As an artist and writer who often works across disciplines and cultures, my education into effective and respectful engagement has been built on my experience working with First Nations friends, collaborators, and Elders. The aim of this paper is to explore teachings from a number of these leading thinkers, writers, and Elders on the topic of knowledge sharing, cross-cultural awareness, and ethical engagement through practice-led research. Drawing from personal experience, it will incorporate learnings that have informed a world view that has been evolving since childhood. The paper highlights the importance of giving rightful recognition to knowledge keepers and provides some guidance for readers interested in developing productive and respectful partnerships with First Nations collaborators. Here knowledge can be safely shared and celebrated as ways to understand the world around us that are restorative and regenerative. I speak as a woman of mixed European background raised in Australia on Gubbi Gubbi Country of South East Queensland, and Larrakia Country of Darwin. Culturally, I am descended from Norse, Celt, Saxon, and Druid ancestors. Through this lived experience I hope to share learnings that support the goals of reconciliation, truth telling, and First Nations determination in my home country, as well as facilitating greater awareness for people seeking to respectfully engage with Indigenous knowledge.

Vascular closure devices have become more popular in some clinical settings because they allow for quicker hemostasis and earlier ambulation. Although these devices have several benefits compared with manual compression, errors in deployment can result in a multitude of complications. We have presented two cases in which the Celt arterial closure device was maldeployed and caused significant patient morbidity.

A comprehensive analysis of ground stone celts on the Late Woodland Middle Ontario Iroquoian Dorchester Village Site (AfHg-24). Metric and non-metric traits of the celts were analyzed to gain a better understanding of ground stone tools and their uses. A greater understanding of site formation processes and the development of Late Woodland Iroquoian villages may be attained through the creation of typologies, and an analysis of tool metrics, manufacturing and use wear traits, non-chert detritus produced through manufacture, and intra-site spatial data.

Thirty eight years ago the set of bronze tools found near the Starosillia village in Gorodyshche district of Cherkasy region has been published. This Late Bronze Age deposit remains one of the most known in the region. Three «celts», sleeve chisel and cast bracelet were preserved till the present time (fig. 1). These finds are kept in the Cherkasy Museum of local history. Starosillia deposit is important in terms of identification of main intercultural connections and contacts in the late 2nd mil. BC. The evidence, obtained over the last several dozen years, makes possible the new attribution of finds, their typology, area of spread and dating. Besides this, new publication of Starosillia deposit with drawing and photos of a high quality (it should be noted that the article of D. Telegin is lacking the drawing of one «celt») is required. This is why we need to turn back to the deposit. Two «celts» belong (fig. 3, 4) to the Dichevo type (Oinacu variant) according to V. Dergachev. Their origin is linked to Lower Danube center, from where these tools were spread in the North Pontic region, the area of Noua and Sabatynivka (later — early Bilozerka) cultures. Double-eyelet «celt» (fig. 2) belongs to Kardashynka type according to V. Dergachev. Such tools were used in late Sabatynivka and early Bilozerka time. In case of the analyzed region, such tools are referred to populations of Bilozerka culture, while the related molds were mainly found in the Lower Dnieper region. This is also the case of sleeve chisels (fig. 5) which are being similar to the find from Starosillia. Cast bracelet (fig. 6) from the deposit is typical for Sabatynivka and Bilozerka cultures, from which such bracelets could spread to the area of Bilogrudivka culture. Thus, the deposition of Starosillia deposit may be dated to the early Bilozerka time (HaA1), 12th century BC, when the Middle Dnieper region was inhabited by populations of Bilogrudivka culture.

This article introduces 16 bronze weapons and horse harness items representing the Tagar culture (a dagger, ten knives, bits, a cheekpiece, an axe, a celt, and a mirror) from the Minusinsk Region, collected by G.N. Prozritelev in the early 1900s. The objective of this study is to describe them and to assess their chronology. The dagger and the three knives exemplify the animal style of500-300 BC. The cross-guard of the dagger is shaped like two oppositely facing bird heads separated by a spiral scroll. The pommels of the knives are decorated with figurines of a standing ram, a standing donkey, a ring, a roll, a drop-shaped slit, etc. The handles of two knives are decorated with a band consisting of oblique hatches, two rows of triangles, and a hoof sign. Based on the data, certain artifacts (the dagger, the knives, the cheekpiece, and the mirror) date to 600-300 BC. The axe, the celt, the bits, and possibly a massive knife with a bird’s head at the junction of the handle and blade may date to 700-500 (possibly even 800-500) BC. A considerable scatter of dates suggests that the artifacts come from different sites. They may have been part of a single hoard whose separate items span a chronological range between 700 or even 800 to 400 BC.

This essay surveys responses to Macpherson’s Ossian in Irish literature, alongside analysis of the development of literary Celticism. Despite being a key text behind the development of Celticism in Irish writing, Ossian is consciously rejected in Irish Romanticism and in the Celtic Revival. However, Ossian becomes a symbol of literary recycling and mental fragmentation in Irish Modernism. The chapter explores Casement’s Black Diaries, and their reception, through a discussion of three novels: Conan Doyle’s The Lost World (1912), Alan Hollinghurst’s The Swimming-Pool Library (1988) and Mario Vargas Llosa’s The Dream of the Celt (2010). In a move that embodies the homophobia that has so often plagued Casement’s posthumous life, Vargas Llosa depicts Casement’s Diaries as little more than the fantasies of someone deeply ashamed of their sexual taste. In The Swimming-Pool Library, Hollinghurst is able to stage the uneven power dynamics that defined Casement’s sexual encounters while also illustrating the erotic thrill offered by racial difference, contextualised through a genealogy of queer desire. Finally, the chapter concludes by engaging the Black Diaries alongside Conan Doyle’s The Lost World, which features settings and a character inspired by Casement, and explicating the novella’s insistence on the erotic quality of racial difference while also highlighting the underlying queer energy inherent to the imperial romance of the Boy’s Book.

Fresh investigation carried out in the southern part of Bonaigarh subdivision of Sundargarh district, Odisha, brought to light some very significant dimensions of lithic celt production sites located in the village Sulabhdih and its surrounding region. Not only valley floors and foothills, but slope and top of hills were also utilized for mass production of semi-finished celts, particularly chisels and adzes. Our study suggests that mass production of these craft specialized semi-finished items were probably intended for not only local use at settlement areas where these were further modified into finished products, but these were presumably transported to different regions of highland Odisha and also beyond through trade and/or exchange network. Although no datable material could be recovered during our limited section scrapping, keeping in view available dates from within Odisha, Jharkhand and Karnataka, these sites are tentatively dated to the beginning of second millennium BCE. The present paper intends to bring out some new aspects of celt production in the southern part of Bonaigarh subdivision, hitherto unknown in Odisha and other parts of the sub-continent.

The celt or rattleback, sometimes called wobblestone, has a semi-spheroidal rigid body with asymmetric mass distribution. When it is rotated on a horizontal smooth surface such as a table, it “rattles” and eventually rotates in the opposite direction. It is a toy that makes a strange motion that seems to be breaking a law of conservation of angular momentum. In this paper, we look back on the history of research on the spin reversal mechanism of the celt and consider the chirality causing spin reversal. Finally, a spin reversal phenomenon of the “chiral balancing toy” has been introduced as a novel open question.

The article is devoted to the artistic image of Joseph Conrad in the novel by Mario Vargas Llosa “The Dream of the Celt”. The researcher studies the ideological evolution of Conrad during his time in Congo. In the center of attention is the influence of the figure of the Irish liberation movement Roger Casement on the worldview of the Polish-English writer. The paper explores the concept of colonialism, one of the most significant in Joseph Conrad’s prose, particularly in period of the novel “Heart of Darkness”. In the narrative of Joseph Conrad the concept of colonialism is mostly researched from philosophic (existential) and biographical (travel to Africa) perspective. Roger Casement, in contrast to J. Conrad, is concerned about the colonial situation of both Congo and Ireland. The researcher analyzes the artistic interpretations of Konrad’s novel “The Heart of Darkness”. This novel contains existential motives. The existential essence of the “Heart of Darkness” is determined by the characters of the novel Mario Vargas Llosa’s “The Dream of the Celt”, which are leading a discussion on this topic. The place of Conrad’s image in the novel “The Dream of the Celt” and its stylistic features are determined. The novel is inherent in psychology. The relationship between Conrad and Casement is transmitted psychologically deeply. Conrad’s attitude to the Irish liberation movement acquires an existential meaning.

This article examines Preclassic Maya ritual practices and craft production by means of a study of ritual deposits containing obsidian artifacts dated mostly to the late Middle Preclassic period (700–350 b.c.) at Ceibal, Guatemala. New ritual practices developed at Ceibal during this period, possibly through political interactions and negotiation involving emerging elites and other diverse community members. Common objects in ritual deposits in the public plaza shifted from greenstone celt caches to other artifacts, including those made of obsidian. The inhabitants of Ceibal engaged in various kinds of craft production, including the manufacture of obsidian prismatic blades. They also conducted public rituals in the Central Plaza, depositing exhausted polyhedral obsidian cores and other artifacts with symbolic significance in caches and as offerings in incipient elite burials and interments of sacrificed individuals. While Oscar Wilde's attraction to Pre-Raphaelite art has been well documented, surprisingly little attention has been paid to his career-long fascination with Elizabeth Siddall (1829–62). This essay will demonstrate that Wilde's deep and abiding interest in Siddall reverberates across his only novel, The Picture of Dorian Gray (1891), to an extent that has not been considered. I will specifically argue that the suicide of Dorian Gray's lover Sibyl Vane was inspired by Elizabeth Siddall's untimely overdose. The very name Sibyl echoes Siddall, who is best known as the model for John Everett Millais's Ophelia and Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Beata Beatrix. I want to suggest that Siddall, long dead by the 1890s, may have been coded as Celtic across turn-of-the-century Irish literature in ways not hitherto considered. Although Siddall was not born of Irish parents, she served ‘as a model for “a fair Celt with red hair”’ for the Pre-Raphaelite painter William Holman Hunt, perhaps owing to the fact that she was copper-haired, ivory-skinned, Welsh, and working class. As such, Siddall ­– who has not previously been read in a Celtic context – might serve as a signifier of the young, pale, passive, red-haired Irish maiden romanticised across popular culture as a symbol of the Irish nation. Indeed, it is plausible that the Dublin-born Wilde was attracted to Siddall because of her resemblance to the aisling figure derived from the eighteenth-century Gaelic tradition and popular in turn-of-the-century Irish culture. The essay will examine closely the nods to Elizabeth Siddall in The Picture of Dorian Gray and ultimately will propose that the Pre-Raphaelite musings in Wilde – whose engagement with feminism and with his native Ireland have always been complicated – effectively, if not intentionally, silence the figure of the fin-de-siècle New Woman as she appeared across the British and Irish Isles.

Excavations at Ceibal in Guatemala have recovered numerous polished celts from contexts dating throughout the Preclassic Maya occupation of the site. The celts are made of different types of greenstone, and most were deposited in caches in public areas close to ceremonial structures. Recent study shows how deposition practices changed over time. Furthermore, microwear analysis suggests that the majority of celts did not have a practical function. It is argued, instead, that the caches of greenstone celts represent public rituals relating to the establishment of early Preclassic elites.

Situated to the east and the west of the Eurasian continent, the British Isles and Japan both possess cultures with root extending into the distant past. In both areas numerous genealogies have been fashioned from the seventh century, the time from which the first written materials are extant. These genealogies have played a central role in the determination of an awareness of history. This article introduces the Japanese translation of Kathleen Hughes’s, The Early Celtic Idea of History and the Modern Historian: An Inaugural Lecture, (Cambridge University Press; Cambridge,1977, 24 pp.). Hughes treats the era during which Christianity, a religion that served on the basis of Celtic culture, was accepted by medieval Ireland. By examining numerous genealogies, Hughes examines the development of historiography. This report introduces Hughes’s work in order foster a better understanding from a comparative perspective of the culture of genealogies and the development of historical writings in Japan.

Chapter 5 intensifies the exploration by probing a new “rite of spring” created (in 2009) by white gentrifiers of the Car City’s urban core, problematically re-enacting the settler mythology of Detroit’s 1701 founding under the French “explorer” Cadillac, in the legendary account of his dismissive encounter with a part Norman dwarf/part Native trickster deity defending the river bend. The Celto-Gallic strand of this tortured amalgamation is followed back to the European theater itself by sustained attention to the Gaelic epic, the Tain Bo Cuailnge (“The Cattle Raid of Cooley”) in supplying a rich tapestry of herder memory of water-fords as sites of border struggle, conflict reduction, and hero-initiation. In amplifying the perspective yet further along the lines of 1492’s global reach, Afro-diasporic practice in Voudou of reclaiming dead souls from abysmal waters by way of a “tight-rope” of sound and possession and of reconfiguring the Atlantic as portal of spirit-traffic from Western World to home continent by way of “feeding” the great ocean spirit, Agwe, an elaborate re-past, will mark perhaps the most audacious water-rite construction ever attempted by our species.

This paper compares the coding efficiency between the range coder in the Opus coder and the Huffman coder used in the MP-3 (MPEG-I Layer 3) and MPEG-2 AAC. The results show that the range coder has efficiency advantage of about 9 % at a rate of 128 kbps. The simulation, in a sense, indicates that transcoding from the Opus format to MP-3 or AAC format will lead to quality degradation.

The purpose of this paper is to describe the patterns of ground stone celt production in pre-contact southwestern British Columbia (3500 BP–ad 1770) and to offer hypotheses to explain those patterns derived from Coast and Interior Salish ethnographies. The mineralogy of celt production debris and celts was determined using a portable near-infrared spectrometer, and the resulting data mapped using GIS. The spatial distribution of such artifacts clearly indicates that celt production was a highly localized activity in a few centers along the Fraser River, with very little evidence of celt production anywhere else in the Salish British Columbia. Based on this evidence, it is clear that celts were exported in large numbers from very few communities and supplied a market of many hundreds of communities. The patterns evident in such data provide further resolution to the directionality and volume of exchange between celt producing and celt receiving communities. The exposition of the Rodino District museum (Altai region) has a large metal object that was accidentally discovered near the Kochki village in the central part of the Kulunda steppe. The product has a direct open sleeve and a trapezoidal working part with the blade. The morphological features of its design make the object similar to the celt of the Bronze Age found in the Ob-Irtysh interfluve, however they differ in the presence of the long blade knife and the increased width of the blade. These features bring together the considered subject and the so-called celts-blades. The tomahawk-shape mark on the working part may indicate a connection with the object world of Sargarinsk-Alexeevo or Begazy-Dandybay cultures of the Late Bronze period. The article which aims to introduce rare archaeological finds into scientific circulation, describes the tools, presents the results of X-ray fluorescence analysis of metals and considers analogies allowing attribution of the museum exhibit. The results complement the available information about the material culture of the Bronze Age people in the south of Western Siberia.

Research into broad patterns of trade and exchange in precontact British Columbia, Canada, has been very limited. This paper addresses that shortcoming by presenting the results of a mineralogical study of 1,374 stone celts and 131 sawn cores from which celts were manufactured from 196 archaeological sites across British Columbia. These artifacts were an integral part of the woodworking toolkits of aboriginal peoples in this region from ca. 3500 B.P. to around contact at about 180 B.P. The mineralogy of these artifacts was determined using a portable near-infrared spectrometer, and the resulting data mapped using Geographic Information Systems. The results of this study indicate that celt production and exchange largely occurred within five discrete celt stone regions. For two of these celt stone regions—the Salish Sea and the Canadian Plateau—1 argue that these represent interaction spheres. Only in the Salish Sea were considerable numbers of celts imported from another region. For the remaining three regions, not enough data are available on the geological distribution of various celt stones or on the spatial patterns of celt production to differentiate regional interaction from individual procurement and production.

International audience; Our field of investigation is currently the way in which the pre-Roman and pre-Christian culture of the British and Irish Isles permeates the work of William Shakespeare. The main task consists in the excavation of motifs belonging to this ancient culture. Such motifs do not always evidently appear on the surface of the text. They sometimes do, but most often, they require a thorough in depth exploration.This paper offers to examine some aspects of the (re)construction of the so called “Celtic” culture in Shakespearean drama. This has not been addressed before. In this sense we can talk of a “construction”. However, the culture in question is preexistent to our study. Therefore, we may accept the idea of “reconstruction” of a forgotten past.Firstly, since the word “Celt” is very vague, a definition of the period of time and the geographical areas involved will be needed. Then, we will explain how we came to the exploration of such a subject by developing two examples taken from Shakespeare’s King Lear. Eventually, beyond the acknowledgment and observation of motifs, we will wonder why such an aspect of cultural history has been forgotten and what its reconstruction means now.; Cet article examine la façon dont les cultures pré-romaines et pré-chrétiennes des îles britanniques et irlandaises imprègnent l’œuvre de William Shakespeare. La tâche principale est l’excavation de motifs appartenant à cette très ancienne culture, motifs qui ne sont pas toujours apparents à la surface du texte, et requièrent un examen attentif.Il s’agira d’examiner certains aspects de la (re)construction de la culture appelée « celte » dans les pièces du Barde, point peu évoqué jusqu’ici ; en ce sens, on peut donc parler d’une « construction ». Cependant, la culture en question préexiste à notre étude. Par conséquent, nous saisissons l’idée de la « reconstruction » d’un passé oublié.Après avoir défini l’ère et l’aire concernées, nous expliquerons comme nous en sommes venue à l’exploration de ce sujet en développant deux exemples tirés du Roi Lear, pour finir par nous interroger sur les raisons qui, derrière la reconnaissance et l’observation des motifs, ont fait qu’un tel aspect de l’histoire culturelle s’est vu oublié, et ce que le reconstruire veut dire aujourd’hui.

The traditional ways of conceiving learning — a process of transferring knowledge — leads to a privileging of knowledge management systems which reduce, codify and transfer information as if it were usable knowledge. This chapter explores the problematic assumptions which lie behind such approaches to knowledge management and present an alternative, Computerized Evaluative Learning Tool (CELT), which is being used to facilitate the learning of GPs. It has been designed in a way which seeks to escape some of the problems of traditional knowledge management. The chapter explores an alternative metaphor for learning 镃 that of travel – and apply post-dichotomous thinking to the learning framework. It shows the main CELT splash screen. The initial screen identifies different routes into using the system. Once the learner has completed the initial screens, they can conduct further analysis. It is important to acknowledge the social environment of learning, particularly when the learning carries emotional connotations.

"The Speaking Celt" app is an Augmented Reality companion app for museum visitors to the Keltenmuseum Hallein (Museum of Celtic Heritage) in Hallein, Pflegerplatz 5, Salzburg, Austria. Three Avatars guide the visitors through the museum. The app has been developed using Wikitude's Augmented Reality SDK (Image Recognition and 2D Tracking technology). In this case-study, I would like to talk about the user acceptance of this form of story-telling.
