Abstract

Domain decomposition is a strategy designed to be used on parallel machines. This strategy leads to hybrid methods between direct and iterative solvers and allows users to benefit from the advantages of both. Lately, the growing size of simulations in electromagnetics brought to light the interest of using domain decomposition. Nonlinearity is also one of the problem specificities where the need for an efficient solver is high. This article provides a comparison between two techniques of domain decomposition for solving 3-D nonlinear magnetostatic problems. A contactor test case with two nonlinear materials was used to estimate the performances of both methods.

11. A Time-Stepping Volume Integral Formulation for Nonlinear Field-Circuit Coupled Problems

Abstract

A B-conforming time-stepping volume integral method (VIM) formulation for nonlinear 3-D field-circuit coupled problems is presented in this article. The advantage of the VIM with respect to the finite element method (FEM) is that only the ferromagnetic regions have to be discretized, thus avoiding to mesh the air. It is an appealing approach given that it avoids numerical errors that can arise from meshing the air. A direct formulation is explained, assembling in a system the magnetic field and the circuit contributions when coils are present. An application to a current transformer is shown, comparing it to the FEM to validate its accuracy.

Abstract

International audience; This paper shows a comparison between Vector fitting and rational Krylov fitting techniques for the determination of rational models concerning the fitting accuracy, the computational performances and the model order. Primarily, the mathematics behind the second technique are presented. It should be noted that rational Krylov fitting have never been used in transmission line modeling. A new procedure is proposed to use rational Krylov fitting instead of vector fitting in the universal line model (ULM). Furthermore, it is demonstrated that this procedure has several advantages over the traditional one. Two illustrative examples involving a transmission system are presented for validation of the new procedure.

Abstract

International audience; A fast and general Partial Element Equivalent Circuit (PEEC) method based on the Fast-Fourier-Transform (FFT) is proposed for the first time. The numerical tool only requires common CAD data input files (e.g. .stl format), then the discretization process is performed automatically by means of a fast voxelization technique based on ray intersection, thus drastically reducing the human effort required to setup the model. The method allows for considering at the same time inductive and capacitive effects, and is focused on power electronics applications where propagation effects can be neglected, whereas all the other electromagnetic phenomena are considered. Specifically, the proposed method is particularly suited for problems where both electric and magnetic fields are equally important and therefore quasistatic approximations do not apply. An ad-hoc preconditioner which significantly speeds-up the solver is also proposed and, thanks to the FFT, both memory and computation time are significantly reduced, without the need of applying data compression. Both linear and non-linear materials are considered by the proposed FFT-PEEC method. Sample implementation of the method is made publicly available.

Abstract

International audience; Defaults propagation in Membrane Electrode Assemblies (MEA) of Polymer Electrolyte Membrane Fuel Cells (PEMFC) was investigated through an Accelerated Stress Test (AST) consisting load (and thus potential) cycling, load driven RH cycling and Open Circuit Voltage. Customized MEA without and with several defects at the anode Catalyst Layer (CL), i.e. lack or over thickness, at two different locations (near the hydrogen inlet or near the hydrogen outlet) were fabricated and subjected to the AST. Electrochemical characterization was performed periodically using a segmented cell which allows to follow the evolution of the cell performance, as well as anode and cathode and ElectroChemical Surface Area (ECSA) over the test period with a spatial resolution along the gas channels. The primary results indicate a significant impact of the default on the aging rates in all cases, as well as a significant impact on the default location in the case of the MEA with a default of the anode CL near the hydrogen inlet: we observed a default propagation along the hydrogen flow direction monitored through the evolution of local ECSA and its standard variation between the beginning and the end of the test. The segments neighboring the defect seemed more affected than the others. No significant impact was evidenced however when the default was located near the anode outlet. These observations were completed by post-mortem analysis of the membrane following the AST: the MEA with a lack of anode CL evidenced thinning of the PFSA layer on the cathode side near the location of the default.

Abstract

The sensitivity analysis of electromagnetic quantities such as the magnetic force and torque is a crucial step when optimizing electromagnetic devices with gradient-based optimizers. This article provides an analytical derivation of those two quantities using the virtual work principle in a finite element package. It is suitable for any kind of optimization. A focus on the particular use of this sensitivity on shape optimization is presented. The development and validation of the method is detailed in this case. Finally, it is applied to the shape optimization of a switch reluctance motor (SRM) to improve its performances.

Abstract

This paper focuses on proximity losses prediction in conductors of power electronics transformers. The method is based on the concept of equivalent complex permeability applied to rectangular conductors. A 1-D analytical model is analyzed. It has been shown that the 1-D model does not take into account edge effects. Two complementary approaches have been proposed. One treats scattered conductors; other deals with package of conductors. Both approaches are compared with a good accuracy and economic computation time. Abstract

This paper deals with the use of spherical harmonic representation to identify the magnetic multipolar sources associated to a given item, by measuring the near field around it. If the model presents many advantages, its use in an inverse problem approach requires special caution to critical points like the choice of sensor number and location. A method is presented that makes it possible, from a high number of information, to reduce the sensor number to a minimum and to optimize their location with respect to robustness. The robustness issue is solved by using an original method based on a genetic algorithm. A simple but didactic example illustrates the difficulties that can be met and our strategy to overcome them. Abstract

This paper proposes a review of the magnetostatic moments method (MOM) applied to model electromagnetic devices. This method is now well-known for its 'light weight' and its simplicity of implementation. Its main advantages are the nonrequirement of an air region mesh and a coarse mesh of the ferromagnetic material. It leads to very fast resolution and very accurate field, force, and moment computations. The paper proposes a state of the art of this approach and shows some efficient realizations. Abstract

The approach of magnetic scalar potential [T.sub.o][PHI]-[PHI] is widely popular for solving magnetic problems coupled with electric circuits. However, cuts are required to preserve the Ampere's law for the case of ferromagnetic circuits with holes surrounded by coils. The manual definition of cuts might not be evident even for experimented finite-element (FE) users. This paper presents a new automatic cuts generation algorithm. First, we present a tool that allows determining if a ferromagnetic region has holes or not. If holes are found, the region is then inflated to get automatically needed cuts. The presented algorithm is also applicable to generate electric cuts in massive conductors. Abstract

We present a model of a rotating arc by coupling a finite element method (FEM) and an arc model. A FEM is used to calculate magnetic field between electrodes taking into account the real current distribution in the contacts and in the arc; moreover, ferromagnetic effects and induced currents can be taken into account. A phenomenological arc model is used to predict the arc voltage, which depends on the local magnetic field and the arc length. This arc voltage is updated as the arc displaces itself across the contact surface. The information about arc voltage and local circuit equations is sufficient to find the velocity of the moving arc; hence this model seems more effective than models using Lorentz-forces to describe arc movement which need a priori knowledge about viscosity. This presented method seems to be a promising tool to describe the behavior of rotating arcs in vacuum circuit breakers. Abstract

In this paper, we propose a new approach to solve the magnetostatic inverse problem. The goal of the work is, from measurements of the magnetic field in the air, to rebuild a model for the magnetization of a ferromagnetic shell structure. It's then possible to calculate the field where sensors cannot be placed. This problem is usually ill posed or rank-deficient, it's then necessary to use mathematical regularizations. These techniques are based upon the injection of knowledge about the mathematical behavior of the solution. We preferred to add physical information. This solution allows us to get a faithful solution and to reduce significantly the number of sensors. Moreover, our method has been tested on a mock-up with real measurements and led to very promising results. Abstract

A quick and easy computation involving magnetic rods is presented. Rods are replaced by different kinds of distributions (magnetization, magnetic charges) calculated by collocation. These distributions can be punctual or surfacic (disc) in the rod according to the density of the mesh used. Then, three-dimensional geometries can be quickly and easily modeled instead of using uneasy finite-element methods. Abstract

International audience; An algorithm for the reconstruction of unknown magnetization in an iron sheet is proposed. The magnetization distribution is reconstructed from magnetic measurements made on sensors placed in the surrounded air region. The problem is solved thanks to the inversion of an integral formulation, based on the face interpolation of the flux density in the sheet and leading to a linear matrix system. The final system is solved with a balanced singular value decomposition in order to stabilize the solution. The efficiency of the method is demonstrated with both numerical and experimental test cases.
