We use europium doped single crystalline NaYF$_4$ nanorods for probing the electric and magnetic contributions to the local density of optical states (LDOS). Reciprocically, we determine intrinsic properties of the emitters (oscillator strength, quantum yield) by comparing their measured and simulated optical responses in front of a mirror. We first experimentally determine the specifications of the nanoprobe (orientation and oscillator strength of the electric and magnetic dipoles moments) and show significant orientation sensitivity of the branching ratios associated with electric and magnetic transitions. In a second part, we measure the modification of the LDOS in front of a gold mirror in a Drexhage's experiment. We discuss the role of the electric and magnetic LDOS on the basis of numerical simulations, taking into account the orientation of the dipolar emitters. We demonstrate that they behave like degenerated dipoles sensitive to polarized partial LDOS.

Rare-earth doped nanocrystals possess optical transitions with significant either electric or magnetic dipole characters. They are of strong interest for understanding and engineering light-matter interactions at the nanoscale with numerous applications in nanophotonics. Here, we study the $^5$D$_0\rightarrow ^7$F$_1$ transition dipole vector in individual NaYF$_4$:Eu$^{3+}$ nanorod crystals by Fourier and confocal microscopies. {Single crystalline host matrix leads to narrow emission lines at room temperature that permit to separate Stark sublevels resulting from the crystal field splitting}. We observe a fully magnetic transition and {low variability} of the transition dipole orientation over several single nanorods. We estimate the proportion of the dipole transitions for the Stark sublevels. We also determine an effective altitude of the rod with respect to the substrate. The narrow emission lines characteristic of NaYF$_4$:Eu$^{3+}$ ensure well-defined electric or magnetic transitions, and are thus instrumental for probing locally their electromagnetic environment by standard confocal microscopy.

A novel bioinspired metaheuristic is proposed in this work, simulating how the coronavirus spreads and infects healthy people. From an initial individual (the patient zero), the coronavirus infects new patients at known rates, creating new populations of infected people. Every individual can either die or infect and, afterwards, be sent to the recovered population. Relevant terms such as re-infection probability, super-spreading rate or traveling rate are introduced in the model in order to simulate as accurately as possible the coronavirus activity. The Coronavirus Optimization Algorithm has two major advantages compared to other similar strategies. First, the input parameters are already set according to the disease statistics, preventing researchers from initializing them with arbitrary values. Second, the approach has the ability of ending after several iterations, without setting this value either. Infected population initially grows at an exponential rate but after some iterations, when considering social isolation measures and the high number recovered and dead people, the number of infected people starts decreasing in subsequent iterations. Furthermore, a parallel multi-virus version is proposed in which several coronavirus strains evolve over time and explore wider search space areas in less iterations. Finally, the metaheuristic has been combined with deep learning models, in order to find optimal hyperparameters during the training phase. Intrinsic localized modes, also called discrete breathers, can exist under certain conditions in one-dimensional nonlinear electrical lattices driven by external harmonic excitations. In this work, we have studied experimentally the efectiveness of generic periodic excitations of variable waveform at generating discrete breathers in such lattices. We study discrete breathers in prototypical nonlinear oscillator networks subjected to non-harmonic zero-mean periodic excitations. We show how the generation of stationary and moving discrete breathers are optimally controlled by solely varying the impulse transmitted by the periodic excitations, while keeping constant the excitation's amplitude and period. Our theoretical and numerical results show that the enhancer effect of increasing values of the excitation's impulse, in the sense of facilitating the generation of stationary and moving breathers, is due to a correlative increase of the breather's action and energy., Comment: 7 pages, 9 figures

It is shown that optimum control of dynamical localization (quantum suppression of classical diffusion) in the context of ultracold atoms in periodically shaken optical lattices subjected to time-periodic forces having equidistant zeros depends on the \textit{impulse} transmitted by the external force over half-period rather than on the force amplitude. This result provides a useful principle for optimally controlling dynamical localization in general periodic systems, which is capable of experimental realization., Comment: 7 pages, 6 figures

We uncover and characterize different chaotic transport scenarios on perfect periodic surfaces by controlling the chaotic dynamics of particles subjected to periodic external forces in the absence of a ratchet effect. After identifying relevant {\it symmetries} of chaotic solutions, analytical estimates in parameter space for the occurrence of different transport scenarios are provided and confirmed by numerical simulations. These scenarios are highly sensitive to variations of the system's asymmetry parameters, including the eccentricity of the periodic surface and the direction of dc and ac forces, which could be useful for particle sorting purposes in those cases where chaos is unavoidable.

We present the LAGOVirtual Project: an ongoing project to develop platform to collaborate in the Large Aperture GRB Observatory (LAGO). This continental-wide observatory is devised to detect high energy (around 100 GeV) component of Gamma Ray Bursts, by using the single particle technique in arrays of Water Cherenkov Detectors (WCD) at high mountain sites (Chacaltaya, Bolivia, 5300 m a.s.l., Pico Espejo, Venezuela, 4750 m a.s.l., Sierra Negra, Mexico, 4650 m a.s.l). This platform will allow LAGO collaboration to share data, and computer resources through its different sites. This environment has the possibility to generate synthetic data by simulating the showers through AIRES application and to store/preserve distributed data files collected by the WCD at the LAGO sites. The present article concerns the implementation of a prototype of LAGO-DR adapting DSpace, with a hierarchical structure (i.e. country, institution, followed by collections that contain the metadata and data files), for the captured/simulated data. This structure was generated by using the community, sub-community, collection, item model; available at the DSpace software. Each member institution-country of the project has the appropriate permissions on the system to publish information (descriptive metadata and associated data files). Spatiotemporal chaos arising from the competition between sine-Gordon-breather and kink-antikink-pair solitons by reshaping an ac force is demonstrated. After introducing soliton collective coordinates, Melnikov's method is applied to the resulting effective equation of motion to estimate the parameter-space regions of the ac force where homoclinic bifurcations are induced. The analysis reveals that the chaos-order threshold exhibits sensitivity to small changes in the force shape. Computer simulations of the sine-Gordon system show good agreement with these theoretical predictions., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures

The work presents two examples of simple mathematical formulas which are natural nonlinear modifications (one being a generalization) of Gielis' formula. These formulas involve a comparable number of parameters and provide non-Platonic representations of a vast diversity of natural shapes and patterns by incorporating diverse aspects of asymmetry and seeming disorder which are absent in the original Gielis' formula. It is also shown how diverse sequences resembling some natural-world pattern evolutions are also generated by such nonlinear formulas., Comment: 3 pages, 2 figures
