Search

This paper presents a new set of multijet event shape variables introduced to further understand the Mueller-Navelet jet topology. This topology consists of having at least one pair of jets with a very large rapidity separation between them, treating additional jet activity inclusively. This multijet topology is expected to shed light on the radiation pattern that is expected in the high-energy limit of the strong interaction. The paper relies on a Monte Carlo event generator analysis. One set of predictions uses the BFKLex event generator, which is based on Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) perturbative quantum chromodynamics (pQCD) evolution with a resummation of large logarithms of energy at leading-logarithmic accuracy. The BFKLex predictions are compared with a fixed-order next-to-leading order pQCD calculation using POWHEG matched to the parton shower of PYTHIA8 (NLO+PS), which is the standard for NLO generator predictions at the LHC. We find that both approaches lead to compatible results at current LHC energies, assuming the current experimental constraints for the reconstruction of low transverse momentum jets in ATLAS and CMS. This shows the reliability of the BFKL approach at describing the behavior of the strong interaction in the preasymptotic limit of high center-of-mass energies. Differences between the NLO+PS and the BFKL-based approaches are found when the jet multiplicity is increased or when the minimum transverse momentum of the jets is decreased.

In high-energy particle physics, the study of particle-particle correlations in proton-proton and heavy-ion collisions constitutes a pivotal frontier in the effort to understand the fundamental dynamics of the strong force. To the best of our knowledge, we employ for the first time the BFKL dynamics implemented in a Monte Carlo code in momentum space to compute final state correlations in proton-proton collisions. Our present work aims to investigate whether the particular dynamics of the high-energy limit of QCD can contribute to the long-range rapidity correlations and the enigmatic ridge effect in proton-proton collisions., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

Quantum properties of the state associated to the gluon Green's function in the BFKL approach are studied using a discretization in virtuality space. Considering the coupling constant as imaginary, its density matrix corresponds to a pure state for any energy. Non-linear corrections due to high gluon densities are modelled through a suppression of infrared modes in the Hamiltonian making it no longer hermitian. This introduces quantum decoherence into the evolution equation. When the coupling is real this leads to unbounded normalization of states which becomes bounded for sufficient saturation of infrared modes. Physical quantum properties, such as a purity smaller than one or a positive von Neumann entropy, hence are recovered when the infrared/ultraviolet original symmetry of the formalism is broken. Similarly to the work of Armesto, Dom{\'\i}nguez, Kovner, Lublinsky and Skokov in arXiv:1901.08080, an evolution equation of Lindblad type for the normalized density matrix describing the open system is obtained., Comment: 20 pages

This report was prepared on behalf of three Energy Frontier Topical Groups of the Snowmass 2021 Community Planning Exercise. It summarizes the status and implications of studies of strong interactions in high-energy experiments and QCD theory. We emphasize the rich landscape and broad impact of these studies in the decade ahead. Hadronic interactions play a central role in the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider (LHC) physics program, and strong synergies exist between the (HL-)LHC and planned or proposed experiments at the U.S. Electron-Ion Collider, CERN forward physics experiments, high-intensity facilities, and future TeV-range lepton and hadron colliders. Prospects for precision determinations of the strong coupling and a variety of nonperturbative distribution and fragmentation functions are examined. We also review the potential of envisioned tests of new dynamical regimes of QCD in high-energy and high-density scattering processes with nucleon, ion, and photon initial states. The important role of the high-energy heavy-ion program in studies of nuclear structure and the nuclear medium, and its connections with QCD involving nucleons are summarized. We address ongoing and future theoretical advancements in multi-loop QCD computations, lattice QCD, jet substructure, and event generators. A multi-TeV muon collider offers a spectacular opportunity in the direct exploration of the energy frontier. Offering a combination of unprecedented energy collisions in a comparatively clean leptonic environment, a high energy muon collider has the unique potential to provide both precision measurements and the highest energy reach in one machine that cannot be paralleled by any currently available technology. The topic generated a lot of excitement in Snowmass meetings and continues to attract a large number of supporters, including many from the early career community. In light of this very strong interest within the US particle physics community, Snowmass Energy, Theory and Accelerator Frontiers created a cross-frontier Muon Collider Forum in November of 2020. The Forum has been meeting on a monthly basis and organized several topical workshops dedicated to physics, accelerator technology, and detector R&D. Findings of the Forum are summarized in this report.

The purpose of the Low-$x$ Workshop series is to stimulate discussions between experimentalists and theorists in diffractive hadronic physics, QCD dynamics at low $x$, parton saturation, and exciting problems in QCD at HERA, Tevatron, LHC, RHIC, and the future EIC. The central topics of the workshop, summarized in the current Proceedings, were: Diffraction in ep and e-ion collisions (including EIC physics); Diffraction and photon-exchange in hadron-hadron, hadron-nucleus, and nucleus-nucleus collisions; Spin Physics; Low-$x$ PDFs, forward physics, and hadronic final states. An overwhelming number of theoretical predictions for hadron colliders require parton distribution functions (PDFs), which are an important ingredient of theory infrastructure for the next generation of high-energy experiments. This whitepaper summarizes the status and future prospects for determination of high-precision PDFs applicable in a wide range of energies and experiments, in particular in precision tests of the Standard Model and in new physics searches at the high-luminosity Large Hadron Collider and Electron-Ion Collider. We discuss the envisioned advancements in experimental measurements, QCD theory, global analysis methodology, and computing that are necessary to bring unpolarized PDFs in the nucleon to the N2LO and N3LO accuracy in the QCD coupling strength. Special attention is given to the new tasks that emerge in the era of the precision PDF analysis, such as those focusing on the robust control of systematic factors both in experimental measurements and theoretical computations. Various synergies between experimental and theoretical studies of the hadron structure are explored, including opportunities for studying PDFs for nuclear and meson targets, PDFs with electroweak contributions or dependence on the transverse momentum, for incisive comparisons between phenomenological models for the PDFs and computations on discrete lattice, and for cross-fertilization with machine learning/AI approaches. Multi-jet production at the LHC is an important process to study. In particular, events with final state kinematic configurations where we have two jets widely separated in rapidity with similar pT and lots of mini-jets or jets populating the space in between are relevant for the high energy limit of QCD. Keeping the jet multiplicity fixed, the study of these events is a good ground to test different models of multi-particle production in hadron-hadron collisions. The 13 TeV run of the LHC has provided a unique opportunity to explore multi-jet final states with unprecedented accuracy. An interesting region for study is that of events where one jet is tagged in the forward direction and another one in the backward direction and a plethora of low energy mini-jets populate the possibly large rapidity span in between them. Since the number of these events is very high, it is possible to introduce stringent constraints on the transverse momentum of the two leading jets which can be kept in small windows not very different from each other, defining what we call "twin jets". The associated "crowd" of mini-jets can also have a restricted span in transverse momentum. The study of these events for a fixed multiplicity is an ideal playground to investigate different models of multi-particle production in hadron-hadron collisions. We set up an exploratory analysis by using an ancient model of Chew and Pignotti to describe the gross features one can expect for the structure of single and double differential-in-rapidity cross sections and for particle-particle rapidity correlations when the longitudinal phase space completely decouples from the transverse degrees of freedom., Comment: 22 pages, many figures. We study ratios of azimuthal-angle distributions in Mueller-Navelet jets after imposing a rapidity veto constraint: the minijet radiation activity is restricted to only allow final-state partons separated at least a distance in rapidity $b$. It is well-known that the asymptotic growth with the rapidity separation of the two tagged jets of the NLLA BFKL Green's function requires a value of $b \simeq {\cal O} (2)$ in order to avoid unphysical cross sections. We further investigate this point from a phenomenological point of view and work out those values of $b$ which best fit angular distributions measured at the LHC in a realistic set-up where impact factors and parton distribution effects are also taken into account., Comment: 23 pages, 37 figures

We briefly review observables that were recently proposed in inclusive 3 jet production at hadronic colliders. They are based on azimuthal angle correlations between the final state jets and can be seen as a generalisation of the usual Mueller-Navelet setup. We discuss the stability of the observables once higher order corrections beyond the leading logarithmic accuracy are taken into account. Finally, we give a status report on a related project in which we examine azimuthal angle correlations for Mueller-Navelet jets after imposing a rapidity veto which forbids subsequent minijet emissions to be very close in rapidity., Comment: presented by D. Two relevant points related to the application of the BFKL formalism to phenomenology are discussed. First, we have presented a set of observables characterizing multi-jet configurations event by event (average transverse momentum, average azimuthal angle, average ratio of jet rapidities) which can be used to find distinct signals of BFKL dynamics at the LHC. A numerical analysis has been shown using the Monte Carlo event generator BFKLex, modified to include higher-order collinear corrections in addition to the transverse-momentum implementation of the NLO kernel. We require to have two tagged forward/backward jets in the final state. Second, the structure of the BFKL equation changes if infrared boundary conditions are imposed when considering the running of the coupling. The cut in the complex angular momentum plane becomes an infinite series of Regge poles. Integrating along a contour off the real axis we find a strong dependence of the intercepts and collinear regions on the choice of the boundary conditions. The mean transverse scales dominant in the gluon ladder increase. This could have interesting phenomenological consequences., Comment: 6 pages, presented by A. Recently, a new family of observables consisting of azimuthal-angle generalised ratios was proposed in a kinematical setup that resembles the usual Mueller-Navelet jets but with an additional tagged jet in the central region of rapidity. Non-tagged minijet activity between the three jets can affect significantly the azimuthal angle orientation of the jets and is accounted for by the introduction of two BFKL gluon Green functions. Here, we calculate the, presumably, most relevant higher order corrections to the observables by now convoluting the three leading-order jet vertices with two gluon Green functions at next-to-leading logarithmic approximation. The corrections appear to be mostly moderate giving us confidence that the recently proposed observables are actually an excellent way to probe the BFKL dynamics at the LHC. The goal of this report is to give a comprehensive overview of the rich field of forward physics, with a special attention to the topics that can be studied at the LHC. The report starts presenting a selection of the Monte Carlo simulation tools currently available, chapter 2, then enters the rich phenomenology of QCD at low, chapter 3, and high, chapter 4, momentum transfer, while the unique scattering conditions of central exclusive production are analyzed in chapter 5. The last two experimental topics, Cosmic Ray and Heavy Ion physics are presented in the chapter 6 and 7 respectively. We study differential cross sections for the production of three and four jets in multi-Regge kinematics, the main interest lying on azimuthal angle dependences. The theoretical setup is the jet production from a single BFKL ladder with a convolution of two/three BFKL Green functions, where two forward/backward jets are always tagged in the final state. We study high-energy jet production in the multi-Regge limit making use of the Monte Carlo event generator BFKLex which includes collinear improvements in the form of double-log contributions as presented in [1]. Making use of the anti-kt jet algorithm in the FastJet implementation, we present results for the average transverse momentum and azimuthal angle of the produced jets when two tagged forward/backward jets are present in the final state. We evaluate differential cross sections for production of four jets in multi-Regge kinematics at a hadron collider. The main focus lies on azimuthal angle dependences. As in previous studies, the ratios of correlation functions of products of cosines of azimuthal angle differences among the tagged jets offer us the cleanest quantities to compare with experimental data. The calculations are based on the jet production from a single BFKL ladder with a convolution of three BFKL Green functions where we always have two forward/backward jets tagged in the final state. We also demand the tagging of two further jets in more central regions of the detectors with a relative separation in rapidity from each other, plus the inclusive production of an arbitrary number of mini-jets. We show that dependences on the transverse momenta and rapidity of the two central jets can be a distinct signal of the onset of BFKL dynamics., Comment: 13 pages, 4 figures

We investigate the effect of the resummation of collinear double logarithms in the BFKL gluon Green function using the Monte Carlo event generator BFKLex. The resummed collinear terms in transverse momentum space were calculated in Ref. [1] and correspond to the addition to the NLO BFKL kernel of a Bessel function of the first kind whose argument contains the strong coupling and a double logarithm of the ratio of the squared transverse momenta of the reggeized gluons. We discuss how these additional terms improve the collinear convergence of the whole approach and reduce the asymptotic growth with energy of cross sections. Taking advantage of the Monte Carlo implementation, we show how the new results reduce the diffusion of the gluon ladder into infrared and ultraviolet transverse momentum scales, while strongly affecting final state configurations by reducing the mini-jet multiplicity., Comment: 12 pages, 5 figures

We define new observables sensitive to BFKL dynamics in the context of multijet production at the large hadron collider (LHC). We propose the study of the inclusive production of three jets well separated in rapidity from each other, with two of them being very forward. We show that the tagging of a third jet in the central region of rapidity allows for a very strong test of the BFKL formalism. In particular, we have studied two projections on azimuthal angles for the differential cross section which allow for the definition of many different observables whose behavior when varying the $p_t$ and rapidity of the central jet is a distinct signal of BFKL dynamics. We discuss aspects of our recent derivation of the gluon Regge trajectory at two loop from Lipatov's high energy effective action. We show how the gluon Regge trajectory can be rigorously defined through renormalization of the high energy divergence of the reggeized gluon propagator. We discuss the solution to the BFKL equation in the adjoint representation at LO and NLO accuracy for the N = 4 SUSY theory. We use Monte Carlo techniques to study numerically the Gluon Green's function at LO and NLO directly written in the transverse momentum space which allows for the factorization of its infrared divergencies. We discuss computational details of our recent result, namely, the first derivation of the two-loop gluon Regge trajectory within the framework of Lipatov's high energy effective action. In particular, we elaborate on the direct evaluation of Feynman two-loop diagrams by using the Mellin-Barnes representations technique. We present the derivation of the two-loop gluon Regge trajectory using Lipatov's high energy effective action and a direct evaluation of Feynman diagrams. Using a gauge invariant regularization of high energy divergences by deforming the light-cone vectors of the effective action, we determine the two-loop self-energy of the reggeized gluon, after computing the master integrals involved using the Mellin-Barnes representations technique. The self-energy is further matched to QCD through a recently proposed subtraction prescription. The Regge trajectory of the gluon is then defined through renormalization of the reggeized gluon propagator with respect to high energy divergences. Our result is in agreement with previous computations in the literature, providing a non-trivial test of the effective action and the proposed subtraction and renormalization framework., Comment: 22 pages

In the context of evolution equations and scattering amplitudes in the high energy limit of the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory we investigate in some detail the BFKL gluon Green function at next-to-leading order. In particular, we study its collinear behaviour in terms of an expansion in different angular components. We also perform a Monte Carlo simulation of the different final states contributing to such a Green function and construct the diffusion pattern into infrared and ultraviolet modes and multiplicity distributions, making emphasis in separating the gluon contributions from those of scalars and gluinos. We find that the combined role of the non-gluonic degrees of freedom is to improve the collinear behavior and reduce the diffusion into ultraviolet regions while not having any effect on the average multiplicities or diffusion into the infrared. In terms of growth with energy, the non-zero conformal spin components are mainly driven by the gluon terms in the BFKL kernel. For zero conformal spin (Pomeron) the effect of the scalar and gluino sectors is to dramatically push the Green function towards higher values., Comment: 12 pages, 8 figures

Using Monte Carlo integration techniques, we investigate running coupling effects compatible with the high energy bootstrap condition to all orders in the strong coupling in evolution equations valid at small values of Bjorken x in deep inelastic scattering. A model for the running of the coupling with analytic behavior in the infrared region and compatible with power corrections to jet observables is used. As a difference to the fixed coupling case, where the momentum transfer acts as an effective strong cut-off of the diffusion to infrared scales, in our running coupling study the dependence on the momentum transfer is much milder.

We review Lipatov's high energy effective action and show that it is a useful computational tool to calculate scattering amplitudes in (quasi)-multi-Regge kinematics. We explain in some detail our recent work where a novel regularization and subtraction procedure has been proposed that allows to extend the use of this effective action beyond tree level. We study the solution of the BFKL equation in the adjoint representation for the N=4 SUSY theory at NLO accuracy. Consistency with the large momentum transfer solution obtained by Fadin and Lipatov is found. We investigate, for large and small values of the momentum transfer, the growth with energy of the Green function, its collinear behaviour and the expansion in azimuthal angle Fourier components., Comment: 7 pages, 4 figures

An iterative solution best suited for a Monte Carlo implementation is presented for the non-forward BFKL equation in a generic color representation. We introduce running coupling effects compatible with bootstrap to all orders in perturbation theory. The 2011 Les Houches workshop was the first to confront LHC data. In the two years since the previous workshop there have been significant advances in both soft and hard QCD, particularly in the areas of multi-leg NLO calculations, the inclusion of those NLO calculations into parton shower Monte Carlos, and the tuning of the non-perturbative parameters of those Monte Carlos. These proceedings describe the theoretical advances that have taken place, the impact of the early LHC data, and the areas for future development., Comment: 220 pages

The two loop (NLO) diagrams with quark content contributing to the gluon Regge trajectory are computed within the framework of Lipatov's effective action for QCD, using the regularization procedure for longitudinal divergencies recently proposed by two of us in http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:1110.6741. Perfect agreement with previous results in the literature is found, providing a robust check of the regularization prescription and showing that the high energy effective action is a very useful computational tool in the quasi-multi-Regge limit., Comment: 12 page, many figures

We factorize the infrared divergences of the non-forward BFKL Green function for a general t-channel projection of the color quantum numbers and study the properties of the infrared finite remainder in the case of color octet exchange. The octet Green function is compared with the singlet case for different values of the momentum transfer. The octet Green function plays an important role in the calculation of the finite remainder of the two-loop six-point MHV planar amplitude in N = 4 SYM as it was demonstrated by Bartels, Lipatov and one of us in http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:0802.2065 and http://arXiv.org/abs/arXiv:0807.0894. A comparison with regularizations preserving conformal invariance at large momentum transfer is shown., Comment: 12 pages, 7 figures

The forward BFKL equation is discretised in virtuality space and it is shown that the diffusion into infrared and ultraviolet momenta can be understood in terms of a semi-infinite matrix. The square truncation of this matrix can be exponentiated leading to asymptotic eigenstates sharing many features with the BFKL gluon Green's function in the limit of large matrix size. This truncation is closely related to a representation of the XXX Heisenberg spin $= - \frac{1}{2}$ chain with SL(2) invariance where the Hamiltonian acts on a symmetric double copy of the harmonic oscillator. A simple modification of the BFKL matrix suppressing the infrared modes generates evolution with energy compatible with unitarity., Comment: Small changes, same conclusions, matching the published version in EPJC

Ratios of azimuthal angle correlations between two jets produced at large rapidity separation are studied in the N=4 super Yang-Mills theory (MSYM). It is shown that these observables, which directly prove the SL(2,C) symmetry present in gauge theories in the Regge limit, exhibit an excellent perturbative convergence. They are compared to those calculated in QCD for different renormalization schemes concluding that the momentum-substraction (MOM) scheme with the Brodsky-Lepage-Mackenzie (BLM) scale-fixing procedure captures the bulk of the MSYM results., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures

We analyze neutral Higgs boson decays into squark pairs in the minimal supersymmetric extension of the Standard Model and improve previous analyses. In particular the treatment of potentially large higher-order corrections due to the soft SUSY breaking parameters A_b, the trilinear Higgs coupling to sbottoms, and mu, the Higgsino mass parameter, is investigated. We compare two Monte Carlo implementations of resummation schemes for the description of parton evolution at small values of Bjorken x. One of them is based on the Balitsky-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) evolution equation and generates fully differential parton distributions in momentum space making use of reggeized gluons. The other one is based on the Catani-Ciafaloni-Fiorani-Marchesini (CCFM) partonic kernel where QCD coherence effects are introduced. It has been argued that both approaches agree with each other in the x -> 0 limit. We show that this is not the case for azimuthal angle dependent quantities since at high energies the BFKL approach is dominated by its zero conformal spin component while the CCFM gluon Green function receives contributions from all conformal spins even at very small x., Comment: 19 pages, 19 figures
