Search

Measuring a pulsar's rotational evolution is crucial to understanding the nature of the pulsar. Here we provide updated timing models for the rotational evolution of six pulsars, five of which are rotation phase-connected using primarily NICER X-ray data. For the newly-discovered fast energetic young pulsar, PSR J0058-7218, we increase the baseline of its timing model from 1.4 days to 8 months and not only measure more precisely its spin-down rate nudot = (-6.2324+/-0.0001)x10^-11 Hz s^-1 but also for the first time the second time derivative of spin rate nuddot = (4.2+/-0.2)x10^-21 Hz s^-2. For the fastest and most energetic young pulsar, PSR J0537-6910 (with 16 ms spin period), we detect 4 more glitches, for a total of 15 glitches over 4.5 years of NICER monitoring, and show that its spin-down behavior continues to set this pulsar apart from all others, including a long-term braking index n = -1.234+/-0.009 and interglitch braking indices that asymptote to, 18 pages, 17 figures; accepted for publication in ApJ; very minor edits and no changes to numbers

Modern galaxy evolution theories predict a large fraction of ordinary matter to be distributed in the form of gas over the largest galactic scales, with most of the gas mass encompassing the peak and high tail of the overall temperature distribution1. Satellite galaxies however, may lose a large amount of this extended gas due to stripping and ram pressure generated by their in-fall onto a larger system2. The presence of highly ionized gas associated with the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds has been recently confirmed through indirect probes3,4. Using eROSITA/SRG data, in this work we show the first direct images of the X-ray emission from the hottest gas associated to the circum-galactic medium surrounding the Magellanic Clouds. We discover an extended hot gas phase at ~2.3×106 K. This temperature challenges the theoretical expectations from a virialized system5,6 implying that heating mechanisms are at play in the Magellanic Clouds circum-galactic medium. We also discover a strong perturbation that we identify as a cold front in the (Galactic) South direction of the Magellanic Clouds, morphologically connected to them both. The cold front -the first ever discovered at galactic scales (~10 kpc)- also appears to be coincident with enhanced polarization at radio frequencies, as well as with a tangential alignment of the magnetic field lines. The detected discontinuity in the properties of the gas surrounding the Magellanic Clouds is consistent with a gas reservoir being perturbed by the three-body interaction between the Magellanic Clouds and the Milky Way7,8. The Magellanic Clouds provide a unique laboratory for assessing the presence of a hot gas phase in in-falling satellite systems9. The detection of a still large reservoir of hot gas, together with the detection of a front connected with thermal heating and magnetic amplification corroborates and inform galaxy evolution theories10.

Winds of massive stars are suspected to be inhomogeneous (or clumpy), which biases the measures of their mass loss rates. In High Mass X-ray Binaries (HMXBs), the compact object can be used as an orbiting X-ray point source to probe the wind and constrain its clumpiness. We perform spectro-timing analysis of the HMXB OAO 1657-415 with non-simultaneous NuSTAR and NICER observations. We compute the hardness ratio from the energy-resolved light curves, and using an adaptive rebinning technique, we thus select appropriate time segments to search for rapid spectral variations on timescales of a few hundreds to thousands of seconds. Column density and intensity of Iron K$\alpha$ line were strongly correlated, and the recorded spectral variations were consistent with accretion from a clumpy wind. We also illustrate a novel framework to measure clump sizes, masses in HMXBs more accurately based on absorption measurements and orbital parameters of the source. We then discuss the limitations posed by current X-ray spacecrafts in such measurements and present prospects with future X-ray missions. We find that the source pulse profiles show a moderate dependence on energy. We identify a previously undetected dip in the pulse profile visible throughout the NuSTAR observation near spin phase 0.15 possibly caused by intrinsic changes in accretion geometry close to the neutron star. We report here on the discovery with XMM–Newton of pulsations at 22 ms from the central compact source associated with IKT 16, a supernova remnant in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). The measured spin period and spin period derivative correspond to 21.7661076(2) ms and 2.9(3) × 10−14 s s−1, respectively. Assuming standard spin-down by magnetic dipole radiation, the spin-down power corresponds to 1.1 × 1038 erg s−1 implying a Crab-like pulsar. This makes it the most energetic pulsar discovered in the SMC so far and a close analogue of PSR J0537–6910, a Crab-like pulsar in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The characteristic age of the pulsar is 12 kyr. Having for the first time a period measure for this source, we also searched for the signal in archival data collected in radio with the Parkes telescope and in γ-rays with the Fermi/LAT, but no evidence for pulsation was found in these energy bands.

We present a broadband spectral analysis of accreting neutron stars using data from XIS and PIN onboard \emph{Suzaku}. From spectral fits of these sources with a single continuum model including a powerlaw and high energy cut-off, cyclotron lines (where required), we studied the correlation between various spectral parameters. Among 39 sources we studied, 16 are those where the existence of a cyclotron line is known in literature, and 29 need a cutoff energy. Among these 29 sources, 18 have cutoff energy bunched in a range of 3-10 keV while for 11 sources, it spreads over 12-25 keV. This bi-modal behaviour is not based on the specific nature of the systems being a Be XRB or supergiant HMXB, nor on different beaming patterns characterizing their X-ray emission (as inferred from simultaneous study of their pulse profiles). The broadband coverage of \emph{Suzaku} also shows that the cutoff energies saturate for higher values of cyclotron line energies - consistent with previous works in literature - for both the groups and the width of the cyclotron line show a weak correlation with the cyclotron line energy. We also find an anticorrelation with luminosity for both spectral index and folding energy, respectively. Unlike previous works, we did not detect any anticorrelation between X-ray luminosity and EW of K$\alpha$ lines. Finally, we show that the EW and flux of the iron K$\alpha$ line are smaller in SFXTs than classical NS-HMXBs. We aim at characterizing the hot phase of the Circum-Galactic Medium in a large sample of galaxies. We stack X-ray events from the SRG/eROSITA eFEDS survey around central galaxies in the GAMA 9hr field to construct radially projected soft X-ray luminosity profiles as a function of their stellar mass and specific star formation rate. We consider samples of quiescent (star-forming) galaxies in the stellar mass range $2\times 10^{10}$ -- $10^{12}$ M$_\odot$ ($3\times 10^9$ -- $6\times10^{11}$ M$_\odot$). For quiescent galaxies, the X-ray profiles are clearly extended throughout the available mass range; however, the measured profile is likely biased high due to projection effects, as these galaxies tend to live in dense and hot environments. For the most massive star forming samples ($\geq10^{11}$ M$_\odot$), there is a hint of detection of extended emission. For star-forming galaxies with $< 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$ the X-ray stacked profiles are compatible with unresolved sources and consistent with the expected emission from faint Active Galactic Nuclei and X-ray binaries. We measure for the first time the mean relation between average X-ray luminosity and stellar mass separately for quiescent and star-forming galaxies. High-mass ($\geq 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$) star-forming or quiescent galaxies follow the expected scaling of virialized hot haloes, while lower mass star-forming galaxies show a less prominent luminosity and a weaker dependence on stellar mass, consistent with empirical models of the weak AGN population. When comparing our results with state-of-the art numerical simulations, we find an overall consistency on large ($>80$ kpc) scales at masses $\geq 10^{11}$ M$_\odot$, but disagreement on the small scales, where brighter than observed compact cores are predicted. We present a comprehensive multi-frequency catalogue of radio sources behind the Large Magellanic Cloud between 0.2 and 20 GHz, gathered from a combination of new and legacy radio continuum surveys. This catalogue covers an area of $\sim$144~deg$^2$ at angular resolutions from 45 arcsec to $\sim$3 arcmin. We find 6434 discrete radio sources in total, of which 3789 are detected at two or more radio frequencies. We estimate the median spectral index ($\alpha$; where $S_{v}\sim\nu^\alpha$) of $\alpha = -0.89 $ and mean of $-0.88 \pm 0.48$ for 3636 sources detected exclusively at two frequencies (0.843 and 1.384 GHz) with similar resolution (FWHM $\sim$40-45 arcsec). The large frequency range of the surveys makes it an effective tool to investigate Gigahertz Peak Spectrum (GPS), Compact Steep Spectrum (CSS) and Infrared Faint Radio sources populations within our sample. We find 10 GPS candidates with peak frequencies near 5 GHz, from which we estimate their linear size. 1866 sources from our catalogue are (CSS) candidates with $\alpha 0.5$. We found optical counterparts for 343 of the radio continuum sources, of which 128have a redshift measurement. Context. The Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) hosts many known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs), and all but one (SMC X-1) have a Be companion star. Through the calibration and verification phase of eROSITA on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) spacecraft, the Be/X-ray binary XMMU J010429.4-723136 was in the field of view during observations of the supernova remnant, 1E0102.2-7219, used as a calibration standard. Aims. We report timing and spectral analyses of XMMU J010429.4-723136 based on three eROSITA observations of the field, two of which were performed on 2019 November 7-9, with the third on 2020 June 18-19. We also reanalyse the OGLE-IV light curve for that source in order to determine the orbital period. Methods. We performed a Lomb-Scargle periodogram analysis to search for pulsations (from the X-ray data) and for the orbital period (from the OGLE data). X-ray spectral parameters and fluxes were retrieved from the best-fit model. Results. We detect, for the first time, the pulsations of XMMU J010429.4-723136 at a period of ~164 s, and therefore designate the source as SXP 164. From the spectral fitting, we derive a source flux of ~1x10e-12 erg s-1 cm-2 for all three observations, corresponding to a luminosity of ~4x10e35 erg s-1 at the distance of the SMC. Furthermore, reanalysing the OGLE light curve, including the latest observations, we find a significant periodic signal that we believe is likely be the orbital period; at 22.3d, this is shorter than the previously reported values. SN 1987A is the closest observed supernova in the last four centuries and provides a unique opportunity to witness the birth and evolution of a supernova remnant. The source has been monitored by XMM Newton EPIC-pn from 2007--2020. SRG/eROSITA also observed the source during its commissioning phase and the first light in Sept. and Oct. 2019. We investigated the spectral and flux evolution of SN 1987A in X-rays over the last fourteen years up to Nov. 2020 using XMM-Newton and eROSITA observations. We performed a detailed spectral analysis using a three-component plane-parallel shock model and analysed and modelled the EPIC-pn monitoring and eROSITA observations in a consistent manner. This paper reports a complete and most up to date flux evolution of SN 1987A in the soft (0.5-2 keV) and hard (3-10 keV) X-ray band. The flux in the soft band flattened around 9424 d and then displayed a turnover between 10142-10493 d after which it showed a continued decline. Around the same time, a break in the hard-band flux time evolution slope was detected. This implies that the blast wave has now passed beyond the dense structures of the equatorial ring and is expanding further into more tenuous circumstellar medium. The temporal evolution of the normalizations of the three shock components match well the results of hydrodynamical simulations predicting a blue supergiant progenitor scenario. The trend at recent epochs indicate that the emission caused by the forward shock after leaving the equatorial ring and by the reverse shock in the ejecta is becoming more dominant now. The $\it{eROSITA}$ Final Equatorial Depth Survey (eFEDS), completed during the calibration and performance verification phase of the $\it{eROSITA}$ instrument on $\it{Spectrum\, Roentgen\, Gamma}$, delivers data at and beyond the final depth of the four-year $\it{eROSITA}$ all-sky survey (eRASS:8), $f_{0.5-2\,\text{ keV}}$ = $1.1\times10^{-14}$ erg s$^{-1}$ cm$^{2}$, over 140 deg$^{2}$. It provides the first view of normal galaxy X-ray emission from X-ray binaries (XRBs) and the hot interstellar medium at the full depth of eRASS:8. We use the Heraklion Extragalactic Catalogue (HECATE) of galaxies to correlate with eFEDS X-ray sources and identify 94 X-ray detected normal galaxies. We classify galaxies as star-forming, early-type, composite, and AGN using SDSS and 6dF optical spectroscopy. The eFEDS field harbours 37 normal galaxies: 36 late-type (star-forming) galaxies and 1 early-type galaxy. There are 1.9 times as many normal galaxies as predicted by scaling relations via SIXTE simulations, with an overabundance of late-type galaxies and a dearth of early-type galaxies. Dwarf galaxies with high specific star formation rate (SFR) have elevated L$_{\text{X}}$/SFR when compared with specific SFR and metallicity, indicating an increase in XRB emission due to low-metallicity. We expect that eRASS:8 will detect 12,500 normal galaxies, the majority of which will be star-forming, with the caveat that there are unclassified sources in eFEDS and galaxy catalogue incompleteness issues that could increase the actual number of detected galaxies over these current estimates. eFEDS observations detected a rare population of galaxies -- the metal-poor dwarf starbursts -- that do not follow known scaling relations. eRASS is expected to discover significant numbers of these high-redshift analogues, which are important for studying the heating of the intergalactic medium at high-redshift., Comment: 17 pages, 10 figures, 3 tables. eROSITA (extended ROentgen Survey with an Imaging Telescope Array) is the primary instrument on the Spectrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) mission, which was successfully launched on July 13, 2019, from the Baikonour cosmodrome. After the commissioning of the instrument and a subsequent calibration and performance verification phase, eROSITA started a survey of the entire sky on December 13, 2019. By the end of 2023, eight complete scans of the celestial sphere will have been performed, each lasting six months. At the end of this program, the eROSITA all-sky survey in the soft X-ray band (0.2--2.3\,keV) will be about 25 times more sensitive than the ROSAT All-Sky Survey, while in the hard band (2.3--8\,keV) it will provide the first ever true imaging survey of the sky. The eROSITA design driving science is the detection of large samples of galaxy clusters up to redshifts $z>1$ in order to study the large-scale structure of the universe and test cosmological models including Dark Energy. In addition, eROSITA is expected to yield a sample of a few million AGNs, including obscured objects, revolutionizing our view of the evolution of supermassive black holes. The survey will also provide new insights into a wide range of astrophysical phenomena, including X-ray binaries, active stars, and diffuse emission within the Galaxy. Results from early observations, some of which are presented here, confirm that the performance of the instrument is able to fulfil its scientific promise. In the first months after the launch in July 2019, eROSITA onboard Spektr-RG (SRG) performed long-exposure observations in the regions around SN 1987A and SNR N132D in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We analyse the distribution and the spectrum of the diffuse X-ray emission in the observed fields to determine the physical properties of the hot phase of the interstellar medium (ISM). The eROSITA data are complemented by newly derived column density maps for the Milky Way and the LMC, 888 MHz radio continuum map from the Australian Square Kilometer Array Pathfinder (ASKAP), and optical images of the Magellanic Cloud Emission Line Survey (MCELS). We detect significant emission from thermal plasma with kT=0.2 keV in all the regions. There is also an additional higher-temperature emission component from a plasma with kT = 0.7 keV. In addition, non-thermal X-ray emission is significantly detected in the superbubble 30 Dor C. The absorbing column density NH in the LMC derived from the analysis of the X-ray spectra taken with eROSITA is consistent with the NH obtained from the emission of the cold medium over the entire area. Neon abundance is enhanced in the regions in and around 30 Dor and SN 1987A, indicating that the ISM has been chemically enriched by the young stellar population. Emission from the stellar cluster RMC 136 and the Wolf-Rayet stars RMC 139 and RMC 140 is best modelled with a high-temperature (kT>1 keV) non-equilibrium ionisation plasma emission and a non-thermal component with a photon index of {\Gamma} =1.3. We report the results of eROSITA and NICER observations of the June 2020 outburst of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar RX J0529.8-6556 in the Large Magellanic Cloud, along with the analysis of archival X-ray and optical data from this source. We find two anomalous features in the system's behavior. First, the pulse profile observed by NICER during maximum luminosity is similar to that observed by XMM-Newton in 2000, despite the fact that the X-ray luminosity was different by two orders of magnitude. By contrast, a modest decrease in luminosity in the 2020 observations generated a significant change in pulse profile. Second, we find that the historical optical outbursts are not strictly periodic, as would be expected if the outbursts were triggered by periastron passage, as is generally assumed. The optical peaks are also not coincident with the X-ray outbursts. We suggest that this behavior may result from a misalignment of the Be star disk and the orbital plane, which might cause changes in the timing of the passage of the neutron star through the disk as it precesses. (abridged version) We present a detailed spectroscopic and timing analysis of X-ray observations of the bright radio-to-gamma-ray emitting pulsar PSR B0656+14, which were obtained simultaneously with eROSITA and XMM-Newton during the Calibration and Performance Verification phase of the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission (SRG) for 100 ks. Using XMM-Newton and NICER we firstly established an X-ray ephemeris for the time interval 2015 to 2020, which connects all X-ray observations in this period without cycle count alias and phase shifts. The mean eROSITA spectrum clearly reveals an absorption feature originating from the star at 570 eV with a Gaussian sigma of about 70 eV, tentatively identified earlier in a long XMM-Newton observation (Arumugasamy et al. 2018). A second absorption feature, described here as an absorption edge, occurs at 260-265 eV. It could be of atmospheric or of instrumental origin. These absorption features are superposed on various emission components, phenomenologically described as the sum of hot (120 eV) and cold (65 eV) blackbody components, both of photospheric origin, and a power-law with photon index Gamma=2. The phase-resolved spectroscopy reveals that the Gaussian absorption line at 570 eV is clearly present throughout ~60% of the spin cycle. The visibility of the line strength coincides in phase with the maximum flux of the hot blackbody. We also present three families of model atmospheres: a magnetised atmosphere, a condensed surface, and a mixed model, which were applied to the mean observed spectrum and whose continuum fit the observed data well. The atmosphere model, however, predicts too short distances. In 2018, XMM-Newton observed the awakening in X-rays of the Be/X-ray binary (Be/XRB) A0538-66. It showed bright and fast flares close to periastron with properties that had never been observed in other Be/XRBs before. We report the results from the observations of A0538-66 collected during the first all-sky survey of eROSITA, an X-ray telescope (0.2-10 keV) on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma (SRG) satellite. eROSITA caught two flares within one orbital cycle at orbital phases $\phi = 0.29$ and $\phi = 0.93$ (where $\phi=0$ corresponds to periastron), with peak luminosities of $\sim 2-4 \times 10^{36}$ erg/s (0.2-10 keV) and durations of $42 \leq \Delta t_{\rm fl} \leq 5.7\times 10^4$ s. The flare observed at $\phi \approx 0.29$ shows that the neutron star can accrete considerably far from periastron, although it is expected to be outside of the circumstellar disk, thus providing important new information about the plasma environment surrounding the binary system. We also report the results from the photometric monitoring of A0538-66 carried out with the REM, OGLE, and MACHO telescopes from January 1993 until March 2020. Supergiant fast X-ray transients (SFXTs) are a peculiar class of supergiant high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) systems characterised by extreme variability in the X-ray domain. In current models, this is mainly attributed to the clumpy nature of the stellar wind coupled with gating mechanisms involving the spin and magnetic field of the neutron star. We studied the X-ray properties of the supergiant HMXB XMMU J053108.3-690923 in the Large Magellanic Cloud to understand its nature. We performed a detailed temporal and spectral analysis of the eROSITA and XMM-Newton data of XMMU J053108.3-690923. We confirm the putative pulsations previously reported for the source with high confidence, certifying its nature as a neutron star in orbit with a supergiant companion. We identify the extremely variable nature of the source in the form of flares seen in the eROSITA light curves. The source flux exhibits a total dynamic range of more than three orders of magnitude, which confirms its nature as an SFXT, and is the first such direct evidence from a HMXB outside our Galaxy exhibiting a very high dynamic range in luminosity as well as a fast flaring behaviour. We detect changes in the hardness ratio during the flaring intervals where the hardness ratio reaches its minimum during the peak of the flare and increases steeply shortly afterwards. This is also supported by the results of the spectral analysis carried out at the peak and off-flare intervals. This scenario is consistent with the presence of dense structures in the supergiant wind of XMMU J053108.3-690923 where the clumpy medium becomes photoionised at the peak of the flare leading to a drop in the photo-electric absorption. We report the results from a detailed timing and spectral study of transient X-ray pulsars, 4U 1901+03 during its 2019 outburst. We performed broadband spectroscopy in the 1-70 keV energy band using four observations made with Swift and NuSTAR at different intensity levels. Our timing results reveal the presence of highly variable pulse profiles dependent on both luminosity and energy. Our spectroscopy results showed the presence of a cyclotron resonance scattering feature (CRSF) at ~30 keV. This feature at 30 keV is highly luminosity and pulse-phase dependent. Phase-averaged spectra during the last two observations, made close to the declining phase of the outburst showed the presence of this feature at around 30 keV. The existence of CRSF at 30 keV during these observations is well supported by an abrupt change in the shape of pulse profiles found close to this energy. We also found that 30 keV feature was significantly detected in the pulse-phase resolved spectra of observations made at relatively high luminosities. Moreover, all spectral fit parameters showed a strong pulse phase dependence. In line with the previous findings, an absorption feature at around 10 keV is significantly observed in the phase-averaged X-ray spectra of all observations and also showed a strong pulse phase dependence., 18 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present a broadband spectral-timing analysis of SMC X-1 at different intensity states of its super-orbital variation using 10 Suzaku and 6 NuSTAR observations. The spectrum in all the states can be described by an absorbed powerlaw with a high energy cutoff and a black-body component along with an iron emission line. Compared to other supergiant HMXBs, the Fe K$\alpha$ line equivalent width is low in SMC X-1 - from less than 10 eV in high state to up to $\sim$ 270 eV in the low states. The spectral shape is dependent on flux with the hard X-ray spectrum steepening with increasing flux. We also report a highly variable normalisation of the power-law component across these 16 super-orbital states. Pulsations in the hard X-rays for both the instruments were detected in all but two observations. The pulse profiles are near sinusoidal with two peaks and the relative intensity of the second peak decreasing with decreasing luminosity. These findings suggest that the super-orbital modulation in SMC X-1 is not caused by absorption in precessing warped accretion disc alone and there are intrinsic changes in X-rays emanating from the neutron star at different super-orbital states. We also note a putative cyclotron line at $\sim$ 50 keV in the \nustar~spectra of three bright states indicating a possible magnetic field of $\sim$ 4.2 $\times$ 10$^{12}$ G. Finally, with the new pulse period measurements reported here, the time base for the secular spin-up of SMC X-1 is increased by thirteen years and the complete pulse period history shows a sudden change in the spin-up trend around 1995., Comment: 14 pages, 6 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in ApJ

During its performance verification phase, the soft X-ray instrument eROSITA aboard the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma(SRG) spacecraft observed large regions in the Magellanic Clouds, where almost 40 known high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs, including candidates) are located. We looked for new HMXBs in the eROSITA data, searched for pulsations in HMXB candidates and investigated the long-term behaviour of the full sample using archival X-ray and optical data. For sources sufficiently bright, a detailed spectral and temporal analysis of their eROSITA data was performed. A source detection analysis of the eROSITA images in different energy bands provided count rates and upper limits for the remaining sources. We report the discovery of a new Be/X-ray binary in the Large Magellanic Cloud. The transient SRGEt J052829.5-690345 was detected with a 0.2-8.0 keV luminosity of ~10^35 erg/s and exhibits a hard X-ray spectrum, typical for this class of HMXBs. The OGLE I-band light curve of the V~15.7 mag counterpart shows large variations by up to 0.75 mag, which occur quasi periodically with ~511 days. The eROSITA observations of the Small Magellanic Cloud covered 16 Be/X-ray binary pulsars, five of them were bright enough to accurately determine their current pulse period. The pulse periods for SXP 726 and SXP 1323 measured from eROSITA data are ~800 s and ~1006 s, respectively, far away from their discovery periods. Including archival XMM-Newton observations we update the spin-period history of the two long-period pulsars which show nearly linear trends in their period evolution since more than 15 years. The corresponding average spin-down rate for SXP 726 is 4.3 s/yr while SXP 1323 shows spin-up with a rate of -23.2 s/yr. We report the identification and follow-up of the transient SRGt 062340.2–265751 detected with both instruments on board the Spektrum-Roentgen-Gamma mission. Optical spectroscopy of the G = 12.5 counterpart firmly classifies the object as a novalike cataclysmic variable (CV) at a distance of 495 pc. A highly significant TESS period of 3.941 h, tentatively identified with the orbital period of the binary, could not be found when the object was reobserved with TESS two years later. The newer high-cadence TESS data revealed quasi-periodic oscillations around 25 min, while ground-based photometry indicated periodic variability at 32 min. Located in very sparsely populated regions of color-magnitude diagrams involving X-ray and optical magnitudes and colors, the new object could be an X-ray underluminous magnetic CV, an intermediate polar, or an overluminous nonmagnetic CV. The lack of uniquely identified spin and orbital periods prevents a final classification. The site of X-ray production in the system, LX,bol = 4.8 × 1032 erg s-1, remains to be understood given its high variability on long and short timescales.

NGC 300 ULX1 is the fourth to be discovered in the class of the ultra-luminous X-ray pulsars. Pulsations from NGC 300 ULX1 were discovered during simultaneous XMM-Newton / NuSTAR observations in Dec. 2016. The period decreased from 31.71 s to 31.54 s within a few days, with a spin-up rate of -5.56 x 10^{-7} s s^{-1}, likely one of the largest ever observed from an accreting neutron star. Archival Swift and NICER observations revealed that the period decreased exponentially from ~45 s to ~17.5 s over 2.3 years. The pulses are highly modulated with a pulsed fraction strongly increasing with energy and reaching nearly 80% at energies above 10keV. The X-ray spectrum is described by a power-law and a disk black-body model, leading to a 0.3-30 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 4.7 x 10^{39} erg s^{-1}. The spectrum from an archival XMM-Newton observation of 2010 can be explained by the same model, however, with much higher absorption. This suggests, that the intrinsic luminosity did not change much since that epoch. Super-soft X-ray sources were established as a heterogeneous class of objects from observations of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). We have searched for new sources of this class in the X-ray images obtained from the XMM-Newton survey of the LMC and additional archival observations. We first selected candidates by visual inspection of the image, and screened out artefacts which can mimic super-soft X-ray sources as well as bright foreground stars which create optical loading on the CCD image. We finally obtained 4 new super-soft X-ray sources for which we performed detailed X-ray timing and spectral analysis and searched for possible optical counterparts to identify their nature. XMMU J050452.0-683909 is identified as the central star of the planetary nebula SMP LMC21 in the LMC. We suggest XMMU J051854.8-695601 and XMMU J050815.1-691832 as new soft intermediate polars from the nature of their X-ray spectrum. Their estimated absorption-corrected luminosities and the blackbody radii indicate that they are located in our Galaxy, rather than the LMC. We discovered coherent pulsations of 497 s from XMMU J044626.6-692011 which indicates a magnetic cataclysmic variable nature of the source. The location of XMMU J044626.6-692011 in the LMC or our Galaxy is less clear. It could either be a white dwarf in the LMC with nuclear burning on its surface near the Eddington limit, or another soft intermediate polar in our Galaxy. The discovery of new super-soft X-ray sources makes a significant contribution to the known population in our own Galaxy. An observed higher density of sources in the direction of the Magellanic Clouds can likely be explained by the relatively low Galactic column density in their direction as well as a large number of existing observations sensitive at low X-ray energies., Comment: 9 pages, 8 figures, 4 tables; accepted for publication in A&A

We report on the X-ray and optical properties of two high-mass X-ray binary systems located in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC). Based on the obtained optical spectra, we classify the massive companion as a supergiant star in both systems. Timing analysis of the X-ray events collected by XMM-Newton revealed the presence of coherent pulsations (spin period $\sim$2013 s) for XMMU J053108.3-690923 and fast flaring behaviour for XMMU J053320.8-684122. The X-ray spectra of both systems can be modelled sufficiently well by an absorbed power-law, yielding hard spectra and high intrinsic absorption from the environment of the systems. Due to their combined X-ray and optical properties we classify both systems as SgXRBs: the 19$^{\rm th}$ confirmed X-ray pulsar and a probable supergiant fast X-ray transient in the LMC, the second such candidate outside our Galaxy., 12 pages, 10 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

The halo of the Milky Way provides a laboratory to study the properties of the shocked hot gas that is predicted by models of galaxy formation. There is observational evidence of energy injection into the halo from past activity in the nucleus of the Milky Way; however, the origin of this energy (star formation or supermassive-black-hole activity) is uncertain, and the causal connection between nuclear structures and large-scale features has not been established unequivocally. Here we report soft-X-ray-emitting bubbles that extend approximately 14 kiloparsecs above and below the Galactic centre and include a structure in the southern sky analogous to the North Polar Spur. The sharp boundaries of these bubbles trace collisionless and non-radiative shocks, and corroborate the idea that the bubbles are not a remnant of a local supernova but part of a vast Galaxy-scale structure closely related to features seen in gamma-rays. Large energy injections from the Galactic centre are the most likely cause of both the {\gamma}-ray and X-ray bubbles. SwiftJ0243.6+6124, the first Galactic ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar, was observed during its 2017-2018 outburst with \emph{AstroSat} at both sub- and super-Eddington levels of accretionwith X-ray luminosities of $L_{X}{\sim}7{\times}10^{37}$ and $6{\times}10^{38}$$ergs^{-1}$, respectively.Our broadband timing and spectral observations show that X-ray pulsations at ${\sim}9.85\rm{s}$ have been detected up to 150keV when the source was accreting at the super-Eddington level.The pulse profiles are a strong function of both energy and source luminosity,showing a double-peaked profile with pulse fraction increasing from $\sim$$10{\%}$ at $1.65\rm{keV}$ to 40--80$\%$ at $70\rm{keV}$.The continuum X-ray spectra are well-modeled with a high energy cut-off power law($\Gamma$${\sim}$0.6-0.7) and one or two blackbody components with temperatures of $\sim$0.35$\rm{keV}$ and $1.2\rm{keV}$, depending on the accretion level.No iron line emission is observed at sub-Eddington level, while a broad emission feature at around 6.9keV is observed at the super-Eddington level, along with a blackbody radius($121-142\rm{km}$) that indicates the presence of optically thick outflows., Comment: 13 pages, accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims: We present a comprehensive study of the supernova remnant (SNR) population of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). We measure multiwavelength properties of the SMC SNRs and compare them to those of the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) population. Methods: This study combines the large dataset of XMM-Newton observations of the SMC, archival and recent radio continuum observations, an optical line emission survey, and new optical spectroscopic observations. We can thus build a complete and clean sample of 19 confirmed and 4 candidate SNRs. The homogeneous X-ray spectral analysis allows to search for SN ejecta and Fe K line emission, and to measure interstellar medium (ISM) abundances. We estimate the ratio of core-collapse to type Ia supernova rates of the SMC based on the X-ray properties and the local stellar environment of each SNR. Results : After the removal of unconfirmed or misclassified objects, and the addition of two newly confirmed SNRs based on multi-wavelength features, we present a final list of 21 confirmed SNRs and 2 candidates. While no Fe K line is detected even for the brightest and youngest SNR, we find X-ray evidence of SN ejecta in 11 SNRs. We estimate a ratio of 4.7$_{-1.9} ^{+0.6}$ core-collapse supernova to every type Ia SN, three times higher than in the LMC. The difference can be ascribed to the absence of the enhanced star formation episode in the SMC, which occurred in the LMC 0.5-1.5 Gyr ago. The hot-gas abundances of O, Ne, Mg, and Fe are 0.1-0.2 times solar. Their ratios with respect to SMC stellar abundances reflect the effects of dust depletion and partial dust destruction in SNR shocks. The nearby galaxy NGC 300 is hosting two luminous transient supersoft X-ray sources with bolometric luminosities above 3x10^38 erg/s, assuming simple black-body spectra with temperatures around 60-70 eV. For one of these, SSS1, a periodic modulation of 5.4h was observed in an XMM-Newton observation from 1st of January 2001 lasting 47 ks, but not visible 6 days earlier when the luminosity was higher. We report here the detection of a new outburst from this source, which occurred during two more recent XMM-Newton observations performed on 17 to 20 December 2016 lasting for 310 ks. The luminosity was similar as in December 2000, and the 0.2-2.0 keV light curve revealed again a periodic modulation, with a period of 4.68+-0.26h, significant only in the first of the two observations. Taking into account the large uncertainties (the 2001 period was re-estimated at 5.7+-1.1h), the two values could be marginally compatible, and maybe associated with an orbital period, although the signal strength is highly variable. Thanks to the new long exposures, an additional absorption feature is now visible in the spectra, that we modelled with an absorption edge. This component decreases the bolometric luminosity below 3x10^38 erg/s and would therefore allow the presence of a white dwarf with a mass close to the Chandrasekhar limit. The system was found in outburst in 1992, 2000, 2008, and 2016 suggesting a possible recurrence period of about 8 years. We present two new radio continuum images from the Australian Square Kilometre Array Pathfinder (ASKAP) survey in the direction of the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC). These images are part of the Evolutionary Map of the Universe (EMU) Early Science Project (ESP) survey of the Small and Large Magellanic Clouds. The two new source lists produced from these images contain radio continuum sources observed at 960 MHz (4489 sources) and 1320 MHz (5954 sources) with a bandwidth of 192 MHz and beam sizes of 30.0"x30.0" and 16.3"x15.1", respectively. The median Root Mean Squared (RMS) noise values are 186$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (960 MHz) and 165$\mu$Jy beam$^{-1}$ (1320 MHz). To create point source catalogues, we use these two source lists, together with the previously published Molonglo Observatory Synthesis Telescope (MOST) and the Australia Telescope Compact Array (ATCA) point source catalogues to estimate spectral indices for the whole population of radio point sources found in the survey region. Combining our ASKAP catalogues with these radio continuum surveys, we found 7736 point-like sources in common over an area of 30 deg$^2$. In addition, we report the detection of two new, low surface brightness supernova remnant candidates in the SMC. The high sensitivity of the new ASKAP ESP survey also enabled us to detect the bright end of the SMC planetary nebula sample, with 22 out of 102 optically known planetary nebulae showing point-like radio continuum emission. In this paper we discuss the radio continuum and X-ray properties of the so-far poorly studied Galactic supernova remnant (SNR) G5.9+3.1. We present the radio spectral energy distribution (SED) of the Galactic SNR G5.9+3.1 obtained with the Murchison Widefield Array (MWA). Combining these new observations with the surveys at other radio continuum frequencies, we discuss the integrated radio continuum spectrum of this particular remnant. We have also analyzed an archival XMM-Newton observation, which represents the first detection of X-ray emission from this remnant. The SNR SED is very well explained by a simple power-law relation. The synchrotron radio spectral index of G5.9+3.1, is estimated to be 0.42$\pm$0.03 and the integrated flux density at 1GHz to be around 2.7Jy. Furthermore, we propose that the identified point radio source, located centrally inside the SNR shell, is most probably a compact remnant of the supernova explosion. The shell-like X-ray morphology of G5.9+3.1 as revealed by XMM-Newton broadly matches the spatial distribution of the radio emission, where the radio-bright eastern and western rims are also readily detected in the X-ray while the radio-weak northern and southern rims are weak or absent in the X-ray. Extracted MOS1+MOS2+PN spectra from the whole SNR as well as the north, east, and west rims of the SNR are fit successfully with an optically thin thermal plasma model in collisional ionization equilibrium with a column density N_H~0.80x$10^{22}$ cm$^{-2}$ and fitted temperatures spanning the range kT~0.14-0.23keV for all of the regions. The derived electron number densities n_e for the whole SNR and the rims are also roughly comparable (ranging from ~$0.20f^{-1/2}$ cm$^{-3}$ to ~$0.40f^{-1/2}$ cm$^{-3}$, where f is the volume filling factor). We also estimate the swept-up mass of the X-ray emitting plasma associated with G5.9+3.1 to be ~$46f^{-1/2}M_{\odot}$., Accepted for publication in A&A

We report the discovery of a new Small Magellanic Cloud Pulsar Wind Nebula (PWN) at the edge of the Supernova Remnant (SNR)-DEM S5. The pulsar powered object has a cometary morphology similar to the Galactic PWN analogs PSR B1951+32 and 'the mouse'. It is travelling supersonically through the interstellar medium. We estimate the Pulsar kick velocity to be in the range of 700-2000 km/s for an age between 28-10 kyr. The radio spectral index for this SNR PWN pulsar system is flat (-0.29 $\pm$ 0.01) consistent with other similar objects. We infer that the putative pulsar has a radio spectral index of -1.8, which is typical for Galactic pulsars. We searched for dispersion measures (DMs) up to 1000 cm/pc^3 but found no convincing candidates with a S/N greater than 8. We produce a polarisation map for this PWN at 5500 MHz and find a mean fractional polarisation of P $\sim 23$ percent. The X-ray power-law spectrum (Gamma $\sim 2$) is indicative of non-thermal synchrotron emission as is expected from PWN-pulsar system. Finally, we detect DEM S5 in Infrared (IR) bands. Our IR photometric measurements strongly indicate the presence of shocked gas which is expected for SNRs. However, it is unusual to detect such IR emission in a SNR with a supersonic bow-shock PWN. We also find a low-velocity HI cloud of $\sim 107$ km/s which is possibly interacting with DEM S5. SNR DEM S5 is the first confirmed detection of a pulsar-powered bow shock nebula found outside the Galaxy., 20 pages, 15 figures, accepted for publication in MNRAS

We present results of the first dedicated observation of the young X-ray pulsar SXP 1062 in the broad X-ray energy band obtained during its 2019 outburst with the NuSTAR and XMM-Newton observatories. The analysis of the pulse-phase averaged and phase-resolved spectra in the energy band from 0.5 to 70 keV did not reveal any evidence for the presence of a cyclotron line. The spin period of the pulsar was found to have decreased to 979.48+/-0.06 s implying a ~10% reduction compared to the last measured period during the monitoring campaign conducted about five years ago, and is puzzling considering that the system apparently did not show major outbursts ever since. The switch of the pulsar to the spin-up regime supports the common assumption that torques acting on the accreting neutron star are nearly balanced and thus SXP 1062 likely also spins with a period close to the equilibrium value for this system. The current monitoring of the source revealed also a sharp drop of its soft X-ray flux right after the outburst, which is in drastic contrast to the behaviour during the previous outburst when the pulsar remained observable for years with only a minor flux decrease after the end of the outburst. This unexpected off state of the source lasted for at most 20 days after which SXP 1062 returned to the level observed during previous campaigns. Methods. We analyzed broadband XMM-Newton and NuSTAR observations of NGC 300 ULX1, performing phase-averaged and phase-resolved spectroscopy. We compared two physically motivated models for the source spectrum: Non-thermal accretion column emission modeled by a power law with high-energy exponential roll-off (AC model) vs multicolor thermal emission from an optically thick accretion envelope plus a hard power-law tail (MCAE model). We combine the findings of our Bayesian analysis with qualitative physical considerations to evaluate the suitability of each model. Results. We report the discovery of a very young high-mass X-ray binary (HMXB) system associated with the supernova remnant (SNR) MCSNRJ0513-6724 in the Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC), using XMM-Newton X-ray observations. The HMXB is located at the geometrical centre of extended soft X-ray emission, which we confirm as an SNR. The HMXB spectrum is consistent with an absorbed power law with spectral index ~1.6 and a luminosity of 7x10^{33} ergs/s (0.2--12 keV). Tentative X-ray pulsations are observed with a periodicity of 4.4 s and the OGLE I-band light curve of the optical counterpart from more than 17.5 years reveals a period of 2.2324\pm0.0003 d, which we interpret as the orbital period of the binary system. The X-ray spectrum of the SNR is consistent with non-equilibrium shock models as expected for young/less evolved SNRs. We present timing and spectral analysis of data from an observation of the High Mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1907+09 with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat. The light curve consisted of a flare at the beginning of the observation, followed by persistent emission. The pulsar continues to spin down, and the pulse profile is found to be double-peaked up to 16 keV with the peaks separated by a phase of $\sim0.45$. Significant energy dependence of the pulse profile is seen with diminishing amplitude of the secondary peak above 16 keV, and increasing amplitude of the main peak upto 40 keV and a sharp decline after that. We confirm earlier detections of the Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) in 4U 1907+09 at $\sim 18.5\pm 0.2$ keV in the phase-averaged spectrum with a high detection significance. An intensity resolved spectral analysis of the initial flare in the light curve shows that the CRSF parameters do not change with a change in luminosity by a factor of 2.6. We also performed pulse phase-resolved spectral analysis with ten independent phase bins. The energy and the strength of the cyclotron line show pulse phase dependence that is in agreement with previous measurements. Two features from the current observation: different energy dependence of the two pulse peaks and a strong CRSF only around the secondary peak, both indicate a deviation from a dipole geometry of the magnetic field of the neutron star, or complex beaming pattern from the two poles., Comment: 10 pages, 4 figures

We report the results of AstroSat and NuSTAR observations of the Be/X-ray binary pulsar SXP 15.3 in the Small Magellanic Cloud during its outburst in late 2017, when the source reached a luminosity level of ~ 10^{38} erg s^{-1}, close to the Eddington limit. The unprecedented broadband coverage of the source allowed us to perform timing and spectral analysis between 3 and 80 keV. The pulse profile exhibits a significant energy dependence, and morphs from a double peaked profile to a single broad pulse at energies >15 keV. This can be explained by a spectral hardening during an intensity dip seen between the two peaks of the pulse profile. We detect a Cyclotron Resonance Scattering Feature (CRSF) at ~5 keV in the X-ray spectrum, independent of the choice of the continuum model. We report the first detection of highly ionized Fe species in the X-ray spectrum of the eclipsing and dipping Low Mass X-ray Binary XTE J1710-281. Using archival Chandra and Suzaku observations, we have carried out a spectro-timing analysis of the source during three different epochs. We compare the average orbital profile and obtain differences in pre-eclipse dip morphologies between different observation epochs. We observe an orbit to orbit evolution of the dips for the first time in this source in both the Chandra observations, reflecting changes in the structure of the accretion disc in timescales of hours. We further perform intensity resolved spectroscopy for both the Chandra and the Suzaku data to characterize the changes in the spectral parameters from the persistent to the dipping intervals. We find that the absorbers responsible for the dips, can be best described using a partially ionized partial covering absorber, with an ionization parameter, log($\xi$) of $\sim$2. The photon index of the source remained at $\sim$2 during both the Chandra and the Suzaku observations. In the 0.6-9 keV Suzaku spectra, we detect a broad 0.72 keV Fe L-alpha emission line complex and two narrow absorption lines at $\sim$6.60 keV and $\sim$7.01 keV. The highly ionized Fe line signatures, being an indicator of accretion disc-winds, has been observed for the first time in XTE J1710-281., Comment: Accepted for publication in MNRAS

Aims. AX J0043−737 is a source in the ASCA catalogue whose nature is uncertain. It is most commonly classified as a Crab-like pulsar in the Small Magellanic Cloud (SMC) following apparent detection of pulsations at ~87 ms from a single ASCA observation. A follow-up ASCA observation was not able to confirm this, and the X-ray detection of the source has not been reported since. Methods. We studied the nature of the source with a dedicated XMM-Newton observation. We ascertained the source position, searched for the most probable counterpart, and studied the X-ray spectrum. We also analysed other archival observations with the source in the field of view to study its long-term variability. Results. With the good position localisation capability of XMM-Newton, we identify the counterpart of the source as MQS J004241.66–734041.3, an active galactic nucleus (AGN) behind the SMC at a redshift of 0.95. The X-ray spectrum can be fitted with an absorbed power law with a photon-index of Γ = 1.7, which is consistent with that expected from AGNs. By comparing the current XMM-Newton observation with an archival XMM-Newton and two other ASCA observations of the source, we find signatures of long-term variability, another common phenomenon in AGNs. All of the above are consistent with AX J0043−737 being an AGN behind the SMC.

We report the discovery of a diffuse radio emission around PSR J0855--4644 using an upgraded GMRT (uGMRT) observation at 1.35 GHz. The radio emission is spatially coincident with the diffuse X-ray pulsar wind nebula (PWN) seen with XMM but is much larger in extent compared to the compact axisymmetric PWN seen with Chandra. The morphology of the emission, with a bright partial ring-like structure and two faint tail-like features strongly resembles a bow shock nebula, and indicates a velocity of 100 km/s through the ambient medium. We conclude that the emission is most likely to be associated with the radio PWN of PSR J0855-4644. The supernova impostor SN 2010da located in the nearby galaxy NGC 300, later identified as a likely supergiant B[e] high-mass X-ray binary, was simultaneously observed by NuSTAR and XMM-Newton between 2016 December 16 and 20, over a total time span of 310 ks. We report the discovery of a strong periodic modulation in the X-ray flux with a pulse period of 31.6 s and a very rapid spin-up, and confirm therefore that the compact object is a neutron star. We find that the spin period is changing from 31.71 s to 31.54 s over that period, with a spin-up rate of -5.56 x 10-7 s s-1, likely the largest ever observed from an accreting neutron star. The spectrum is described by a power-law and a disk black-body model, leading to a 0.3-30 keV unabsorbed luminosity of 4.7 x 10^39 erg s-1. Applying our best-fit model successfully to the spectra of an XMM-Newton observation from 2010, suggests that the lower fluxes of NGC 300 ULX1 reported from observations around that time are caused by a large amount of absorption, while the intrinsic luminosity was similar as seen in 2016. A more constant luminosity level is also consistent with the long-term pulse period evolution approaching an equilibrium value asymptotically. We report the first report on cyclotron line studies with the LAXPC instrument onboard AstroSat of the High mass X-ray Binary pulsar 4U 1538-52. During the observation of source which spanned about one day with a net exposure of 50 ks,the source X-ray flux remained constant. Pulse profile is double peaked in low energy range and has a single peak in high energy range, the transition taking place around the cyclotron line energy of the source. Cyclotron Scattering Feature (CRSF) is detected at $\sim$ 22 keV with a very high significance in phase averaged spectrum. It is one of the highest signal to noise ratio detection of CRSF for this source. We performed detailed pulse phase resolved spectral analysis with 10 independent phase bins. We report the results of pulse phase resolved spectroscopy of the continuum and CRSF parameters. The cyclotron line parameters show pulse phase dependence over the entire phase with a CRSF energy variation of $\sim$ 13% which is in agreement with previous studies. We also confirm the increase in the centroid energy of the CRSF observed between the 1996-2004 (RXTE) and the 2012 (Suzaku) observations, reinforcing that the increase was a long-term change., Comment: 6 pages, 7 figures, Accepted for publication in MNRAS Letter

NGC 300 ULX1 is a newly identified ultra-luminous X-ray pulsar. The system is associated with the supernova impostor SN 2010da that was later classified as a possible supergiant Be X-ray binary. In this work we report on the spin period evolution of the neutron star based on all the currently available X-ray observations of the system. We argue that the X-ray luminosity of the system has remained almost constant since 2010, at a level above ten times the Eddington limit. Moreover, we find evidence that the spin period of the neutron star evolved from ~126 s down to ~18 s within a period of about 4 years. We explain this unprecedented spin evolution in terms of the standard accretion torque theory. With exactly forty years since the discovery of the first cyclotron line in Her X-1, there have been remarkable advancements in the field related to study of the physics of accreting neutron stars -- cyclotron lines have been a major torchbearer in this regard, from being the only direct estimator of the magnetic field strength, a tracer of accretion geometry and an indicator of the emission beam in these systems. The main flurry of activities have centred around studying the harmonic separations, luminosity dependence, pulse phase dependence and more recently the shapes of the line and the trend for long term evolution in the line energy. This article visits the important results related to cyclotron lines since its discovery and reviews their significance.
