveyed. Experimental methods and technologies developed for quantum information science have rapidly advanced in recent years, and these tools enable increasingly precise control and measurement of spin dynamics. Theories of beyond-the-Standard-Model physics predict, for example, symmetry violating electromagnetic moments aligned with particle spins, exotic spin-dependent forces, coupling of spins to ultralight bosonic dark matter fields, and changes to the local environment that affect spins. Spin-based quantum sensors can be used to search for these myriad phenomena, and offer a methodology for tests of fundamental physics that is complementary to particle colliders and large scale particle detectors. Abstract

A wide range of quantum sensing technologies are rapidly being integrated into the experimental portfolio of the high energy physics community. Here we focus on sensing with atomic interferometers; mechanical devices read out with optical or microwave fields; precision spectroscopic methods with atomic, nuclear, and molecular systems; and trapped atoms and ions. We give a variety of detection targets relevant to particle physics for which these systems are uniquely poised to contribute. This includes experiments at the precision frontier like measurements of the electron dipole moment and electromagnetic fine structure constant and searches for fifth forces and modifications of Newton's law of gravity at micron-to-millimeter scales. It also includes experiments relevant to the cosmic frontier, especially searches for gravitional waves and a wide variety of dark matter candidates spanning heavy, WIMP-scale, light, and ultra-light mass ranges. 11. Coherent coupling of two remote magnonic resonators mediated by superconducting circuits

Abstract

We demonstrate microwave-mediated distant magnon-magnon coupling on a superconducting circuit platform, incorporating chip-mounted single-crystal Y$_3$Fe$_5$O$_{12}$ (YIG) spheres. Coherent level repulsion and dissipative level attraction between the magnon modes of the two YIG spheres are demonstrated. The former is mediated by cavity photons of a superconducting resonator, and the latter is mediated by propagating photons of a coplanar waveguide. Abstract

Planar ortho-mode transducers (OMTs) are a commonly used method of coupling optical signals between waveguides and on-chip circuitry and detectors. While the ideal OMT-waveguide coupling requires minimal disturbance to the waveguide, when used for mm-wave applications the waveguide is typically constructed from two sections to allow the OMT probes to be inserted into the waveguide. This break in the waveguide is a source of signal leakage and can lead to loss of performance and increased experimental systematic errors. Here we report on the development of new OMT-to-waveguide coupling structures with the goal of reducing leakage at the detector wafer interface. The pixel to pixel optical leakage due to the gap between the coupling waveguide and the backshort is reduced by means of a protrusion that passes through the OMT membrane and electrically connects the two waveguide sections on either side of the wafer. High frequency electromagnetic simulations indicate that these protrusions are an effective method to reduce optical leakage in the gap by ~80% percent, with a ~60% filling factor, relative to an standard OMT coupling architecture. Prototype devices have been designed to characterize the performance of the new design using a relative measurement with varying filling factors. 14. CMB-S4: Forecasting Constraints on Primordial Gravitational Waves

Abstract

CMB-S4 - the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB) experiment - is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMB measurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of the universe. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, the quest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of the experimental design. This work details the development of a forecasting framework that includes a power-spectrum-based semianalytic projection tool, targeted explicitly toward optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalar ratio, r, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensing of the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from the achieved performance of current Stage 2-3 CMB experiments to robustly forecast the science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodology allows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers a flexible way to optimize the design of future experiments, given a desired scientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semianalytic tool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection of additional complexity and verification of our forecasts with several independent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts for CMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the current reference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4 experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordial gravitational waves for r > 0.003 at greater than 5σ, or in the absence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of r < 0.001 at 95% CL.

Abstract

A hypersurface $M$ in ${\bf R}^n$ is said to be Dupin if along each curvature surface, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. A Dupin hypersurface is said to be proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M$, i.e., each continuous principal curvature function has constant multiplicity on $M$. These conditions are preserved by stereographic projection, so this theory is essentially the same for hypersurfaces in ${\bf R}^n$ or $S^n$. The theory of compact proper Dupin hypersurfaces in $S^n$ is closely related to the theory of isoparametric hypersurfaces in $S^n$, and many important results in this field concern relations between these two classes of hypersurfaces. In 1985, Cecil and Ryan conjectured on p. 184 of the book, "Tight and Taut Immersions of Manifolds," that every compact, connected proper Dupin hypersurface $M \subset S^n$ is equivalent to an isoparametric hypersurface in $S^n$ by a Lie sphere transformation. Abstract

Abstract

A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in Euclidean space $E^n$ is proper Dupin if the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M^{n-1}$, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf of its principal foliation. This paper was originally published in 1989 (see Comments below), and it develops a method for the local study of proper Dupin hypersurfaces in the context of Lie sphere geometry using moving frames. This method has been effective in obtaining several classification theorems of proper Dupin hypersurfaces since that time. This updated version of the paper contains the original exposition together with some remarks by T.Cecil made in 2020 (as indicated in the text) that describe progress in the field since the time of the original version, as well as some important remaining open problems in the field., Comment: 50 pages. Abstract

CMB-S4---the next-generation ground-based cosmic microwave background (CMB)experiment---is set to significantly advance the sensitivity of CMBmeasurements and enhance our understanding of the origin and evolution of theUniverse, from the highest energies at the dawn of time through the growth ofstructure to the present day. Among the science cases pursued with CMB-S4, thequest for detecting primordial gravitational waves is a central driver of theexperimental design. This work details the development of a forecastingframework that includes a power-spectrum-based semi-analytic projection tool,targeted explicitly towards optimizing constraints on the tensor-to-scalarratio, $r$, in the presence of Galactic foregrounds and gravitational lensingof the CMB. This framework is unique in its direct use of information from theachieved performance of current Stage 2--3 CMB experiments to robustly forecastthe science reach of upcoming CMB-polarization endeavors. The methodologyallows for rapid iteration over experimental configurations and offers aflexible way to optimize the design of future experiments given a desiredscientific goal. To form a closed-loop process, we couple this semi-analytictool with map-based validation studies, which allow for the injection ofadditional complexity and verification of our forecasts with severalindependent analysis methods. We document multiple rounds of forecasts forCMB-S4 using this process and the resulting establishment of the currentreference design of the primordial gravitational-wave component of the Stage-4experiment, optimized to achieve our science goals of detecting primordialgravitational waves for $r > 0.003$ at greater than $5\sigma$, or, in theabsence of a detection, of reaching an upper limit of $r < 0.001$ at $95\%$ CL.

23. Breast reconstruction following mastectomy in Indian women: a neglected entity

Abstract

Phyllodes tumour is a rapidly growing neoplasm with a propensity to involve the entire breast tissue. In large tumours, the treatment comprises a wide local excision or a mastectomy. A woman in her 20s from rural India presented with complaints of a recurrent left breast lump. The lump progressed to a large size, limiting her social activities and causing depression. On examination, she had a mass occupying almost the entire left breast, with stretched skin, dilated veins and pressure necrosis. There were no palpable axillary nodes. She was offered a wide local excision and reconstruction with a latissimus dorsi pedicled flap. After much discussion and clarification of some misconceptions around breast reconstruction, she underwent the planned surgery. This was followed by adjuvant radiation therapy as the histopathology was consistent with a complex phyllodes tumour with close margins. She was well at 1-year follow-up and led a good family and social life. Breast conservation and reconstruction are seldom offered as part of cancer treatment in India. All women should be offered surgical options that are oncologically safe while preserving body image, and hence healthcare providers must work towards breaking the barriers that prevent breast reconstruction.

Abstract

The third-generation South Pole Telescope camera is designed to measure the cosmic microwave background across three frequency bands (95, 150 and 220 GHz) with ~16,000 transition-edge sensor (TES) bolometers. Each multichroic pixel on a detector wafer has a broadband sinuous antenna that couples power to six TESs, one for each of the three observing bands and both polarization directions, via lumped element filters. Ten detector wafers populate the focal plane, which is coupled to the sky via a large-aperture optical system. Here we present the frequency band characterization with Fourier transform spectroscopy, measurements of optical time constants, beam properties, and optical and polarization efficiencies of the focal plane. The detectors have frequency bands consistent with our simulations, and have high average optical efficiency which is 86%, 77% and 66% for the 95, 150 and 220 GHz detectors. The time constants of the detectors are mostly between 0.5 ms and 5 ms. Abstract

We present a method using principal component analysis (PCA) to process x-ray pulses with severe shape variation where traditional optimal filter methods fail. We demonstrate that PCA is able to noise-filter and extract energy information from x-ray pulses despite their different shapes. 27. Using Lie Sphere Geometry to Study Dupin Hypersurfaces in R n.

Abstract

A hypersurface M in R n or S n is said to be Dupin if along each curvature surface, the corresponding principal curvature is constant. A Dupin hypersurface is said to be proper Dupin if each principal curvature has constant multiplicity on M, i.e., the number of distinct principal curvatures is constant on M. The notions of Dupin and proper Dupin hypersurfaces in R n or S n can be generalized to the setting of Lie sphere geometry, and these properties are easily seen to be invariant under Lie sphere transformations. This makes Lie sphere geometry an effective setting for the study of Dupin hypersurfaces, and many classifications of proper Dupin hypersurfaces have been obtained up to Lie sphere transformations. In these notes, we give a detailed introduction to this method for studying Dupin hypersurfaces in R n or S n , including proofs of several fundamental results. Abstract

Superconducting resonators have to date been used for photon detection in a non-equilibrium manner. In this paper, we demonstrate that such devices can also be used in a thermal quasi-equilibrium manner to detect X-ray photons. We have used a resonator to measure the temperature rise induced by an X-ray photon absorbed in normal metal and superconducting absorbers on continuous and perforated silicon nitride membranes. We observed two distinct pulses with vastly different decay times. We attribute the shorter pulses to non-equilibrium quasiparticle relaxation and the longer pulses to a thermal relaxation process. In addition, we have measured the temperature dependence of the X-ray induced temperature rise and decay times. Finally, we have measured the resonator sensitivity and energy resolution. Abstract

Microwave Kinetic Inductance Detectors (MKIDs) provide highly multiplexed arrays of detectors that can be configured to operate from the sub-millimeter to the X-ray regime. We have examined two tungsten silicide alloys (W5Si3 and WSi2), which are dense alloys that provide a critical temperature tunable with composition, large kinetic inductance fraction, and high normal-state resistivity. We have fabricated superconducting resonators and provide measurement data on critical temperature, surface resistance, quality factor, noise, and quasiparticles lifetime. Tungsten silicide appears to be promising for microwave kinetic inductance detectors.

Abstract

A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in a real space-form ${\bf R}^n$, $S^n$ or $H^n$ is isoparametric if it has constant principal curvatures. For ${\bf R}^n$ and $H^n$, the classification of isoparametric hypersurfaces is complete and relatively simple, but as Elie Cartan showed in a series of four papers in 1938-1940, the subject is much deeper and more complex for hypersurfaces in the sphere $S^n$. A hypersurface $M^{n-1}$ in a real space-form is proper Dupin if the number $g$ of distinct principal curvatures is constant on $M^{n-1}$, and each principal curvature function is constant along each leaf of its corresponding principal foliation. This is an important generalization of the isoparametric property that has its roots in nineteenth century differential geometry and has been studied effectively in the context of Lie sphere geometry. Abstract

If $M$ is an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere $S^n$ with four distrinct principal curvatures, then the principal curvatures $\kappa_1,...,\kappa_4$ can be ordered so that their multiplicities satisfy $m_1=m_2$ and $m_3=m_4$, and the cross-ratio $r$ of the principal curvatures (the Lie curvature) equals -1. In this paper, we prove that if $M$ is an irreducible connected proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ (or $S^n$) with four distinct principal curvatures with multiplicities $m_1=m_2 \geq 1$ and $m_3=m_4=1$, and constant Lie curvature $r=-1$, then $M$ is equivalent by Lie sphere transformation to an isoparametric hypersurface in a sphere. This result remains true if the assumption of irreducibility is replaced by compactness and $r$ is merely assumed to be constant.

We prove that any connected proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ is analytic algebraic and is an open subset of a connected component of an irreducible algebraic set. We prove the same result for any connected non-proper Dupin hypersurface in $\R^n$ that satisfies a certain finiteness condition. Hence any taut submanifold M in $\R^n$, whose tube $M_\epsilon$ satisfies this finiteness condition, is analytic algebraic and is a connected component of an irreducible algebraic set. 47. Genetic polymorphisms of the cytochrome P450 2C xenobiotic metabolising enzymes subfamily and predisposition to adenomatous polyps of the colon and rectum

Abstract

Aim: To study cytochrome P4502C subfamily gene polymorphisms in the polyp and non-polyp population of the Imperial Cancer Research Fund flexible sigmoidoscopy screening trial and establish any association with adenomatous polyps of the colon. Background: Colorectal cancer is the second most common cause of cancer deaths in the United Kingdom (1). In view of this the ICRF has set up a multicentre trial to assess the impact of screening with a once-only flexible sigmoidoscopy. It is thought that colorectal cancer and adenomatous polyps arise due to an interaction between environmental and genetic factors (2). The vast majority of environmental compounds are inert requiring activation to become carcinogens by xenobiotic metabolising enzymes. Individuals exhibiting different expression patterns of these enzymes, possibly due to genetic polymorphisms, vary in their susceptibility to the effects of environmental factors. The CYP2C subfamily enzymes are known to be involved in the metabolism of several commonly used drugs, notably, omeprazole, warfarin, nonsteroidal anti-inflammatories, tolbutamide & diazepam, as well as a number of environmental mutagens such as benz[a]pyrene (3). Methods: DNA based polymerase chain reaction and restriction fragment length polymorphism methods were used to determine the frequency of CYP2C8, 9, 18 and 19 polymorphisms (Table 17) in individuals attending the ICRF screening trial. Results: For CYP2C8 there is a reported base pair change a to c at position 390. The c base is the wild type (WT) and a allele is very rare and may not exist at all. For CYP2C18 a reported t to c base pair change at position 1154 did not appear to exist. Allele frequencies in a UK population for CYP2C9, CYP2C18 and CYP2C19 polymorphisms have been established. There was no statistically significant difference for any of the polymorphisms studied between those with adenomas and controls. There were more heterozygotes and homozygotes combined in the adenoma group for the polymorphism termed CYP2C9. This did not reach significance (p=0.064). There is evidence that this polymorphism has a dominant effect and is involved in benz[a]pyrene metabolism, a smoking carcinogen. Smoking has been shown to predispose to colorectal adenomas. Conclusions: None of the CYP2C subfamily polymorphism studied were shown to predispose to adenomatous polyps of the distal colon and rectum. CYP2C9 warrants further investigation.
