Although 1999 may present problems for the computer industry, the long term future looks positive. Economic conditions in Asia, Latin America, and Europe, as well as the Year 2000 problem, may affect sales growth during 1999. However, looking farther into the future, companies will increasingly need to automate their operations in order to service their customers. The use of the Internet to conduct business transactions will necessitate the need for additonal database products and applications.

The computer software and services industries had a good year in 1998 as many of the potential problems stemming from international economic turmoil were unfounded, but prospects for 1999 are less optimistic. However, electronic commerce and outsourcing, along with decent GDP growth for the next three to five years auger well for these industries in the long term. Several stocks in this segment are expected to putprform the market both for the short term and the next three to five years.

The year 2000 computer transition problem could be not only expensive for computer service and software companies, but the way that dates are coded for computers could also bring many businesses to a halt. The expenses for conversion could be over $100 bil in the US alone. However, the business need for technology gives this industry bright prospects. Many of these stocks have superior potential for the next three-to-five year period.

The forecast for the computer software industry in 1997 is mixed as the saturation of small business and home computer markets, slower mainframe sales and desktop upgrading may slow software sales. Good sales and earnings are expected for the computer services and software industries, not only in 1996, but through the end of the 1990s as well. Growth is expected to be rapid for software companies as other industries seek applications systems for greater efficiency. Outsourcing will increase growth for computer service companies as well. These stocks are ranked to outperform the market in 1996 and for 1998-2000.

Current US economic conditions are good for business and consumer investment in computer hardware and software. Revenue and earnings for computer service and software companies have been good for four years and posted gains for the first three quarters of 1995. This will continue in 1996 and through the years 1998-2000. Markets in the former Soviet Union and Asia will increase. Several of these stocks will outperform the market in 1996.

For example, Computer Associates International Inc plans to buy ASK Group Inc, and Novell Inc agreed to acquire WordPerfect Corp and also the spreadsheet line from Borland International Inc. Many companies are doing very well because lower computer prices are spurring demand for software. Many software and computer service company stocks are good buys and can be expected to perform better than the market.

The computer services and software industry will do well in 1994 and throughout the rest of the decade. Demand for word processing, database management systems and electronic spreadsheets is expected to continue to grow. New services in the media and home market are also expected to grow. Many firms that have found their niche in specific service markets, such as payroll processing, will increase their business opportunities.

Adventurous investors willing to risk volatile equity will find an excellent array of computer software industry investment choices, including both short- and long-term stocks. This group is expected to be among the top quarter industries for price performance. Oracle and Computer Assoc are well positioned for long-term growth because they are helping to supply personal computer networks to the growing numbers of operations that are downsizing. In 1993, the industry will probably announce record sales and profits.
