1. Stepgrandmothers and Grandmothers of Stepfamilies: Role Behaviors, Role Meanings, and Grandmothering Styles.

Abstract

Research on the transition to remarriage and stepfamily formation has focused upon sociodemographic factors, the relationship between remarriage and the well-being of individual family members, and stepfamily integration. This study examined recently remarried mothers' perceptions of stepgrandmothers' and grandmothers' role behaviors, role meanings, and grandmothering styles with their grandchildren and stepgrandchildren. Subjects (N=62) were women in remarried families. From the sample of 62 mothers, perceptions of 248 grandmother/grandchild and stepgrandmother/stepgrandchild relationships were examined. Mothers' perceptions of stepgrandmothers' and grandmothers' relationships with stepgrandchildren and grandchildren were assessed using a questionnaire based on Robertson's study of grandmother/grandchild relations. The results provided considerable support for the hypotheses that higher levels of role behaviors and role meaning would be perceived in grandmother/grandchild relations than in stepgrandmother/stepgrandchild relations. Mothers perceived differences in relationships with stepgrandchildren and grandchildren during the early years of stepfamily life. (ABL)

2. Attachment style: a risk for multiple marriages?

Abstract

Individuals remarrying following divorce have a greater probability of a subsequent divorce than those marrying for the first time. Societal factors, unequal exchanges, and personality traits have been identified as risk factors for this higher probability. Attachment theory (Bowlby, 1983) suggests attachment style, as a personality trait, has implications for the higher divorce rate. The purpose of this study was to explore the relationship between attachment style and marrying multiple times. The findings indicate that multiple marriers are more likely to be avoidantly attached and less likely to be anxiously attached. A model of four developmental phases and related tasks has been designed to help stepfamily members, grandparents and professionals understand the process and problems regarding the shift to stepgrandparenthood. The phases comprise definite developmental tasks grandparents encounter as their adult-children marry spouses who have children from earlier relationships. The phases include acceptance of the losses of the earlier family and the acknowledgement of the adult-child's single status.

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the Stressors of Clergy Children and Couples Scale, an abbreviated version of the Stressors of Clergy Children Inventory. The current self-report survey was tested using 317 ministers' family members across several denominations. Tests for internal consistency reliability and construct validity indicated this scale was adequate for use in research. Recommendations for refinement and use of the scale were presented.

5. The Developmental Tasks of Adjustment to Stepgrandparenting.

Abstract

Over the past few decades, the complex nature of transitions into stepfamilies has been the focus of considerable attention. Previous scholars have established developmental tasks for remarriage, stepfamilies, and stepsibling relations. A parallel, but unique, set of developmental stages and tasks for the adjustment to stepgrandparenting occur. These adjustments to stepgrandparenting include: (1) accepting the losses; (2) accepting the adult child's single status; (3) accepting the adult child's entrance into a new relationship; and (4) establishing new relationships within the stepfamily context. These tasks and stages of adjustment to stepgrandparenting imply that the transition to stepgrandparenting is a process rather than an event. This process begins with a loss, continues through adaptation to the adult child's single parent family, and the adjustment to stepgrandparenthood. Results also imply that the transition to stepgrandparenthood is rarely a choice by grandparents. Grandparents can be involved in enhancing adjustment. The most important implication is that the unique developmental stages and qualities of stepfamilies need to be understood by extended family members as well as the stepfamily and the family life professional. 6. Attachment Style and the 'Wicked Stepmother' Spiral

Abstract

While some researchers have found that stepmothers have more difficulty than stepfathers in establishing positive relationships with their stepchildren, others have found stepmothers can, and do, have positive relationships. Stepmothers (N = 154) were surveyed to determine if adult attachment style is related to becoming a wicked stepmother. The findings indicate that attachment style does impact the likelihood to follow a downward spiral into negative relations between stepmothers and stepchildren. Particularly, stepmothers with secure and anxious attachment styles were more likely to feel inadequate in their relationships with stepchildren, while those with an avoidant style were more likely to perceive that they treat their stepchildren unfairly. Abstract

Role theory suggests that preparation for one's role contributes to clearer guidelines and less ambiguity about role performance, which in turn contribute to unity and stability of family life (Cherlin, 1978). The purpose of this study was to examine if stepmothers preparation for remarriage (observation, reading, educational programs, or talking to their spouses) influenced their relationships with stepchildren and spouses. The results indicate that stepmothers who prepare for remarriage are more involved with their stepchildren, have higher levels of communication with the children's fathers regarding child rearing issues, and have positive relationships with their stepchildren. 12. Using Structural and Process Role Theories to Explain Stepmothers' Relations with Stepchildren

Abstract

This analysis is an application of structural and process role theories to understand stepmothers' relationships with their stepchildren. By defining roles as expectations of behaviors, this research examined: (1) how stepmothers determine what is expected of them, (2) how the expectations fit with their characterization of themselves, (3) their willingness to become involved and, (4) their willingness to develop relationships with their stepchildren. Using factors associated with role expectations of stepmothering, a role theory was developed by converging process and structural role theories. Hypotheses were deduced from the theoretical propositions and were tested using a cross-sectional research design. The data were analyzed using Pearson's Product Moment and Multiple Regression Analysis. Results suggested that role theory is applicable to understanding stepmother-stepchild relations. Factors were identified which were predictive of affective relations among stepmothers and stepchildren. The strongest predictor of positive affect was shared role consensus, that is, stepmothers and stepchildren having similar expectations of stepmothering. The next factor, varied expectations of the role, had a negative affect on relations when stepfamily members had differing expectations of stepmothering. A third predictor, self-role congruence, suggested that when stepmothers identify with the role they also have positive relations with stepchildren. The fourth factor was involvement, that is, the more stepmothers are involved with stepchildren the more positive the relationship. Wicked stepmother beliefs was the final predictor with stepmothers' fears of being associated with the wicked image producing a negative affect on relations. Several implications for practice with stepfamilies are offered based on these factors. Most importantly, practitioners need to assist stepfamily members in reaching consensus on expectations of stepmothering.
