We argue that Content-based filtering (CBF) and Graph-based methods (GB) complement one another in Academic Search recommendations. The scientific literature can be viewed as a conversation between authors and the audience. CBF uses abstracts to infer authors' positions, and GB uses citations to infer responses from the audience. In this paper, we describe nine differences between CBF and GB, as well as synergistic opportunities for hybrid combinations. Two embeddings will be used to illustrate these opportunities: (1) Specter, a CBF method based on BERT-like deepnet encodings of abstracts, and (2) ProNE, a GB method based on spectral clustering of more than 200M papers and 2B citations from Semantic Scholar.

Cascading failures represent a fundamental threat to the integrity of complex systems, often precipitating a comprehensive collapse across diverse infrastructures and financial networks. This research articulates a robust and pragmatic approach designed to attenuate the risk of such failures within complex networks, emphasizing the pivotal role of local network topology. The core of our strategy is an innovative algorithm that systematically identifies a subset of critical nodes within the network, a subset whose relative size is substantial in the context of the network's entirety. Enhancing this algorithm, we employ a graph coloring heuristic to precisely isolate nodes of paramount importance, thereby minimizing the subset size while maximizing strategic value. Securing these nodes significantly bolsters network resilience against cascading failures. The method proposed to identify critical nodes and experimental results show that the proposed technique outperforms other typical techniques in identifying critical nodes. We substantiate the superiority of our approach through comparative analyses with existing mitigation strategies and evaluate its performance across various network configurations and failure scenarios. Empirical validation is provided via the application of our method to real-world networks, confirming its potential as a strategic tool in enhancing network robustness.

Field robotics applications, such as search and rescue, involve robots operating in large, unknown areas. These environments present unique challenges that compound the difficulties faced by a robot operator. The use of multi-robot teams, assisted by carefully designed autonomy, help reduce operator workload and allow the operator to effectively coordinate robot capabilities. In this work, we present a system architecture designed to optimize both robot autonomy and the operator experience in multi-robot scenarios. Drawing on lessons learned from our team's participation in the DARPA SubT Challenge, our architecture emphasizes modularity and interoperability. We empower the operator by allowing for adjustable levels of autonomy ("sliding mode autonomy"). We enhance the operator experience by using intuitive, adaptive interfaces that suggest context-aware actions to simplify control. In this position paper, we explore the power of storytelling and its connection to place through the use of Augmented Reality (AR) technology, particularly within the context of Th\'amien Ohlone history on the Santa Clara University campus. To do this, we utilized SLAM and 8th Wall to create virtual, location-based experiences that geolocate tribal stories at present-day sites, showcase the living culture of the Th\'amien Ohlone tribe, and advocate for physical markers that could exist to recognize their story. When doing so, we made sure to select locations that added to the story each stop tells to serve as our anchors. We consider a modified damped version of H\'enon-Heiles system and investigate its integrability. By extending the Painlev\'e analysis of ordinary differential equations we find that the modified H\'enon-Heiles system possesses the Painlev\'e property for three distinct parametric restrictions. For each of the identified cases, we construct two independent integrals of motion using the well known Prelle-Singer method. We then derive a set of nontrivial non-point symmetries for each of the identified integrable cases of the modified H\'enon-Heiles system. We infer that the modified H\'enon-Heiles system is integrable for three distinct parametric restrictions. In this study, we leverage SCADA data from diverse wind turbines to predict power output, employing advanced time series methods, specifically Functional Neural Networks (FNN) and Long Short-Term Memory (LSTM) networks. A key innovation lies in the ensemble of FNN and LSTM models, capitalizing on their collective learning. This ensemble approach outperforms individual models, ensuring stable and accurate power output predictions. Additionally, machine learning techniques are applied to detect wind turbine performance deterioration, enabling proactive maintenance strategies and health assessment. Crucially, our analysis reveals the uniqueness of each wind turbine, necessitating tailored models for optimal predictions. These insight underscores the importance of providing automatized customization for different turbines to keep human modeling effort low. Recent developments in the field of diffusion models have demonstrated an exceptional capacity to generate high-quality prompt-conditioned image edits. Nevertheless, previous approaches have primarily relied on textual prompts for image editing, which tend to be less effective when making precise edits to specific objects or fine-grained regions within a scene containing single/multiple objects. We introduce a novel framework for zero-shot localized multi-object editing through a multi-diffusion process to overcome this challenge. This framework empowers users to perform various operations on objects within an image, such as adding, replacing, or editing $\textbf{many}$ objects in a complex scene $\textbf{in one pass}$. Our approach leverages foreground masks and corresponding simple text prompts that exert localized influences on the target regions resulting in high-fidelity image editing. A combination of cross-attention and background preservation losses within the latent space ensures that the characteristics of the object being edited are preserved while simultaneously achieving a high-quality, seamless reconstruction of the background with fewer artifacts compared to the current methods. We also curate and release a dataset dedicated to multi-object editing, named $\texttt{LoMOE}$-Bench. In the domain of mechanophotonics, achieving real-time applicability of organic crystals in visible light communication (VLC) technologies necessitates affordable light-emitting diodes (LEDs) as sources of light to run photonic devices through sustainable methods. Here in, we demonstrate an efficient strategy to excite (Z)-3-(3',5'-bis(trifluoromethyl)-[1,1'-biphenyl]-4-yl)-2-(4-methoxyphenyl) acrylonitrile (CF3OMe), 9,10-bis(phenylethynyl)anthracene (BPEA) and 2,2'-((1E,1'E)-hydrazine-1,2-diylidenebis(methaneylylidene))diphenol (SAA) flexible crystal waveguides utilizing UV LED source and transduce respective blue, orange and yellow fluorescence signals. The capability of the focused LED lies in its ability to (i) energize mechanically bent crystals at an angle of 180{\deg}, (ii) evanescently excite the FL of a SAA waveguide using the FL of CF3OMe waveguide through energy transfer, and (iii) excite and split different signals in a 2X2 hybrid directional coupler based on SSA-BPEA crystals. An unprecedented organic Fermat spiral optical waveguide (FSOW) self transducing green fluorescence is fabricated using a pseudo-plastic (E)-1-(((5-bromopyridin-2-yl)imino)methyl)naphthalene-2-ol crystal. A 1.618-millimeter-long crystal is initially bent into a hairpin-like bent waveguide. Later, a meticulous mechanophotonic strategy is employed to sculpt the hairpin-like bent waveguide into the Fermat spiral geometry, covering a compact area of 330x238 um2. The optical signal in FSOW survives two sharp 180-degree turns to produce optical output. The remarkably low bending-induced optical loss in FSOW can be ascribed to the smooth-defect-free surface morphology of the crystal. Protein phosphorylation involves the reversible modification of a protein (substrate) residue by another protein (kinase). Liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry studies are rapidly generating massive protein phosphorylation datasets across multiple conditions. Researchers then must infer kinases responsible for changes in phosphosites of each substrate. However, tools that infer kinase-substrate interactions (KSIs) are not optimized to interactively explore the resulting large and complex networks, significant phosphosites, and states. There is thus an unmet need for a tool that facilitates user-friendly analysis, interactive exploration, visualization, and communication of phosphoproteomics datasets. We present PhosNetVis, a web-based tool for researchers of all computational skill levels to easily infer, generate and interactively explore KSI networks in 2D or 3D by streamlining phosphoproteomics data analysis steps within a single tool. PhostNetVis lowers barriers for researchers in rapidly generating high-quality visualizations to gain biological insights from their phosphoproteomics datasets. BLVRUN is a command line shell script designed to offer developers within the BLV community a succinct and insightful overview of traceback errors. Its primary function involves parsing errors and utilizing a refined large language model to generate informative error summaries. In terms of performance, our model rivals that of well-known models like ChatGPT or AI-chatbot plug-ins tailored for specific Integrated Development Environments (IDEs). Importantly, BLV users can seamlessly integrate this tool into their existing development workflows, eliminating the need for any modifications or adaptations to facilitate debugging tasks.

Phase transitions are crucial in shaping the collective dynamics of a broad spectrum of natural systems across disciplines. Here, we report two distinct heterogeneous nucleation facilitating single-step and multi-step phase transitions to global synchronization in a finite-size adaptive network due to the trade-off between time scale adaptation and coupling strength disparities. Specifically, small intracluster nucleations coalesce either at the population interface or within the populations resulting in the two distinct phase transitions depending on the degree of the disparities. We find that the coupling strength disparity largely controls the nature of phase transition in the phase diagram irrespective of the adaptation disparity. We provide a mesoscopic description for the cluster dynamics using the collective coordinates approach that brilliantly captures the multicluster dynamics among the populations leading to distinct phase transitions. Further, we also deduce the upper bound for the coupling strength for the existence of two intraclusters explicitly in terms of adaptation and coupling strength disparities. These insights may have implications across domains ranging from neurological disorders to segregation dynamics in social networks.

We investigate the influence of field-like torque and the direction of the external magnetic field on a one-dimensional array of serially connected spin-torque nano oscillators, having free layers with perpendicular anisotropy, to achieve complete synchronization between them by analyzing the associated Landau-Lifshitz-Gilbert-Slonczewski equation. The obtained results for synchronization are discussed for the cases of 2, 10 and 100 oscillators separately. The roles of the field-like torque and the direction of the external field on the synchronization of the STNOs are explored through the Kuramoto order parameter. While the field-like torque alone is sufficient to bring out global synchronization in the system made up of a small number of STNOs, the direction of the external field is also needed to be slightly tuned to synchronize the one-dimensional array of a large number of STNOs. The formation of complete synchronization through the construction of clusters within the system is identified for the 100 oscillators. The large amplitude synchronized oscillations are obtained for small to large numbers of oscillators. Moreover, the tunability in frequency for a wide range of currents is shown for the synchronized oscillations up to 100 spin-torque oscillators. In addition to achieving synchronization, the field-like torque increases the frequency of the synchronized oscillations. The transverse Lyapunov exponents are deduced to confirm the stable synchronization in coupled STNOs due to the field-like torque and to validate the results obtained in the numerical simulations. Public utilities are faced with situations where high winds can bring trees and debris into contact with energized power lines and other equipments, which could ignite wildfires. As a result, they need to turn off power during severe weather to help prevent wildfires. This is called Public Safety Power Shutoff (PSPS). We present a method for load reduction using a multi-step genetic algorithm for Public Safety Power Shutoff events. The proposed method optimizes load shedding using partial load shedding based on load importance (critical loads like hospitals, fire stations, etc). The multi-step genetic algorithm optimizes load shedding while minimizing the impact on important loads and preserving grid stability. The effectiveness of the method is demonstrated through network examples. The results show that the proposed method achieves minimal load shedding while maintaining the critical loads at acceptable levels.
