Abstract

Epidemics are biological processes that appear suddenly as shocks. Societies attempt to negotiate such shocks through the interplay of classes, ethnicities, and institutions. In the process, does it create newer fault lines or consolidate the pre-existing ones existing within the socio-cultural and politico-economic structures? The article seeks to analyse this question. The anxiety generated by the COVID-19 pandemic and the abrupt change in lifestyles have agitated the human mind. This anxiousness 'within' is often found to be externalised socially, unfolding a search for the 'other' who can be associated with the virus and thereby stigmatised in the name of the accompanying disease. The 'other' thus becomes the social allegory of the biological moment. But, why do we need the 'other'? This article, moreover, also seeks to analyse these related questions by contextualising the historical experiences and then relating them with COVID-19 in the Indian scenario. It especially analyses how the pandemic influenced the everyday life experiences of those bearing Mongoloid phenotypes in India. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Globalisation has reconfigured the interplay of social and spatial relations on an unprecedented scale. Resultantly, it has problematised the issues related to citizenship as well. Rightlessness and statelessness have become an inseparable part of such an emerging milieu. It is further complicated as state-mandated markers of belonging, allegiance and place-making is thrust on it to redefine the nation. This chapter highlights such a process of a state-mediated attempt of redefining citizenry and its simultaneous poetic response in Assam by a community that has more than often been vilified and violated in the name of being doubtful citizens. The chapter traces the circumstances under which a slur that has been historically used to identify a community, Miya, was adorned and poetically used to negotiate the threats and onslaught of state-mandated citizenship practices. Through poetics, the community in desperation has been sought to be rechristened by a few poets. Miya poetry therefore became the harbinger of hope for a community that has persistently suffered from citizenship blues. The poetics, the politics and the polemics associated with such a historical process have been analysed here. The chapter deployed an innovative methodological approach by combining retrospective auto-ethnographies of the authors, in-depth life history interviews with six Miya poets and a pool of selected Miya poems.

35. Geopolitical Imperatives in the Eastern Himalayas: Situating the Hills of Darjeeling

Abstract

Scholarly discourses involving the peripheral regions often look through the binary lenses of ‘identity’ and ‘development’, which are then ascribed as the root causes, leading to the emergence of political movements in these regions. Analogies emanating from such visions entrapped solely on development deficit fall short in dealing with the interplay and intersections of history, geography and politics related to such regions. The analysis concerning the Gorkhaland Movement also seems to be trapped within such an explanatory binary of ‘identity’ and ‘development’. This article attempts to situate the hills of Darjeeling, where the movement is located, into a less discussed framework of geopolitics that not only politicizes the geographies of the Eastern Himalayas but also historicizes the communities and their aspirations as a response to the manoeuvrings by the concerned states. Within such a framework, we shall also discuss how the colonial geopolitics of migration, henceforth, has been succinctly carried forward by the post-colonial state in shaping its notions related to the hills of Darjeeling.
