We have used a combination of linear response time-domain THz spectroscopy (TDTS) and high-field non-linear THz spectroscopy to separately probe the electronic momentum and energy relaxation rates respectively of the Dirac semimetal Cd$_3$As$_2$. We find, consistent with prior measurements, that Cd$_3$As$_2$ has an enormous nonlinearities in the THz frequency range. We extract the momentum relaxation rate of Cd$_3$As$_2$ using Drude fits to the optical conductivity. We also conduct THz range 2D coherent spectroscopy. The dominant response is a pump-probe signal, which allow us to separately extract the energy relaxation rate. We find that the rate of energy relaxation decreases down to the lowest measured temperatures. We connect this to Cd$_3$As$_2$ anomalous lattice dynamics, evidence for which is found in its low thermal conductivity and soft phonons in Raman scattering. The lack of a peak in the energy relaxation rate as a function of T can be connected to the linear in T dependence of the current relaxation e.g. the phonon scattering is elastic down to the lowest measured temperatures approximately 120 K., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures, revised version to appear in PRB

${\lambda}$-RhO$_2$, a prototype 4d transition metal oxide, has been prepared by oxidative delithiation of spinel LiRh$_2$O$_4$ using ceric ammonium nitrate. Average-structure studies of this RhO$_2$ polytype, including synchrotron powder X-ray diffraction and electron diffraction, indicate the room temperature structure to be tetragonal, in the space group I41/amd, with a first-order structural transition to cubic Fd-3m at T = 345 K on warming. Synchrotron X-ray pair distribution function analysis and $^7$Li solid state nuclear magnetic resonance measurements suggest that the room temperature structure displays local Rh-Rh bonding. The formation of these local dimers appears to be associated with a metal-to insulator transition with a non-magnetic ground state, as also supported by density functional theory-based electronic structure calculations. This contribution demonstrates the power of soft chemistry to kinetically stabilize a surprisingly simple binary oxide compound.

We present and characterize a new member of the $R$Cd$_3$P$_3$ ($R$= rare earth) family of materials, NdCd$_3$P$_3$, which possesses Nd$^{3+}$ cations arranged on well-separated triangular lattice layers. Magnetic susceptibility and heat capacity measurements demonstrate a likely $S_{\mathrm{eff}}$ = 1/2 ground state, and also reveal the formation of long-range antiferromagnetic order at $T_{N} = 0.34$ K. Via measurements of magnetization, heat capacity, and electrical resistivity, we characterize the electronic properties of NdCd$_3$P$_3$ and compare results to density functional theory calculations., Comment: Accepted for publication at Physical Review Materials

Studying superconductivity in Dirac semimetals is an important step in understanding quantum matter with topologically non-trivial order parameters. We report on the properties of the superconducting phase in single crystals of the Dirac material LaCuSb2 prepared by the self-flux method. We find that chemical and hydrostatic pressure drastically suppress the superconducting transition. Furthermore, due to large Fermi surface anisotropy, magnetization and muon spin relaxation measurements reveal Type-II superconductivity for applied magnetic fields along the $a$-axis, and Type-I superconductivity for fields along the $c$-axis. Specific heat confirms the bulk nature of the transition, and its deviation from single-gap $s$-wave BCS theory suggests multigap superconductivity. Our tight-binding model points to an anisotropic gap function arising from the spin-orbital texture near the Dirac nodes, providing an explanation for the appearance of an anomaly in specific heat well below $T_c$. Recent interest in honeycomb lattice materials has focused on their potential to host quantum spin liquid (QSL) states. Variations in bond angles and spin allow a range of interesting behaviors on this lattice, from the predicted QSL ground state of the Kitaev model to exotic magnetic orders. Here we report the physical properties of two compounds with rare earths on an approximate honeycomb lattice. The isostructural compounds Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = $\frac{9}{2}$) and Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn (J = 4) permit a direct comparison of half-integer versus integer spins on this lattice. We find strikingly different magnetic properties for the two compounds. Nd$_2$S$_5$Sn orders antiferromagnetically at T$_N$ $\approx$ 2.5 K, and undergoes several magnetic transitions to other ordered states under applied field. Pr$_2$S$_5$Sn displays no magnetic ordering transition above T = 0.41 K, and may be proximate to a spin liquid state., Comment: 8 pages, 9 figures

We investigate the roles of disorder on low-temperature transport in SmB$_6$ crystals grown by both the Al flux and floating zone methods. We used the inverted resistance method with Corbino geometry to investigate whether low-temperature variations in the standard resistance plateau arises from a surface or a bulk channel in floating zone samples. The results show significant sample-dependent residual bulk conduction, in contrast to smaller amounts of residual bulk conduction previously observed in Al flux grown samples with Sm vacancies. We consider hopping in an activated impurity band as a possible source for the observed bulk conduction, but it is unlikely that the large residual bulk conduction seen in floating zone samples is solely due to Sm vacancies. We therefore propose that one-dimensional defects, or dislocations, contribute as well. Using chemical etching, we find evidence for dislocations in both flux and floating zone samples, with higher dislocation density in floating zone samples than in Al flux grown samples. Samarium hexaboride is an anomaly, having many exotic and seemingly mutually incompatible properties. It was proposed to be a mixed-valent semiconductor, and later - a topological Kondo insulator, and yet has a Fermi surface despite being an insulator. We propose a new and unified understanding of SmB$_6$ centered on the hitherto unrecognized dynamical bonding effect: the coexistence of two Sm-B bonding modes within SmB$_6$, corresponding to different oxidation states of the Sm. The mixed valency arises in SmB$_6$ from thermal population of these distinct minima enabled by motion of B. Our model simultaneously explains the thermal valence fluctuations, appearance of magnetic Fermi surface, excess entropy at low temperatures, pressure-induced phase transitions, and related features in Raman spectra and their unexpected dependence on temperature and boron isotope.

Long known to have thermodynamic properties at odds with its insulating electrical transport, SmB6 has been the subject of great debate as it is unclear whether its unusual properties are related to the bulk or novel metallic surface states. We have observed a bulk moment-screening effect in nominally pure and Gd-doped SmB6 via heat capacity, magnetization, and resistivity measurements, and show this new Kondo-impurity like effect provides an unexpected but intuitive explanation for metal-like phenomena stemming from the strongly interacting host system. This affords a coherent understanding for decades of mysteries in strongly-correlated insulators, reveals the expanded utility of techniques previously only utilized for metals, and presents the novel effect of even highly-dilute impurities in strongly correlated insulators.
