Abstract

The effect of Al doping on the magnetic properties of Zn(Cu)O based diluted magnetic semiconducting thin films is examined. The results have shown that carrier induced exchange is not directly responsible for the magnetic properties of these materials.

Abstract

The epitaxial growth and properties of Co and Cu codoped ZnO thin films deposited onto sapphire c-plane single crystals by using pulsed-laser deposition are studied. The presence of high oxygen vacancies in the films have allowed possible defect mediated mechanisms for mediating exchange coupling of the dopant ions resulting in room temperature ferromagnetism.

Abstract

Controlling spin wave excitations in magnetic materials underpins the burgeoning field of magnonics. Yet, little is known about how magnons interact with the conduction electrons of itinerant magnets, or how this interplay can be controlled. Via a surface-sensitive spectroscopic approach, we demonstrate a strong electron–magnon coupling at the Pd-terminated surface of the delafossite oxide PdCoO2, where a polar surface charge mediates a Stoner transition to itinerant surface ferromagnetism. We show how the coupling is enhanced sevenfold with increasing surface disorder, and concomitant charge carrier doping, becoming sufficiently strong to drive the system into a polaronic regime, accompanied by a significant quasiparticle mass enhancement. Our study thus sheds light on electron–magnon interactions in solid-state materials, and the ways in which these can be controlled. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

We report on the pulsed laser deposition of epitaxial FePt nanodots onto Si (100) substrates using TiN as a template buffer. X-ray diffraction studies show that the FePt nanodots are primarily oriented along the [001] direction and show L10 ordering with order parameter (S) equal to 0.75. The composition of the nanodots was determined by Rutherford backscattering and was found to be Fe41Pt59. Cross sectional transmission electron microscopy revealed the following epitaxial relationship: FePt (001)<001>|TiN (100)<001>|Si (100)<001>. Plan view transmission electron microscopy analysis showed that the FePt nanodots are well separated and have an average size of 18 nm. Selected area electron diffraction patterns along the <110> and <001> zone axes were analyzed to study the L10 order in the FePt nanodots. Room temperature magnetic hysteresis measurements showed that the islands are predominantly magnetized in the perpendicular direction with higher coercivity (Hc⊥=3200 Oe) as compared to the parallel direction (Hc∥=1000 Oe). Abstract

The groundwater arsenic contamination in Bangladesh is a phenomenon of surface ero- sion, transportation and deposition in the form of Delta and ∼lood Plain. While dealing with such geomorphological units like Tableland, Flood Plain, Delta and Hill Tract in Bangladesh, we have found the possibility of having huge arsenic contaminattion free groundwater reservoir in selected areas in Bangladesh. The results presented are the outcome of our last 5 years, field survey analysing for arsenic of water of twentyfive thousand eight hundred ninetyseven hand tubewells in sixtyfour districts of Bangladesh comprising four existing geomorphological regions (a) Deltaic region (including coastal region), (b) Flood Plain, (c) Tableland and (d) Hill Tract. In this report, we will highlight (1) the area in Bangladesh where groundwater is not arsenic contaminated and the' possibility to use shallow hand tubewells as potential groundwater resource for drinking purpose and (2) arsenic contaminations scenario of deep tubewells (above 100 meters) all over Bangladesh and suitable depth in arsenic contaminated area to get safe water.

Abstract

Careless handling of industrial wastes often creates problems for human health and the environment. Chronic arsenic toxicity, resulting from household use of arsenic-contaminated water occurred in 53 out of 79 members (67%) of 17 families residing in South Calcutta close to a factory that manufactured Paris-green (copper acetoarsenite). Clinical investigation of 20 of these affected persons showed typical skin pigmentation as well as palmar and plantar keratosis in all of them, while gastrointestinal symptoms, anaemia and signs of liver disease and peripheral neuropathy were seen in many. The water used by the affected families for drinking and cooking had been taken from shallow tubewells and had arsenic levels from 5.0 to 58 mg/l (WHO permissible limit, 0.05 mg/l). Other residents in the same area whose drinking-water came from deep tubewells or from tap water supplied by the Calcutta Municipal Corporation (arsenic levels, less than 0.05 mg/l) were not affected. The study confirms that arsenic in the shallow tubewells was due to the waste discharged by the factory producing Paris-green.
