Abstract

Principal points were first introduced by Flury: for a positive integer $n$, $n$ principal points of a random variable are the $n$ points that minimize the mean squared distance between the random variable and the nearest of the $n$ points. In this paper, we determine the $n$ principal points and the corresponding values of mean squared distance for different values of $n$ for some univariate absolutely continuous distributions.

22. Characterizations of Exponential Distribution Based on Two-Sided Random Shifts

Abstract

A new characterization of the exponential distribution is obtained. It is based on an equation involving randomly shifted (translated) order statistics. No specific distribution is assumed for the shift random variables. The proof uses a recently developed technique including the Maclaurin series expansion of the probability density of the parent variable.

Abstract

This communication reports the effect of DNA conformation on fluorescence resonance energy transfer (FRET) efficiency between two laser dyes in layer by layer (LbL) self assembled film. The dyes Acraflavine and Rhodamine B were attached onto the negative phosphate backbones of DNA in LbL film through electrostatic attraction. Then FRET between these dyes was investigated. Increase in pH or temperature causes the denaturation of DNA followed by coil formation of single stranded DNA. As a result the FRET efficiency also changed along with it. These observations demonstrated that by observing the change in FRET efficiency between two laser dyes in presence of DNA it is possible to detect the altered DNA conformation in the changed environment., Comment: 28 pages, 5 figures

Here we report the formation of fluorescent H aggregates of a cyanine dye Oxa18 in ultrathin film and its effect on energy transfer between Oxa18 and sRhb. Ideally H aggregate do not fluoresce. However, due to imperfect stacking of Oxa18 molecules in the aggregates, fluorescence occurred from Oxa18 H aggregates. This H aggregated band has substantial effect on the enhancement of energy transfer from Oxa18 to sRhb both in solution and in ultrathin film., Comment: 32 page, 7 figures

Abstract

Metformin, the primary therapy for type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM), showed limitations such as varying absorption, rapid system clearance, required large amount, resistance, longstanding side effects. Use of Nano formulations for pharmaceuticals is emerging as a viable technique to reduce negative consequences of drug, while simultaneously attaining precise release and targeted distribution. This study developed a Polyethylene Glycol conjugated Graphene Oxide Quantum dots (GOQD-PEG) nanocomposite for the sustained release of metformin. Herein, we evaluated the effectiveness of metformin-loaded nanoconjugate in in vitro insulin resistance model. Results demonstrated drug loaded nanoconjugate successfully restored glucose uptake and reversed insulin resistance in in vitro conditions at reduced dosage compared to free metformin. Abstract

Background: The Rh system is an extremely important RBC antigen system with over 50 antigens, 5 of which (D, C, E, c and e) are considered most clinically significant. The rare Rhnull phenotype can result from mutations in the RHD and RHCE genes or the RHAG gene that affects their expression. This is a case report of the second type. Case Report: This case reports a multiparous lady who had to be evaluated for a panreactive antibody. The discrepancy was first identified at the centre she reported to. A thorough immunohematological workup was performed at a second reference laboratory. Suspecting Rhnull phenotype, a third referral (molecular typing) was requested at International Blood Group Reference Laboratory (IBGRL), Bristol. Results: A novel RHAG null allele (c.1138+2t>a), causing a Rhnull phenotype was identified. The antibody was most likely an anti‐Rh 29 antibody. Conclusion: The novel c.1138+2 t > a mutation in the RHAG gene causing the Rhnull phenotype and development of a pan reacting antibody(ies) made the patient's pregnancy challenging. Confirmation of the diagnosis, an important step in her management, required use of both serological immunohematology and molecular techniques. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
