We present a thorough introduction to the tools of category theory required for formulating gauge theories based on 2-connections. We provide a detailed construction of the categorical generalization of BF theory, dubbed BFCG, also known as 2BF. Similar to BF gravity, it is known that BFCG can be deformed to give general relativity. Here, we obtain an alternative relation between BFCG and gravity, which consists of coupling general relativity and BFCG by means of the volume form constructed out of the BFCG connections. The resulting theory, closely related to unimodular gravity, is a generalization of BF sequestered gravity not only in the sense that it adds new fields but also in that it allows for new choices for the volume form that is coupled to gravity. Furthermore, we show that BF sequestered gravity in the abelian case is recovered for a specific choice of the 2-group.

We revisit and extend the study of null geodesics around a slowly rotating black hole in Chern-Simons modified gravity. We employ the Hamilton-Jacobi formalism to derive the equations for the shadow profile and determine its shape. We compare our results with numerical ray tracing, finding good agreement within the validity of our approximations for slow rotation and small Chern-Simons coupling. We analyze cosmography as a tool to constrain modified gravity theories. We take four distinct models and obtain their parameters in terms of the cosmographic parameters favored by observational data of strong gravitational lensing. We contrast with the values obtained by direct comparison between each model and the observational data. In general, we find consistency between the two approaches at 2$\sigma$ for all models considered in this work. Our study bridges the gap between theoretical predictions of modified gravity and empirical observations of strong gravitational lensing, providing a simple methodology to test the validity of these models., Comment: 18 pages, 8 figures

We apply Wald's formalism to a Lagrangian within generalised Proca gravity that admits a Schwarzschild black hole with a non-trivial vector field. The resulting entropy differs from that of the same black hole in General Relativity by a logarithmic correction modulated by the only independent charge of the vector field. We find conditions on this charge to guarantee that the entropy is a non-decreasing function of the black hole area, as is the case in GR. If this requirement is extended to black hole mergers, we find that for Planck scale black holes, a non-decreasing entropy is possible only if the area of the final black hole is several times larger than the initial total area of the merger. Finally, we discuss some implications of the vector Galileon entropy from the point of view of entropic gravity.

The gravitational deflection of light is a critical test of modified theories of gravity. A few years ago, Gibbons and Werner introduced a definition of the deflection angle based on the Gauss-Bonnet theorem. In more recent years, Arakida proposed a related idea for defining the deflection angle in non-asymptotically flat spacetimes. We revisit this idea and use it to compute the angular difference in the Kottler geometry and a non-asymptotically flat solution in Horndeski gravity. Our analytic and numerical calculations show that a triangular array of laser beams can be designed so that the proposed definition of the deflection angle is sensitive to different sources of curvature. Moreover, we find that near the photon sphere, the deflection angle in the Horndeski solution is similar to its Schwarzschild counterpart, and we confirm that the shadows seen by a static observer are identical., Comment: 32+1 pages, 6 figures, 2 tables

In this paper we study the viability of an entropic cosmological model. The effects of entropic gravity are derived from a modified entropy-area relationship with a volumetric entropy term. This model describes a late time limit cosmic acceleration, whose origin is related to a volumetric term in the entropy. Moreover, we analyze the phenomenological implications of the entropic model using the Supernovae Pantheon compilation and the observational Hubble parameter data to find consistency with cosmological observations. Finally, we show the equivalence between the entropic model and a brane world cosmological model, by means of an effective geometrical construction., Comment: 11 pages, 3 figures. Rastall gravity is a modified gravity proposal that incorporates a non-conserved energy momentum tensor (EMT). We study the equivalence between Rastall gravity and general relativity, analyzing its consequences for an EMT of dark matter and dark energy. We find that the translation between the Rastall and Einstein interpretations modifies the equation of state for each component. For instance, cold dark matter can translate into warm dark matter. In this paper we present a Yang-Mills type gauge theory of vector-tensor gravity, where the tetrad, the spin connection and vector field are identified with components of the gauge field. This setup leads to a theory that is contained in Generalized Proca theories. We solve for static and spherically symmetric space-time and show that there are two branches of solutions, one where the metric is asymptotically Schwarzschild even though there is a cosmological constant in the action, and another one where the metric is asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter. Also, we study the effect of the vector field on homogeneous and isotropic spacetimes, finding that it contributes to the accelerated expansion of the metric.

We establish the existence of time-dependent solitons in a modified gravity framework, which is defined by the low energy limit of theories with a weakly broken galileon symmetry and a mass term. These are regular vacuum configurations of finite energy characterized by a single continuous parameter representing the amplitude of the scalar degree of freedom at the origin. When the central field amplitude is small the objects are indistinguishable from boson stars. In contrast, increasing the central value of the amplitude triggers the effect of higher derivative operators in the effective theory, leading to departures from the previous solutions, until the theory becomes strongly coupled and model-dependent. The higher order operators are part of the (beyond) Horndeski theory, hence the name of the compact objects. Moreover, a remnant of the galileon non-renormalization theorem guarantees that the existence and properties of these solutions are not affected by quantum corrections. Finally, we discuss the linear stability under small radial perturbations, the mass-radius relation, the compactness, the appearance of innermost stable circular orbits and photon spheres, and some astrophysical signatures (accretion disks, gravitational radiation and lensing) that may be relevant to falsify the model., Comment: 49+1 pages, 17 figures, 2 tables. The propagation of gravitational waves offers new possibilities for testing the theory of gravity. Amongst these possibilities there is the luminosity distance of gravitational waves, $d_{gw}$. It has been proposed to study this property by means of phenomenological parametrizations, which in this work we confront to the actual predictions of Einstein-scalar-Gauss-Bonnet gravity, finding that the simplest parametrization performs better. We propose a novel parametrization that covers a wider range of models, in particular, within degenerate higher order scalar-tensor theories of gravity. Also, regarding model selection from best-fit parameters, we find that even quantities derived from $d_{gw}$ can lead to inconsistent model selection if they are treated independently. This highlights that it is essential to perform simultaneous analysis and include other types of data. By determining the relation between topological M-theory and the Chern-Simons actions for a gauge field constructed from the Lie algebra of either SL(2,R)x SL(2,R) or SL(2,C)x SL(2,C), depending on the sign of the space-time curvature, we show that the standard and exotic actions of 3-dimensional gravity can be recovered from topological M-theory. With this result, we provide a concrete realisation of a conjecture by Dijkgraaf et al. stating that the partition function of topological M-theory is equivalent to the partition function of a black hole in a related theory. The deflection of light in the strong field limit is an important test for alternative theories of gravity. However, solutions for the metric that allow for analytic computations are not always available. We implement a hybrid analytic-numerical approximation to determine the deflection angle in static, spherically symmetrics pacetimes. We apply this to a set of numerical black hole solutions within the class of theories known as Degenerate Higher Order Scalar-tensor Theories. Comparing our results to a more time consuming full numerical integration, we find that we can accurately describe the deflection angle for light rays passing at arbitrary distances from the photon sphere with a combination of two analytic-numerical approximations. Furthermore, we find a range of parameters where our DHOST black holes predict strong lensing effects whose size is comparable with the uncertainty in the properties of the supermassive black hole in M87 reported by the Event Horizon Telescope, showing that strong lensing is a viable alternative to put constraints on these models., Comment: 22 pages, 8 figures

Unimodular gravity provides a theoretical framework that allows for non-conservation of energy-momentum, with possible implications for the cosmological constant problem. It is then important to study the predictions of unimodular gravity in other gravitational regimes. In this work we study stellar dynamics under the assumption of non-conserved energy-momentum. We find that constant density objects can be as compact as Schwarzschild black holes. For polytropic objects, we find modifications due to the non-conservation of energy-momentum that lead to sizeable effects that could be constrained with observational data. Additionally, we revisit and clarify the Reissner-Nordstr\"om solution in unimodular gravity. We discuss a new covariant scalar-tensor system aimed to realise Ho\v{r}ava proposal for a power-counting renormalizable theory of gravity, with the special feature of not propagating scalar degrees of freedom in an appropriate gauge. The theory is characterized by a new symmetry acting on the metric, that can protect the particular form of its interactions. The set-up spontaneously breaks Lorentz symmetry by means of a time-like scalar field profile. By selecting a unitary gauge for the scalar, we show that this theory describes the dynamics of a spin two degree of freedom, whose equations of motion contain two time derivatives and up to six spatial derivatives. The recent observations of neutron star mergers have changed our perspective on scalar- tensor theories of gravity, favouring models where gravitational waves travel at the speed of light. In this work we consider a scalar-tensor set-up with such a property, belonging to a beyond Horndeski system, and we numerically investigate the physics of locally asymptotically flat black holes and relativistic stars. We first determine regular black hole solutions equipped with horizons: they are characterized by a deficit angle at infinity, and by large contributions of the scalar to the geometry in the near horizon region. We then study configurations of incompressible relativistic stars. We show that their compactness can be much higher than stars with the same energy density in General Relativity, and the scalar field profile imposes stringent constraints on the star properties. These results can suggest new ways to probe the efficiency of screening mechanisms in strong gravity regimes, and can help to build specific observational tests for scalar-tensor gravity models with unit speed for gravitational waves., Comment: 20 pages, 6 figures

Studying the physics of compact objects in modified theories of gravity is important for understanding how future observations can test alternatives to General Relativity. We consider a subset of vector-tensor Galileon theories of gravity characterized by new symmetries, which can prevent the propagation of the vector longitudinal polarization, even in absence of Abelian gauge invariance. We investigate new spherically symmetric and slowly rotating solutions for these systems, including an arbitrary matter Lagrangian. We show that, under certain conditions, there always exist stealth configurations whose geometry coincides with solutions of Einstein gravity coupled with the additional matter. Such solutions have a non-trivial profile for the vector field, characterized by independent integration constants, which extends to asymptotic infinity. We interpret our findings in terms of the symmetries and features of the original vector-tensor action, and on the number of degrees of freedom that it propagates. The direct detection of gravitational waves opens new perspectives for measuring properties of gravitationally bound compact objects. It is then important to investigate black holes and neutron stars in alternative theories of gravity, since they can have features that make them observationally distinguishable from their General Relativity (GR) counterparts. In this work, we examine a special case of vector Galileons, a vector-tensor theory of gravity with interesting cosmological properties, which consists of a one parameter modification of the Einstein-Maxwell action. Within this theory, we study configurations describing asymptotically flat, spherically symmetric black holes and neutron stars. The set of black hole solutions in this theory is surprisingly rich, generalising results found in GR or in related scalar-tensor theories. We investigate the properties and conserved charges of black holes, using both analytical and numerical techniques, highlighting configurations that are more compact than in GR. We then study properties of neutron stars, showing how the vector profile can influence the star internal structure. Depending on properties of matter and fields inside the star, neutron stars can be more massive than in GR, and they can be even more compact than Schwarzschild black holes, making these objects observationally interesting. Working in the first order formalism of gravity, we propose an action that combines the self and anti-self-dual parts of the curvature and comprises all the diffeomorphism invariant Lagrangians that one can consider in this formalism. The action that we propose is motivated by (A)dS gauge theories of gravity. We use this action to derive the (2+1)-dimensional version of the Immirzi parameter. Our derivation relates explicitly the Immirzi parameter to the existence of two classically equivalent actions for the description of gravity in (2+1) dimensions, namely the standard and exotic actions introduced by Witten in the description of (2+1) gravity as a gauge theory. Degenerate scalar-tensor theories are recently proposed covariant theories of gravity coupled with a scalar field. Despite being characterised by higher order equations of motion, they do not propagate more than three degrees of freedom, thanks to the existence of constraints. We discuss a geometrical approach to degenerate scalar-tensor systems, and analyse its consequences. We show that some of these theories emerge as a certain limit of DBI Galileons. In absence of dynamical gravity, these systems correspond to scalar theories enjoying a symmetry which is different from Galileon invariance. The scalar theories have however problems concerning the propagation of fluctuations around a time dependent background. These issues can be tamed by breaking the symmetry by hand, or by minimally coupling the scalar with dynamical gravity in a way that leads to degenerate scalar-tensor systems. We show that distinct theories can be connected by a relation which generalizes Galileon duality, in certain cases also when gravity is dynamical. We discuss some implications of our results in concrete examples. Black hole configurations offer insights on the non-linear aspects of gravitational theories, and can suggest testable predictions for modifications of General Relativity. In this work, we examine exact black hole configurations in vector-tensor theories, originally proposed to explain dark energy by breaking the Abelian symmetry with a non-minimal coupling of the vector to gravity. We are able to evade the no-go theorems by Bekenstein on the existence of regular black holes in vector-tensor theories with Proca mass terms, and exhibit regular black hole solutions with a profile for the longitudinal vector polarization, characterised by an additional charge. We analytically find the most general static, spherically symmetric black hole solutions with and without a cosmological constant, and study in some detail their features, such as how the geometry depends on the vector charges. We also include angular momentum, and find solutions describing slowly-rotating black holes. Vortex solutions are topologically stable field configurations that can play an important role in condensed matter, field theory, and cosmology. We investigate vortex configuration in a 2+1 dimensional Abelian Higgs theory supplemented by higher order derivative self-interactions, related with Galileons. Our vortex solutions have features that make them qualitatively different from well-known Abrikosov-Nielsen-Olesen configurations, since the derivative interactions turn on gauge invariant field profiles that break axial symmetry. By promoting the system to a 3+1 dimensional string configuration, we study its gravitational backreaction. Our results are all derived within a specific, analytically manageable system, and might offer indications for understanding Galileonic interactions and screening mechanisms around configurations that are not spherically symmetric, but only at most cylindrically symmetric., Comment: 26 pages, 8 figures

In the context of a cubic Galileon model in which the Vainshtein mechanism suppresses the scalar field interactions with matter, we study low-density stars with slow rotation and static relativistic stars. We develop an expansion scheme to find approximated solutions inside the Vainshtein radius, and show that deviations from General Relativity (GR), while considering rotation, are also suppressed by the Vainshtein mechanism. In a quadratic coupling model, in which the scalarisation effect can significantly enhance deviations from GR in normal scalar tensor gravity, the Galileon term successfully suppresses the large deviations away from GR. Moreover, using a realistic equation of state, we construct solutions for a relativistic star, and show that deviations from GR are more suppressed for higher density objects. However, we found that the scalar field solution ceases to exist above a critical density, which roughly corresponds to the maximum mass of a neutron star.
