Abstract

Seventy five percent of the world's food crops benefit from insect pollination. Hence, there has been increased interest in how global change drivers impact this critical ecosystem service. Because standardized data on crop pollination are rarely available, we are limited in our capacity to understand the variation in pollination benefits to crop yield, as well as to anticipate changes in this service, develop predictions, and inform management actions. Here, we present CropPol, a dynamic, open, and global database on crop pollination. It contains measurements recorded from 202 crop studies, covering 3,394 field observations, 2,552 yield measurements (i.e., berry mass, number of fruits, and fruit density [kg/ha], among others), and 47,752 insect records from 48 commercial crops distributed around the globe. CropPol comprises 32 of the 87 leading global crops and commodities that are pollinator dependent. Malus domestica is the most represented crop (32 studies), followed by Brassica napus (22 studies), Vaccinium corymbosum (13 studies), and Citrullus lanatus (12 studies). The most abundant pollinator guilds recorded are honey bees (34.22% counts), bumblebees (19.19%), flies other than Syrphidae and Bombyliidae (13.18%), other wild bees (13.13%), beetles (10.97%), Syrphidae (4.87%), and Bombyliidae (0.05%). Locations comprise 34 countries distributed among Europe (76 studies), North America (60), Latin America and the Caribbean (29), Asia (20), Oceania (10), and Africa (7). Sampling spans three decades and is concentrated on 2001–2005 (21 studies), 2006–2010 (40), 2011–2015 (88), and 2016–2020 (50). This is the most comprehensive open global data set on measurements of crop flower visitors, crop pollinators and pollination to date, and we encourage researchers to add more datasets to this database in the future. 5. Temporal-vertical heterogeneity of floral resources and their effects on the bee community

Abstract

Flowering phenodynamics and stratification are vegetation attributes that are rarely studied in combination, but together they contribute to the maintenance of species diversity by helping to understand the effects of temporal-vertical heterogeneity of resources on species coexistence. Floral resources are the main regulating factor of bee populations and diversity, but their understanding from the perspective of temporal-vertical heterogeneity and the responses of bees to this variation are still limited. This knowledge will assist in bee conservation actions through guiding vegetation management practices that favor phenological complementarity within and between habitats, thus maintaining the taxonomic and functional diversity of bees. For this purpose, during a period of 18 months, I monthly collected data on f the flowering phenodynamics of the herbaceous and shrub/tree strata in the plant community and on the diversity of bees in each stratum in three 0.5 ha plots established in three fragments of Caatinga, semi-arid region of Brazil. The analysis of the plant community in these plots was carried out by life forms and growth forms and their phenodynamics was related to water availability and photoperiod. For bee sampling, I used three methods: pan traps distributed at different heights (0.3m, 1.6m, 4.0m), large blue bucket and entomological net. From these samples, I characterized the bee community and its temporal variation. Also, I analyzed the importance of the vertical dimension in the optimization of bee sampling with pan traps, the main recommended method for monitoring populations and diversity of bees. To understand the effects of temporalvertical availability of floral resources on the performance of bee sampling methods and on species coexistence, I analyzed different community attributes: abundance, richness, taxonomic diversity, functional diversity, taxonomic and functional beta diversity. About 80% of the plant species recorded in both strata of vegetation constitute an important source of floral resources for bees. During the study, bees experienced different periods of floral resources availability, which derived from the different responses of life forms and growth forms to environmental conditions. The plant community presents intra and interspecific temporal differences in flowering phenodynamics, providing a continuous supply of resources throughout the year, including in the dry season, when almost all species lose their leaves. However, there are months in which resources are available only in the woody layer, only in the herbaceous layer, in both strata during the rainy season, in both strata during the dryperiod, and without resources in both strata in the dry period. The increase in the floral resources availability with the simultaneous flowering of woody and herbaceous layer affected the performance of the pan traps by decreasing the abundance and richness captured with this method. However, the elevated pan traps captured species not detected by the lower pan traps or by other methods. Therefore, with the elevation of the pan traps, it was possible to capture bees that forage at a specific height, which allowed a better characterization of the bee community and to obtain evidence of the influence of the temporal-vertical heterogeneity of floral resources in the coexistence of bees. I demonstrated that the different periods of floral resources availability matter for the maintenance of the diversity of bees in the Caatinga. This heterogeneity creates temporal niches that favors bees foraging at specific heights, especially at the beginning of the dry season when floral resources are still stratified, allowing the increase of species diversity. In this period, there are still abundant resources in the herbaceous layer, mass flowering of woody plants and climatic conditions that facilitate the foraging of a greater number of bee species. In short, this thesis demonstrated that understanding the vertical dimension of floral resources availability for bees is crucial to optimize the sampling and conservation of such important pollinators in environments with stratified vegetation. The thesis was structured in five sections: 1) Introduction / theoretical review of the thesis’ theme, presenting the justification for the importance of vertical-temporal heterogeneity of floral resources, particularly in relation to the characterization of bee communities and the understanding of coexistence mechanisms of bees in semiarid environments, 2) Description of the flowering phenodynamics of the plant community by life forms and growth forms and their phenological complementarity to provide floral resources for bees, 3) Analysis of bee sampling performance when using pan traps vertically distributed in the vegetation and the influence of the temporal-vertical availability of floral resources on this performance, 4) Using data from sections 2 and 3, I investigate the central question of the thesis: what is the influence of temporal-vertical availability of the floral resources on the coexistence and organization of the bee community? and 5) Synthesis and general conclusion of the thesis and its potential to effectively strengthen bee conservation actions. A fenodinâmica da floração e a estratificação são atributos da vegetação que raramente são estudados em combinação, mas em conjunto contribuem para a manutenção da diversidade de espécies ao auxiliarem na compreensão dos efeitos da heterogeneidade temporal-vertical de recursos na coexistência de espécies. Os recursos florais são o principal fator regulador das populações e diversidade de abelhas, porém o entendimento deles sob a perspectiva de heterogeneidade temporal-vertical e as respostas das abelhas a essa variação ainda é limitado. Esse conhecimento tem o poder de auxiliar nas ações de conservação de abelhas a partir da orientação de formas de manejo da vegetação que favoreçam a complementaridade fenológica dentro e entre habitats, mantendo assim a diversidade taxonômica e funcional de abelhas. Para tal fim, nesta tese foram coletados dados da fenodinâmica mensal da comunidade de plantas dos estratos herbáceo e arbustivo/arbóreo e da diversidade de abelhas em cada estrato, por um período de 18 meses, em três parcelas de 0.5ha estabelecidas em três fragmentos de Caatinga, região semiárida do Brasil. A análise da comunidade de plantas nas parcelas foi realizada por formas de vida e formas de crescimento e a fenodinâmica foi relacionada à disponibilidade hídrica e ao fotoperíodo. Para amostragem de abelhas, foram realizadas capturas com três métodos: pan traps distribuídos a diferentes alturas (0.3m, 1.6m, 4.0m), balde azul grande e rede entomológica. A partir dessas amostragens, a comunidade de abelhas e sua variação temporal foram caracterizadas. Também foi analisada a importância da dimensão vertical na otimização da amostragem de abelhas com pan traps, principal método recomendado para monitoramento de populações e diversidade de abelhas. Para o entendimento dos efeitos da disponibilidade temporal-vertical de recursos florais sobre o desempenho dos métodos de amostragem de abelhas e sobre coexistência de espécies, foram utilizados diferentes atributos da comunidade: abundância, riqueza, diversidade taxonômica, diversidade funcional, diversidade beta taxonômica e funcional. Cerca de 80% das espécies registradas em ambos os estratos da vegetação constituem fonte importante de recursos florais para as abelhas. Durante o estudo, as abelhas experimentaram diferentes períodos de disponibilidade de recursos florais, os quais derivaram das respostas diferenciadas das formas de vida e formas de crescimento às condições ambientais. A comunidade vegetal apresenta diferenças temporais intra e interespecíficas na fenodinâmica floral proporcionando oferta de recursos ao longo do ano a escala de paisagem, inclusive no período de seca, quando quase todas as espécies perdem as folhas. Entretanto, a oferta varia localmente de modo que há meses nos quais os recursos estão presentes apenas no estrato lenhoso, apenas no estrato herbáceo, nos dois estratos durante o período chuvoso, nos dois estratos durante o período seco, e sem recursos em ambos os estratos no período seco. O incremento na disponibilidade de recursos florais com a floração simultânea do estrato lenhoso e herbáceo, afetou o desempenho dos pan traps, diminuindo a abundância e riqueza capturada com esse método. No entanto, os pan traps elevados capturaram espécies não detectadas pelos pan traps de alturas inferiores e nem por outros métodos. Portanto, com a elevação dos pan traps foi possível capturar abelhas que forrageiam a uma altura específica, o que permitiu uma melhor caracterização da comunidade de abelhas e obteve-se evidências da influência da heterogeneidade temporal-vertical de recursos florais na coexistência de abelhas. Foi demonstrado que os diferentes períodos de disponibilidade de recursos florais importam para a manutenção da diversidade de abelhas na Caatinga, uma vez que contribuem para a criação de nichos temporais de forrageio de espécies em alturas específicas, sendo fundamentais para o incremento da diversidade de espécies, especialmente quando há oferta estratificada de recursos florais como no início do período seco. Nesse período ainda há recursos abundantes no estrato herbáceo, floração massiva de lenhosas e as condições climáticas facilitam o forrageio de um maior número de espécies. Em suma, com esta tese ficou demonstrado que entender a dimensão vertical na disponibilidade de recursos florais para abelhas é crucial para otimizar a amostragem e a conservação de tão importantes polinizadores em ambientes com vegetação estratificada. A tese foi estruturada em 5 seções: 1) Introdução/revisão teórica sobre o tema da tese, com a justificativa da importância do estudo da heterogeneidade vertical-temporal de recursos florais, particularmente com relação à caracterização de comunidades de abelhas e o entendimento de mecanismos de coexistência de abelhas em ambientes semiáridos, 2) Descrição da fenodinâmica vertical-temporal de recursos florais a partir da análise da comunidade vegetal por formas de vida e formas de crescimento e sua complementaridade fenológica na provisão de recursos florais para abelhas, 3) Análise do desempenho da amostragem de abelhas por meio de pan traps distribuídos verticalmente na vegetação e da influência da disponibilidade temporal-vertical de recursos florais nesse desempenho, 4) Utilização dos dados gerados nas seções 2 e 3 para investigar a pergunta central da tese sobre a influência da disponibilidade vertical-temporal de recursos florais na coexistência e organização da comunidade de abelhas e 5) Síntese e conclusões gerais da tese e seu potencial para fortalecer efetivamente as ações de conservação de abelhas.

Abstract

El agraz (Vaccinium meridionale, Ericaceae), es un cultivo promisorio en la zona altoandina de Colombia, sin embargo no se conocen muchos aspectos relacionados con su polinización, lo cual es fundamental para su manejo porque así se podrá propagar de manera óptima en las diferentes regiones. El objetivo de este trabajo fue evaluar la importancia de la polinización por abejas en la reproducción del agraz, para lo cual se realizaron experimentos de biología floral, biología reproductiva, eficiencia de polinización y se evaluó el efecto de la presencia de colmenas de Apis mellifera sobre la fructificación del agraz. El estudio se realizó con poblaciones silvestres de agraz en la Cordillera Oriental. Se encontró que el agraz presenta un sistema reproductivo mixto, produce frutos por agamospermia, autogamia y entrecruzamiento. No obstante, la especie busca promover el entrecruzamiento, dado que presentó rasgos florales para atraer un amplio grupo de polinizadores (anteras poricidas con fácil liberación de polen, sesgo en la producción de néctar hacia la función femenina, gran despliegue floral, larga longevidad floral) y una fuerte depresión por endogamia. Apis mellifera y las diferentes castas (obrera, macho y reina) de Bombus hortulanus son polinizadores eficientes del agraz y la presencia de colmenas no aumentó la producción de frutos pero si contribuyó a aumentar la retención de frutos por polinización cruzada. Las abejas son fundamentales para el manejo del agraz tanto en términos de conservación como producción porque a través de la polinización cruzada pueden contribuir al mantenimiento de la variabilidad genética de las poblaciones y a que obtengan una buena producción frutos, la cual puede disminuir si hay altas tasas de autogamia. Abstract. Vaccinium meridionale (Ericaceae), known as “agraz” is a promising crop in the Andean highlands of Colombia. However, the information about its pollination biology is scarce, which is essential for an optimal breeding program. The aim of this study was to evaluate the importance of bee pollination on reproduction of V. meridionale. For this, we did experiments of floral biology, reproductive biology, pollination efficiency and evaluate the effect of Apis mellifera hives on fruit set. The study was conducted with wild populations of V. meridionale in the Eastern Andes of Colombia. Vaccinium meridionale have a mixed reproductive system, produces fruits per agamospermy, selfing and outcrossing. However, the species promote outcrossing, since it has floral traits to attract a large group of pollinators (poricidal anthers with easy pollen release, female-biased nectar production, large floral display, long floral longevity) and show a strong inbreeding depression. Apis mellifera and the different castes (worker, male and queen) of Bombus hortulanus are efficient pollinators of V. meridionale and the presence of beehives not increase fruit-set but enhance fruit set by outcrossing. Cross-pollination by bees are essential for breeding of V. meridionale in terms of both conservation and production because may contribute to the maintenance of genetic variability of populations and good fruit production, which may decrease with high selfing rates.
