The risk factors for the development of cervical insufficiency after a term delivery are assessed by comparing a cohort of patients with a control group of multiparous women who experienced repeat term delivery. The results have indicated that multiparous women experiencing cervical insufficiency after a term birth are more likely to have a previous precipitous delivery, a prolonged second stage of labor, or a previous curettage when compared with multiparous women experiencing a repeat term birth with no cervical insufficiency.

Efficacy of cerclage and bed rest versus bed rest-only for prevention of preterm birth in women with short cervix was studied. It was revealed that cerclage did not prevent preterm birth in women with short cervix as found on transvaginal ultrasound (TVU).

The frequency of uterine contractions in asymptomatic pregnant women with or without a short cervix was compared. It is concluded that the frequency of uterine contractions in asymptomatic women was not related to cervical length.

A repeat Pap smear one year later is the most cost-effective method of managing women who have Pap smears of atypical squamous cells of undetermined significance. This means that the cervical cells are abnormal but not cancerous. Many physicians believe such women should receive aggressive procedures such as biopsies. But this would be very expensive because over 2 million American women fall into this category each year. An analysis of eight different follow-up strategies found that the most cost-effective strategy is to repeat the Pap smear a year later with biopsies at that time if it has progressed to a precancerous condition.

Direct visual inspection of cervical ectopy may be comparable to computer planimetry analysis if 5% acetic acid is applied first. Cervical ectopy may be a risk factor for HIV infection. Researchers compared the diagnoses of cervical ectopy by three raters who performed direct visual assessment before and after application of 5% acetic acid and by computer planimetry. Computer planimetry seemed the most consistent tool for determining the percent of ectopy. Direct visual assessment after application of 5% acetic acid should be sufficient when computer planimetry cannot be used.

Background: Synchronous primary malignancies of the female genital tract are uncommon. Synchronous ovarian and cervical malignancies with different histopathology are rarer still. Case: A 55-year-old woman with poor general condition presented with ascites and post-menopausal bleeding. She was diagnosed to have ovarian serous adenocarcinoma, clinical stage III and cervical squamous cell carcinoma, clinical stage III B. She deteriorated rapidly after a cycle of chemotherapy and expired after nineteen days. Conclusion: Synchronous genital malignancies cause more clinical problems as compared to singly occurring ones. Hence such cases tend to be detected at an earlier stage. However, the prognosis is determined not only by clinical staging but also by histological grade of the adenomatous component.
