Abstract: The effect of the stockpiled period on the production and chemical composition of the forage of Marandu grass (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), during the dry season, was evaluated in an experiment conducted in Parnaiba, Piauí. The experimental design was a randomized block design in a factorial 3 x 4, three times stockpiled (March 23, April 19 and May 17) and four utilization times (July 12, August 9, September 6 and October 4) with three replications. The stockpiled in March or April, with pasture utilization in July to October provides greater production of green dry matter, however, the use of stockpiled in May and in July showed better relationship a live material/dead material. The forage with higher leaf/stem ratio, crude protein and ash, and lower levels of neutral detergent fiber and acid detergent fiber were verified with pasture utilization in the months of July and August, regardless of the stockpiled time. Seeking to reconcile yield and chemical composition of the Marandu grass is recommended stockpiled in April or May for pasture use in July or August., O efeito da época de diferimento sobre a produção e composição química da forragem do capim-Marandu (Brachiaria brizantha cv. Marandu), durante a estação seca, foi avaliado em experimento conduzido em Parnaíba, Piauí. O delineamento experimental foi o de blocos casualizados em um esquema fatorial de 3 x 4, sendo três épocas de diferimento (23 de março, 19 de abril e 17 de maio) e quatro épocas de utilização (12 de julho, 9 de agosto, 6 de setembro e 4 de outubro) com três repetições. O diferimento em março ou abril, com utilizações em julho a outubro proporciona maiores produção de matéria seca verde, contudo, o diferimento em maio e utilização em julho apresentou melhor relação material vivo/material morto. A forragem com maiores relação folha/colmo, teores de proteína bruta e cinzas, e menores teores de fibra em detergente neutro e fibra em detergente ácido, foram verificadas com utilizações nos meses de julho e agosto, independentemente da época de diferimento. Visando conciliar rendimento e composição química da forragem do capim-Marandu, recomenda-se o diferimento em abril ou maio para utilização em julho ou agosto.

Abstract: The sensitivity of tropical forest carbon to climate is a key uncertainty in predicting global climate change. Although short-term drying and warming are known to affect forests, it is unknown if such effects translate into long-term responses. Here, we analyze 590 permanent plots measured across the tropics to derive the equilibrium climate controls on forest carbon. Maximum temperature is the most important predictor of aboveground biomass (-9.1 megagrams of carbon per hectare per degree Celsius), primarily by reducing woody productivity, and has a greater impact per °C in the hottest forests (>32.2°C). Our results nevertheless reveal greater thermal resilience than observations of short-term variation imply. No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2019-12-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such “monodominant” forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors. Abstract: Over the past three decades, many small-scale ﬂoristic studies of white-sand forests across the Amazon basin have been published. Nonetheless, a basin-wide description of both taxonomic and phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity at regional scales has never been achieved. We present a complete ﬂoristic analysis of white-sand forests across the Amazon basin including both taxonomic and phyloge- netic diversity. We found strong regional differences in the signal of phylogenetic community structure with both overall and regional Net Relatedness Index and Nearest Taxon Index values found to be signiﬁcantly positive leading to a pattern of phylogenetic clustering. Over the past three decades, many small‐scale floristic studies of white‐sand forests across the Amazon basin have been published. Nonetheless, a basin‐wide description of both taxonomic and phylogenetic alpha and beta diversity at regional scales has never been achieved. We present a complete floristic analysis of white‐sand forests across the Amazon basin including both taxonomic and phylogenetic diversity. We found strong regional differences in the signal of phylogenetic community structure with both overall and regional Net Relatedness Index and Nearest Taxon Index values found to be significantly positive leading to a pattern of phylogenetic clustering. Additionally, we found high taxonomic dissimilarity but low phylogenetic dissimilarity in pairwise community comparisons. These results suggest that recent diversification has played an important role in the assembly of white‐sand forests causing geographic neo‐endemism patterns at the regional scale.

Abstract: Analyses of forest loss and protected areas suggest that 36 to 57% of Amazonian tree flora may qualify as “globally threatened.”, Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. We overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 36% and up to 57% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and we predict that most of the world’s >40,000 tropical tree species now qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if these areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century.

No. of bitstreams: 0 Previous issue date: 2020-12-01 Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate total richness, we confirm that over 15,000 tree species are expected to occur in Amazonia. We also show that using ten times the number of plots would result in an increase to just ~50% of those 15,000 estimated species. To get a more complete sample of all tree species, rigorous field campaigns may be needed but the number of trees in Amazonia will remain an estimate for years to come. Abstract: We describe the geographical variation in tree species composition across Amazonian forests and show how environmental conditions are associated with species turnover. Our analyses are based on 2023 forest inventory plots (1 ha) that provide abundance data for a total of 5188 tree species. Within-plot species composition reflected both local environmental conditions (especially soil nutrients and hydrology) and geographical regions. A broader-scale view of species turnover was obtained by interpolating the relative tree species abundances over Amazonia into 47,441 0.1-degree grid cells. Two main dimensions of spatial change in tree species composition were identified. The first was a gradient between western Amazonia at the Andean forelands (with young geology and relatively nutrient-rich soils) and central-eastern Amazonia associated with the Guiana and Brazilian Shields (with more ancient geology and poor soils). The second gradient was between the wet forests of the northwest and the drier forests in southern Amazonia. Isolines linking cells of similar composition crossed major Amazonian rivers, suggesting that tree species distributions are not limited by rivers. Abstract: Amazonia's floodplain system is the largest and most biodiverse on Earth. Although forests are crucial to the ecological integrity of floodplains, our understanding of their species composition and how this may differ from surrounding forest types is still far too limited, particularly as changing inundation regimes begin to reshape floodplain tree communities and the critical ecosystem functions they underpin. Here we address this gap by taking a spatially explicit look at Amazonia-wide patterns of tree-species turnover and ecological specialization of the region's floodplain forests. We show that the majority of Amazonian tree species can inhabit floodplains, and about a sixth of Amazonian tree diversity is ecologically specialized on floodplains. The degree of specialization in floodplain communities is driven by regional flood patterns, with the most compositionally differentiated floodplain forests located centrally within the fluvial network and contingent on the most extraordinary flood magnitudes regionally. Our results provide a spatially explicit view of ecological specialization of floodplain forest communities and expose the need for whole-basin hydrological integrity to protect the Amazon's tree diversity and its function., (© 2024. Abstract: Trees structure the Earth's most biodiverse ecosystem, tropical forests. The vast number of tree species presents a formidable challenge to understanding these forests, including their response to environmental change, as very little is known about most tropical tree species. A focus on the common species may circumvent this challenge. Here we investigate abundance patterns of common tree species using inventory data on 1,003,805 trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm across 1,568 locations 1-6 in closed-canopy, structurally intact old-growth tropical forests in Africa, Amazonia and Southeast Asia. We estimate that 2.2%, 2.2% and 2.3% of species comprise 50% of the tropical trees in these regions, respectively. Extrapolating across all closed-canopy tropical forests, we estimate that just 1,053 species comprise half of Earth's 800 billion tropical trees with trunk diameters of at least 10 cm. Despite differing biogeographic, climatic and anthropogenic histories 7 , we find notably consistent patterns of common species and species abundance distributions across the continents. This suggests that fundamental mechanisms of tree community assembly may apply to all tropical forests. Resampling analyses show that the most common species are likely to belong to a manageable list of known species, enabling targeted efforts to understand their ecology. Abstract: Using 2.046 botanically-inventoried tree plots across the largest tropical forest on Earth, we mapped tree species-diversity and tree species-richness at 0.1-degree resolution, and investigated drivers for diversity and richness. Using only location, stratified by forest type, as predictor, our spatial model, to the best of our knowledge, provides the most accurate map of tree diversity in Amazonia to date, explaining approximately 70% of the tree diversity and species-richness. Large soil-forest combinations determine a significant percentage of the variation in tree species-richness and tree alpha-diversity in Amazonian forest-plots. We suggest that the size and fragmentation of these systems drive their large-scale diversity patterns and hence local diversity. A model not using location but cumulative water deficit, tree density, and temperature seasonality explains 47% of the tree species-richness in the terra-firme forest in Amazonia. Over large areas across Amazonia, residuals of this relationship are small and poorly spatially structured, suggesting that much of the residual variation may be local. The Guyana Shield area has consistently negative residuals, showing that this area has lower tree species-richness than expected by our models. Abstract: Indigenous societies are known to have occupied the Amazon basin for more than 12,000 years, but the scale of their influence on Amazonian forests remains uncertain. We report the discovery, using LIDAR (light detection and ranging) information from across the basin, of 24 previously undetected pre-Columbian earthworks beneath the forest canopy. Modeled distribution and abundance of large-scale archaeological sites across Amazonia suggest that between 10,272 and 23,648 sites remain to be discovered and that most will be found in the southwest. We also identified 53 domesticated tree species significantly associated with earthwork occurrence probability, likely suggesting past management practices. Closed-canopy forests across Amazonia are likely to contain thousands of undiscovered archaeological sites around which pre-Columbian societies actively modified forests, a discovery that opens opportunities for better understanding the magnitude of ancient human influence on Amazonia and its current state.

Abstract: In a time of rapid global change, the question of what determines patterns in species abundance distribution remains a priority for understanding the complex dynamics of ecosystems. The constrained maximization of information entropy provides a framework for the understanding of such complex systems dynamics by a quantitative analysis of important constraints via predictions using least biased probability distributions. We apply it to over two thousand hectares of Amazonian tree inventories across seven forest types and thirteen functional traits, representing major global axes of plant strategies. Results show that constraints formed by regional relative abundances of genera explain eight times more of local relative abundances than constraints based on directional selection for specific functional traits, although the latter does show clear signals of environmental dependency. These results provide a quantitative insight by inference from large-scale data using cross-disciplinary methods, furthering our understanding of ecological dynamics., (© 2023. The Author(s).)

14. First report of Fusarium kalimantanense causing Fusarium wilt on banana tree in Brazil.

Abstract: Banana (Musa spp.) is the second most-consumed fruit in Brazil, the fourth-largest producer globally, with 7 million tons in 2021 (IBGE 2021). Studies about the morphological and pathogenic characteristics revealed that the etiology of Fusarium wilt in banana cultivars in Brazil had been related to the Fusarium oxysporum f. sp. cubense (Foc) (E.F. Smith) Snyder and Hansen species (Costa et al. 2015; Cordeiro et al. 2016; Araújo et al. 2017). Phylogenetic studies have shown the existence of distinct genetic lineages for Foc, which has come to be called the Fusarium oxysporum Species Complex (FOSC) (O'Donnell et al. 1998; Maryani et al. 2019). Symptoms of Fusarium wilt were observed in banana trees at the headquarters of Embrapa Roraima (02°45'26.89"N and 60°43'52.78"W), Roraima-Brazil, in 2016. Samples were collected and sterilized with 70% ethanol for 30 s, followed by 3% NaClO for 1 min, rinsed three times in sterile distilled water, seeded on potato dextrose agar (PDA), and incubated at 25 °C for three days. Two isolates obtained from a pure culture (LPPC130) were submitted to the morphological characterization by Leslie and Summerell (2006) protocol. The fungal colony showed vinaceous color, progressing to livid red (Rayner 1970), with a mean diameter of 41 mm (± 0.1) at three days of incubation in a PDA culture medium. The fungus produced abundant macroconidia in spezieller nährstoffarmer agar (SNA) culture medium containing clove leaf (CLA) after 14 days of incubation at 25 °C. The sporodochium conidia presented a falcate shape, moderately curved, with 3 to 5 septa and dimensions ranging from 38.8 (48.0) 56.2 x 3.5 (4.4) 6.0 µm (n=50). The conidia of the aerial mycelium presented ovoid to ellipsoid shape, slightly curved, aseptic, measuring 6.0 (12.0) 18.0 x 2.8 (3.3) 5.0 µm (n=50). The genomic DNA of the isolate was extracted (Murray and Thompson 1980), and fragments of the elongation factor 1-α (TEF1) and RNA Polymerase II (RPB2) gene regions were amplified and sequenced in both directions (O'Donnell et al. 1998; O'Donnell et al. 2010) (GenBank accession numbers: Seq1 OL802918 and Seq2 OL802919). Multiple alignments of the combined dataset of the isolates and representative sequences obtained from GenBank were submitted to phylogenetic analysis with 1,000 bootstrap replicates. The micromorphological characteristics together to phylogenetic inference on the TEF1 and RPB2 genes, allowed a robust analysis, generating 42 more parsimonious trees and making it possible to identify the LPPC130 isolate as Fusarium kalimantanense, a species belonging to the F. oxysporum species complex (FOSC), with 100% bootstrap support (Maryani et al. 2019). The pathogenicity of the isolate was evaluated in five micropropagated seedlings of banana cv. Silk 75 days old, grown in pots with 5 kg of sterile formulation of sand and soil, in 1:1. Seedlings were inoculated by wounding the roots and depositing a suspension of conidia and chlamydospores at 105 spores mL-1. The inoculating of the isolate in 35 micropropagated seedlings of banana was based on Koch's postulates. The seedlings were transplanted into plastic bags (2 kg of sterile formulation: sandy soil and substrate, in 2:1) and inoculated with 10 mL of the chlamydospore suspension (107 CFU mL-1) at transplanting, and after 30 days of transplanting. Seedlings treated only with water were used as control. Evaluation of the symptoms of the disease was carried out 90 days after inoculation, and revealed that the isolate (LPPC130) was pathogenic by inducing the same symptoms of Fusarium wilt. F. kalimantanense was first reported associated with the pseudostems of Musa acuminata var. Pisang Ambon, and proved to be non-pathogenic to cv. Gros Michel and the bananas of the Cavendish group (Maryani et al. 2019). In Brazil, this fungus was recently associated with the Fusarium rot on melon fruits (Araújo et al. 2021); however, this is the first report of its pathogenicity in banana trees cv. Silk.

Abstract: Amazonian forests are extraordinarily diverse, but the estimated species richness is very much debated. Here, we apply an ensemble of parametric estimators and a novel technique that includes conspecific spatial aggregation to an extended database of forest plots with up-to-date taxonomy. We show that the species abundance distribution of Amazonia is best approximated by a logseries with aggregated individuals, where aggregation increases with rarity. By averaging several methods to estimate total richness, we confirm that over 15,000 tree species are expected to occur in Amazonia. We also show that using ten times the number of plots would result in an increase to just ~50% of those 15,000 estimated species. To get a more complete sample of all tree species, rigorous field campaigns may be needed but the number of trees in Amazonia will remain an estimate for years to come.

Abstract: Tropical forests are known for their high diversity. Yet, forest patches do occur in the tropics where a single tree species is dominant. Such "monodominant" forests are known from all of the main tropical regions. For Amazonia, we sampled the occurrence of monodominance in a massive, basin-wide database of forest-inventory plots from the Amazon Tree Diversity Network (ATDN). Utilizing a simple defining metric of at least half of the trees ≥ 10 cm diameter belonging to one species, we found only a few occurrences of monodominance in Amazonia, and the phenomenon was not significantly linked to previously hypothesized life history traits such wood density, seed mass, ectomycorrhizal associations, or Rhizobium nodulation. In our analysis, coppicing (the formation of sprouts at the base of the tree or on roots) was the only trait significantly linked to monodominance. While at specific locales coppicing or ectomycorrhizal associations may confer a considerable advantage to a tree species and lead to its monodominance, very few species have these traits. Mining of the ATDN dataset suggests that monodominance is quite rare in Amazonia, and may be linked primarily to edaphic factors.

Abstract: Species distribution models (SDMs) are widely used in ecology and conservation. Presence-only SDMs such as MaxEnt frequently use natural history collections (NHCs) as occurrence data, given their huge numbers and accessibility. NHCs are often spatially biased which may generate inaccuracies in SDMs. Here, we test how the distribution of NHCs and MaxEnt predictions relates to a spatial abundance model, based on a large plot dataset for Amazonian tree species, using inverse distance weighting (IDW). We also propose a new pipeline to deal with inconsistencies in NHCs and to limit the area of occupancy of the species. We found a significant but weak positive relationship between the distribution of NHCs and IDW for 66% of the species. The relationship between SDMs and IDW was also significant but weakly positive for 95% of the species, and sensitivity for both analyses was high. Furthermore, the pipeline removed half of the NHCs records. Presence-only SDM applications should consider this limitation, especially for large biodiversity assessments projects, when they are automatically generated without subsequent checking. Our pipeline provides a conservative estimate of a species' area of occupancy, within an area slightly larger than its extent of occurrence, compatible to e.g. IUCN red list assessments.

Abstract: Myrciaria dubia (camu-camu) is an Amazon tree that produces a tart fruit with high vitamin C content. It is probably the fruit with the highest vitamin C content among all Brazilian fruit crops and it can be used to supplement daily vitamin C dose. This property has attracted the attention of consumers and, consequently, encouraged fruit farmers to produce it. In order to identify and select potential accessions for commercial exploitation and breeding programs, M. dubia has received considerable research attention. The identification and characterization of genetic diversity, as well as identification of the population structure of accessions preserved in germplasm banks are fundamental for the success of any breeding program. The objective of this study was to evaluate the genetic variability of 10 M. dubia populations obtained from the shores of Reis Lake, located in the municipality of Caracaraí, Roraima, Brazil. Fourteen polymorphic inter simple sequence repeat (ISSR) markers were used to study the population genetic diversity, which resulted in 108 identified alleles. Among the 14 primers, GCV, UBC810, and UBC827 produced the highest number of alleles. The study illustrated the suitability and efficiency of ISSR markers to study the genetic diversity of M. dubia accessions. We also revealed the existence of high genetic variability among both accessions and populations that can be exploited in future breeding programs and conservation activities of this species.

Abstract: Estimates of extinction risk for Amazonian plant and animal species are rare and not often incorporated into land-use policy and conservation planning. We overlay spatial distribution models with historical and projected deforestation to show that at least 36% and up to 57% of all Amazonian tree species are likely to qualify as globally threatened under International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List criteria. If confirmed, these results would increase the number of threatened plant species on Earth by 22%. We show that the trends observed in Amazonia apply to trees throughout the tropics, and we predict that most of the world's >40,000 tropical tree species now qualify as globally threatened. A gap analysis suggests that existing Amazonian protected areas and indigenous territories will protect viable populations of most threatened species if these areas suffer no further degradation, highlighting the key roles that protected areas, indigenous peoples, and improved governance can play in preventing large-scale extinctions in the tropics in this century.
