10. RADIUS: A System for Detecting Anomalous Link Quality Degradation in Wireless Sensor Networks

Abstract

To ensure proper functioning of a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN), it is crucial that the network is able to detect anomalies in communication quality (e.g., RSSI), which may cause performance degradation, so that the network can react accordingly. In this paper, we introduce RADIUS, a lightweight system for the purpose. The design of RADIUS is aimed at minimizing the detection error (caused by normal randomness of RSSI) in discriminating good links from weak links and at reaching high detection accuracy under diverse link conditions and dynamic environment changes. Central to the design is a threshold-based decision approach that has its foundation on the Bayes decision theory. In RADIUS, various techniques are developed to address challenges inherent in applying this approach. In addition, through extensive experiments, proper configuration of the parameters involved in these techniques is identified for an indoor environment. In a prototype implementation of the RADIUS system deployed in an indoor testbed, the results show that RADIUS is accurate in detecting anomalous link quality degradation for all links across the network, maintaining a stable error rate of 6.13% on average.

Abstract

Low-power wireless networks, especially in outside deployments, are exposed to a wide range of temperatures. The detrimental effect of high temperatures on communication quality is well known. To investigate these influences under controlled conditions, we present HotBox, a solution with the following properties: (1) It allows exposition of sensor motes to a wide range of temperatures with a high degree of accuracy. (2) It supports specifying exact spatial orientation of motes which, if not ensured, interferes with repeatable experiment setups. (3) It is reasonably easy to assemble by following the information (code, PCB schematics, hardware list and crafting instructions) available online, facilitating further use of the platforms by other researchers. After presenting HotBox, we will show its performance and prove its feasibility as evaluation platform by conducting several experiments. Abstract

In this paper, we propose an approach for assigning an interest level to the goals of a planetary rover. Assigning an interest level to goals, allows the rover autonomously to transform and reallocate the goals. The interest level is defined by data-fusing payload and navigation information. The fusion yields an "interest map", that quantifies the level of interest of each area around the rover. In this way the planner can choose the most interesting scientific objectives to be analyzed, with limited human intervention, and reallocates its goals autonomously. The Dezert-Smarandache Theory of Plausible and Paradoxical Reasoning was used for information fusion: this theory allows dealing with vague and conflicting data. In particular, it allows us directly to model the behavior of the scientists that have to evaluate the relevance of a particular set of goals. Abstract

Given a set of celestial bodies, the problem of finding an optimal sequence of swing-bys, deep space manoeuvres (DSM) and transfer arcs connecting the elements of the set is combinatorial in nature. The number of possible paths grows exponentially with the number of celestial bodies. Therefore, the design of an optimal multiple gravity assist (MGA) trajectory is a NP-hard mixed combinatorial-continuous problem. Its automated solution would greatly improve the design of future space missions, allowing the assessment of a large number of alternative mission options in a short time. This work proposes to formulate the complete automated design of a multiple gravity assist trajectory as an autonomous planning and scheduling problem. The resulting scheduled plan will provide the optimal planetary sequence and a good estimation of the set of associated optimal trajectories. The trajectory model consists of a sequence of celestial bodies connected by twodimensional transfer arcs containing one DSM. For each transfer arc, the position of the planet and the spacecraft, at the time of arrival, are matched by varying the pericentre of the preceding swing-by, or the magnitude of the launch excess velocity, for the first arc. For each departure date, this model generates a full tree of possible transfers from the departure to the destination planet. Each leaf of the tree represents a planetary encounter and a possible way to reach that planet. An algorithm inspired by Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is devised to explore the space of possible plans. The ants explore the tree from departure to destination adding one node at the time: every time an ant is at a node, a probability function is used to select a feasible direction. This approach to automatic trajectory planning is applied to the design of optimal transfers to Saturn and among the Galilean moons of Jupiter.

Abstract

The Jovian moons have been visited by several flyby missions and are attracting more attention for long-term observation. However, because of Jupiter's gravitational perturbations and the J2 and C2,2 terms of the Jovian moons, orbits around these moons are unstable, especially those orbits with high inclinations. This study considers a scenario in which the spacecraft flies at a high altitude equipped with a payload having a small field-of-view angle. The coverage rate is achieved by numerical integration, and the largest coverage rate can be found using the particle swarm optimization method. The results highlight the possibility of obtaining a greater coverage rate, as well as considerable imaging resolution and mission duration by choosing suitable candidate orbits. A station-keeping algorithm is introduced to produce a more accurate estimation of gravitational models that is indexed using the station-keeping cost and estimation accuracy. Based on the five aspects mentioned above, a systematic evaluation of candidate orbits was created for orbit design. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

41. Global optimisation of multiple gravity assist trajectories

Abstract

Multiple gravity assist (MGA) trajectories represent a particular class of space trajectories in which a spacecraft exploits the encounter with one or more celestial bodies to change its velocity vector; they have been essential to reach high Delta-v targets with low propellant consumption. The search for optimal transfer trajectories can be formulated as a mixed combinatorial-continuous global optimisation problem; however, it is known that the problem is difficult to solve, especially if deep space manoeuvres (DSM) are considered. This thesis addresses the automatic design of MGA trajectories through global search techniques, in answer to the requirements of having a large number of mission options in a short time, during the preliminary design phase. Two different approaches are presented. The first is a two-level approach: a number of feasible planetary sequences are initially generated; then, for each one, families of the MGA trajectories are built incrementally. The whole transfer is decomposed into sub-problems of smaller dimension and complexity, and the trajectory is progressively composed by solving one problem after the other. At each incremental step, a stochastic search identifies sets of feasible solutions: this region is preserved, while the rest of the search space is pruned out. The process iterates by adding one planet-to-planet leg at a time and pruning the unfeasible portion of the solution space. Therefore, when another leg is added to the trajectory, only the feasible set for the previous leg is considered and the search space is reduced. It is shown, through comparative tests, how the proposed incremental search performs an effective pruning of the search space, providing families of optimal solutions with a lower computational cost than a non-incremental approach. Known deterministic and stochastic methods are used for the comparison. The algorithm is applied to real MGA case studies, including the ESA missions BepiColombo and Laplace. The second approach performs an integrated search for the planetary sequence and the associated trajectories. The complete design of an MGA trajectory is formulated as an autonomous planning and scheduling problem. The resulting scheduled plan provides the planetary sequence for a MGA trajectory and a good estimation of the optimality of the associated trajectories. For each departure date, a full tree of possible transfers from departure to destination is generated. An algorithm inspired by Ant Colony Optimization (ACO) is devised to explore the space of possible plans. The ants explore the tree from departure to destination, adding one node at a time, using a probability function to select one of the feasible directions. Unlike standard ACO, a taboo-based heuristics prevents ants from re-exploring the same solutions. This approach is applied to the design of optimal transfers to Saturn (inspired by Cassini) and to Mercury, and it demonstrated to be very competitive against known traditional stochastic population-based techniques.
