Abstract: International audience; This paper deals with fault detection and isolation (FDI) in complex embedded wired communication networks. The considered faults are soft faults which do not prevent the communication, but may evolve into hard faults, i.e. short or open circuit. A novel FDI method based on power line communication (PLC) transmission systems is proposed. In these PLC systems, the transmission coefficients between the source and each receiver are estimated for communication purposes using orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM). Health indicators and residuals are computed by comparing the online estimated transmission coefficients with the reference coefficients. A methodology for dealing with complex networks, such as bus networks, is proposed. It is based on the decomposition of the network into several Y-shaped sub-networks. Each of these sub-networks is monitored to detect the presence of a fault. The FDI method is first validated using real data extracted from a Y-shaped network test bench. Then, the proposed approach is validated on a more complex network using realistic simulated data.

Abstract: preprint: https://doi.org/10.21203/rs.3.rs-1622610/v2; International audience; Sample-return missions allow the study of materials collected directly from celestial bodies, unbiased by atmospheric entry effects and/or terrestrial alteration and contamination phenomena, using state-of-the-art techniques which are available only in a laboratory environment—but only if the collected material stays pristine. The scarcity of outer-space unaltered material recovered until now makes this material extremely precious for the potential scientific insight it can bring. To maximize the scientific output of current and future sample-return missions, the scientific community needs to plan for ways of storing, handling, and measuring this precious material while preserving their pristine state for as long as the ‘invasiveness’ of measurements allows. In July 2021, as part of the Hayabusa2 (JAXA) “Stone” preliminary examination team, we received several microscopic particles from the asteroid Ryugu, with the goal of performing IR hyper-spectral imaging and IR micro-tomography studies. Here, we describe the sample transfer, handling methods and analytical pipeline we implemented to study this very precious material while minimizing and surveilling their alteration history on Earth.

Abstract: Current quantum systems based on spin qubits are controlled by classical electronics located outside the cryostat at room temperature. This approach creates a major wiring bottleneck, which is one of the main roadblocks toward truly scalable quantum computers. Thus, we propose a scalable memristor-based programmable DC source that could be used to perform biasing of quantum dots inside of the cryostat (i.e. in-situ). This novel cryogenic approach would enable to control the applied voltage on the electrostatic gates by programming the resistance of the memristors, thus storing in the latter the appropriate conditions to form the quantum dots. In this study, we first demonstrate multilevel resistance programming of a TiO2-based memristors at 4.2 K, an essential feature to achieve voltage tunability of the memristor-based DC source. We then report hardwarebased simulations of the electrical performance of the proposed DC source. A cryogenic TiO2-based memristor model fitted on our experimental data at 4.2 K was used to show a 1 V voltage range and 100 uV in-situ memristor-based DC source. Finally, we simulate the biasing of double quantum dots enabling sub-2 minutes in-situ charge stability diagrams. This demonstration is a first step towards more advanced cryogenic applications for resistive memories such as cryogenic control electronics for quantum computers.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper we study verifiable sampling from probability distributions in the context of multi-party computation. This has various applications in randomized algorithms performed collaboratively by parties not trusting each other. One example is differentially private machine learning where noise should be drawn, typically from a Laplace or Gaussian distribution, and it is desirable that no party can bias this process. In particular, we propose algorithms to draw random numbers from uniform, Laplace, Gaussian and arbitrary probability distributions, and to verify honest execution of the protocols through zero-knowledge proofs. We propose protocols that result in one party knowing the drawn number and protocols that deliver the drawn random number as a shared secret.

Abstract: International audience; Electrochemical lithium (de)intercalation in an atomic layer deposited (ALD) TiO2 anatase thin film deposited on a planar Si /Al2O3/Pt substrate is investigated by Raman spectroscopy. An initial discharge capacity of 63 µAh cm−2 µm−1 (0.5 Li+ mole−1) is reached at C/10 rate, which increases up to 77 µAh cm−2 µm−1 upon further cycles. An excellent capacity retention is achieved over at least 100 cycles, showing the good adherence of the ALD thin film. Raman spectra of LixTiO2 (0 ≤ x ≤ 0.5) thin film electrodes point to the nucleation of the orthorhombic lithiated titanate (LT) Li0.5TiO2 phase from x = 0.1. This LT phase coexists with tetragonal TiO2 in the 0.1 ≤ x ≤ 0.4 composition domain to be pure for x = 0.5. A fully reversible transformation from orthorhombic LT to tetragonal TiO2 is observed upon the charge. The high quality of the Raman spectra allows identifying for the first time 12 modes in the 100–800 cm−1 region for the electrochemically formed LT phase. Furthermore, an appropriate Raman spectra analysis allows a reliable and quantitative determination of the thin film composition during discharge and charge. These results illustrate Raman spectroscopy is a powerful probe to scrutinize the Li insertion/extraction mechanism in TiO2 thin films.

Abstract: International audience; Razumikhin-like theorems on hyperexponential and fixed-time stability of time-delay systems are proposed for both explicitly and implicitly defined Lyapunov functions. While the former method is useful for stability analysis, the latter approach is more suitable for control synthesis. Examples of systems that can be stabilized hyperexponentially and in fixed time are given. The control parameters tuning algorithm is presented in the form of linear matrix inequalities. The numerical simulations illustrate the theoretical results.

Abstract: chapter 15; International audience; In the last decade, GaN has emerged as an excellent material for application in power electronics. The wide energy gap of gallium nitride (3.4 eV) enables high-temperature operation, while the large breakdown field (3.3 MV/cm, 11 times higher than silicon) allows to reach kV-range operation while maintaining a low on-resistance. Thanks to the high mobility of the two-dimensional electron gas at the AlGaN/GaN interface, lateral GaN transistors have a very low on-resistance; commercial products are already on the market, and new technologies are being developed, targeting the 650 V/900 V ranges. Recently, the attention toward vertical GaN transistors has constantly increased: a vertical layout allows to substantially increase current density while taking advantage of the wide bandgap and high breakdown field of GaN. Vertical transistors based on GaN are expected to find application in converters with medium high power levels (>5 to 10 kW), once the technology reaches maturity.This chapter reviews the main properties of GaN-based materials and devices. The first part focuses on the main challenges related to the growth of high-quality GaN epitaxial stacks. The second and the third parts focus on GaN lateral and vertical devices, respectively. Finally, the fourth section describes the trapping and degradation processes that limit the performance and the reliability of GaN transistors, and the related physical mechanisms. This chapter represents an ideal guide for a reader willing to enter the world of GaN devices.

Abstract: International audience; Usually, singularly perturbed models are used to justify the decomposition of the interconnected systems into the Main Dynamics (MD) and the Parasitic Dynamics (PD). In this paper, the effect of a homogeneous PD on the stability of a homogeneous MD, when Homogeneity Degrees (HD) are possibly different, is studied via ISS approach in the framework of singular perturbations. Thus, the possibilities to reduce the order of the interconnected system considering only Reduced-Order Dynamics (ROD) and neglecting PD are examined. Proposed analysis discovers three kinds of stability in the behavior of such an interconnection by assuming that both, ROD and unforced PD, are Globally Asymptotically Stable (GAS). In the first case, when the HD of both systems coincide and the Singular Perturbation Parameter (SPP) is small enough, GAS of the interconnection can be concluded. In the second case, when the HD of ROD is greater, only local stability of interconnection can be ensured. Moreover, proposed approach allows to estimate the domain of attraction for the trajectories of the interconnection as a function of the SPP. In the third case, when the HD of ROD is smaller than the HD of PD, only practical stability can be concluded, and a kind of chattering phenomenon can arise when the HD of ROD is negative. Furthermore, the asymptotic bound of the system's trajectories is also estimated in terms of the SPP.

Abstract: International audience; Reducing the energy consumption of the global IT industry requires one to understand and optimize the large software infrastructures the modern data economy relies on. Among them are the data stream processing systems that are deployed in cloud data centers by companies, such as Twitter, to process billion of events per day in real time. However, studying the energy consumption of such infrastructures is difficult because they rely on a complex virtualized software ecosystem where attributing energy consumption to individual software components is a challenge, and because the space of possible configurations is large. We present GreenFlow, a principled methodology and tool designed to automate the deployment of energy measurement experiments for data stream processing systems in cloud environments. GreenFlow is designed to deliver reproducible results while remaining flexible enough to support a wide range of experiments. We illustrate its usage and show in particular that consolidating a DSP system in the smallest number of servers that are capable of processing it is an effective way to reduce energy consumption.

Abstract: International audience; Earliest query answering (EQA) is the problem to enumerate certain query answers on streams at the earliest events. We consider EQA for regular monadic queries on hedges or nested words defined by deterministic stepwise hedge automata (dShas). We present an EQA algorithm for dShas that requires time O(c m) per event, where m is the size of the automata and c the concurrency of the query. We show that our EQA algorithm runs efficiently on regular XPath queries in practice.

Abstract: International audience; We show how to evaluate stepwise hedge automata (SHAs) with subtree projection. Since this requires to pass finite state information top-down, we introduce the notion of downward stepwise hedge automata. We then use them in order to define an in-memory and a streaming evaluator with subhedge projection for SHAs. We tune the streaming evaluator so that it can decide membership at the earliest time point. We apply our algorithms to the problem of answering regular XPath queries on XML streams. Our experiments show that subhedge projection can indeed speed up earliest query answering on XML streams.

Abstract: One of the key questions about gene regulatory networks is how to predict complex dynamical properties based on the influence graph's topology. Earlier theoretical studies have identified conditions for complex dynamical properties, like multistability or oscillations, based on topological features, like the presence of a positive (negative) feedback loop. This work follows this path and aims to find a sufficient and necessary condition for the existence of a periodic attractor in 4-dimensional (4 genes) repressilators based on a discrete modeling framework under some dynamical assumptions. These networks are extensions of the widely studied 3-dimensional repressilator, which has been used in synthetic biology to produce synthetic oscillations. While other researchers have explored specific extensions of the 3-dimensional repressilator to improve synthetic oscillation control, our work investigates all 4-dimensional networks with only inhibitions. By uncovering new insights about periodic attractors in these small networks, our findings could aid the design of new synthetic oscillations. We search for condition for period attractor in an exhaustive manner with the guide of a decision tree model. Our major contributions include: 1) discovering that, with one exception, the relations between gene regulation thresholds do not impact the existence of periodic attractors in any of the influence graphs considered in this study; 2) identifying a sufficient and necessary condition of simple form for the existence of a periodic attractor when the exception is ignored; 3) identifying new topological features of influence graphs that are necessary for predicting the existence of periodic attractor in 4-dimensional repressilators.

Abstract: International audience; The systems biology markup language (SBML) permits to represent biological models mixing reaction networks, algebraic equations, differential equations, and events. Its main objective is to exchange biological models between various tools for simulation and analysis. Such tools are, for example, Copasi, BioCham, CellDesigner, as well as more general-purpose languages such as Julia. While an XML schema formally defines the concrete syntax of SBML, there is no formal semantics. This makes it often difficult to understand the models and to design and implement correct and general interfaces from and to SBML, i.e., to use SBML as an exchange formalism for systems biology. In the present paper, we propose Core SBML, a novel language covering a large subset of SBML with clear formal semantics. Besides giving a formal definition, we define an XML syntax for Core SBML by an XML schema. We then present a compiler of a large fragment of SBML to Core SBML. We also distinguish a fragment of Core SBML with a provably correct compiler to BioCham.

Abstract: International audience; This paper investigates a Non-Destructive Testing based on ultrasonic Coda Wave Interferometry technique to determine if it can be an efficient way to continuously and quantitatively measure the thickness loss due to corrosion on an S355 grade steel in 3 wt% NaCl distilled water. To do so, several electrochemical experiments in open circuit potentials and imposed anodic dissolutions (from few to tens of micrometers) are performed at stable and varying temperatures (20–30 ◦C) in aqueous NaCl. The thickness loss and corrosion rate are continuously measured with CWI thanks to a piezoelectric trasducer and verified post-experiment with an optical depth profile measurement.

Abstract: International audience; Reaching the corneal endothelium through the topical administration of therapeutic drugs remains a challenge in ophthalmology. Besides, endothelial cells are not able to regenerate, and diseases at this site can lead to corneal blindness. Targeting the corneal endothelium implies efficient penetration through the three corneal layers, which still remains difficult for small molecules. Carbon quantum dots (CQDs) have demonstrated great potential for ocular nanomedicine. This study focuses on the corneal penetration abilities of differently charged CQDs and their use as permeation enhancers for drugs. Excised whole bovine eyes were used as an ex vivo model to investigate corneal penetration of CQDs derived from glucosamine using β-alanine, ethylenediamine, or spermidine as a passivation agent. It was found that negatively charged CQDs have limited corneal penetration ability, while positively charged CQDs derived from glucosamine hydrochloride and spermidine (CQD-S) penetrate the entire corneal epithelium all the way down to the endothelium. CQD-S were shown to enhance the penetration of FITC-dextran 150 kDa, suggesting that they could be used as efficient penetration enhancers for therapeutic delivery to the corneal endothelium.

Abstract: International audience; In order to facilitate the development of wrist-worn vibrotactile devices, detailed knowledge about how vibrations are perceived by the users is needed. In particular, perceptual thresholds in amplitude are really important. Thresholds have been measured in the literature for other areas of the body, but given the variability reported between areas (shape of the threshold curve, position of maximum sensitivity), thresholds on the wrist can not be inferred from previous measurements and must be measured. The amplitude thresholds for vibrations normal to the skin surface were evaluated on 28 participants, with a three interval forced choice method. They were measured for 7 frequencies that are classical in the literature about vibrotactile perception (25, 40, 80, 160, 250, 320, and 640 Hz). The classical U-shape of the amplitude-threshold curve is observed, with a maximum sensitivity at around 160 Hz, which differs from other body areas, but confirms recent results obtained for vibrations parallel to the skin surface of the same body area. The sensitivity thresholds of vibrotactile signals appear to be in the micrometer range.

Abstract: We report a study on the relationship between structure and electron transport properties of nanoscale graphene/pentacene interfaces. We fabricated graphene/pentacene interfaces from 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene nanostructures down to two-three layers (2L-3L) dendritic pentacene islands, and we measured their electron transport properties by conductive atomic force microscopy (C-AFM). The energy barrier at the interfaces, i.e. the energy position of the pentacene highest occupied molecular orbital (HOMO) with respect to the Fermi energy of the graphene and the C-AFM metal tip, are determined and discussed with the appropriate electron transport model (double Schottky diode model and Landauer-Buttiker model, respectively) taking into account the voltage-dependent charge doping of graphene. In both types of samples, the energy barrier at the graphene/pentacene interface is slightly larger than that at the pentacene/metal tip interface, resulting in 0.47-0.55 eV and 0.21-0.34 eV, respectively, for the 10-30 nm thick needle-like pentacene islands, and in 0.92-1.44 eV and 0.67-1.05 eV, respectively, for the 2L-3L thick dendritic pentacene nanostructures. Abstract: International audience; The upcycling of waste polymers into novel materials with high added value is a vital task for modern chemical engineering. Here, we propose diversifying waste polyethylene terephthalate (PET) upcycling to materials with enhanced photothermal properties by laser-assisted carbonization of surface-grown UiO-66. The UiO-66 homogenous layer was formed using a solvo-thermal procedure on the surface of recycled PET sheets. The treatment by a 405 nm laser system allowed the formation of a carbonaceous layer with enhanced electrical conductivity and photothermal properties due to the presence of zirconium carbide and graphene. The developed approach opens new perspectives in the application of upcycled PET-based materials.

Abstract: International audience; Electrocatalytic water splitting to produce hydrogen (H2) is a sustainable way of meeting energy demands at no environmental cost. However, the sluggish anodic reaction imposes a considerable overpotential requirement. By contrast, the electrocatalytic urea oxidation reaction offers the prospect of energy-saving H2 production together with urea-rich wastewater purification. In this work, a 0D/2D Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene composite was synthesized by a simple solution reaction approach under mild conditions and applied as an efficient and stable electrocatalyst for hydrogen evolution reaction (HER) and urea oxidation reaction (UOR) in basic medium (1 M KOH+0.5 M urea). The Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene electrodes delivered a current density of 10 mA cm–2 at an overpotential of 124 mV for HER and required 1.40 V to reach 10 mA cm–2 for UOR. The hybrid catalyst could maintain high activity after 40 h continuous catalytic reaction for both UOR and HER. Its catalytic performance was significantly improved compared to that of pure Ti3C2 MXene and Co3O4 solving the problem of insufficient exposure of active sites caused by too large particle size and agglomeration of Co3O4 particles. Notably, Co3O4/Ti3C2 MXene was applied as a bifunctional catalyst for overall urea-containing water splitting, and showed certain energy saving advantages compared with other reported Co-based catalysts. This work provides a strategy for application other than noble metal-based electrode materials for urea-containing wastewater purification coupled with H2 production.

Abstract: International audience; Graphons are limits of large graphs. Motivated by a theoretical problem from statistical relational learning, we develop a generalization of basic results from graphon theory into the "multi-relational" setting. We show that their multi-relational counterparts, which we call multi-relational graphons, are analogically limits of large multi-relational graphs. We extend the cutdistance topology for graphons to multi-relational graphons and prove its compactness and the density of multi-relational graphs in this topology. In turn, compactness enables to prove the large deviation principle for Multi-Relational Graphs (LDP) which enables to prove the most typical random graphs constrained by marginal statistics converge asymptotically to constrained multirelational graphons with maximum entropy. We show the equivalence between a restricted version of Markov Logic Network and Multi-Relational Graphons with maximum entropy.

Abstract: International audience; The aim of this article is to detect electron traps in AlInN/GaN transistors operating at room temperature by combining pulsed electrical measurement with photoionization techniques to rapidly assess their activation energies and time constants. In addition, this technique can also reveal the presence of electron traps that cannot be observed by using pulsed measurements alone. Thus, two electron traps were identified including a deep level whose origin could be related to dislocations in the GaN buffer existing in the devices. At the same time, this study has shown that the time constants of these electron traps are inferior to 400 ns and that the electrical behavior of the components is also degraded by the presence of surface states with a time constant of 4 μ s. Moreover, these two traps are at the origin of the gate lag effects observed during the pulsed electrical characterization of the AlInN/GaN high electron mobility transistors (HEMTs). Likewise, a negative output conductance induced by a trapping effect has been put forward.

Abstract: International audience; Random disturbance presents a reliability and a safety defy for quadrotor control, This research demonstrates an adaptive linear quadratic Gaussian (LQG) control of quadrotor, exploiting a novel faster full state observer based on an extended Kalman filter enhanced by the Madgwick method, using data fusion of multiple asynchronous sensors, subjected to track a remotely generated Spline trajectory for obstacle avoidance. The dynamics model of the quadrotor was derived using Newton Euler formalism; furthermore, its linearization was processed by the Jacobian matrix at every estimated state. The enhanced state observer is essentially based on a continuous-discrete nonlinear Kalman filter combined with the optimization of Madgwick method for quaternion orientation. The approach relies on flight dynamics predictions and gets updated by the onboard measurement of sensors at different feeding rates. A discrete linear quadratic tracker was developed for best tracking performance and robustness while avoiding collision with predefined static obstacles. Quaternion orientations and attitude and heading reference system were validated by experimental tests at less than one degree of precision error, whereas the proposed adaptive LQG control of quadrotor was simulated for tracking control and validated in Simulink environment in the presence of Gaussian random perturbations, LQG performance has been compared to the linear inner-outer looping PID, integral backstepping (IBS), and decentralized fuzzy logic control (FLC) strategies. Obtained results validated the effectiveness and robustness of the opted methodology.

Abstract: International audience; An easy, effective and eco-friendly one-pot process for the preparation of 4H-pyran compounds has been established by using a catalytic amount of reduced graphene oxide functionalized with diethylenetriamine (rGO-DETA) in water under mild conditions. The functionalized catalyst was very effective for this one-pot reaction and provided the desired products 1a-t with good to high yields (87-97%) in short reaction times. Moreover, rGO-DETA composite could be reused for four cycles without obvious decrease of its performance. In the next step, two pyran derivatives 1f and 1h were used to synthesize the corresponding pyran-like tacrine derivatives 3f and 3h via the reaction of cyclohexanone, aluminum trichloride in reflux of 1,2-dichloroethane as solvent. Antibacterial activity of several of the prepared compounds was assessed against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria by well and disk diffusion techniques. The 4H-pyran 1g and 1s (2000 μg/mL) were effective against M. luteus as Gram-positive bacterium by recording a zone of inhibition of 15 and 16 mm, respectively. 4H-pyran 1m showed a moderate antibacterial behavior against both M. luteus and S. marcescens. Pyran-like tacrine analogue 3f (50 mg/mL) displayed antibacterial behavior towards S. aureus as Gram-positive and S. marcescens as Gram-negative bacteria with zones of inhibition of 13 and 12 mm, respectively. 4H-pyran 1j featured a minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) value 39.06 μg/mL for M. Luteus, which is the closest value to ampicillin.

Abstract: International audience; In this work, we propose an optimization scheme based on a multi-objective Genetic Algorithm (GA) for the design of orthogonal filter banks for speech compression. A parameterization is adopted to assure that the resulting filter banks satisfy perfect reconstruction and have at least two vanishing moments. We search for a parameter set that optimizes the coding gain and the frequency selectivity. As the objectives are conflicting, we investigate the solution that realizes the best compromise between the objectives criteria using the Non-dominated Sorting Genetic Algorithm (NSGAIII). Experimental results have shown that the optimized filter banks provide a significant gain in coding performances when comparing with the Daubechies orthogonal filter banks for test speech signals.

Abstract: International audience; Nanotechnology is revolutionizing human medicine. Nanoparticles (NPs) are currently used for treating various cancers, for developing vaccines, and for imaging, and other promises offered by NPs might come true soon. Due to the interplay between NPs and proteins, there is more and more evidence supporting the role of NPs for treating amyloid-based diseases. NPs can induce some conformational changes of the adsorbed protein molecules via various molecular interactions, leading to inhibition of aggregation and fibrillation of several and different amyloid proteins. Though an in depth understanding of such interactions between NPs and amyloid structures is still lacking, the inhibition of protein aggregation by NPs represents a new generation of innovative and effective medicines to combat metabolic diseases such as type 2 diabetes (T2D). Here, we lay out advances made in the field of T2D notably for optimizing protein aggregation inhibition strategies. This Account covers discussions about the current understanding of β-cells, the insulin producing cells within the pancreas, under diabetic conditions, notably increased glucose and fatty acid levels, and the implication of these conditions on the formation of human islet amyloid polypeptide (hIAPP) amylin oligomers and aggregates. Owing to the great potential of carbon nanostructures to interfere with protein aggregation, an important part of this Account will be devoted to the state of the art of therapeutic options in the form of emerging nanomaterials-based amyloidosis inhibitors. Our group has recently made some substantial progress in this regard by investigating the impact of glucose and fatty acid concentrations on hIAPP aggregation and β-cell toxicity. Furthermore, the great potential of carbon nanocolloids in reversing hIAPP aggregation under diabetic conditions will be highlighted as the approach has been validated on β-cell cultures from rats. We hope that this Account will evoke new ideas and concepts in this regard. We give some lead references below on pancreatic β-cell aspects and carbon quantum dots for managing diabetics and nanomedicine related aspects, a topic of interest in our laboratory.

Abstract: International audience; An approach based on the use of a macromolecular coupling agent and the aim to improve the interfacial adhesion between piezoelectric ceramics and piezoelectric polymer matrix in piezoelectric composites is presented. Poly(methyl methacrylate) (PMMA) bearing a catechol moiety was used as a macromolecular coupling agent, as it is known to be miscible to piezoelectric fluoropolymers and catechol groups can strongly bind to a large variety of surfaces. Thus, entanglement between the PMMA chains and the amorphous segments of the fluoropolymer would ensure the desired interfacial adhesion. Well-defined PMMA was synthesized via RAFT polymerization using 2-cyano-2-propyl dodecyl trithiocarbonate as a chain-transfer agent. The PMMA ω-chain end was then functionalized with a catechol group via a one-pot aminolysis/thia-Michael addition procedure using a dopamine acrylamide (DA) derivative as a Michael acceptor. The presence of the catechol moiety at the chain end of PMMA was controlled by 1H NMR and cyclic voltammetry measurements. The resulting PMMA-DA was then grafted onto the surface of a lead-free piezoelectric ceramic film (i.e., a thin film of H2O2-activated (Bi0.5Na0.5)TiO3 (BNT) with a large contact area). The increase of the water contact angle confirmed the efficiency of the grafting. A commercial piezoelectric copolymer P(VDF-co-TrFE) was then spin-coated onto the modified BNT surface to form a bilayer composite. The composite cross section prepared by cryofracture was examined by scanning electron microscopy and revealed that the ceramic/polymer interface of the BNT-PMMA/P(VDF-co-TrFE) bilayer composite exhibits a much better cohesion than its counterpart composite prepared from nonmodified BNT. Moreover, the grazing incidence wide-angle X-ray scattering confirmed that the copolymer crystal structure was not impacted by the presence of the PMMA-DA coupling agent. A strong piezoelectric response was locally detected by piezoresponse force microscopy. This study highlights the potential of PMMA-DA as a macromolecular coupling agent to improve the ceramic/polymer interface in piezoelectric composite materials.

Abstract: International audience; Makespan minimization in permutation flow-shop scheduling is a well-known hard combinatorial optimization problem. Among the 120 standard benchmark instances proposed by E. Taillard in 1993, 23 have remained unsolved for almost three decades. In this paper, we present our attempts to solve these instances to optimality using parallel Branch-and-Bound (BB) on the GPU-accelerated Jean Zay supercomputer. We report the exact solution of 11 previously unsolved problem instances and improved upper bounds for eight instances. The solution of these problems requires both algorithmic improvements and leveraging the computing power of peta-scale high-performance computing platforms. The challenge consists in efficiently performing parallel depth-first traversal of a highly irregular and fine-grained search tree on distributed systems composed of hundreds of massively parallel accelerator devices and multicore processors. We present and discuss the design and implementation of our permutation-based BB and experimentally evaluate its parallel performance on up to 384 V100 GPUs (2 million CUDA cores) and 3840 CPU cores. The optimality proof for the largest solved instance requires about 64 CPU-years of computation—using 256 GPUs and over 4 million parallel search agents, the traversal of the search tree is completed in 13 hours, exploring 339 × 10$^1$$^2$ nodes.

Abstract: In this paper, we study the problem of learning Graph Neural Networks (GNNs) with Differential Privacy (DP). We propose a novel differentially private GNN based on Aggregation Perturbation (GAP), which adds stochastic noise to the GNN's aggregation function to statistically obfuscate the presence of a single edge (edge-level privacy) or a single node and all its adjacent edges (node-level privacy). Tailored to the specifics of private learning, GAP's new architecture is composed of three separate modules: (i) the encoder module, where we learn private node embeddings without relying on the edge information; (ii) the aggregation module, where we compute noisy aggregated node embeddings based on the graph structure; and (iii) the classification module, where we train a neural network on the private aggregations for node classification without further querying the graph edges. GAP's major advantage over previous approaches is that it can benefit from multi-hop neighborhood aggregations, and guarantees both edge-level and node-level DP not only for training, but also at inference with no additional costs beyond the training's privacy budget. We analyze GAP's formal privacy guarantees using R\'enyi DP and conduct empirical experiments over three real-world graph datasets. We demonstrate that GAP offers significantly better accuracy-privacy trade-offs than state-of-the-art DP-GNN approaches and naive MLP-based baselines. Abstract: International audience; Quasi-vertical gallium nitride (GaN) Schottky diodes on silicon carbide (SiC) substrates were fabricated for frequency multiplier applications. The epitaxial structure employed had an n− layer of 590 nm with doping 6.6 × 1016 cm−3, while the n+ layer was 950 nm thick, with doping 2 × 1019 cm−3. Potassium hydroxide (KOH) chemical surface treatment before Schottky contact metallization was employed to study its effect in improving the diode parameters. The KOH-treated diode demonstrated a breakdown voltage of − 27.5 V, which is the highest reported for this type of diode. Cut-off frequencies around 500 GHz were obtained at high reverse bias (− 25 V) in spite of high series resistance. The result obtained in breakdown voltage value warrants further research in surface treatment and post-annealing of the Schottky contact optimization in order to decrease the series resistance.

Abstract: International audience; The spread of new strains of antibiotic-resistant pathogenic microorganisms has led to the urgent need to discover and develop new antimicrobial systems. The antibacterial effects of fatty acids have been well-known and recognized since the first experiments of Robert Koch in 1881, and they are now used in diverse fields. Fatty acids can prevent the growth and directly kill bacteria by insertion into their membrane. For that, a sufficient amount of fatty acid molecules has to be solubilized in water to transfer from the aqueous phase to the cell membrane. Due to conflicting results in the literature and lack of standardization methods, it is very difficult to draw clear conclusions on the antibacterial effect of fatty acids. Most of the current studies link fatty acids' effectiveness against bacteria to their chemical structure, notably the alkyl chain length and the presence of double bonds in their chain. Furthermore, the solubility of fatty acids and their critical aggregation concentration is not only related to their structure, but also influenced by medium conditions (pH, temperature, ionic strength, etc.). There is a possibility that the antibacterial activity of saturated long chain fatty acids (LCFA) may be underestimated due to the lack of water solubility and the use of unsuitable methods to assess their antibacterial activity. Thus, enhancing the solubility of these long chain saturated fatty acids is the main goal before examining their antibacterial properties. To increase their water solubility and thereby improve their antibacterial efficacy, novel alternatives may be considered, including the use of organic positively charged counter-ions instead of the conventional sodium and potassium soaps, the formation of catanionic systems, the mixture with co-surfactants, and solubilization in emulsion systems. This review summarizes the latest findings on fatty acids as antibacterial agents, with a focus on long chain saturated fatty acids. Additionally, it highlights the different ways to improve their water solubility, which may be a crucial factor in increasing their antibacterial efficacy. We finish with a discussion on the challenges, strategies and opportunities for the formulation of LCFAs as antibacterial agents.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractGold nanoparticles (AuNPs) represent an attractive inorganic matrix for laser desorption/ionization mass spectrometry (LDI-MS) detection of low-molecular-weight analytes; however, their direct use is hindered by severe aggregation. To limit AuNPs aggregation, hexagonal boron nitride nanosheets (h-BNNs) were employed as supports to improve their desorption/ionization efficiency. Thus, Au@BN was synthesized and systematically characterized. It showed low background noise and high sensitivity for LDI-MS of fipronil and its metabolites. Au@BN-assisted LDI-MS was validated using complex samples including blueberry juice, green tea beverage, and fish muscle, achieving low detection limits (0.05–0.20 µg·L−1 for liquid media, 0.82–1.25 ng·g−1 for fish muscle), wide linear ranges (0.2–100 µg·L−1 for liquid media, 3.00–1000 ng·g−1 for fish muscle), high reproducibility (7.55%–13.7%), and satisfactory recoveries (82.62%–109.1%). Furthermore, spatial distributions of analytes in strawberries and zebrafish were successfully imaged. This strategy allows for the quantitative analysis of other small molecules in complex substrates.

Abstract: International audience; AbstractThis paper is concerned with numerical modeling for nondestructive imaging of defects in solids via standing waves excited by a periodic sinewave signal. The stationary solution, purely sinusoidal in an intact sample, contains higher harmonics when damage is present. These harmonics are generated by contact acoustic nonlinearity and form their own standing waves whose intensity maximum usually indicates the position of damage, in a way similar to resonant vibrometry experiments. The key point of the developed numerical tool that describes those wave phenomena is a model of planar damage (crack, delamination) considered here as an inner contact with rough surfaces and friction. The corresponding boundary conditions are given by the previously developed contact model based on the Method of Memory Diagrams (MMD) capable of automating the account for hysteretic frictional effects. Combination of the MMD for boundary conditions and a finite element formulation for waves in a volume (MMD-FEM model) provides a complete description which represents a numerical code applied here for nonlinear standing waves simulations. We present a number of examples obtained for idealized 2D geometry and reveal conditions in which both position and extent of damage are clearly seen as well as cases where only partial detection is possible.

Abstract: International audience; This paper is an overview of the EU-funded project TRUMPET (https://trumpetproject.eu/), and gives an outline of its scope and main technical aspects and objectives. In recent years, Federated Learning has emerged as a revolutionary privacy-enhancing technology. However, further research has cast a shadow of doubt on its strength for privacy protection. The goal of TRUMPET is to research and develop novel privacy enhancement methods for Federated Learning, and to deliver a highly scalable Federated AI service platform for researchers, that will enable AI-powered studies of siloed, multi-site, crossdomain, cross-border European datasets with privacy guarantees that follow the requirements of GDPR. The generic TRUMPET platform will be piloted, demonstrated and validated in the specific use case of European cancer hospitals, allowing researchers and policymakers to extract AI-driven insights from previously inaccessible cross-border, cross-organization cancer data, while ensuring the patients' privacy.

Abstract: International audience; In this paper, we introduce a conformal prediction method to construct prediction sets in a oneshot federated learning setting. More specifically, we define a quantile-of-quantiles estimator and prove that for any distribution, it is possible to output prediction sets with desired coverage in only one round of communication. To mitigate privacy issues, we also describe a locally differentially private version of our estimator. Finally, over a wide range of experiments, we show that our method returns prediction sets with coverage and length very similar to those obtained in a centralized setting. Overall, these results demonstrate that our method is particularly well-suited to perform conformal predictions in a one-shot federated learning setting.

Abstract: International audience; The video game industry is a vast and lucrative sector that generates significant revenue. However, a recurring issue within this industry is the release of games with numerous bugs. The process of debugging, a challenging and expensive undertaking in software development, becomes crucial in rectifying these issues. It is worth noting that such bugs can significantly impact the commercial performance of games in the market. Therefore, an imperative arises to foster further academic research that presents dedicated debugging techniques aimed at enhancing the process specifically within the realm of video game development. In this paper, we employ a systematic mapping study methodology to discern the existing body of knowledge concerning debugging practices for video games. Through a systematic selection process, we selected 21 relevant studies for analysis, enabling the synthesis of data and facilitating the creation of a overview that encapsulates the state of the art on debugging video games. We identified work analyzing challenges of debugging games, proposing bug detection techniques or dedicated debugging tools. However, these work are always bound to specific contexts or kinds of games. Our analysis shows that there is no academic body of knowledge about debugging video games. Thus, this initial exploration not only raises pertinent questions but also presents prospects for conducting empirical and controlled experiments to enhance our understanding of effective debugging strategies within the context of video game development. We complete our analysis with a discussion of testing and debugging techniques, and how they could help and open new research opportunities for the debugging of video games. Abstract: International audience; We consider search spaces associated with neural network channel configuration. Architectures and their accuracy are visualised using low-dimensional Euclidean embedding (LDEE). Optimisation dynamics are captured using local optima networks (LONs). LONs are a compression of a fitness landscape: the nodes are local optima and the edges are search transitions between them. Several neural architecture search algorithms are tested on the search space and we discover that iterated local search (ILS) is a competitive algorithm for neural channel configuration. We additionally implement a landscape-aware ILS which performs well. Observations from the search and landscape space analyses bring visual clarity and insight to the science of neural network channel design: the results indicate that a high number of channels, kept constant throughout the network, is beneficial.

Abstract: We consider statistical randomness in the construction of local optima networks (LONs) and conduct a preliminary and exploratory study into this. LONs capture a fitness landscape into network format: the nodes are local optima, and edges are heuristic search transitions between them. Problem instances from the benchmark quadratic assignment problem library are used in the analysis. LONs are constructed using an iterated local search (ILS) and several different random seeds. Metrics are computed from the networks and visualised to assess the effect of randomness. Algorithm performance models for ILS runtime are built using metrics of LONs constructed using different seeds and the results compared. The results show that some LON metrics seem consistent across seeds, while others vary substantially. Additionally, the quality of algorithm performance models using LON metrics as predictors can differ depending on randomness. Finally, LON metrics associated with separate seeds can lead to different algorithm configuration recommendations for the same instance.

In order to implement our multi-agent strategy which aims at minimising the mean flowtime of jobs, we propose a modular agent architecture that allows the concurrency of negotiation and consumption. Our experiments show that our reallocation strategy, when executed continuously during the consumption process: (1) improves the flowtime; (2) does not penalise the consumption; (3) is robust against execution hazards.

Abstract: International audience; Power analysis has long been used to tell apart different instructions running on the same machine. In this work, we show that it is also possible to use power consumption to tell apart different machines running the same instructions, even if these machines have entirely identical hardware and software configurations, and even if the power consumption measurements are carried out using low-rate software-based methods. We collected an extended dataset of power consumption traces from 291 desktop and server systems, spanning multiple processor generations and vendors (Intel and AMD). After analyzing them, we discovered that profiling the power consumption of individual assembly instructions makes it possible to create a fingerprinting agent that can identify individual machines with high accuracy. Our classifier approaches its peak accuracy after less than 10 instructions, meaning that the fingerprint can take a very short time to capture. We analyzed the stability of the fingerprint over time and discovered that, while it remains relatively stable, it is significantly affected by temperature changes. We also carried out a proof-of-concept evaluation using portable WebAssembly code, showing that our method can still be applied, albeit at a reduced accuracy, without using native instructions for the profiling step. Our method depends on the ability to measure power, which is currently restricted to highprivileged "ring 0" code on modern PCs. This limits the current use of our method to defense-only settings, such as strengthening authentication or anti-counterfeiting. Our tools and datasets are publicly released as an open-source repository. Our work highlights the importance of protecting power consumption measurements from unauthorized access.

Abstract: International audience; Machine learning tools are widely used for knowledge extraction, modeling, and decision tasks; a range of problems that Control Theory also tackles. Their relations have been largely explored by looking at stochastic control and Markov Decision Processes, due to the proximity of their formulations. However, novel links between machine learning and deterministic control are emerging; combining both approaches, e.g. by performing identification with learning, or controlling the training process. The recent flourishing literature is vast: there is a need to identify challenges, trends and opportunities on this interface. This survey contributes i) to the compared analysis of both fields. ii) Based on literature review, a categorization of combinations of learning and control is drawn. In the control framework, learning has been used for modeling, controllers tuning or adaptation, generating a controller or as a controller itself, for translating complex objectives, or checking controlled systems. Conversely, in the learning framework, control is used for tuning hyperparameters, selecting or generating training data, as the training or decision-making algorithm itself or to guarantee learning properties. iii) Finally, discussions on the literature open novel promising combinations to be explored, such as control of neural networks' training process.

The proposed strategy takes into account the design of a family of sliding variables, which establishes a second-order sliding-mode and ensures the convergence of the trajectories of the system to the origin in a finite time and despite the effect of some uncertainties on the system. The straightforward structure of the controller is simple to tune and implement. The global, uniform and finite-time stability of the closed-loop dynamics is demonstrated by means of Lyapunov functions. Abstract: International audience; The methodology of the unit sliding mode control design (known since 1970s) for linear MIMO (Multiply Inputs Multiply Outputs) systems is revised based on the concept of the generalized homogeneity. The conventional restriction about a consistency of the number of control inputs with the dimension of the sliding surface is eliminated. A simple procedure for control parameters tuning is developed. The robustness of the homogeneous unit controller with respect to bounded matched perturbations is proven. Abstract: International audience; This paper contributes to the design of a family of homogeneous controllers to deal with the trajectory tracking problem in unicycle mobile robots (UMRs). The control strategy is based on a cascade control paradigm, which includes the position and orientation tracking error subsystems. The proposed homogeneous controllers provide different types of convergence to zero for the tracking error dynamics, i.e., asymptotic, exponential and finite-time convergence. Simulation results illustrate the performance of the proposed family of homogeneous controllers.

Abstract: International audience; The problem of prescribed-time cooperative state estimation is addressed in this paper. A network of strongly connected (linear homogenous) distributed observers are designed under the assumption that each observer can receive a time-varying scalar signal broadcasted by a supervisor. By a proper parameter tuning, the observer gains go infinity and estimation errors correspondingly reach zeros at the settling time prescribed by users.

Abstract: International audience; Location data are extensively used to provide geo-personalized contents to mobile devices users.Sharing such personal data is a major threat to privacy, with risks of re-identification or inference of sensitive information. Location data broadcasted to services can be sanitized, i.e., by adding noise to spatial coordinates.Such protection mechanisms from the literature are widely generic, e.g., not specific to a user and mobility properties. In this work, we advocate that taking into account the specificities of location data (temporal correlation, human mobility patterns, etc.) enables to gain in the privacy-utility trade-off.Specifically, using future mobility prediction greatly improves privacy. We present a novel protection mechanism, based on model predictive control (MPC). The sanitized location is optimally computed so that it maximizes privacy while guaranteeing a utility loss constraint, for present and future locations. Our formulation explicitly takes into account non-constant sampling time, due to moments when no location data is broadcasted.We evaluate experimentally our control on real mobility dataset and compare to the state of the art.Results show that with knowledge of user's future mobility over a few of minutes, we can gain up to 10% of privacy compared to state of the art, while preserving data utility.
