This study employs Bayesian analysis and machine learning techniques to analyze the young open cluster NGC 6383 using data from Gaia DR3 and 2MASS. We identified 254 probable cluster members through HDBSCAN based on proper motions and determined the cluster's core and tidal radius. To perform this analysis, we utilized an extension of Hamiltonian Monte Carlo, the No-U-Turn Sampler, using the Bayesian library PyMC. Our results indicate a mean cluster age of $4 \pm 1$ Myr and a distance of $1.107 \pm 0.035$ kpc. The analysis reveals mass segregation, especially among binary stars, and suggests that NGC 6383 is not fully relaxed. We observed a well-defined main sequence and a population of pre-main sequence stars, with a star formation range from $\sim 1$ to $6$ Myr, indicating recent star formation activity., Comment: 14 pages, 18 figures. We present an analysis of the galaxy stellar mass function (SMF) of 14 known protoclusters between $2.0 < z < 2.5$ in the COSMOS field, down to a mass limit of $10^{9.5}$ M$_{\odot}$. We use existing photometric redshifts with a statistical background subtraction, and consider star-forming and quiescent galaxies identified from $(NUV - r)$ and $(r - J)$ colours separately. Our fiducial sample includes galaxies within 1 Mpc of the cluster centres. The shape of the protocluster SMF of star-forming galaxies is indistinguishable from that of the general field at this redshift. Quiescent galaxies, however, show a flatter SMF than in the field, with an upturn at low mass, though this is only significant at $\sim 2\sigma$. There is no strong evidence for a dominant population of quiescent galaxies at any mass, with a fraction of $< 15\%$ at $1\sigma$ confidence for galaxies with log$M_{\ast}/M_{\odot} < 10.5$. We compare our results with a sample of galaxies groups at $1 < z < 1.5$, and demonstrate that a significant amount of environmental quenching must take place between these epochs, increasing the relative abundance of high-mass ($\rm M > 10^{10.5} M_{\odot}$) quiescent galaxies by a factor of $\gtrsim$ 2. We develop new tools for continuum and spectral stacking of ALMA data, and apply these to the ALMA Lensing Cluster Survey (ALCS). We derive average dust masses, gas masses and star formation rates (SFR) from the stacked observed 260~GHz continuum of 3402 individually undetected star-forming galaxies, of which 1450 are cluster galaxies and 1952 field galaxies, over three redshift and stellar mass bins (over $z = 0$-1.6 and log $M_{*} [M_{\odot}] = 8$-11.7), and derive the average molecular gas content by stacking the emission line spectra in a SFR-selected subsample. The average SFRs and specific SFRs of both cluster and field galaxies are lower than those expected for Main Sequence (MS) star-forming galaxies, and only galaxies with stellar mass of log $M_{*} [M_{\odot}] = 9.35$-10.6 show dust and gas fractions comparable to those in the MS. The ALMA-traced average `highly obscured' SFRs are typically lower than the SFRs observed from optical to near-IR spectral analysis. Cluster and field galaxies show similar trends in their contents of dust and gas, even when field galaxies were brighter in the stacked maps. From spectral stacking we find a potential CO ($J=4\to3$) line emission (SNR $\sim4$) when stacking cluster and field galaxies with the highest SFRs., Comment: 13 pages, 8 figures, 1 table (+4 pages, 4 figures in Appendix). Protoclusters are the densest regions in the distant universe ($z>2$) and are the progenitors of massive galaxy clusters ($M_{halo}>10^{14}{\rm M}_\odot$) in the local universe. They undoubtedly play a key role in early massive galaxy evolution and they may host the earliest sites of galaxy quenching or even induce extreme states of star formation. Studying protoclusters therefore not only gives us a window into distant galaxy formation but also provides an important link in our understanding of how dense structures grow over time and modify the galaxies within them. Current protocluster samples are completely unable to address these points because they are small and selected in a heterogeneous way. We propose the Roman-Cosmic Noon survey, whose centerpiece is an extremely deep (30ksec) and wide area (10 deg$^2$) prism slitless spectroscopy survey to identify the full range of galaxy structures at $210^{10.5} {\rm M}_\odot$ across the full range of star formation histories as well as many more lower mass star-forming galaxies. The survey will also contain field galaxies to much lower masses than in the High Latitude Wide Area Survey, but over an area dwarfing any current or planned deep spectroscopy probe at $z>2$. With the prism spectroscopy and some modest additional imaging this survey will measure precise stellar mass functions, quenched fractions, galaxy and protocluster morphologies, stellar ages, emission-line based SFRs, and metallicities. In this paper we present CALSAGOS: Clustering ALgorithmS Applied to Galaxies in Overdense Systems which is a PYTHON package developed to select cluster members and to search, find, and identify substructures. CALSAGOS is based on clustering algorithms and was developed to be used in spectroscopic and photometric samples. To test the performance of CALSAGOS we use the S-PLUS's mock catalogues and we found an error of 1\% - 6\% on member selection depending on the function that is used. Besides, CALSAGOS has a $F_1$-score of 0.8, a precision of 85\% and a completeness of 100\% in the identification of substructures in the outer regions of galaxy clusters ($r > r_{200}$). The $F_1$-score, precision and completeness of CALSAGOS fall to 0.5, 75\% and 40\% when we consider all substructure identifications (inner and outer) due to the function that searches, finds, and identifies the substructures works in 2D and cannot resolve the substructures projected over others., Comment: 13 pages, 6 figures

Recent observations have shown that the environmental quenching of galaxies at z ~ 1 is qualitatively different to that in the local Universe. However, the physical origin of these differences has not yet been elucidated. In addition, while low-redshift comparisons between observed environmental trends and the predictions of cosmological hydrodynamical simulations are now routine, there have been relatively few comparisons at higher redshifts to date. Here we confront three state-of-the-art suites of simulations (BAHAMAS+MACSIS, EAGLE+Hydrangea, IllustrisTNG) with state-of-the-art observations of the field and cluster environments from the COSMOS/UltraVISTA and GOGREEN surveys, respectively, at z ~ 1 to assess the realism of the simulations and gain insight into the evolution of environmental quenching. We show that while the simulations generally reproduce the stellar content and the stellar mass functions of quiescent and star-forming galaxies in the field, all the simulations struggle to capture the observed quenching of satellites in the cluster environment, in that they are overly efficient at quenching low-mass satellites. Furthermore, two of the suites do not sufficiently quench the highest-mass galaxies in clusters, perhaps a result of insufficient feedback from AGN. The origin of the discrepancy at low stellar masses (Mstar <~ 1E10 Msun), which is present in all the simulations in spite of large differences in resolution, feedback implementations, and hydrodynamical solvers, is unclear. We model satellite quenching at $z \sim 1$ by combining $14$ massive ($10^{13.8} < M_{\mathrm{halo}}/\mathrm{M}_{\odot} < 10^{15}$) clusters at $0.8 < z < 1.3$ from the GOGREEN and GCLASS surveys with accretion histories of $56$ redshift-matched analogs from the IllustrisTNG simulation. Our fiducial model, which is parameterized by the satellite quenching timescale ($\tau_{\rm quench}$), accounts for quenching in our simulated satellite population both at the time of infall by using the observed coeval field quenched fraction and after infall by tuning $\tau_{\rm quench}$ to reproduce the observed satellite quenched fraction versus stellar mass trend. This model successfully reproduces the observed satellite quenched fraction as a function of stellar mass (by construction), projected cluster-centric radius, and redshift and is consistent with the observed field and cluster stellar mass functions at $z \sim 1$. We find that the satellite quenching timescale is mass dependent, in conflict with some previous studies at low and intermediate redshift. Over the stellar mass range probed ($M_{\star}> 10^{10}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$), we find that the satellite quenching timescale decreases with increasing satellite stellar mass from $\sim1.6~{\rm Gyr}$ at $10^{10}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ to $\sim 0.6 - 1~{\rm Gyr}$ at $10^{11}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$ and is roughly consistent with the total cold gas (H{\scriptsize I}+H$_{2}$) depletion timescales at intermediate $z$, suggesting that starvation may be the dominant driver of environmental quenching at $z < 2$. Finally, while environmental mechanisms are relatively efficient at quenching massive satellites, we find that the majority ($\sim65-80\%$) of ultra-massive satellites ($M_{\star} > 10^{11}~\mathrm{M}_{\odot}$) are quenched prior to infall., Comment: Key Figures: 4, 6 and 9; 16 pages; 11 figures; accepted for publication in MNRAS 26 July 2022

We study the star-formation activity in a sample of $\sim$ 56,000 brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) at $0.05 < z < 0.42$ using optical and infra-red data from SDSS and WISE. We estimate stellar masses and star-formation rates (SFR) through SED fitting and study the evolution of the SFR with redshift as well as the effects of BCG stellar mass, cluster halo mass and cooling time on star formation. Our BCGs have $SFR = 1.4\times10^{-3}-275.2$ [$\rm M_{\odot}$/yr] and $sSFR=5 \times 10^{-15}-6 \times 10^{-10}$ [yr$^{-1}$] . We find that star-forming BCGs are more abundant at higher redshifts and have higher $SFR$ than at lower redshifts. The fraction of star-forming BCGs ($f_{\rm SF}$) varies from 30% to 80% at $0.05 < z < 0.42$. Despite the large values of $f_{\rm SF}$, we show that only 13% of the BCGs lie on the star-forming main sequence for field galaxies at the same redshifts. We also find that $f_{\rm SF}$ depends only weakly on $\rm M_{200}$, while it sharply decreases with $\rm M_{*}$. We finally find that the $SFR$ in BCGs decreases with increasing $\rm t_{cool}$, suggesting that star formation is related to the cooling of the intra-cluster medium. However, we also find a weak correlation of $\rm M_{*}$ and $\rm M_{200}$ with $\rm t_{cool}$, suggesting that AGN are heating the intra-cluster gas around the BCGs. We compare our estimates of $SFR$ with the predictions from empirical models for the evolution of the $SFR$ with redshift, finding that the transition from a merger dominated to a cooling-dominated star formation may happen at $z < 0.6$., Comment: 19 pages, 11 figures. 11 tables

We measure the rate of environmentally-driven star formation quenching in galaxies at $z\sim 1$, using eleven massive ($M\approx 2\times10^{14}\,\mathrm{M}_\odot$) galaxy clusters spanning a redshift range $1.010.5$) we do not find any significant excess of transition galaxies in clusters, relative to a comparison field sample at the same redshift. It is likely that such galaxies were quenched prior to their accretion in the cluster, in group, filament or protocluster environments. For lower stellar mass galaxies ($9.5<\log{M/\mathrm{M}_\odot}<10.5$) there is a small but significant excess of transition galaxies in clusters, accounting for an additional $\sim 5-10$ per cent of the population compared with the field. We show that our data are consistent with a scenario in which 20--30 per cent of low-mass, star-forming galaxies in clusters are environmentally quenched every Gyr, and that this rate slowly declines from $z=1$ to $z=0$. While environmental quenching of these galaxies may include a long delay time during which star formation declines slowly, in most cases this must end with a rapid ($\tau<1$ Gyr) decline in star formation rate., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS Sept 6, 2021

We present results on the measured shapes of 832 galaxies in 11 galaxy clusters at 1.0 < z <1.4 from the GOGREEN survey. We measure the axis ratio ($q$), the ratio of the minor to the major axis, of the cluster galaxies from near-infrared Hubble Space Telescope imaging using S\'ersic profile fitting and compare them with a field sample. We find that the median $q$ of both star-forming and quiescent galaxies in clusters increases with stellar mass, similar to the field. Comparing the axis ratio distributions between clusters and the field in four mass bins, the distributions for star-forming galaxies in clusters are consistent with those in the field. Conversely, the distributions for quiescent galaxies in the two environments are distinct, most remarkably in $10.1\leq\log(M/{\rm M}_{\odot})<10.5$ where clusters show a flatter distribution, with an excess at low $q$. Modelling the distribution with oblate and triaxial components, we find that the cluster and field sample difference is consistent with an excess of flattened oblate quiescent galaxies in clusters. The oblate population contribution drops at high masses, resulting in a narrower $q$ distribution in the massive population than at lower masses. Using a simple accretion model, we show that the observed $q$ distributions and quenched fractions are consistent with a scenario where no morphological transformation occurs for the environmentally quenched population in the two intermediate mass bins. Our results suggest that environmental quenching mechanism(s) likely produce a population that has a different morphological mix than those resulting from the dominant quenching mechanism in the field., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 25 pages, 15 figures

We use photometric redshifts and statistical background subtraction to measure stellar mass functions in galaxy group-mass ($4.5-8\times10^{13}~\mathrm{M}_\odot$) haloes at $11$., Comment: Accepted July 6, 2021, MNRAS

We aim to determine the mass, velocity anisotropy, and pseudo phase-space density profiles (M(r), beta(r), and Q(r), respectively) of clusters of galaxies at the highest redshifts investigated in detail so far. We combine the GOGREEN and GCLASS spectroscopic data-sets for 14 clusters with mass M200 > 10^14 Msolar at redshifts 0.9 < z < 1.4. We stack these 14 clusters into an ensemble cluster of 581 member galaxies with stellar mass > 10^9.5 M_solar. We use the MAMPOSSt method and the inversion of the Jeans equation technique to determine M(r) and beta(r). We then combine the results of the M(r) and beta(r) analysis to determine Q(r) for the ensemble cluster. The concentration c200 of the ensemble cluster M(r) is in excellent agreement with predictions from LambdaCDM cosmological numerical simulations, and with previous determinations for clusters of similar mass and at similar redshifts, obtained from gravitational lensing and X-ray data. We see no significant difference between the total mass density and either the galaxy number density distributions or the stellar mass distribution. Star-forming galaxies are spatially significantly less concentrated than quiescent galaxies. The orbits of cluster galaxies are isotropic near the center and more radial outside. Star-forming galaxies and galaxies of low stellar mass tend to move on more radially elongated orbits than quiescent galaxies and galaxies of high stellar mass. Q(r), determined either using the total mass or the number density profile, is very close to the power-law behavior predicted by numerical simulations. The internal dynamics of clusters at the highest redshift probed in detail so far are very similar to those of lower-redshift clusters, and in excellent agreement with predictions of numerical simulations. We propose a phylogenetic approach (PA) as a novel and robust tool to detect galaxy populations (GPs) based on their chemical composition. The branches of the tree are interpreted as different GPs and the length between nodes as the internal chemical variation along a branch. We apply the PA using 30 abundance indices from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey to 475 galaxies in the Coma Cluster and 438 galaxies in the field. We find that a dense environment, such as Coma, shows several GPs, which indicates that the environment is promoting galaxy evolution. Each population shares common properties that can be identified in colour magnitude space, in addition to minor structures inside the red sequence. The field is more homogeneous, presenting one main GP. We also apply a principal component analysis (PCA) to both samples, and find that the PCA does not have the same power in identifying GPs.

We present the first public data release of the GOGREEN and GCLASS surveys of galaxies in dense environments, spanning a redshift range $0.8

We calculate H$\alpha$-based star formation rates and determine the star formation rate-stellar mass relation for members of three SpARCS clusters at $z \sim 1.6$ and serendipitously identified field galaxies at similar redshifts to the clusters. We find similar star formation rates in cluster and field galaxies throughout our range of stellar masses. The results are comparable to those seen in other clusters at similar redshifts, and consistent with our previous photometric evidence for little quenching activity in clusters. One possible explanation for our results is that galaxies in our $z \sim 1.6$ clusters have been accreted too recently to show signs of environmental quenching. We study the stellar mass functions (SMFs) of star-forming and quiescent galaxies in 11 galaxy clusters at 1.0

We present results on the environmental dependence of the star-forming galaxy main sequence in 11 galaxy cluster fields at $1.0 < z < 1.5$ from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN) survey. We use a homogeneously selected sample of field and cluster galaxies whose membership is derived from dynamical analysis. Using [OII]-derived star formation rates (SFRs), we find that cluster galaxies have suppressed SFRs at fixed stellar mass in comparison to their field counterparts by a factor of 1.4 $\pm$ 0.1 ($\sim3.3\sigma$) across the stellar mass range: $9.0 < \log(M_{*} /M_{\odot}) < 11.2$. We also find that this modest suppression in the cluster galaxy star-forming main sequence is mass and redshift dependent: the difference between cluster and field increases towards lower stellar masses and lower redshift. When comparing the distribution of cluster and field galaxy SFRs to the star-forming main sequence, we find an overall shift towards lower SFRs in the cluster population, and note the absence of a tail of high SFR galaxies as seen in the field. Observed mass-to-light ratios (M/L) of metal-rich globular clusters (GCs) disagree with theoretical predictions. This discrepancy is of fundamental importance since stellar population models provide the stellar masses that underpin most of extragalactic astronomy, near and far. We have derived radial velocities for 1,622 stars located in the centres of 59 Milky Way GCs - twelve of which have no previous kinematic information - using integral-field unit data from the WAGGS project. Using N-body models, we then determine dynamical masses and M/L ratios for the studied clusters. Our sample includes NGC 6528 and NGC 6553, which extend the metallicity range of GCs with measured M/L up to [Fe/H] ~ -0.1 dex. We find that metal-rich clusters have M/L more than two times lower than what is predicted by simple stellar population models. This confirms that the discrepant M/L-[Fe/H] relation remains a serious concern. We explore how our findings relate to previous observations, and the potential causes for the divergence, which we conclude is most likely due to dynamical effects., Comment: 14 pages, 11 figures; accepted in MNRAS

We present results on the rest-frame $H$-band luminosity functions (LF) of red sequence galaxies in seven clusters at 1.0 < z < 1.3 from the Gemini Observations of Galaxies in Rich Early Environments Survey (GOGREEN). Using deep GMOS-z' and IRAC $3.6 \mu$m imaging, we identify red sequence galaxies and measure their LFs down to $M_{H} \sim M_{H}^{*} + (2.0 - 3.0)$. By stacking the entire sample, we derive a shallow faint end slope of $ \alpha \sim -0.35^{+0.15}_{-0.15} $ and $ M_{H}^{*} \sim -23.52^{+0.15}_{-0.17} $, suggesting that there is a deficit of faint red sequence galaxies in clusters at high redshift. By comparing the stacked red sequence LF of our sample with a sample of clusters at z~0.6, we find an evolution in the faint end of the red sequence over the ~2.6 Gyr between the two samples, with the mean faint end red sequence luminosity growing by more than a factor of two. The faint-to-luminous ratio of our sample ($0.78^{+0.19}_{-0.15}$) is consistent with the trend of decreasing ratio with increasing redshift as proposed in previous studies. A comparison with the field shows that the faint-to-luminous ratios in clusters are consistent with the field at z~1.15 and exhibit a stronger redshift dependence. Our results support the picture that the build up of the faint red sequence galaxies occurs gradually over time and suggest that faint cluster galaxies, similar to bright cluster galaxies, experience the quenching effect induced by environment already at z~1.15., Comment: Accepted for publication in ApJ. 24 pages, 13 figures

We present a study of the evolution of brightest cluster galaxies (BCGs) in a sample of clusters at $0.05 \leq z<0.35$ from the SDSS and WISE with halo masses in the range $6 \times 10^{13}M_\odot$ (massive groups) - $10^{15.5}M_\odot$ (Coma-like clusters). We analyse optical and infrared colours and stellar masses of BCGs as a function of the mass of their host haloes. We find that BCGs are mostly red and quiescent galaxies and that a minority ($\sim 9$\%) of them are star-forming. We find that the optical $g-r$ colours are consistent with those of red sequence galaxies at the same redshifts; however, we detect the presence of a tail of blue and mostly star-forming BCGs preferentially located in low-mass clusters and groups. Although the blue tail is dominated by star-forming galaxies, we find that star-forming BCGs may also have red $g-r$ colours, indicating dust-enshrouded star formation. The fraction of star-forming BCGs increases with redshift and decreases with cluster mass and BCG stellar mass. We find that cool-core clusters host both star-forming and quiescent BCGs; however, non cool-core clusters are dominated by quiescent BCGs. Star formation appears thus as the result of processes that depend on stellar mass, cluster mass and cooling state of the intra-cluster medium. Our results suggest no significant stellar mass growth at $z<0.35$, supporting the notion that BCGs had accreted most of their mass by $z = 0.35$. We use the EAGLE hydrodynamical simulation to trace the quenching history of galaxies in its 10 most massive clusters. We use two criteria to identify moments when galaxies suffer significant changes in their star formation activity: {\it i)} the instantaneous star formation rate (SFR) strongest drop, $\Gamma_{\rm SFR}^{\rm SD}$, and {\it ii)} a "quenching" criterion based on a minimum threshold for the specific SFR of $\lesssim$ 10$^{-11}\rm yr^{-1}$. We find that a large fraction of galaxies ($\gtrsim 60\%$) suffer their $\Gamma_{\rm SFR}^{\rm SD}$ outside the cluster's R$_{200}$. This ``pre-processed" population is dominated by galaxies that are either low mass and centrals or inhabit low mass hosts ($10^{10.5}$M$_{\odot} \lesssim$ M$_{\rm host} \lesssim 10^{11.0}$M$_{\odot}$). The host mass distribution is bimodal, and galaxies that suffered their $\Gamma_{\rm SFR}^{\rm SD}$ in massive hosts ($10^{13.5}\rm M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{host} \lesssim 10^{14.0}M_{\odot}$) are mainly processed within the clusters. Pre-processing mainly limits the total stellar mass with which galaxies arrive in the clusters. Regarding quenching, galaxies preferentially reach this state in high-mass halos ($10^{13.5}\rm M_{\odot} \lesssim M_{host} \lesssim 10^{14.5}M_{\odot}$). The small fraction of galaxies that reach the cluster already quenched has also been pre-processed, linking both criteria as different stages in the quenching process of those galaxies. For the $z=0$ satellite populations, we find a sharp rise in the fraction of quenched satellites at the time of first infall, highlighting the role played by the dense cluster environment. Interestingly, the fraction of pre-quenched galaxies rises with final cluster mass. We present visual-like morphologies over 16 photometric bands, from ultra-violet to near infrared, for 8,412 galaxies in the Cluster Lensing And Supernova survey with Hubble (CLASH) obtained by a convolutional neural network (CNN) model. Our model follows the CANDELS main morphological classification scheme, obtaining the probability for each galaxy at each CLASH band of being spheroid, disk, irregular, point source, or unclassifiable. Our catalog contains morphologies for each galaxy with Hmag < 24.5 in every filter where the galaxy is observed. We trained an initial CNN model using approximately 7,500 expert eyeball labels from The Cosmic Assembly Near-IR Deep Extragalactic Legacy Survey (CANDELS). We created eyeball labels for 100 randomly selected galaxies per each of the 16-filters set of CLASH (1,600 galaxy images in total), where each image was classified by at least five of us. We use these labels to fine-tune the network in order to accurately predict labels for the CLASH data and to evaluate the performance of our model. We achieve a root-mean-square error of 0.0991 on the test set. We show that our proposed fine-tuning technique reduces the number of labeled images needed for training, as compared to directly training over the CLASH data, and achieves a better performance. This approach is very useful to minimize eyeball labeling efforts when classifying unlabeled data from new surveys. This will become particularly useful for massive datasets such as the ones coming from near future surveys such as EUCLID or the LSST. Using data from the WiFeS Atlas of Galactic Globular cluster Spectra we study the behaviour of the calcium triplet (CaT), a popular metallicity indicator in extragalactic stellar population studies. A major caveat of these studies is that the potential sensitivity to other stellar population parameters such as age, calcium abundance and the initial mass function has not yet been empirically evaluated. Here we present measurements of the strength of the CaT feature for 113 globular clusters in the Milky Way and its satellite galaxies. We derive empirical calibrations between the CaT index and both the iron abundance ([Fe/H]) and calcium abundance ([Ca/H]), finding a tighter relationship for [Ca/H] than for [Fe/H]. For stellar populations 3 Gyr and older the CaT can be used to reliably measure [Ca/H] at the 0.1 dex level but becomes less reliable for ages of $\sim 2$ Gyr and younger. We find that the CaT is relatively insensitive to the horizontal branch morphology. The stellar mass function however affects the CaT strengths significantly only at low metallicities. We present a detailed analysis of galaxy colours in two galaxy clusters at \mbox{z $\sim$ 0.4}, \mbox{MACS J0416.1-2403} and \mbox{MACS J1206.2-0847}, drawn from the CLASH-VLT survey, to investigate the role of pre-processing in the quenching of star formation. We estimate the fractions of red and blue galaxies within the main cluster and the detected substructures and study the trends of the colour fractions as a function of the projected distance from the cluster and substructure centres. Our results show that the colours of cluster and substructure members have consistent spatial distributions. In particular, the colour fractions of galaxies inside substructures follow the same spatial trends observed in the main clusters. Additionally, we find that at large cluster-centric distances \mbox{($r \geq r_{200}$)} the fraction of blue galaxies in both the main clusters and in the substructures is always lower than the average fraction of UVJ-selected star-forming galaxies in the field as measured in the COSMOS/UltraVista data set. We finally estimate environmental quenching efficiencies in the clusters and in the substructures and find that at large distances from the cluster centres, the quenching efficiency of substructures becomes comparable to the quenching efficiency of clusters. Using a sample of 4 galaxy clusters at $1.35 < z < 1.65$ and 10 galaxy clusters at $0.85 < z < 1.35$, we measure the environmental quenching timescale, $t_Q$, corresponding to the time required after a galaxy is accreted by a cluster for it to fully cease star formation. Cluster members are selected by a photometric-redshift criterion, and categorized as star-forming, quiescent, or intermediate according to their dust-corrected rest-frame colors and magnitudes. We employ a "delayed-then-rapid" quenching model that relates a simulated cluster mass accretion rate to the observed numbers of each type of galaxy in the cluster to constrain $t_Q$. For galaxies of mass $M_* \gtrsim 10^{10.5}~ \mathrm{M}_\odot$, we find a quenching timescale of $t_Q=$ 1.24 Gyr in the $z\sim1.5$ cluster sample, and $t_Q=$ 1.50 Gyr at $z\sim1$. Using values drawn from the literature, we compare the redshift evolution of $t_Q$ to timescales predicted for different physical quenching mechanisms. We find $t_Q$ to depend on host halo mass such that quenching occurs over faster timescales in clusters relative to groups, suggesting that properties of the host halo are responsible for quenching high-mass galaxies. Between $z=0$ and $z=1.5$, we find that $t_Q$ evolves faster than the molecular gas depletion timescale and slower than an SFR-outflow timescale, but is consistent with the evolution of the dynamical time. This suggests that environmental quenching in these galaxies is driven by the motion of satellites relative to the cluster environment, although due to uncertainties in the atomic gas budget at high redshift, we cannot rule out quenching due to simple gas depletion.
