Abstract

International audience; We have investigated several particles collected during each of two touchdowns of the Hayabusa2 spacecraft at the surface of the C-type asteroid 162173 Ryugu using various electron microscope techniques. Our detailed transmission electron microscopy study shows the presence of magnetite with various morphologies coexisting in close proximity. This is characteristic of CI chondrite-like materials and consistent with the mineral assemblages and compositions in the Ryugu parent body. We describe the microstructural characteristics of magnetite with different morphologies, which could have resulted from the chemical conditions (growth vs. diffusion rate) during their formation. Furthermore, we describe the presence of magnetites with a spherulitic structure composed of individual radiating fibers that are characterized by pervasive, homogeneously distributed euhedral to subhedral pores that have not been described in previous chondrite studies. This particular spherulitic structure is consistent with crystallization under nonequilibrium conditions. Additionally, the presence of a high density of defects within the magnetite fibers, the high surface/volume ratio of this morphology, and the presence of amorphous materials in several pores and at the edges of the acicular fibers further support their formation under nonequilibrium conditions. We suggest that the growth processes that lead to this structure result from the solution reaching a supersaturated state, resulting in an adjustment to a lower free energy condition via nucleation and rapid growth.

Abstract

International audience; The present work aims to better understand the relation between heat treatment (Ultra High Temperature - UHT), partial demineralization of casein micelles (CMs) dispersions and their corresponded rheological properties. A multiscale analysis (SAXS, solid state NMR and Asymmetrical Flow Field Flow Fractionation (A4F)), has been used. Different samples with different levels of calcium/phosphorous demineralization (up to −30% of calcium content) have been studied before and after UHT treatment. The present data show that CM dispersions, displaying a mild demineralization, display an important decrease in viscosity after UHT. NMR shows that, during UHT, mild demineralized samples display stronger calcium/phosphorus intake than both, the non-demineralized and the strong demineralized ones. SAXS and A4F show that UHT-dependent calcium intake, in mild demineralization dispersions, seems to be responsible for a transformation of large casein aggregates into small and denser ones. This decrease of the large aggregates is probably the main reason of the UHT-dependent decrease in viscosity. These data show that a sample with a rather small amount of demineralization can have a quite important susceptibility to UHT in terms of viscosity.

Abstract

International audience; Furan-2,5-dicarboxylic acid has been introduced in recent years as a green aromatic monomer toward the design of aromatic (co)polyesters with enhanced properties, i.e., polyethylene furanoate (PEF) that can definitely compete with its petroleum-based counterpart, i.e., polyethylene terephthalate (PET). In an attempt to produce biobased semiaromatic copolyesters in an efficient eco-friendly approach, we report herein the polycondensation of diethyl furan-2,5-dicarboxylate (DEFDC) with different aliphatic diols and diesters of variable chain length catalyzed by an immobilized lipase from Candida antarctica using a two-step polymerization reaction carried out in diphenyl ether. The influence of diol and diester chain length, the molar concentration of DEFDC, and the effect of enzyme loading were assessed via nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), gel permeation chromatography (GPC), differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and wide-angle X-ray scattering (WAXS). With high quantities of DEFDC, significant differences in terms of M̅n buildup were noticed. Only longer diols starting from octane-1,8-diol successfully reacted with up to 90% DEFDC as opposed to only 25% DEFDC reacting with short diols such as butane-1,4-diol. While varying the chain length of the diester, it was evident that shorter diols such as hexane-1,6-diol have better reactivity toward longer diesters, while dodecane-1,12-diol was reactive toward all tested diesters. The incorporation of long chain fatty dimer diols such as Pripol 2033 led to polyesters with higher M̅n and was successfully used to overcome the limitations of poor reactivity observed in the case of short diols in the presence of high furan content. The DSC results showed a pseudoeutectic behavior as a function of increasing the mol % of DEFDC, and a change in the crystalline phase was confirmed via WAXS analysis. Finally, this work showed the successful enzyme-catalyzed synthesis of several DEFDC biobased semiaromatic copolyesters with variable interesting properties that can be further optimized for possible applications in food packaging as well as other possibilities.; L'acide furane-2,5-dicarboxylique a été introduit ces dernières années en tant que monomère aromatique vert pour la conception de (co)polyesters aromatiques aux propriétés améliorées, comme le polyéthylène furanoate (PEF) qui peut définitivement concurrencer son homologue issu du pétrole, le polyéthylène téréphtalate (PET). Dans le but de produire des copolyesters semi-aromatiques d'origine biologique par une approche efficace et respectueuse de l'environnement, nous rapportons ici la polycondensation du furan-2,5-dicarboxylate de diéthyle (DEFDC) avec différents diols et diesters aliphatiques de longueur de chaîne variable, catalysée par une lipase immobilisée de Candida antarctica, en utilisant une réaction de polymérisation en deux étapes réalisée dans de l'éther diphénylique. L'influence de la longueur de chaîne des diols et des diesters, la concentration molaire de DEFDC, ainsi que l'effet de la charge enzymatique ont été évalués par Résonance Magnétique Nucléaire (RMN), chromatographie par perméation de gel (CPG), calorimétrie différentielle à balayage (DSC) et diffusion des rayons X à angle large (WAXS). Sans DEFDC, ou à faible teneur, l'augmentation de la longueur du diol n'a pas eu d'effet négatif sur la masse moléculaire moyenne en nombre (Mn) des copolyesters aliphatiques préparés. En revanche, lorsque des quantités élevées de DEFDC (plus de 40 % molaire) ont été ajoutées dans le milieu réactionnel, des différences significatives en termes d'accumulation de Mn ont été remarquées. Seuls les diols plus longs à partir de l'octane-1,8-diol ont été mis en réaction avec succès avec jusqu'à 90% de DEFDC, par opposition à seulement 25% de DEFDC avec des diols courts tels que le butane-1,4-diol. Le Mn obtenu a montré une tendance à diminuer en fonction de l'augmentation du % d'alimentation en DEFDC, surtout avec les diols courts où la diminution du Mn était plus prononcée. En faisant varier la longueur de la chaîne du diester, il était évident que les diols plus courts tels que l'hexane-1,6-diol ont une meilleure réactivité vis-à-vis des diesters plus longs, tandis que le dodécane-1,12-diol était réactif vis-à-vis de tous les diesters testés. L'incorporation de diols dimères gras à longue chaîne tels que le Pripol 2033 dans le milieu réactionnel a conduit à des polyesters avec un Mn plus élevé et a été utilisé avec succès pour surmonter les limitations de la faible réactivité observée dans le cas des diols courts en présence d'une teneur élevée en furanes. Les résultats de la calorimétrie différentielle à balayage (DSC) ont montré un comportement pseudo-eutectique caractérisé par une diminution du point de fusion (Tm) en fonction de l'augmentation du % molaire de DEFDC, suivie d'une augmentation à un % molaire plus élevé deࣙࣙ DEFDC (≥ 50%) et un changement de la phase cristalline confirmé par une analyse de diffusion des rayons X à grand angle (WAXS). Enfin, ce travail a montré la synthèse réussie par catalyse enzymatique de plusieurs copolyesters semi-aromatiques biosourcés avec des propriétés intéressantes variables, à base de DEFDC.

Abstract

International audience; The present study deals with the effect of Zn on the linear friction stir lap welding of Al to Cu or to brass with a pinless tool. Zn was considered either as a filler metal or as an element in solid solution in α-brass. The lap joint configuration with a groove machined at the top of the bottom plate was chosen in order to test for the first time the influence of liquid Zn at the interface in case of melting by avoiding its ejection. Besides, the use of a pin free tool to join three millimeters thick plates is challenging. The paper presents and discusses the macrostructure and microstructure of the various joints together with their mechanical properties. A strong emphasis is given to the lubricating action of a liquid phase on the material flow as well as on the mechanisms of phase transformations at the various interfaces. The present work reports an early investigation of the material flow in linear friction stir lap welding with a pinless tool. The lap shear tensile fracture behavior of the welds is related to their interface morphology and microstructure. In particular, the fairly good shear resistance of the brass-Zn-Al joint arises from the composite nature of its interface despite its flatness and high thickness.

Abstract

International audience; The chain shuttling ring-opening copolymerization of L-lactide with epsilon-caprolactone has been achieved using two aluminum catalysts presenting different selectivities and benzyl alcohol as chain transfer agent. A newly synthesized aminobispheno-late supported aluminum complex affords the synthesis of lactone rich poly(L-lactide-co-lactone) statistical copolymeric blocks, while Al(OiPr)3 produces semi-crystalline poly(L-lactide) rich blocks. Transalkoxylation is shown to operate efficient-ly. The crystalline ratio and glass transition temperatures of these new class of polylactide based block copolymers can be tuned by adjusting the catalysts and the comonomers ratio.

Abstract

International audience; The mechanisms and the sequence of crystallization of a Fe64B24Y4Nb6Al0.4 metallic glass were investigated experimentally. To this end, the microstructure of the metallic glass after interrupted isothermal treatments at a temperature between glass transition and primary crystallization was studied by complementary techniques, namely atom probe tomography, transmission electron microscopy and X-ray diffractometry. During the early stages of crystallization of the glass, some nanometric (Fe,Nb)B crystals nucleate first by rejecting Y at their interface, which hinders their growth. The Fe62B14Y3 dendritic phase starts growing in a second step. Longer annealings lead to the development of chemical gradients in the amorphous matrix surrounding Fe62B14Y3 crystals, which favors the nucleation of additional nanometric (Fe,Nb)2.4B crystals.

Abstract

Molecular imprinting of polymer matrices enables the creation of template-shaped cavities with high affinity for molecules of given shape and size. Here we introduce a surface molecular imprinting strategy to control the hydrogenation selectivity of various aromatic molecules over a supported palladium catalyst. This strategy involves the sequential adsorption over the metal surface of an aromatic template molecule followed by poisoners, resulting in the formation of non-poisoned active islands of predetermined shape and size. Because of steric constraints, these active islands exhibit high selectivity in the chemical conversion of aromatic molecules that correspond in size and shape to the templates. The elaborated strategy enables a practical application relevant to selective hydrogenation and removal of carcinogenic benzene from mixtures of aromatics. Molecular imprinting can facilitate size- and shape-selective reactions beyond traditional approaches based on porous materials, but is still not fully established for heterogeneous catalysts. Here a molecular imprinting approach is introduced to generate a supported palladium catalyst for the selective hydrogenation of benzene from mixtures of aromatic molecules.

Abstract

The cleavage of C-O linkages in aryl ethers in biomass-derived lignin compounds without hydrogenation of the aromatic rings is a major challenge for the production of sustainable mono-aromatics. Conventional strategies over the heterogeneous metal catalysts require the addition of homogeneous base additives causing environmental problems. Herein, we propose a heterogeneous Ru/C catalyst modified by Br atoms for the selective direct cleavage of C-O bonds in diphenyl ether without hydrogenation of aromatic rings reaching the yield of benzene and phenol as high as 90.3 % and increased selectivity to mono-aromatics (97.3 vs. 46.2 % for initial Ru) during depolymerization of lignin. Characterization of the catalyst indicates selective poisoning by Br of terrace sites over Ru nanoparticles, which are active in the hydrogenation of aromatic rings, while the defect sites on the edges and corners remain available and provide higher intrinsic activity in the C-O bond cleavage.

Abstract

International audience; Multipass friction stir processing of Fe based metallic glass ribbons interspersed between Cu plates was performed. From the first pass, the process entailed on the one hand the decrease of the Cu mean grain size in the nugget by a factor of about 5 and on the other hand the fracture, the refinement and the partial crystallization of the amorphous reinforcement. Cu diffusion also led to marked Cu enrichments in the Fe based metallic glass whose mean Cu content reached 2.7 at%. Beside the metallic glass based reinforcements, some nanometric polycrystalline copper oxides were formed and dispersed within the nugget. The nugget also experienced dynamic recovery and dynamic recrystallization which was in particular favored by the accumulation of dislocations around the reinforcements. Finally, the greater number of passes, the harder the nugget becomes.

Abstract

Fe64B24Y4Nb6 metallic glass ribbon and its bulk counterpart were characterized by conventional and high rate differential scanning calorimetry, electron probe microanalysis, in-situ X-ray diffractometry, high resolution transmission electron microscopy and instrumented microhardness. The metallic glass possesses a high glass forming ability. It is thermally stable up to 585 °C while primary crystallization of Fe2B and FeB occurs at 677 °C. Estimated by the Kissinger and Moynihan’s methods, the activation energy of glass transition was shown to be lower than that of primary crystallization. After total crystallization, the bulk alloy contains a terminal Fe solid solution, Fe2B, FeB, Fe3B8Nb7 and BFe14Y2 phases while the ribbon contains additional yttria as well. The loading and unloading curves as well as the indentation features are very suitable in order to evidence the effect of the various crystallization events on the mechanical behavior of the bulk alloy. The hardness of the amorphous and fully crystallized bulk alloys amount to 1198 ± 21 and 461 ± 65 HV0.5, respectively and their reduced Young modulus are close to 174 ± 5 GPa. The deformation ability of the fully crystallized alloy is twice that of the glassy alloy.

Abstract

International audience; Aims: In this study, benzalkonium chloride (BAC) microcapsules were developed for surface disinfection purpose and were evaluated against Listeria monocytogenes and Escherichia coli biofilms.Methods and Results: Microcapsules were prepared with two different strategies: uncomplexed BAC‐microcapsules (UBM), containing BAC and maltodextrins and complexed BAC‐microcapsules (CBM) containing BAC complexed by pectin and maltodextrins. The minimum inhibitory concentrations (MICs) of free and microencapsulated BAC was investigated against two food pathogens: L. monocytogenes and E. coli. The antibiofilm activities of UBM and CBM against L. monocytogenes and E. coli biofilms formed on stainless steel at 37°C were evaluated and compared to BAC used under its free form. MICs of encapsulated BAC were up to 4‐fold lower than those of free BAC. The UBM and CBM showed higher antibiofilm effect when compared to the free BAC.Conclusions: Overall, results demonstrated that microencapsulation enhanced the antibacterial activity of BAC against L. monocytogenes and E. coli biofilms.Significance and Impact of the Study: The application of such BAC microcapsule‐based delivery systems can improve surface disinfection procedures and reduce the required BAC concentrations and the related cytotoxicity of this antimicrobial compound.

Abstract

The present study focuses on a detailed structural investigation at atomic scale of the planar defects that appear in the olivine grains in the Allende meteorite, and it aims to clarify their nature and the related formation mechanism. The investigation was performed using advanced spectro-microscopy techniques such as atomically resolved high-angle annular dark field (HAADF) images coupled with electron energy loss spectroscopy in the scanning transmission electron microscopy mode (STEM-EELS). Two prominent structural features appear in the investigated olivine grains: (i) Exsolution platelets with a thickness between 2 and 10 nm with the spinel structure and chemical composition expressed as a solid solution between magnetite, chromite, and MgAl2O4. (ii) Thinner planar defects appeared with thickness between 2 to 4 atomic planes, which were rich in Fe and had a strong Fe3+ contribution. The structure of these defects was described by the crystalline lattice of the olivine grains with small distortion of the measured cationic distances, which can be related to Fe3+-Si substitution in the tetrahedral sites. Those metastable defects should have preceded the formation of the thicker spinel exsolutions and could have formed during an oxidizing event in the Allende parent body.

Abstract

International audience; The multiscale pore structure of a natural shale is obtained by three distinct imaging means. First, micro-tomography image data are extended to provide the spatial arrangement of the minerals and pores observable with a voxel size of 700 nm (denoted here as the macroscopic scale). Second, FIB/SEM provides a 3D representation of the porous clay matrix on the so-called mesoscopic scale (10-20 nm); a connected pore network, devoid of cracks, is obtained for two samples out of five, while the pore network is connected through cracks for two other samples out of five. Third, the nanometric pore network is characterized with tomographic STEM. Using these experimental pore structure data, permeability calculations are performed by the Lattice Boltzmann Method on the nanoscale, on the mesoscale, and on the combination of the two. Upscaling is finally done (by a finite volume approach) on the larger macroscopic scale. Calculations show that, in the absence of cracks, the contribution of the pore structure at the nanoscale, on the overall permeability, is similar to that of the mesoscale. The impact of the most recent tomographic STEM measurements on the overall transport properties is discussed.

Abstract

International audience; A series of strontium hexaferrites (Sr-HF) compounds, doped with a low amount of manganese SrFe12-xMnxO19 (where x = 0.00, 0.03 and 0.05), were prepared by a sol-gel method. Structural and microstructural characterizations were performed by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and scanning electronic microscopy (SEM) in order to determine some basic properties such as lattice parameters and particles size. Moreover, magnetic properties of the samples were measured in a temperature range from 2 to 900 K. The results show that the transition temperature (TC) decreases from 764 to 721 K with Mn doping at x = 0.05 content. Also, temperature and doping effects on the coercivity (Hc), the remanent magnetization (Mr) and the magnetization of saturation (MS) were discussed considering the Stoner - Wohlfarth model. A slight improvement of the magnetic properties (Hc =5.56 kOe, Mr =49.99 emu/g, MS =101.9 emu/g (i.e. 19.37 µB/u.f)) for low content (x = 0.03) is evidenced, yielding to promising material for permanent magnet devices. This improvement was explained by the relationship between the microstructure and to the effective magnetic anisotropy.

Abstract

The amount of colloidal calcium phosphate (CCP) nanoclusters modifies the structure and functional properties of the casein micelles. This study aims to analyze the structural changes in partially demineralized casein micelles (D-CMs) and compare them with native casein micelles (CMs) in order to provide new insights towards the subsequent changes in rehydration behavior. Two rehydration strategies were applied. First is the fast rehydration process (50 degrees C/1 h), close to the industrial practice, while the second one (25 degrees C/24 h), a slow rehydration process, used as control. The presence of large (>10 mu m) and stirring resistant aggregates in D-CMs were evidenced by Static Light Scattering, being significantly higher for D-CMs rehydrated at 50 degrees C/1 h. As evidence from the electrophoresis results, the non-covalent interactions play a major role in aggregate formation. The decrease in the CCP concentration (-15%) leads to a more loosely packed/porous structure of D-CMs (Transmission Electronic Microscopy/Cryo-Fracture), and (as observed using Nuclear Magnetic Resonance and Small Angle X-ray Scattering) the demineralization also contributes to increase disorder in the structure of the micelle. Fluorescence Spectroscopy data reveals the presence of casein-tryptophan residues in a more hydrophobic environment shedding light on the importance of hydrophobic interactions for the aggregation of D-CMs. In summary, the study sketches a clear picture of internal rearrangement of CMs structures, in partially demineralized conditions, followed by fast rehydration at high temperatures.

Abstract

International audience; Additive manufacturing, including fused deposition modelling, is a growing technology opening up wide perspectives in material sciences. However, the ability to produce suitable fire-retarded materials via this process has never been studied extensively. This work focuses on understanding the relation between reaction to fire and numerous additive manufacturing parameters. The goal was to determine the impact of those parameters on standard fire tests such as flame propagation test (UL94V) and cone calorimetry. The results were compared with material samples formulated via usual processes. On one hand, flame propagation results are impacted by many additive manufacturing parameters, such as the design of the part and the material flow. On the other hand, cone calorimeter results are only influenced by parameters having an impact on the sample mass.

Abstract

High entropy alloys present many promising properties, such as high hardness or thermal stability, and can be candidates for many applications. Powder metallurgy techniques enable the production of bulk alloys with fine microstructures. This study aimed to investigate powder metallurgy preparation, i.e., mechanical alloying and sintering, non-equiatomic high entropy alloy from the Al-Cr-Fe-Mn-Mo system. The structural and microstructural investigations were performed on powders and the bulk sample. The indentation was carried out on the bulk sample. The mechanically alloyed powder consists of two bcc phases, one of which is significantly predominant. The annealed powder and the sample sintered at 950 °C for 1 h consist of a predominantly bcc phase (71 ± 2 vol.%), an intermetallic χ phase (26 ± 2 vol.%), and a small volume fraction of multielement carbides—M6C and M23C6. The presence of carbides results from carbon contamination from the balls and vial during mechanical alloying and the graphite die during sintering. The density of the sintered sample is 6.71 g/cm3 (98.4% relative density). The alloy presents a very high hardness of 948 ± 34 HV1N and Young’s modulus of 245 ± 8 GPa. This study showed the possibility of preparing ultra-hard multicomponent material reinforced by the intermetallic χ phase. The research on this system presented new knowledge on phase formation in multicomponent systems. Moreover, strengthening the solid solution matrix via hard intermetallic phases could be interesting for many industrial applications.

International audience; This paper investigates a Non-Destructive Testing based on ultrasonic Coda Wave Interferometry technique to determine if it can be an efficient way to continuously and quantitatively measure the thickness loss due to corrosion on an S355 grade steel in 3 wt% NaCl distilled water. To do so, several electrochemical experiments in open circuit potentials and imposed anodic dissolutions (from few to tens of micrometers) are performed at stable and varying temperatures (20–30 ◦C) in aqueous NaCl. The thickness loss and corrosion rate are continuously measured with CWI thanks to a piezoelectric trasducer and verified post-experiment with an optical depth profile measurement.

Abstract

International audience; The spread of new strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms has led to the urgent need to discover and develop new antimicrobial systems. The antibacterial effects of fatty acids have been well-known and recognized since the first experiments of Robert Koch in 1881, and they are now used in diverse fields. Fatty acids can prevent the growth and directly kill bacteria by insertion into their membrane. For that, a sufficient amount of fatty acid molecules has to be solubilized in water to transfer from the aqueous phase to the cell membrane. Due to conflicting results in the literature and lack of standardization methods, it is very difficult to draw clear conclusions on the antibacterial effect of fatty acids. Most of the current studies link fatty acids' effectiveness against bacteria to their chemical structure, notably the alkyl chain length and the presence of double bonds in their chain. Furthermore, the solubility of fatty acids and their critical aggregation concentration is not only related to their structure, but also influenced by medium conditions (pH, temperature, ionic strength, etc.). There is a possibility that the antibacterial activity of saturated long chain fatty acids (LCFA) may be underestimated due to the lack of water solubility and the use of unsuitable methods to assess their antibacterial activity. Thus, enhancing the solubility of these long chain saturated fatty acids is the main goal before examining their antibacterial properties. To increase their water solubility and thereby improve their antibacterial efficacy, novel alternatives may be considered, including the use of organic positively charged counter-ions instead of the conventional sodium and potassium soaps, the formation of catanionic systems, the mixture with co-surfactants, and solubilization in emulsion systems. This review summarizes the latest findings on fatty acids as antibacterial agents, with a focus on long chain saturated fatty acids. Additionally, it highlights the different ways to improve their water solubility, which may be a crucial factor in increasing their antibacterial efficacy. We finish with a discussion on the challenges, strategies and opportunities for the formulation of LCFAs as antibacterial agents.

Abstract

International audience; In this work, a semi-empirical pyrolysis model is developed to predict the thermal decomposition behavior of an intumescent fire retardant (IFR) system consisting of ammonium polyphosphate/pentaerythritol (APP/PER) with the ratio 3:1 (wt/wt) in a low-density polyethylene (LDPE) matrix. This work is based on a previously developed semi-global reaction mechanism for the degradation of LDPE and APP/PER, which consists of two consecutive first-order reactions for the LDPE and five first and second-order reactions for the APP/PER combination. The apparent properties that define heat transport inside the pyrolyzing solid are determined via inverse modeling of cone calorimeter experiments for the pure LDPE and then for the complete IFR system. This is achieved by using the Shuffled Complex Evolution optimization algorithm. The flame heat flux in the cone calorimeter experiments is also evaluated by targeting the heat release rate (HRR) data in the optimization process of one of the cone radiative heat setups. The optimized parameters and flame heat feedback are in line with the literature and the robustness of the model is assessed by a comparison with the experimental data for a wide range of cone heat fluxes. Ignition times and peaks of HRR and total HRs are within the engineering accuracy whatever the flux conditions for both pure LDPE and the IFR system.

Abstract

International audience; Electrocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen (H2) is a sustainable way of meeting energy demands at no environmental cost. However, the sluggish anodic reaction imposes a considerable overpotential requirement. By contrast, the electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction offers the prospect of energy-saving H2 production together with urea-rich wastewater purification. In this work, a 0D/2D Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene composite was synthesized by a simple solution reaction approach under mild conditions and applied as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) in basic medium (1 M KOH+0.5 M urea). The Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene electrodes delivered a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 124 mV for HER and required 1.40 V to reach 10 mA cm–2 for UOR. The hybrid catalyst could maintain high activity after 40 h continuous catalytic reaction for both UOR and HER. Its catalytic performance was significantly improved compared to that of pure Ti3C2 MXene and Co3O4 solving the problem of insufficient exposure of active sites caused by too large particle size and agglomeration of Co3O4 particles. Notably, Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene was applied as a bifunctional catalyst for overall urea-containing water splitting, and showed certain energy saving advantages compared with other reported Co-based catalysts. This work provides a strategy for application other than noble metal-based electrode materials for urea-containing wastewater purification coupled with H2 production.

Abstract

International audience; This work investigates the capacity of a foam flow to clean stainless-steel surfaces con-taminated by bacterial biofilms. Three bacterial strains ( Escherichia coli SS2, Bacillus cereus 98/4, and Pseudomonas fluorescens Pf1) were grown for 24 h in a horizontal po-sition. Wet foam (liquid fraction of 0.5) using Sodium Dodecyl Sulfate (SDS) at 0.15 % W/W circulated through square stainless-steel ducts at different flow rates. By increasing the wall shear stress, a cleaning efficiency was observed of up to a 2.1 and 1.4 log reduction in the surface contamination for both of the two highly adherent biofilms tested, namely B. cereus and P. fluorescens compared to E. coli biofilms being totally removed. Whatever the bacterial strain and the flow condition, foam flow was more efficient in detaching biofilm than the related SDS solution without foam. A Life Cycle Assessment study was per-formed to investigate the environmental impacts of the foam cleaning. Significant en-vironmental impact benefits were observed, with a drastic reduction in water and energy consumption when compared to different no-foam in place cleaning conditions (SDS or NaOH at 60 degrees C).(c) 2022 Published by Elsevier Ltd on behalf of Institution of Chemical Engineers.

Abstract

International audience; Bimetallic catalysts have been investigated as the most efficient materials to accelerate the chemical transformations at the anode in Direct Ethanol Fuel Cells. A comparative study is presented here to synthesize Ni–Cu bimetallic nanoparticles for the ethanol oxidation reaction on three conducting polymers: poly-ortho-phenylenediamine, poly-meta-phenylenediamine, and poly-para-phenylenediamine. X-ray diffraction (XRD), Scanning Electron Microscopy (SEM), Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM), and Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy (EIS) were used to analyze the modified electrodes. A series of bimetallic Ni–Cu nanoparticles with tunable ratios were successfully synthesized by simply changing the concentrations of Nickel and Copper. It has been confirmed that the best Ni/Cu molar ratio was 25% in the aspect of catalytic performance. The electrocatalyst exhibited an excellent catalytic activity with an anodic current of 70.5 mA cm−2 at the lowest onset potential of 0.39 V with impressive stability. Ni4Cu1/PpPD should be considered as a good alternative to noble metal anode catalyst.

Abstract

International audience; An approach based on the use of a macromolecular coupling agent and the aim to improve the interfacial adhesion between piezoelectric ceramics and piezoelectric polymer matrix in piezoelectric composites is presented. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bearing a catechol moiety was used as a macromolecular coupling agent, as it is known to be miscible to piezoelectric fluoropolymers and catechol groups can strongly bind to a large variety of surfaces. Thus, entanglement between the PMMA chains and the amorphous segments of the fluoropolymer would ensure the desired interfacial adhesion. Well-defined PMMA was synthesized via RAFT polymerization using 2-cyano-2-propyl dodecyl trithiocarbonate as a chain-transfer agent. The PMMA ω-chain end was then functionalized with a catechol group via a one-pot aminolysis/thia-Michael addition procedure using a dopamine acrylamide (DA) derivative as a Michael acceptor. The presence of the catechol moiety at the chain end of PMMA was controlled by 1H NMR and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The resulting PMMA-DA was then grafted onto the surface of a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic film (i.e., a thin film of H2O2-activated (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (BNT) with a large contact area). The increase of the water contact angle confirmed the efficiency of the grafting. A commercial piezoelectric copolymer P(VDF-co-TrFE) was then spin-coated onto the modified BNT surface to form a bilayer composite. The composite cross section prepared by cryofracture was examined by scanning electron microscopy and revealed that the ceramic/polymer interface of the BNT-PMMA/P(VDF-co-TrFE) bilayer composite exhibits a much better cohesion than its counterpart composite prepared from nonmodified BNT. Moreover, the grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering confirmed that the copolymer crystal structure was not impacted by the presence of the PMMA-DA coupling agent. A strong piezoelectric response was locally detected by piezoresponse force microscopy. This study highlights the potential of PMMA-DA as a macromolecular coupling agent to improve the ceramic/polymer interface in piezoelectric composite materials.

Abstract

Fluorine is a minor yet important component of volatiles in silicate minerals, and affects greatly the physicochemical properties of the host materials. The diffusivity of fluorine provides critical information for quantitatively understanding its many effects, but very few studies have been documented. Here we evaluated the orientation-related chemical diffusion of fluorine in phlogopite, by conducting experiments on single crystal samples. Runs were carried out by the diffusion couple technique at 1 GPa and 700-800 ºC, and durations were typically 25-264 hours. Concentration profiles of fluorine in recovered samples and chemical compositions of minerals were analyzed by electron microprobe, and sample water content was determined by Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy. The results show that, under the experimental conditions, the fluorine diffusivity is on the order of 10-19 to 10-17 m2/s and is slightly anisotropic. The diffusion is fast along the direction ⊥(110) and slow along the direction ⊥(001), with the direction ⊥(010) falling between them, and the activation energy is 176 to 246 kJ/mol along the three directions. The comparison of the diffusivity data of fluorine with those reported for other species in phlogopite and fluorine in other minerals suggests a strong enhancement of the ionic diffusion along the interlayer direction, thus the diffusivity anisotropy, by the presence of molecular H2O in the system. The theoretically calculated electrical conductivity of phlogopite, by applying the Nernst-Einstein relation and our determined diffusion data, is remarkably lower than that experimentally measured for the phlogopite with the same fluorine content and with conduction dominated by fluorine. This indicates that the self diffusion of fluorine in phlogopite is much faster than its chemical diffusion, and/or that the mobility of fluorine is largely different between the diffusion and the conductivity experiments. The diffusivity data provide crucial constraints on the closure temperature of fluorine in phlogopite, which is critical for the kinetic analyses of preserved fluorine zonation in natural phlogopites.303 303

Abstract

International audience; Shergottites have provided abundant information on the volcanic and impact history of Mars. Northwest Africa (NWA) 14672 contributes to both of these aspects. It is a vesicular ophitic depleted olivine-phyric shergottite, with average plagioclase An61Ab39Or0.2. It is highly ferroan, with pigeonite compositions En49-25Fs41-61Wo10-14 like those of basaltic shergottites, e.g. NWA 12335. Olivine (Fo53-15) has discrete ferroan overgrowths, more ferroan when in contact with plagioclase than when enclosed by pyroxene. The pyroxene (a continuum of augite, subcalcic augite, and pigeonite) is patchy, with ragged ‘cores’ enveloped or invaded by ferroan pyroxene. Magma mixing may be responsible for capture of olivine and formation of pyroxene mantles. The plagioclase is maskelynite-like in appearance, but the original laths were (congruently) melted and the melt partly crystallized as fine dendrites. Most of the 14% vesicles occur within plagioclase. Olivine, pyroxene, and ilmenite occur in part as fine aggregates crystallized after congruent melting with limited subsequent liquid mixing. There are two fine-grained melt components, barred plagioclase with interstitial Fe-bearing phases, and glass with olivine dendrites, derived by melting of mainly plagioclase and mainly pyroxene, respectively. Rare silica particles contain coesite and/or quartz, and silica glass. The rock has experienced >50% melting, compatible with peak pressure >~65 GPa. It is the most highly shocked shergottite so far, at shock stage S6/7. It may belong to the group of depleted shergottites ejected at ~1 myr from Tooting Crater.

Abstract

International audience; Currently, there is renewed interest in using fatty acid soaps as surfactants. Hydroxylated fatty acids are specific fatty acids with a hydroxyl group in the alkyl chain, giving rise to chirality and specific surfactant properties. The most famous hydroxylated fatty acid is 12-hydroxystearic acid (12-HSA), which is widely used in industry and comes from castor oil. A very similar and new hydroxylated fatty acid, 10-hydroxystearic acid (10-HSA), can be easily obtained from oleic acid by using microorganisms. Here, we studied for the first time the self-assembly and foaming properties of R-10-HSA soap in an aqueous solution. A multiscale approach was used by combining microscopy techniques, small-angle neutron scattering, wide-angle X-ray scattering, rheology experiments, and surface tension measurements as a function of temperature. The behavior of R-10-HSA was systematically compared with that of 12-HSA soap. Although multilamellar micron-sized tubes were observed for both R-10-HSA and 12-HSA, the structure of the self-assemblies at the nanoscale was different, which is probably due to the fact that the 12-HSA solutions were racemic mixtures, while the 10-HSA solutions were obtained from a pure R enantiomer. We also demonstrated that stable foams based on R-10-HSA soap can be used for cleaning applications, by studying spore removal on model surfaces in static conditions via foam imbibition.

However, their specific needs are often neglected, especially in innovation processes that focus on large and expensive improvements.The H2020 project FAIRCHAIN (https://www.fairchain-h2020.eu/) proposes development and adaptation of innovations that strenghen the position of small and mid-sized farmers and processors in the food chains and allow the scale-up and expansion of the production of nutritious food at a regional level. This talk will present some technical and technological innovations devoted to SMEs and producers which may increase food sustainability: as examples the development of an innovative healthy fermented whey-based drink to upgrade the value of whey, a co-product of cheese manufacture ; the development of an innovative packaging machine for liquid or viscous food products in the dairy and fruit & vegetables and dairy sectors, using green or sustainable packaging materials and designed to fulfil hygienic requirements ; or the development of the blockchain technology to improve the traceability , transparence and information sharing, that is of major importance when increasing the number of intermediaries in the food chain.The main challenges in adopting these innovations have been identified thanks to a co-creation process and assessment framework. This talk will discuss these challenges, as well as supporting and hindering factors for putting innovations into practice and possible solutions for their successful implementation

Abstract

International audience; Rationally designed structures and elements are important for the construction of effective electrocatalysts for water splitting. Herein, we developed an ultrathin hierarchical P-doped MoS2/Ni3S2 heterostructure on nickel foam (NF) by a one-pot synthesis. Owing to its optimized electronic structure configuration and hierarchical structure with plenty of active sites, the optimized catalyst P1.0-doped MoS2/Ni3S2/NF showed promising activity for both hydrogen evolution reaction and oxygen evolution reaction in an alkaline medium requiring an overpotential of, respectively, 0.449 and 0.239 V at 100 mA cm–2. Furthermore, the P1.0–MoS2/Ni3S2/NF electrode was applied for overall water splitting using a two-electrode system. The electrolyzer achieved low cell voltages of 1.50 and 1.65 V at current densities of, respectively, 20 and 40 mA cm–2 with excellent stability over 60 h when compared with previously reported Ni3S2-based materials. The results obtained in this work highlight the prime combination of doping and interface engineering for the design of advanced materials in electrocatalysis.

Abstract

International audience; Two series of poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyvalerate) (PHBHV) and poly (3-hydroxybutyrate-co-3-hydroxyhexanoate) (PHBHHx) with different amounts of hydroxyvalerate (HV) and hydroxyhexanoate (HHx) units are compared. The influence of chemical composition on the molecular mobility in quenched samples is discussed, as well as the consequences on the aptitude to crystallize and the microstructures developed during cold-crystallization. In both quenched PHBHV and PHBHHx, Tg decreases as the content of comonomer unit increases. The HHx units (propyl side-groups) are better molecular spacers and produce a stronger Tg shift as compared to the HV units (ethyl side-groups). Copolymerization has no striking effect on the width of the glass transition and the cooperativity length in quenched samples, but in cold-crystallized samples the glass transition is dramatically broadened. When the fully amorphous copolymers are heated from the glassy state to room temperature, crystallization occurs but is largely disrupted, suggesting that the molecular environment in the amorphous phase is significantly changed. The HHx units, which are excluded from the host crystals, delay and slow down the crystallization kinetics in a stronger way as compared to the HV units, which can partially co-crystallize. The obtained crystalline phases are prone to reorganization and the residual amorphous phases appear to have strong differences in composition and large density fluctuations. A practical consequence is that microstructures with different coupling between phases, and thus different properties and stability over time, can be obtained by controlling the nature and content of the comonomer units.

Abstract

Les biphényles polychlorés (PCB) ont été largement utilisés dans le monde entier comme isolants électriques dans les transformateurs et les condensateurs de puissance, en raison de leur constante diélectrique élevée et de leur ininflammabilité. Ils étaient souvent ajoutés aux huiles minérales (OM) et utilisés comme fluides diélectriques, aujourd'hui classés comme déchets dangereux. En effet, la Convention de Stockholm vise à éliminer l'utilisation d'équipements dont la teneur en PCB est supérieure à 0,005 % en poids (= 50 ppm) d'ici 2025. L'identification et la quantification précises de petites traces de PCB contenues dans les MO représentent donc un grand défi analytique. Pour atteindre cet objectif, un procédé chromatographique simple, rentable et rapide a été développé pour séparer les PCB du MO, permettant d'obtenir des données fiables pour déterminer la concentration de PCB, réduite à 2–3 ppm. Des méthodes expérimentales et analytiques, telles que la chromatographie sur couche mince, la chromatographie sur colonne ainsi que la chromatographie en phase gazeuse couplée à la spectroscopie de masse, ont été appliquées pour acquérir un haut niveau de dosage qualitatif et quantitatif des PCB dans les MO des transformateurs. Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) were broadly applied worldwide as electrical insulators in transformers and power capacitors, due to their high dielectric constant and non-flammability. They were often added to mineral oils (MOs) and used as dielectric fluids, which are nowadays classified as hazardous waste. Indeed, the Stockholm Convention aims to eliminate the use of equipment with PCB content greater than 0.005 wt-% (=50 ppm) by 2025. Accurate identification and quantification of small traces of PCBs contained in MO thus represent a great analytical challenge. To achieve this goal, a simple, cost-effective and fast chromatographic process was developed to separate PCBs from MO, allowing to obtain reliable data to determine the concentration of PCBs, reduced to 2–3 ppm. Experimental and analytical methods, such as thin layer chromatography, column chromatography as well as gas chromatography coupled with mass spectroscopy, were applied to acquire a high level of qualitative and quantitative determination of PCBs in transformer MOs.

Abstract

Heat treatment of whey protein solution is a common industrial practice to texturise dairy derived products and meet shelf-life requirements. Thermal treatment is frequently interrupted for cleaning which consumes a large amount of water at different pH to remove deposits from the heating surface. Although it has been a research topic for decades, fouling growth models are still poorly predicted beyond the model training dataset. Here, parameters in a dynamic 2D plate heat exchanger (PHE) model were fitted to capture deposit mass when three variables are manipulated. These are whey protein concentration (0.25-2.5% w/w), calcium concentration (100 and 120 ppm) in the feed and PHE configuration, represented by the number of heating channels (5 and 10 channels). The PHE model consists of thermal, reaction, and fouling sub-models to account for the key events behind deposit formation. The PHE fouling model has a single parameter that needs re estimation if the processed whey protein solution and process conditions are slightly changed. In the past, this case specific re-estimation has hindered the prediction capability of the model. In this regard, dimensional analysis of the PHE and symbolic regression were used to create a mathematical relationship for the fouling model adjustable parameter, enabling estimation of deposit mass for a wider range of whey derivatives and process conditions. The modelling approach was validated for three different scenarios representing different thermal profiles and whey powder. The proposed methodology increases the ability to predict fouling for different operating conditions and whey protein solutions. (c) 2022 The Author(s). Abstract

International audience; The output of bio-based polyvinyl alcohol (PVA) has been growing rapidly with a substantial increase of developments both in academic and industrial research areas in the past decade, which is due to its water solubility, plasticity, and degradability. However, PVA is highly flammable with a limiting oxygen index of only 19% owning to its inherent macromolecular structure composed of carbon, hydrogen, and oxygen atoms. The demand for flame retardancy of PVA has been increased rapidly and is generally satisfied by introducing flame retardants via chemical grafting, physical blending, and coating. This review summarizes the flame retardants applied in PVA and their influence on the flammability and mechanical properties of PVA materials. The type of flame retardant additives and their application technologies for various PVA products are presented in terms of various PVA products, such as films, aerogel, fibers, foams, and bulk composites. The films dominate the whole research of flame retardant PVA materials owing to their widespread application. The fire performance and flame retardant mechanism are compared and discussed. Additionally, PVA acted as an assistant agent in some polymeric flame-retardant formulations is also discussed and reviewed.

Abstract

Background: Compared to metallic hardware, an effective bone adhesive can revolutionize the treatment of clinically challenging situations such as comminuted, articular and pediatric fractures. The present study aims at developing such a bio-inspired bone adhesive, based upon a modified mineral-organic adhesive with tetracalcium phosphate (TTCP) and phosphoserine (OPS) by incorporating nanoparticles of polydopamine (nPDA). Methods: The optimal formulation was screened using in vitro instrumental traction tests. Adhesion to bone, cohesion, setting time, and biomineralization of the optimized adhesive was then assessed with ex vivo instrumental and manual tests, compression tests, setting time measurement and simulated body fluid assay. Cytotoxicity was assessed by extraction test (ISO 10993-5). A new in vivo model was developed: the rat fibula was glued to the ipsilateral tibia, simulating the clinical scenario of autograft fixation under low mechanical load. Analysis was performed clinically, radiologically with micro-computed tomography and histologically (without decalcification). Results: The optimal formulation was found as 50%molTTCP/50%molOPS-2%wtnPDA with a liquid-to-powder ratio of 0.21 mL/g. This adhesive has a substantially stronger adhesive strength (1.0–1.6 MPa) to bovine cortical bone (after a 24-hour soak in a physiological saline) than the adhesive without nPDA (0.5–0.6 MPa), and is more quickly induced and has more abundant surface mineralization when immersed in simulated body fluid. Moreover, non-cytotoxicity of this adhesive was confirmed in vitro. In vivo, the TTCP/OPS-nPDA adhesive (n=7) was shown to be effective in stabilizing the graft without displacement (clinical success rate of 86% and 71% respectively at 5 and 12 weeks) compared to a sham control (0%). Significant coverage of newly formed bone was particularly observed on the surface of the adhesive, thanks to the osteoinductive property of nPDA. Conclusions: To conclude, the TTCP/OPS-nPDA adhesive fulfilled many clinical requirements for the bone fixation, and potentially could be functionalized via nPDA to offer more biological activities, e.g. anti-infection after antibiotics loading. Abstract

Hot dip galvanizing is a surface treatment used to form a corrosion-resistant layer on the surface of steel by dipping it in a liquid zinc bath. However, a lot of structures used for hanging or containing the parts during the process are made of steel and suffer from liquid zinc corrosion. Furthermore, Fe–Zn intermetallics formed on the surface induce an additional pickling and zinc consummation, therefore generating supplementary economic and environmental costs. In this article, two Fe-Cr-Ni-Si coatings synthetized by the slurry process on carbon steel (C22) were characterized by XRD, EDX, EPMA and EBSD analyses. Their corrosion protective properties were studied in the process imitating cyclic batch galvanizing and compared to those of uncoated carbon steel (C22) and stainless steel (316 L). The coatings were verified to be more efficient than the 316 L steel usually used for this application. After 9 cycles of no weight loss, molten zinc corrosion was linear and the same for Fe-Cr-Ni-Si coatings as for the stainless steel.

Abstract

Biofilm formation on abiotic surfaces has become a major public health concern because of the serious problems they can cause in various fields. Biofilm cells are extremely resistant to stressful conditions, because of their complex structure impedes antimicrobial penetration to deep-seated cells. The increased resistance of biofilm to currently applied control strategies underscores the urgent need for new alternative and/or supplemental eradication approaches. The combination of two or more methods, known as Hurdle technology, offers an excellent option for the highly effective control of biofilms. In this perspective, the use of functional enzymes combined with biosourced antimicrobial such as essential oil (EO) is a promising alternative anti-biofilm approach. However, these natural antibiofilm agents can be damaged by severe environmental conditions and lose their activity. The microencapsulation of enzymes and EOs is a promising new technology for enhancing their stability and improving their biological activity. This review article highlights the problems related to biofilm in various fields, and the use of encapsulated enzymes with essential oils as antibiofilm agents. Abstract

International audience; The dislocation configurations of a Ti2AlC-MAX phase deformed under severe plastic deformation by surface mechanical attrition treatment have been analyzed by transmission electron microscopy. Results show that the microstructure of the deformed Ti2AlC sample is composed of numerous 〈a〉-dislocations, which interact with each other notably with dipolar configurations. In addition, we report here 〈a〉-dislocation dissociations in the basal plane with a dissociation distance of approximately 20 nm, following the reaction 1/3 〈21 ̅1 ̅0〉⇔1/3 〈11 ̅00〉+1/3 〈101 ̅0〉. Finally, strong evidence of zonal dislocations is reported. These original results are discussed in the context of the fundamental deformation mechanisms of nanolayered ternary alloys.

Abstract

We report a comprehensive data set characterizing and quantifying the geometrically necessary dislocation (GND) density in the crystallographic frame (ραc) and disclination density (ρθ) in fine-grained polycrystalline olivine deformed in uniaxial compression or torsion, at 1000 and 1200 ∘C, under a confining pressure of 300 MPa. Finite strains range from 0.11 up to 8.6 %, and stresses reach up to 1073 MPa. The data set is a selection of 19 electron backscatter diffraction maps acquired with conventional angular resolution (0.5∘) but at high spatial resolution (step size ranging between 0.05 and 0.1 µm). Thanks to analytical improvement for data acquisition and treatment, notably with the use of ATEX (Analysis Tools for Electron and X-ray diffraction) software, we report the spatial distribution of both GND and disclination densities. Areas with the highest GND densities define sub-grain boundaries. The type of GND densities involved also indicates that most olivine sub-grain boundaries have a mixed character. Moreover, the strategy for visualization also permits identifying minor GND that is not well organized as sub-grain boundaries yet. A low-temperature and high-stress sample displays a higher but less organized GND density than in a sample deformed at high temperature for a similar finite strain, grain size, and identical strain rate, confirming the action of dislocation creep in these samples, even for micrometric grains (2 µm). Furthermore, disclination dipoles along grain boundaries are identified in every undeformed and deformed electron backscatter diffraction (EBSD) map, mostly at the junction of a grain boundary with a sub-grain but also along sub-grain boundaries and at sub-grain boundary tips. Nevertheless, for the range of experimental parameters investigated, there is no notable correlation of the disclination density with stress, strain, or temperature. However, a broad positive correlation between average disclination density and average GND density per grain is found, confirming their similar role as defects producing intragranular misorientation. Furthermore, a broad negative correlation between the disclination density and the grain size or perimeter is found, providing a first rule of thumb on the distribution of disclinations. Field dislocation and disclination mechanics (FDDM) of the elastic fields due to experimentally measured dislocations and disclinations (e.g., strains/rotations and stresses) provides further evidence of the interplay between both types of defects. At last, our results also support that disclinations act as a plastic deformation mechanism, by allowing rotation of a very small crystal volume.

Abstract

International audience; It is now well-known that the assembly of particles at fluid/fluid interfaces, and the resulting dynamical properties of such particle-laden interfaces can provide high stabilization of dispersed systems such as emulsions and foams. Here, we focus on the emerging case of “protein particles,” a novel family of bio particles. We provide an updated perspective about their definition, production, bulk and interface properties, highlighting the most recent results of the obtained bioparticle-laden interfaces, and how such protein particles can stabilize liquid dispersions. The ability of protein particles for undergoing a fast adsorption to fluid/fluid interfaces and for forming viscoelastic layers play a key role on the prevention of drainage, coalescence, or coarsening/ripening, which results in the formation of very stable particle-stabilized foams and emulsions. Therefore, protein particles are an excellent bio-based alternative to synthetic surfactants and other conventional stabilizers for ensuring the stabilization of a broad range of dispersed systems, opening new avenues for the design of new products with interest for cosmetic, food and biomedical industries.

Abstract

International audience; To meet current societal demand for more sustainable transformation processes and bioresources, these processes must be optimized and new ones developed. The evolution of various systems (raw material, food, or process attributes) can be predicted to optimize the uses of biomass for better quality, safety, economic benefit, and sustainability. Predictive modeling can guide the necessary changes and influence industrials, governmental policies and consumers decision-making. However, achieving good predictive capability requires reflection on the models and model validation, which can be difficult. This review aims to help scientists begin to predict by presenting the techniques currently used in predictive science for food and related bioproducts. First, a guideline helps readers initiate a prediction process along with final tips and a warning about the risks involved, with a particular focus on the crucial validation step. Threebroad categories of techniques are then presented: empirical, mechanistic, and artificial intelligence (or “data-driven”). For each category, the advantages and limitations of current techniques for prediction are explained in light of their current domains of applications, illustrated with literature studies and a detailed example. Thus this article provides engineering researchers information about predictive modeling which is a recent relevant development in optimization of both food and nonfood bioresources processes.Practical applications Predictive modeling is a recent development of much relevance in the optimizationof both food and nonfood bioresources processes. The goal of this article is to guide those in research or industry who would like to start predicting. Therefore, the article is intended as a primer on prediction concepts and predictive techniques for food and non-food bioresources processing. Three categories of techniques commonly used in these fields are illustrated by various examples of current applications and amore detailed example helps to understand the implementation process. An increased ability of the global scientific body to predict the outcome of various decisions, often linked or sequential, will open new avenues for designing food products with circularity in mind: maintaining value and not creating waste in the process.

Abstract

International audience; Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME) has proved to be an efficient tool for understanding the process-structure–property relationships and helping us to design materials. For instance, in cemented carbides manufacturing, one of the most critical parameters is the C-window. It is defined as the C content range for which phases detrimental to the mechanical properties are avoided. This processing window has been traditionally defined using applied thermodynamics methods. However, the deviation between equilibrium calculations and real manufacturing conditions requires big additional empirical efforts to precisely define the C-window. In this work, an ICME-based approach is proposed to redefine the processability limits of cemented carbides taking the cooling rate and the material’s initial powder size into consideration. The method relies on the interactive coupling of several adapted models and tools, to not only set the processability boundaries, but also to study the complex mechanisms interplay happening along microstructural evolution. A better understanding of these underlaying mechanisms leads to new inputs that can be used in the design of cemented carbides. In this regard, it is observed that faster cooling rates or coarser WC grades could be effectively used to prevent nucleation of the detrimental phases enlarging the C-window towards lower C contents.
