A new study investigates the pairing patterns in urban populations of European blackbirds to ascertain the part played by male beak colour and female body condition.

The vigilant behavior of two choughs, a purple sandpiper and two doves shows high short-term and rapidly declining predictability. This indicates low dimensional chaos underlying the timing of vigilance. The birds' vigilant behavior against predators is shown by their intermittent scanning of their proximate environment during feeding periods. In periodic or chaotic scanning, coordination reduces individual predictability and the time spent by a flock without any bird scanning.

This article documents the addition of 268 microsatellite marker loci to the Molecular Ecology Resources Database. Loci were developed for the following species: Alburnoides bipunctatus, Chamaerops humilis, Chlidonias hybrida, Cyperus papyrus, Fusarium graminearum, Loxigilla barbadensis, Macrobrachium rosenbergii, Odontesthes bonariensis, Pelteobagrus vachelli, Posidonia oceanica, Potamotrygon motoro, Rhamdia quelen, Sarotherodon melanotheron heudelotii, Sibiraea angustata, Takifugu rubripes, Tarentola mauritanica, Trimmatostroma sp. and Wallago attu. Body condition is an important determinant of fitness in many natural populations. However, as for many fitness traits, the underlying genes that regulate body condition remain elusive. The dopamine receptor D4 gene (DRD4) is a promising candidate as dopamine is known to play an important role in the regulation of food intake and the metabolism of both glucose and lipids in vertebrates. In this study, we take advantage of a large data set of greater flamingos, Phoenicopterus roseus, to test whether DRD4 polymorphism predicts early body condition (EBC) while controlling for whole-genome effects of inbreeding and outbreeding using microsatellite multilocus heterozygosity (MLH). We typed 670 of these individuals for exon 3 of the homologue of the human DRD4 gene and 10 microsatellite markers. When controlling for the effects of yearly environmental variations and differences between sexes, we found strong evidence of an association between exon 3 DRD4 polymorphisms and EBC, with 2.2-2.3% of the variation being explained by DRD4 polymorphism, whereas there was only weak evidence that MLH predicts EBC. Because EBC is most likely a polygenic trait, this is a considerable amount of variation explained by a single gene. This is to our knowledge, the first study to show an association between exon 3 DRD4 polymorphism and body condition in non-human animals. Results from both field and experimental foraging studies of little egrets (Egretta garzetta) are used to discuss the relationship between flocking, prey density and foraging efficiency. In the field, the latter was affected by group size. The two parameters studied, striking efficiency (percentage of successful pecks) and the number of captures per minute improved in large groups. On the other hand, only in one of two field sites did the results reveal an improvement under the form of a reduced variance in striking efficiency, of birds in a small group as compared to solitary birds. During the experiments, the number of captures per minute was higher in a pool with high prey density than in situation with low prey density, while differences were not significant when comparing medium with low or high prey density. Group size had no effect on capture rate. Striking efficiency, searching effort and prey selectivity were not affected by flocking or prey density.
