Search

Since the 1990s, the low number of students choosing to study science and technology in higher education has been on the societal agenda and many initiatives have been launched to promote awareness regarding career options. The initiatives particularly focus on increasing enrolment in the engineering programmes. This article describes and compares eight European initiatives that have been established and operated by universities (and in some cases through collaboration with other actors in society). Each initiative is summarised in a short essay that discusses motivation, organisation, pedagogical approach, and activities. The initiatives are characterised by comparing the driving forces behind their creation, how the initiative activities relate to the activities at the university, size based on the number of participants and cost per participant and pedagogical framework. There seem to be two main tracks for building outreach activities, one where outreach activities are based on the university’s normal activities, and one where outreach activities are designed specifically for the visiting students.

We present JEKYLL, a new code for modelling of supernova (SN) spectra and lightcurves based on Monte-Carlo (MC) techniques for the radiative transfer. The code assumes spherical symmetry, homologous expansion and steady state for the matter, but is otherwise capable of solving the time-dependent radiative transfer problem in non-local-thermodynamic-equilibrium (NLTE). The method used was introduced in a series of papers by Lucy, but the full time-dependent NLTE capabilities of it have never been tested. Here, we have extended the method to include non-thermal excitation and ionization as well as charge-transfer and two-photon processes. Based on earlier work, the non-thermal rates are calculated by solving the Spencer-Fano equation. Using a method previously developed for the SUMO code, macroscopic mixing of the material is taken into account in a statistical sense. In addition, a statistical Markov-chain model is used to sample the emission frequency, and we introduce a method to control the sampling of the radiation field. Except for a description of JEKYLL, we provide comparisons with the ARTIS, SUMO and CMFGEN codes, which show good agreement in the calculated spectra as well as the state of the gas. In particular, the comparison with CMFGEN, which is similar in terms of physics but uses a different technique, shows that the Lucy method does indeed converge in the time-dependent NLTE case. Finally, as an example of the time-dependent NLTE capabilities of JEKYLL, we present a model of a Type IIb SN, taken from a set of models presented and discussed in detail in an accompanying paper. Based on this model we investigate the effects of NLTE, in particular those arising from non-thermal excitation and ionization, and find strong effects even on the bolometric lightcurve. We present predictions for hydrogen and helium emission line luminosities from circumstellar matter around Type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) using time dependent photoionization modeling. ESO/VLT optical echelle spectra of the SN Ia 2000cx were taken before and up to 70 days after maximum. We detect no hydrogen and helium lines, and place an upper limit on the mass loss rate for the putative wind of less than 1.3EE{-5} solar masses per year, assuming a speed of 10 km/s and solar abundances for the wind. In a helium-enriched case, the best line to constrain the mass loss would be He I 10,830 A. We confirm the details of interstellar Na I and Ca II absorption towards SN 2000cx as discussed by Patat et al., but also find evidence for 6613.56 A Diffuse Interstellar Band (DIB) absorption in the Milky Way. We discuss measurements of the X-ray emission from the interaction between the supernova ejecta and the wind and we re-evaluate observations of SN 1992A obtained 16 days after maximum by Schlegel & Petre. We find an upper limit of 1.3EE{-5} solar masses per year. These results, together with the previous observational work on the normal SNe Ia 1994D and 2001el, disfavour a symbiotic star in the upper mass loss rate regime from being the likely progenitor scenario for these SNe. To constrain hydrogen in late time spectra, we present ESO/VLT and ESO/NTT optical and infrared observations of SNe Ia 1998bu and 2000cx 251-388 days after maximum. We see no hydrogen line emission in SNe 1998bu and 2000cx at these epochs, and we argue from modeling that the mass of such hydrogen-rich gas must be less than 0.03 solar masses for both supernovae. Comparing similar upper limits with recent models of Pan et al., it seems hydrogen-rich donors with a separation of less than 5 times the radius of the donor may be ruled out for the five SNe Ia 1998bu, 2000cx, 2001el, 2005am and 2005cf., 19 pages, 14 figures, MNRAS accepted

Left-over, ablated material from a possible non-degenerate companion can reveal itself after about one year in spectra of Type Ia SNe (SNe Ia). We have searched for such material in spectra of SN 2011fe (at 294 days after the explosion) and for SN 2014J (315 days past explosion). The observations are compared with numerical models simulating the expected line emission. The spectral lines sought for are H-alpha, [O I] 6300 and [Ca II] 7291,7324, and the expected width of these lines is about 1000 km/s. No signs of these lines can be traced in any of the two supernovae. When systematic uncertainties are included, the limits on hydrogen-rich ablated gas in SNe 2011fe and 2014J are 0.003 M_sun and 0.0085 M_sun, respectively, where the limit for SN 2014J is the second lowest ever, and the limit for SN 2011fe is a revision of a previous limit. Limits are also put on helium-rich ablated gas. These limits are used, in conjunction with other data, to argue that these supernovae can stem from double-degenerate systems, or from single-degenerate systems with a spun up/spun down super-Chandrasekhar white dwarf. For SN 2011fe, other types of hydrogen-rich donors can likely be ruled out, whereas for SN 2014J a main-sequence donor system with large intrinsic separation is still possible. Helium-rich donor systems cannot be ruled out for any of the two supernovae, but the expected short delay time for such progenitors makes this possibility less likely, especially for SN 2011fe. The broad [Ni II] 7378 emission in SN 2014J is redshifted by about +1300 km/s, as opposed to the known blueshift of roughly -1100 km/s for SN 2011fe. [Fe II] 7155 is also redshifted in SN 2014J. SN 2014J belongs to a minority of SNe Ia that both have a nebular redshift of [Fe II] 7155 and [Ni II] 7378, and a slow decline of the Si II 6355 absorption trough just after B-band maximum., Comment: 13 pages, submitted to A&A

The probable association with GRB 980425 immediately put SN 1998bw at the forefront of supernova research. Here, we present revised late-time BVRI light curves of the supernova, based on template images taken at the VLT. To follow the supernova to the very last observable phases we have used HST/STIS. Deep images taken in June and November 2000 are compared to images taken in August 2001. The identification of the supernova is firmly established. This allows us to measure the light curve to about 1000 days past explosion. The main features are a rapid decline up to more than 500 days after explosion, with no sign of complete positron trapping from the Cobolt-56 decay. Thereafter, the light curve flattens out significantly. One possible explanation is powering by more long lived radioactive isotopes, if they are abundantly formed in this energetic supernova., Comment: 13 pages, 5 figures, A&A, In press

Amusement parks offer rich possibilities for physics learning, through observations and experiments that illustrate important physical principles and often involve the whole body. Amusement parks are also among the most popular school excursions, but very often the learning possibilities are underused. In this work we have studied different teacher roles and discuss how universities, parks or event managers can encourage and support teachers and schools in their efforts to make amusement park visits true learning experiences for their students.

Using the temperature and ionization calculated in our previous paper, we model the spectral evolution of SN 1987A. The IR-catastrophe is seen in the metal lines as a transition from thermal to non-thermal excitation, most clearly in the [O I] 6300, 6364 lines. The distribution of the different zones, and therefore the gamma-ray deposition, is determined from the line profiles of the most important lines, where possible. We find the total mass of hydrogen-rich gas to be ~7.7 Msun. The helium mass derived from the line fluxes is sensitive to assumptions about the degree of redistribution in the line. The mass of the helium dominated zone is consistent with ~1.9 Msun, with a further ~3.9 Msun of helium residing in the hydrogen component. Because of uncertainties in the modeling of the non-thermal excitation of the [O I] lines, the uncertainty in the oxygen mass is considerable. In addition, masses of nitrogen, neon, magnesium, iron and nickel are estimated. The dominant contribution to the line luminosity often originates in a different zone from where most of the newly synthesized material resides. This applies to e.g. carbon, calcium and iron. The [C I] lines, mainly arising in the helium zone, indicate a substantially lower abundance of carbon mixed with helium than stellar evolution models give, and a more extended zone with CNO processed gas is indicated. The [Fe II] lines have in most phases a strong contribution from primordial iron, and at t > 600 - 800 days this component dominates the [Fe II] lines. The wings of the [Fe II] lines may therefore come from primordial iron, rather than synthesized iron mixed to high velocity. SN 1987A provides a unique opportunity to study the evolution of a supernova from explosion into very late phases. Due to the rich chemical structure, the multitude of physical process involved, and extensive radiative transfer effects, detailed modeling is needed to interpret the emission from this and other supernovae. In this paper, we analyze the late-time (~8 years) HST spectrum of the SN 1987A ejecta, where 44Ti is the dominant power source. Based on an explosion model for a 19 Msun progenitor, we compute a model spectrum by calculating the degradation of positrons and gamma-rays from the radioactive decays, solving the equations governing temperature, ionization balance and NLTE level populations, and treating the radiative transfer with a Monte Carlo technique. We obtain a UV/optical/NIR model spectrum which is found to reproduce most of the lines in the observed spectrum to good accuracy. We find non-local radiative transfer in atomic lines to be an important process also at this late stage of the supernova, with ~30% of the emergent flux in the optical and NIR coming from scattering/fluorescence. We investigate the question of where the positrons deposit their energy, and favor the scenario where they are locally trapped in the Fe/He clumps by a magnetic field. Energy deposition into these largely neutral Fe/He clumps makes Fe I lines prominent in the emergent spectrum. Using the best available estimates for the dust extinction, we determine the amount of 44Ti produced in the explosion to 1.5\pm0.5 * 10^-4 Msun., 23 pages, 9 figures. 44Ti mass updated from 1.4E-4 to 1.5E-4 Msun

An extensive dataset for SN 2003hv that covers the flux evolution from maximum light to day +786 is presented. The data are combined with published nebular-phase infrared spectra, and the observations are compared to model light curves and synthetic nebular spectra. SN 2003hv is a normal Type Ia supernova (SN Ia) with photometric and spectroscopic properties consistent with its rarely observed B-band decline-rate parameter, Delta m_15 = 1.61 +- 0.02. The blueshift of the most isolated [Fe II] lines in the nebular-phase optical spectrum appears consistent with those observed in the infrared at similar epochs. At late times there is a prevalent color evolution from the optical toward the near-infrared bands. We present the latest-ever detection of a SN Ia in the near-infrared in Hubble Space Telescope images. The study of the ultraviolet/optical/infrared (UVOIR) light curve reveals that a substantial fraction of the flux is "missing" at late times. Between 300-700 days past maximum brightness, the UVOIR light curve declines linearly following the decay of radioactive Co56, assuming full and instantaneous positron trapping. At 700 days we detect a possible slowdown of the decline in optical bands, mainly in the V band. The data are incompatible with a dramatic infrared catastrophe. However, the idea that an infrared catastrophe occurred in the densest regions before 350 days can explain the missing flux from the UVOIR wavelengths and the flat-topped profiles in the near-infrared. We argue that such a scenario is possible if the ejecta are clumpy. The observations suggest that positrons are most likely trapped in the ejecta., Comment: 20 pages, 9 figures. Late time synthetic spectra of Type Ia supernovae, based on three-dimensional deflagration models, are presented. We mainly focus on one model,"c3_3d_256_10s", for which the hydrodynamics (Roepke 2005) and nucleosynthesis (Travaglio et al. 2004) was calculated up to the homologous phase of the explosion. Other models with different ignition conditions and different resolution are also briefly discussed. The synthetic spectra are compared to observed late time spectra. We find that while the model spectra after 300 to 500 days show a good agreement with the observed Fe II-III features, they also show too strong O I and C I lines compared to the observed late time spectra. The oxygen and carbon emission originates from the low-velocity unburned material in the central regions of these models. To get agreement between the models and observations we find that only a small mass of unburned material may be left in the center after the explosion. This may be a problem for pure deflagration models, although improved initial conditions, as well as higher resolution decrease the discrepancy. The relative intensity from the different ionization stages of iron is sensitive to the density of the emitting iron-rich material. We find that clumping, with the presence of low density regions, is needed to reproduce the observed iron emission, especially in the range between 4000 and 6000 AA. Both temperature and ionization depend sensitively on density, abundances and radioactive content. This work therefore illustrates the importance of including the inhomogeneous nature of realistic three-dimensional explosion models. We present early time high-resolution (VLT/UVES) and late time low-resolution (VLT/FORS) optical spectra of the normal type Ia supernova, SN 2001el. The high-resolution spectra were obtained at -9 and -2 days to allow the detection of narrow hydrogen and/or helium emission lines from the circumstellar medium of the SN. No such lines were detected, and we therefore use photoionisation models to derive upper limits of 9x10^-6 Msun/yr and 5x10^-5 Msun/yr for the mass loss rate from the progenitor system assuming velocities of 10 km/s and 50 km/s, respectively, for a wind extending to outside at least a few x 10^15 cm away from the SN explosion site. These limits exclude a symbiotic star in the upper mass loss rate regime from being the progenitor of SN 2001el. The low resolution spectrum was obtained in the nebular phase of the SN, 400 days after the maximum light, to search for any hydrogen rich gas originating from the SN progenitor system. However, we see no signs of Balmer lines in our spectrum. Therefore, we model the late time spectra to derive an upper limit of ~0.03 Msun for solar abundance material present at velocities lower than 1000 km/s within the SN explosion site. According to simulations of Marietta et al. (2000) this is less than the expected mass lost by a subgiant, red giant or main sequence secondary star at a small binary separation as a result of the SN explosion. Finally, we discuss the origin of high velocity Ca II lines. We see both the CaII IR triplet and the H&K lines in the -9 days spectrum at a very high velocity of up to 34000 km/s. The spectrum also shows a flat-bottomed Si II `6150 A' feature similar to the one previously observed in SN 1990N at -14 days. The X-ray emission from the circumstellar interaction in Type II supernovae with a dense circumstellar medium is calculated. In Type IIL and Type IIn supernovae mass loss rates are generally high enough for the region behind the reverse shock to be radiative, producing strong radiation, particularly in X-rays. We present a model for the emission from the cooling region in the case of a radiative reverse shock. Under the assumption of a stationary flow, a hydrodynamic model is combined with time dependent ionization balance and multilevel calculations. The applicability of the steady state approximation is discussed for various values of the ejecta density gradient and different sets of chemical composition. We show how the emerging spectrum depends strongly on the reverse shock velocity and the composition of the shocked gas. We discuss differences between a spectrum produced by this model and a single-temperature spectrum. Large differences for especially the line emission are found, which seriously can affect abundance estimates. We also illustrate the effects of absorption in the cool shocked ejecta. Ground-based and Hubble Space Telescope observations are presented for SN 1993J and SN 1998S. SN 1998S shows strong, relatively narrow circumstellar emission lines of N III-V and C III-IV, as well as broad lines from the ejecta. Both the broad ultraviolet and optical lines in SN 1998S indicate an expansion velocity of ~7,000 km/s. The broad emission components of Ly-alpha and Mg II are strongly asymmetrical after day 72 past the explosion, and differ in shape from H-alpha. Different models based on dust extinction from dust in the ejecta or shock region, in combination with H-alpha from a circumstellar torus, are discussed. It is concluded, however, that the double-peaked line profiles are more likely to arise as a result of optical depth effects in the narrow, cool, dense shell behind the reverse shock, than in a torus-like region. The ultraviolet lines of SN 1993J are broad, with a box-like shape, coming from the ejecta and a cool dense shell. The shapes of the lines are well fitted with a shell with inner velocity ~7,000 km/s and outer velocity ~10,000 km/s. For both SN 1993J and SN 1998S a strong nitrogen enrichment is found, with N/C~12.4 in SN 1993J and N/C~6.0 in SN 1998S. From a compilation of all supernovae with determined CNO ratios, we discuss the implications of these observations for the structure of the progenitors of Type II supernovae., 45 pages, 13 figures. We have conducted a systematic and comprehensive monitoring programme of the Type Ia supernova 2000cx at late phases using the VLT and HST. The VLT observations cover phases 360 to 480 days past maximum brightness and include photometry in the BVRIJH bands, together with a single epoch in each of U and Ks. While the optical bands decay by about 1.4 mag per 100 days, we find that the near-IR magnitudes stay virtually constant during the observed period. This means that the importance of the near-IR to the bolometric light curve increases with time. The finding is also in agreement with our detailed modeling of a Type Ia supernova in the nebular phase. In these models, the increased importance of the near-IR is a temperature effect. We note that this complicates late-time studies where often only the V band is well monitored. In particular, it is not correct to assume that any optical band follows the bolometric light curve at these phases, and any conclusions based on such assumptions, e.g., regarding positron-escape, must be regarded as premature. A very simple model where all positrons are trapped can reasonably well account for the observations. The nickel mass deduced from the positron tail of this light curve is lower than found from the peak brightness, providing an estimate of the fraction of late-time emission that is outside of the observed wavelength range. ISO/SWS observations of SN 1987A on day 3425 show no emission in [Fe I] 24.05 microns and [Fe II] 25.99 microns down to the limits of roughly 0.39 Jy and 0.64 Jy, respectively. Assuming a homogeneous distribution of Ti-44 inside 2000 km/s and negligible dust cooling, we have made time dependent theoretical models to estimate an upper limit on the mass of ejected Ti-44. Assessing various uncertainties of the model, and checking the late optical emission it predicts, we obtain an upper limit of 1.1EE-4 solar masses. This is lower than in our previous estimate using other ISO data, and we compare our new result with other models for the late emission, as well as with expected yields from explosion models. We also show that steady-state models for the optical emission are likely to overestimate the mass of ejected Ti-44. The low limit we find for the mass of ejected Ti-44 could be higher if dust cooling is important. A direct check on this is provided by the gamma-ray emission at 1.157 Mev as a result of the radioactive decay of Ti-44., 9 pages including 3 postscript figures (AA Latex vers. 5.01) Accepted for publication in Astronomy and Astrophysics

The nucleosynthesis and production of radioactive elements in SN 1987A are reviewed. Different methods for estimating the masses of 56Ni, 57Ni, and 44Ti are discussed, and we conclude that broad band photometry in combination with time-dependent models for the light curve gives the most reliable estimates., Comment: 8 pages, 4 figs. The Crab nebula is the remnant of supernova 1054 (SN 1054). The progenitor of this supernova has, based on nucleosynthesis arguments, been modeled as an 8-10 solar mass star. Here we point out that the observations of the late light curve of SN 1054, from the historical records, are not compatible with the standard scenario, in which the late time emission is powered by the radioactive decay of small amounts of Ni-56. Based on model calculations we quantify this discrepancy. The rather large mass of Ni-56 needed to power the late time emission, 0.06[-0.03,+0.02] solar masses, seems inconsistent with abundances in the Crab nebula. The late light curve may well have been powered by the pulsar, which would make SN 1054 unique in this respect. Alternatively, the late light curve could have been powered by circumstellar interaction, in accordance with scenarios in which 8-10 solar mass stars are progenitors to `dense wind' supernovae., 5 pages, 2 figures. We present observations of the peculiar supernova SN 1998bw, which was probably associated with GRB 980425. The photometric and spectroscopic evolution is monitored up to 500 days past explosion. We also present modeling based on spherically symmetric, massive progenitor models and very energetic explosions. The models allow line identification and clearly show the importance of mixing. From the late light curves we estimate that about 0.3-0.9 solar masses of ejected Nickel-56 is required to power the supernova., Comment: With 3 figures Accepted for ApJ Letters

The temperature and ionization of SN 1987A is modeled between 200 and 2000 days in its nebular phase, using a time-dependent model. We include all important elements, as well as the primary composition zones in the supernova. The energy input is provided by radioactive decay of Co-56, Co-57, and Ti-44. The thermalization of the resulting gamma-rays and positrons is calculated by solving the Spencer-Fano equation. Both the ionization and the individual level populations are calculated time-dependently. Adiabatic cooling is included in the energy equation. Charge transfer is important for determining the ionization and is included with available and estimated rates. Full, multilevel atoms are used for the observationally important ions. As input models to the calculations we use explosion models for SN 1987A calculated by Woosley et al and Nomoto et al. The most important result in this paper refers to the evolution of the temperature and ionization of the various abundance zones. The metal-rich core undergoes a thermal instability, often referred to as the IR-catastrophe, at 600 - 1000 days. The hydrogen-rich zones evolve adiabatically after 500 - 800 days, while in the helium region both adiabatic cooling and line cooling are of equal importance after ~1000 days. Freeze-out of the recombination is important in the hydrogen and helium zones. Concomitant with the IR-catastrophe, the bulk of the emission shifts from optical and near-IR lines to the mid- and far-IR. After the IR-catastrophe, the cooling is mainly due to far-IR lines and adiabatic expansion. Dust cooling is likely to be important in the zones where dust forms. We find that the dust condensation temperatures occur later than ~500 days in the oxygen-rich zones, and the most favorable zone for dust condensation is the iron core., Comment: 53 pages, including 10 figures; ApJ (Main Journal); scheduled for April 1, 1998, Vol. 496

After ∼800 days, time-dependent effects due to long recombination and cooling times lead to a frozen-in structure of the ejecta of SN 1987A. The result is a higher bolometric luminosity, compared to models where the emitted luminosity is equal to the instantaneous energy input. Good agreement with the observed light curve of SN 1987A is obtained with an initial 57 Ni/ 56 Ni ratio 2 times the solar 57 Fe/ 56 Fe ratio, while steady state models require a factor of 2 more. Consistency with both the 57 Co mass from IR line observations, X-ray, and γ-ray observations, and from models of the nucleosynthesis can thus be obtained

The γ-ray deposition in supernovae is calculated by solving the Spencer-Fano equation. Ionization, excitation, and heating rates are presented for the different chemical composition zones of a core collapse supernova, as well as for a solar composition applicable to for example, active galactic nuclei. The thermalization in pure helium, oxygen, and iron plasmas is also discussed. The latter is of particular interest for Type Ia supernovae. Convenient analytical expressions are given to facilitate the use of these results for the calculation of the physical conditions and emission from supernovae

Freeze out effects and the IR-catastrophe are discussed for SN 1987A and for Type la SNe. We show that the light curves of the optical lines in SN 1987A provide strong evidence for the IR-catastrophe. We also argue that most optical lines are dominated by non-thermal excitation after ∼ 800 days. The level of this emission is set mainly by the total mass of the elements. Models of the [OI]λλ6300 — 64 light curve show that an oxygen mass of ∼ 1.5Mʘ is needed. Light curve models for Type la SNe display a sharp decrease in the optical flux as a result of the IR-catastrophe at ∼ 500 days, producing UBV-photometry inconsistent with observations of SN1972E by Kirshner & Oke (1975).
