The last century has seen enormous progress in our understanding of the Universe. We know the life cycles of stars, the structure of galaxies, the remnants of the big bang, and have a general understanding of how the Universe evolved. We have come remarkably far using electromagnetic radiation as our tool for observing the Universe. However, gravity is the engine behind many of the processes in the Universe, and much of its action is dark. Opening a gravitational window on the Universe will let us go further than any alternative. Gravity has its own messenger: Gravitational waves, ripples in the fabric of spacetime. They travel essentially undisturbed and let us peer deep into the formation of the first seed black holes, exploring redshifts as large as z ~ 20, prior to the epoch of cosmic re-ionisation. Exquisite and unprecedented measurements of black hole masses and spins will make it possible to trace the history of black holes across all stages of galaxy evolution, and at the same time constrain any deviation from the Kerr metric of General Relativity. eLISA will be the first ever mission to study the entire Universe with gravitational waves. eLISA is an all-sky monitor and will offer a wide view of a dynamic cosmos using gravitational waves as new and unique messengers to unveil The Gravitational Universe. We propose an under-ground experiment to detect the general relativistic effects due to the curvature of space-time around the Earth (de Sitter effect) and to rotation of the planet (dragging of the inertial frames or Lense-Thirring effect). It is based on the comparison between the IERS value of the Earth rotation vector and corresponding measurements obtained by a tri-axial laser detector of rotation. The proposed detector consists of six large ring-lasers arranged along three orthogonal axes. In about two years of data taking, the 1% sensitivity required for the measurement of the Lense-Thirring drag can be reached with square rings of 6 $m$ side, assuming a shot noise limited sensitivity ($ 20 prad/s/\sqrt{Hz}$). The multi-gyros system, composed of rings whose planes are perpendicular to one or the other of three orthogonal axes, can be built in several ways. Here, we consider cubic and octahedron structures. The symmetries of the proposed configurations provide mathematical relations that can be used to study the stability of the scale factors, the relative orientations or the ring-laser planes, very important to get rid of systematics in long-term measurements, which are required in order to determine the relativistic effects., Comment: 24 pages, 26 Postscript figures

We calculate the effect of the Earth-Moon (EM) system on the free-fall motion of LISA test masses. We show that the periodic gravitational pulling of the EM system induces a resonance with fundamental frequency 1 yr^-1 and a series of periodic perturbations with frequencies equal to integer harmonics of the synodic month (9.92 10^-7 Hz). We then evaluate the effects of these perturbations (up to the 6th harmonics) on the relative motions between each test masses couple, finding that they range between 3mm and 10pm for the 2nd and 6th harmonic, respectively. If we take the LISA sensitivity curve, as extrapolated down to 10^-6 Hz, we obtain that a few harmonics of the EM system can be detected in the Doppler data collected by the LISA space mission. This suggests that the EM system gravitational near field could provide an absolute calibration for the LISA sensitivity at very low frequencies., Comment: 15 pages, 5 figures

We present here the results of a 515 days long run of the IGEC2 observatory, consisting of the four resonant mass detectors ALLEGRO, AURIGA, EXPLORER and NAUTILUS. The reported results are related to the fourfold observation time from Nov. 6 2005 until Apr. 14 2007, when Allegro ceased its operation. This period overlapped with the first long term observations performed by the LIGO interferometric detectors. The IGEC observations aim at the identification of gravitational wave candidates with high confidence, keeping the false alarm rate at the level of 1 per century, and high duty cycle, namely 57% with all four sites and 94% with at least three sites in simultaneous observation. The network data analysis is based on time coincidence searches over at least three detectors: the four 3-fold searches and the 4-fold one are combined in a logical OR. We exchanged data with the usual blind procedure, by applying a unique confidential time offset to the events in each set of data. The accidental background was investigated by performing sets of 10^8 coincidence analyses per each detector configuration on off-source data, obtained by shifting the time series of each detector. The thresholds of the five searches were tuned so as to control the overall false alarm rate to 1/century. When the confidential time shifts was disclosed, no gravitational wave candidate was found in the on-source data. As an additional output of this search, we make available to other observatories the list of triple coincidence found below search thresholds, corresponding to a false alarm rate of 1/month., Comment: 10 pages, 8 figures Accepted for publication on Phys. We analyze heat and work fluctuations in the gravitational wave detector AURIGA, modeled as a macroscopic electromechanical oscillator in contact with a thermostat and cooled by an active feedback system. The oscillator is driven to a steady state by the feedback cooling, equivalent to a viscous force. The experimentally measured fluctuations are in agreement with our theoretical analysis based on a stochastically driven Langevin system. The asymmetry of the fluctuations of the absorbed heat characterizes the oscillator's nonequilibrium steady state and reveals the extent to which a feedback cooled system departs from equilibrium in a statistical mechanics perspective., Comment: to be published in Phys. The drag-free satellites of LISA will maintain the test masses in geodesic motion over many years with residual accelerations at unprecedented small levels and time delay interferometry (TDI) will keep track of their differential positions at level of picometers. This may allow investigations of fine details of the gravitational field in the Solar System previously inaccessible. In this spirit, we present the concept of a method to measure directly the gravitational effect of the density of diffuse Local Dark Matter (LDM) with a constellation of a few drag-free satellites, by exploiting how peculiarly it would affect their relative motion. Using as test bed an idealized LISA with rigid arms, we find that the separation in time between the test masses is uniquely perturbed by the LDM, so that they acquire a differential breathing mode. Such a LDM signal is related to the LDM density within the orbits and has characteristic spectral components, with amplitudes increasing in time, at various frequencies of the dynamics of the constellation. We apply a feedback cooling technique to simultaneously cool the three electromechanical normal modes of the ton-scale resonant-bar gravitational wave detector AURIGA. The measuring system is based on a dc Superconducting Quantum Interference Device (SQUID) amplifier, and the feedback cooling is applied electronically to the input circuit of the SQUID. Starting from a bath temperature of 4.2 K, we achieve a minimum temperature of 0.17 mK for the coolest normal mode. The same technique, implemented in a dedicated experiment at subkelvin bath temperature and with a quantum limited SQUID, could allow to approach the quantum ground state of a kilogram-scale mechanical resonator., Comment: 4 pages, 4 figures

At the time when the giant flare of SGR1806-20 occurred, the AURIGA "bar" gw detector was on the air with a noise performance close to stationary gaussian. This allows to set relevant upper limits, at a number of frequencies in the vicinities of 900 Hz, on the amplitude of the damped gw wave trains, which, according to current models, could have been emitted, due to the excitation of normal modes of the star associated with the peak in X-rays luminosity., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

We have implemented a novel scheme of signal readout for resonant gravitational wave detectors. For the first time, a capacitive resonant transducer has been matched to the signal amplifier by means of a tuned high Q electrical resonator. The resulting 3-mode detection scheme widens significantly the bandwidth of the detector. We present here the results achieved by this signal readout equipped with a two-stage SQUID amplifier. Once installed on the AURIGA detector, the one-sided spectral sensitivity obtained with the detector operated at 4.5 K is better than 10^-20 Hz^-1/2 over 110 Hz and in good agreement with the expectations., Comment: 17 pages, 4 figures

We present the concept of selective readout for broadband resonant mass gravitational wave detectors. This detection scheme is capable of specifically selecting the signal from the contributions of the vibrational modes sensitive to the gravitational waves, and efficiently rejecting the contribution from non gravitationally sensitive modes. Moreover this readout, applied to a dual detector, is capable to give an effective reduction of the back-action noise within the frequency band of interest. The overall effect is a significant enhancement in the predicted sensitivity, evaluated at the standard quantum limit for a dual torus detector. A molybdenum detector, 1 m in diameter and equipped with a wide area selective readout, would reach spectral strain sensitivities 2x10^{-23}/sqrt{Hz} between 2-6 kHz., Comment: 9 pages, 4 figures

We study the sensitivity limits of a broadband gravitational-waves detector based on dual resonators such as nested spheres. We determine both the thermal and back-action noises when the resonators displacements are read-out with an optomechanical sensor. We analyze the contributions of all mechanical modes, using a new method to deal with the force-displacement transfer functions in the intermediate frequency domain between the two gravitational-waves sensitive modes associated with each resonator. This method gives an accurate estimate of the mechanical response, together with an evaluation of the estimate error. We show that very high sensitivities can be reached on a wide frequency band for realistic parameters in the case of a dual-sphere detector., Comment: 10 pages, 7 figures

We present the full implementation of a room-temperature gravitational wave bar detector equipped with an opto-mechanical readout. The mechanical vibrations are read by a Fabry--Perot interferometer whose length changes are compared with a stable reference optical cavity by means of a resonant laser. The detector performance is completely characterized in terms of spectral sensitivity and statistical properties of the fluctuations in the system output signal. The new kind of readout technique allows for wide-band detection sensitivity and we can accurately test the model of the coupled oscillators for thermal noise. Our results are very promising in view of cryogenic operation and represent an important step towards significant improvements in the performance of massive gravitational wave detectors., Comment: 7 figures, submitted to Phys. We report the experimental observation of the photothermal effect. The measurements are performed by modulating the laser power absorbed by the mirrors of two high-finesse Fabry-Perot cavities. The results are very well described by a recently proposed theoretical model [M. Cerdonio, L. Conti, A. Heidmann and M. Pinard, Phys. Rev. D 63 (2001) 082003], confirming the correctness of such calculations. The cosmological origin of $\gamma$-ray bursts (GRBs) is now commonly accepted and, according to several models for the central engine, GRB sources should also emit at the same time gravitational waves bursts (GWBs). We have performed two correlation searches between the data of the resonant gravitational wave detector AURIGA and GRB arrival times collected in the BATSE 4B catalog. No correlation was found and an upper limit \bbox{$h_{\text{RMS}} \leq 1.5 \times 10^{-18}$} on the averaged amplitude of gravitational waves associated with $\gamma$-ray bursts has been set for the first time., Comment: 7 pages, 3 figures, submitted to Phys. We present the concept of a sensitive AND broadband resonant mass gravitational wave detector. A massive sphere is suspended inside a second hollow one. Short, high-finesse Fabry-Perot optical cavities read out the differential displacements of the two spheres as their quadrupole modes are excited. At cryogenic temperatures one approaches the Standard Quantum Limit for broadband operation with reasonable choices for the cavity finesses and the intracavity light power. A molybdenum detector of overall size of 2 m, would reach spectral strain sensitivities of 2x10^-23/Sqrt{Hz} between 1000 Hz and 3000 Hz., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures. Changed content. The displacement fluctuations of mirrors in optomechanical devices, induced via thermal expansion by temperature fluctuations due either to thermodynamic fluctuations or to fluctuations in the photon absorption, can be made smaller than quantum fluctuations, at the low temperatures, high reflectivities and high light powers needed to readout displacements at the standard quantum limit. The result is relevant for the design of quantum limited gravitational-wave detectors, both "interferometers" and "bars", and for experiments to study directly mechanical motion in the quantum regime., Comment: 9 pages, 2 figures

The International Gravitational Event Collaboration, IGEC, is a coordinated effort by research groups operating gravitational wave detectors working towards the detection of millisecond bursts of gravitational waves. Here we report on the current IGEC resonant bar observatory, its data analysis procedures, the main properties of the first exchanged data set. Even though the available data set is not complete, in the years 1997 and 1998 up to four detectors were operating simultaneously. We have implemented likelihood testing of the performance of an optimal filter within the online analysis of AURIGA, a sub-Kelvin resonant-bar gravitational wave detector. We demonstrate the effectiveness of this technique in discriminating between impulsive mechanical excitations of the resonant-bar and other spurious excitations. This technique also ensures the accuracy of the estimated parameters such as the signal-to-noise ratio. The efficiency of the technique to deal with non-stationary noise and its application to data from a network of detectors are also discussed., Comment: 20 pages, 7 figures

In this paper we discuss how the standard optimal Wiener filter theory can be applied, within a linear approximation, to the detection of an isotropic stochastic gravitational-wave background with two or more detectors. We apply then the method to the AURIGA-NAUTILUS pair of ultra low temperature bar detectors, near to operate in coincidence in Italy, obtaining an estimate for the sensitivity to the background spectral density of $\simeq 10^{-49}\ Hz^{-1}$, that converts to an energy density per unit logarithmic frequency of $\simeq 8\times10^{-5}\times\rho_c$ with $\rho_c\simeq1.9 \times 10^{-26}\ kg/m^3$ the closure density of the Universe. We also show that by adding the VIRGO interferometric detector under construction in Italy to the array, and by properly re- orienting the detectors, one can reach a sensitivity of $\simeq 6 \times10^{-5}\times\rho_c$. We then calculate that the pair formed by VIRGO and one large mass spherical detector properly located in one of the nearby available sites in Italy can reah a sensitivity of $\simeq 2\times10^{-5}\times \rho_c$ while a pair of such spherical detectors at the same sites of AURIGA and NAUTILUS can achieve sensitivities of $\simeq 2 \times10^{-6}\rho_c$., Comment: 32 pages, postscript file, also available at http://axln01.lnl.infn.it/reports/stoch.html
