International audience; The EU Renewable Energy Directive with climate and energy goalsdoes not leave room for coal-burning power plants that currentlycontribute approximately 17 million t of flue gas desulfurization (FGD)gypsum to EU manufacturers that require a total of 57 million t ofgypsum per year (EU, 2020). It is also unlikely that natural gypsumproduction in the EU can be significantly increased in the near-term.Unlike other critical raw materials (CRMs) such as rare earth elements(REEs) that constitute a relatively small volume and can be importedover long-distances, such practice is not economically feasible for thisrelatively inexpensive (per weight) bulk-commodity used in largequantities. Transport costs for natural gypsum easily surpass the productvalue, so that imports would measurably increase prices for constructionin the EU and affect millions.

Abstract

International audience; As a result of anthropic pressures, soil contamination is increasing and, consequently, compromising soil functions and impacting crop yields worldwide. Among all contaminants, potentially toxic elements (PTEs) are some of the most common and important, being able to negatively affect the growth and development of plants. Nanotechnology, an emerging field in technological sciences, offers multiple tools that can be used for this purpose. In this way, this work aimed to evaluate the potential of Fe2O3 nanomaterials (nano-Fe2O3) to alleviate metalinduced stress in barley plants (Hordeum vulgare L.), focusing on bioaccumulation patterns and on the redox homeostasis. To achieve this goal, plants grew under two agricultural soils, contaminated with different levels of PTEs, collected from an industrial area, and previously treated or not, with 1% (w/w) nano-Fe2O3. After 14 days of growth, biometric parameters, PTE bioaccumulation and biochemical endpoints, especially those related to the induction of redox disorders, were evaluated. The effectiveness of nano-Fe2O3 to reduce available PTEs in soil solution was also assessed. After exposure to contaminated soils, plant development was greatly affected, as evidenced by significant decreases in root length and fresh weight of roots and leaves. However, upon co-treatment with nano-Fe2O3 this phytotoxicity was partially recovered, with less inhibitory effects on biometric parameters, especially on the less contaminated soil. This pattern was also noticed for levels of total chlorophylls and carotenoids. Regarding the oxidative damage, both soils led to increases in Lipid Peroxidation (LP), though H2O2 levels were only increased in the most contaminated soil. In response to the co-treatment with nano- Fe2O3, barley plants exhibited less oxidative damage, which is evidenced by the decrease of H2O2 and LP in both soils. The present study revealed that nano-Fe2O3 can enhance the tolerance of barley plants to contaminated soils, possibly by limiting the occurrence of oxidative stress, through a set of modifications in the PTE (bio)availability.

Abstract

International audience; Organic salts, such as Fe, Ca, and Mg oxalates and acetates, may be widespread radiolysis and oxidation products of organic matter in Martian surface sediments. Such organic salts are challenging to identify by evolved gas analysis but the ubiquitous CO2 and CO in pyrolysis data from the Sample Analysis at Mars (SAM) instrument suite on the Curiosity rover indirectly points to their presence. Here, we examined laboratory results from SAM‐like analyses of organic salts as pure phases, as trace phases mixed with silica, and in mixtures with Ca and Mg perchlorates. Pure oxalates evolved CO2 and CO, while pure acetates evolved CO2 and a diverse range of organic products dominated by acetone and acetic acid. Dispersal within silica caused minor peak shifting, decreased the amounts of CO2 evolved by the acetate standards, and altered the relative abundances of the organic products of acetate pyrolysis. The perchlorate salts scrubbed Fe oxalate CO releases and shifted the CO2 peaks to lower temperatures, whereas with Ca and Mg oxalate, a weaker CO release was observed but the initial CO2 evolutions were largely unchanged. The perchlorates induced a stronger CO2 release from acetates at the expense of other products. Oxalates evolved ∼47% more CO2 and acetates yielded ∼69% more CO2 when the perchlorates were abundant. The most compelling fits between our organic salt data and SAM CO2 and CO data included Martian samples acquired from modern eolian deposits and sedimentary rocks with evidence for low‐temperature alteration.

Abstract

International audience; Knowing the key hydraulic traits of different genotypes at early seedling stages can potentially provide crucial information and save time for breeding programs. In the current study we investigated: (1) how root, stem and whole plant conductivities are linked to xylem traits, and (2) how the integrated hydraulic system impacts leaf water potential, gas exchange, chlorophyll a fluorescence and the growth of three coffee cultivars (clones of Coffea canephora Pierre ex Froehner cv. Conilon) with known differences in drought tolerance. The Conilon clones CL 14, CL 5 V and CL 109A, classified as tolerant, moderately tolerant, and sensitive to drought respectively, were grown under non-limiting soil-water supply but high atmospheric demand (i.e., high VPDair). CL 14 and CL 5 V displayed higher root and stem hydraulic conductance and conductivity, and higher whole plant conductivity than CL 109A, and these differences were associated with higher root growth traits. In addition, CL 109A exhibited a non-significant trend towards wider vessels. Collectively, these responses likely contributed to reduce leaf water potential in CL 109A, and in turn, reduced leaf gas exchange, especially during elevated VPDair. Even when grown under well-watered conditions, the elevated VPDair observed during this study resulted in key differences in the hydraulic traits between the cultivars corresponding to differences in plant water status, gas exchange, and photochemical activity. Together these results suggest that coffee hydraulic traits, even when grown under non-water stress conditions, can be considered in breeding programs targeting more productive and efficient genotypes under drought and high atmospheric demand.

After 14 d of growth, biometric parameters were evaluated, along with the analysis of PTEs bioaccumulation and biochemical endpoints. After exposure to contaminated soils, plant development was greatly affected, as evidenced by significant decreases in root length and biomass production. However, upon co-treatment with nano-Fe2O3, lower inhibitory effects on biometric parameters were observed. Regarding the oxidative damage, both soils led to increases in lipid peroxidation and superoxide anion concentration, though hydrogen peroxide levels were only increased in the most contaminated soil. In general, these changes in the oxidative stress markers were accompanied by an upregulation of different antioxidant mechanisms, whose efficiency was even more powerful upon soil amendment with nano-Fe2O3, thus lowering PTEs-induced oxidative damage. Altogether, the present study revealed that nano-Fe2O3 can protect the growth of barley plants under contaminated soils.

Abstract

International audience; Studies addressing the contamination of soils with microplastics (MP) are few and the impacts on soil biota are poorly known. Less than 10% of peer-reviewed publications covering the period between 1972 and 2019 addressed studies related to microplastics and terrestrial environments. Some questions can arise related with this significant environmental issue, and its impacts on soils and terrestrialecosystems, mainly whether MPs could transport contaminants (e.g. agrochemicals) on the soil matrix and if they could be carriers of pesticides to soil organisms through ingestion. In order to contribute to the understanding of these issues, earthworms (Eisenia fetida) were exposed for 14 days to OECD soils containing MPs with two different sizes [large MPs (5 mm) and small microplastics (0.250 -1 mm)], previously sprayed or not with chlorpyrifos following the dose recommended by the supplier (4 L ha-1). This agrochemical is a broad-spectrum organophosphorothionate pesticide with several agricultural applications to a variety of food and feed crops, and it is used worldwide. Acetylcholinesterase activity and thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARs) were measured to track the exposure of earthworms to the MPs alone or combined with chlorpyriphos. The behaviour of earthworms in the test containers was also assessed, as well as the movement of MPs on the soil. The concentration of chlorpyrifos in soil after 14 days differed between treatments with MPs of different sizes [17.9 ng g-1 and 2442 ng g-1 for large (5mm) and small MPs (1 mm), respectively]. Despite the ability of the MPs to release chlorpyrifos to the soil, the earthworms have firmly avoided the 1mm MPs treatment. At the lowest concentration of chlorpyrifos provided by large MPs, earthworms avoided it, but the contact time with contaminated soil was higher, as shown by the enhanced level of TBARs and acetylcholinesterase inhibition.

Abstract

Este artículo contiene 16 páginas, 6 figuras, 2 tablas., Soil degradation by water is a serious environmental problem worldwide, with specific climatic factors being the major causes. We investigated the relationships between synoptic atmospheric patterns (i.e. weather types, WTs) and runoff, erosion and sediment yield throughout the Mediterranean basin by analyzing a large database of natural rainfall events at 68 research sites in 9 countries. Principal Component Analysis (PCA) was used to identify spatial relationships of the different WTs including three hydro-sedimentary variables: rainfall, runoff, and sediment yield (SY, used to refer to both soil erosion measured at plot scale and sediment yield registered at catchment scale). The results indicated 4 spatial classes of rainfall and runoff: (a) northern sites dependent on North (N) and North West (NW) flows; (b) eastern sites dependent on E and NE flows; (c) southern sites dependent on S and SE flows; and, finally, (d) western sites dependent on W and SW flows. Conversely, three spatial classes are identified for SY characterized by: (a) N and NE flows in northern sites (b) E flows in eastern sites, and (c) Wand SW flows in western sites. Most of the rainfall, runoff and SY occurred during a small number of daily events, and just a few WTs accounted for large percentages of the total. Our results confirm that characterization by WT improves understanding of the general conditions under which runoff and SY occur, and provides useful information for understanding the spatial variability of runoff, and SY throughout the Mediterranean basin. Abstract

The main objectives of the present study were to (i) investigate the effects of mineralogy and solid-phase distribution on element bioaccessibility and (ii) perform a risk assessment to calculate the risks to human health via the ingestion pathway. Multiple discriminant analysis showed that the dust chemistry discriminates between indoor and outdoor samples. The solid-phase distribution of the elements in indoor dust indicated that a large proportion of zinc, nickel, lead, copper, and cobalt is associated with an aluminum oxy-hydroxides component, formed by the weathering of aluminum silicates. This component, which seems to influence the mobility of many trace elements, was identified for a group of indoor dust samples that probably had a considerable contribution from outdoor dust. An iron oxide component consisted of the highest percentage of chromium, arsenic, antimony, and tin, indicating low mobility for these elements. The bioaccessible fraction in the stomach phase from the unified BARGE method was generally high in zinc, cadmium, and lead and low in nickel, cobalt, copper, chromium, and antimony. Unlike other potentially toxic elements, copper and nickel associated with aluminum oxy-hydroxides and calcium carbonates were not extracted by the stomach solutions. These trace elements possibly form stable complexes with gastric fluid constituents such as pepsin and amino acid.
