Background: This study investigated the relationships among psychological well-being, mindful eating, and weight in adolescents. Methods: Data of this cross-sectional study were collected from students of three high schools. Various questionnaires regarding mindful eating, eating behavior, emotion regulation, self-esteem, coping, body attitude, depression, and anxiety were given. BMI percentile was calculated and four groups were detemined. Hacettepe University Non-Inventional Clinical Researches Review Board approved the study (GO 18/1116). Results: Among 401 participants (59.1% girls), 16 adolescents (4.0%) were underweight, 295 (73.6%) were normal, 62 (15.5%) were overweight, and 28 (7.0%) were obese. Emotional and external eating were more common in girls. Restrictive eating was distinguishing between all adolescents, except ones with obesity and overweight. Adolescents with obesity perceived themselves as the least self-confident, attractive, and healthy, while the opposites were true for adolescents with normal weight. The groups that differed mostly from each other were normal weight and overweight. Conclusions: The psychological well-being of being overweight should not be underestimated. Emotional and external eating were correlated with low mindful eating, and gender differences were found in different aspects of mindful eating types. Calorie information and healthy eating interventions may be beneficial in boys, while interventions targeting to understand physical and emotional states may be beneficial in girls during the treatment of disordered eating behaviors.

Objective: The objective of this study is to investigate the validity and the reliability of Birth Satisfaction Scale (BSS) and to adapt it into the Turkish language. This scale is used for measuring maternal satisfaction with birth in order to evaluate women's birth perceptions., Methods: In this study there were 150 women who attended to inpatient postpartum clinic. The participants filled in an information form and the BSS questionnaire forms. The properties of the scale were tested by conducting reliability and validation analyses., Results: BSS entails 30 Likert-type questions. It was developed by Hollins Martin and Fleming. Total scale scores ranged between 30-150 points. Higher scores from the scale mean increases in birth satisfaction. Three overarching themes were identified in Scale: service provision (home assessment, birth environment, support, relationships with health care professionals); personal attributes (ability to cope during labour, feeling in control, childbirth preparation, relationship with baby); and stress experienced during labour (distress, obstetric injuries, receiving sufficient medical care, obstetric intervention, pain, prolonged labour and baby's health). Cronbach's alfa coefficient was 0.62., Conclusion: According to the present study, BSS entails 30 Likert-type questions and evaluates women's birth perceptions. The Turkish version of BSS has been proven to be a valid and a reliable scale., Competing Interests: No conflict of interest was declared by the authors.

Objectives: The University of Iowa Child Protection Program collaborated with Turkish professionals to develop a training program on child abuse and neglect during 2002-2006 with the goals of increasing professional awareness and number of multidisciplinary teams (MDT), regional collaborations, and assessed cases. This paper summarizes the 5-year outcome., Methods: A team of instructors evaluated needs and held training activities in Turkey annually, and provided consultation when needed. Descriptive analysis was done via Excel and SPSS software., Results: Eighteen training activities were held with 3,570 attendees. Over the study period, the number of MDTs increased from 4 to 14. The MDTs got involved in organizing training activities in their institutions and communities. The number of medical curriculum lectures taught by MDTs to medical students/residents, conferences organized by the MDTs, and lectures to non-medical professional audiences increased significantly (R(2)=91.4%, 83.8%, and 69.2%, respectively). The number of abuse cases assessed by the MDTs increased by five times compared to pre-training period., Conclusions: A culturally competent training program had a positive impact on professional attitudes and behaviors toward recognition and management of child abuse and neglect in Turkey. The need to partner with policy makers to revise current law in favor of a greater human services orientation became clear., Practice Implications: Pioneers in developing countries may benefit from collaborating with culturally competent instructors from countries with more developed child protection systems to develop training programs so that professional development can improve recognition and management of child abuse and neglect.

Salmonella typhi (S. typhi) is an important pathogen which causes typhoid fever. The cytokines released from the macrophages, playing a role in the host defense against Salmonella infection, are crucial in the defense against the infection. IFN-gamma provides a protection against Salmonella infection by developing macrophage activation in different mechanisms. This study was designed to investigate the effect of the recombinant IFN-gamma (rIFN-gamma) on the cytokines secreted from S. typhi stimulated macrophages. Macrophage isolation was done in the heparinized blood samples obtained from healthy people, and following the priming with rIFN-gamma for 72h the cells were stimulated by S. typhi and then the cytokine levels in culture supernatants were determined by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. It was observed that rIFN-gamma reversely increased the levels of IL-1, IL-2 the levels of which were decreased by S. typhi and that it increased TNF-alpha levels while suppressing the levels of antiinflammatory cytokines such as IL-10 and TGF-beta the levels of which were increased by S. typhi. Consequently, rIFN was observed to increase protective Th1 response by affecting the secretion of cytokine during S. typhi infection and it was considered to be a good target especially to prevent and treat invasive Salmonella infections.

Objective: To explore different aspects of executive function (i.e. sequencing, set shifting and mental flexibility) in children who are at high risk for schizophrenia by comparing them with normal controls., Method: The high risk (HR) group consisted of 30 children whose parents were diagnosed as schizophrenia. As the control group (CG) 30 children, whose parents did not meet any DSM IV diagnostic criteria for any psychiatric disorder, participated. They were age and sex matched with the HR group. For the evaluation of different domains of cognitive functions Wechsler intelligence scale for children-revised (WISC-R), and a group of neuropsychological tests, including Trail Making A-B Tests, Color Form Test, and Progressive Figures Test were administered. Behavioral problems were assessed using Hacettepe Adjustment Scale., Results: The subjects in the high risk group had significantly lower scores on Trail Making A-B, Color Form, Progressive Figures Tests, as well as subtests and scores of WISC-R (Information, Comprehension, Similarities, Picture Completion, Block Design, Object Assembly and Coding subtests, Verbal, Performance and Full Scale IQ scores). There is no significant difference between the two groups in the frequency and severity of behavioral problems., Conclusion: Children of parents with schizophrenia displayed significantly greater number of difficulties in several areas of executive function, such as sequencing, set shifting, and mental flexibility, when compared to their controls.

Mental health policy enables the translation of the knowledge base of 'how' to help children and families into the actual 'provision' of help. Amid competing pressures to leave the allocation of services to the market, policy is required to define needs, select priorities, match resources with need, and to measure what has been accomplished. Crafting policy requires balancing contrasting goals and approaches, here spelled out. Public mental health policy can be compared to other forms of continuous quality improvement (CQI).

Purpose: Cervical carcinoma is the second most common cancer among women worldwide. Viral infections, especially human papillomavirus (HPV) infections, are important factors in its etiology. Changes in apoptotic regulation are considered to have an important role in the carcinogenesis development. In this study, the relationship between apoptosis and HPV infection was investigated., Methods: HPV DNA and HPV DNA type 16 positivity were detected in 110 cervical smear samples with Real Time PCR and sequencing was performed for HPV DNA type 18. The presence of apoptosis was investigated using TUNEL and Annexin V staining methods and analyzed by fluorescence microscope and flow cytometry., Results: HPV DNA type 16 was detected in 9 samples (8.1%), HPV DNA type 18 positive in 6 samples (5.4%) and HPV types other than HPV type 16 and HPV type 18 in 9 samples (8.1%). A decrease apoptosis was found in HPV DNA positive samples compared with controls (P < 0.05)., Conclusion: The decrease of apoptosis during HPV infection might cause cellular immortality and then malignant transformation.

Interaction in problem-based learning (PBL) tutorials is not necessarily cooperative, which may account for variation in learning outcomes. Therefore, a cooperative assessment structure was introduced in a PBL course and the difference examined between this method and individual, lecture-based learning in mental health training. Experimental student groups gained more knowledge between pre- and post-test than did control groups, and the experimental students who scored low on the pre-test made the greatest gains. Groups that reported greater cooperation tended to have higher achievement scores. Experimental students felt that cooperation helped them learn but it also took more time and was sometimes chaotic.

Summary: The aim of this study was to evaluate the psychiatric symptoms among adolescents who were seen in the outpatient clinic for their physical complaints. Two hundred and ninety adolescent outpatients (154 males and 136 females) between 13 and 17 years of age (mean 14.3+/-1.2) are included in this study. Patients with known psychiatric disorders, mental retardation, organic brain diseases, or chronic organic problems were excluded. The Brief Symptom Inventory, which measures the psychiatric symptoms under the categories of anxiety, depression, negative self, somatization, and hostility, was given to all subjects. Symptoms of urinary and cardiovascular systems were related to hostility. Patients with obesity, hirsutism, problems of external genitalia, enuresis nocturna, abdominal pain, chest pain, and lack of weight gain showed psychiatric symptoms at pathological levels. Hostility symptom was found to be high in all groups.
