Ultra-fast transmission electron microscopy (UTEM) combines sub-picosecond time-resolution with the versatility of TEM spectroscopies. It allows one to study the dynamics of materials properties combining complementary techniques. However, until now, time-resolved cathodoluminescence, which is expected to give access to the optical properties dynamics, was still unavailable in a UTEM. In this paper, we report time-resolved cathodoluminescence measurements in an ultrafast transmission electron microscope. We measured lifetime maps, with a 12 nm spatial resolution and sub-nanoseconds resolution, of nano-diamonds with a high density of NV center. The local density of optical states governs an emitters lifetime and quantum yield through the Purcell effect. It can be modified by a surface plasmon electromagnetic field, but such a field has a spatial extension limited to a few hundreds of nanometers, which complicates the use of optical methods to spatially probe the emitter-plasmon coupling. Here we show that a combination of electron-based imaging, spectroscopies and photon-based correlation spectroscopy enables measurement of the Purcell effect with nanometer and nanosecond spatio-temporal resolutions. Due to the large variability of radiative lifetimes of emitters embedded in nanoparticles with inhomogeneous sizes we relied on a statistical approach to unambiguously probe the coupling between nitrogen-vacancy centers (NV^0) in nanodiamonds and surface plasmons in silver nanocubes. We quantified the Purcell effect by measuring the NV^0 excited state lifetimes in a large number of either isolated nanodiamonds or nanodiamond-nanocube dimers and demonstrated a statistically significant lifetime reduction for dimers.

The Earth itself is not stationary but keeps revolving, and its motion further satisfies the law of equal area according to the heliocentric doctrine. The law of equal area for planets can hence be reestablished naturally from the moving Earth using the observed angular speed of a planet over the Sun. Furthermore, for the periodicity of a planet to the Sun, the distance from each planet to the Sun may be expressed as an angular periodic function. By coordinating with the observed data, this periodic distance function depicts an exact elliptical path. We report the pressure dependence of the superconducting transition temperature, $T_c$, in TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ detected via the AC susceptibility method. The pressure-temperature phase diagram constructed for TlNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$, TlNi$_{2}$S$_{2}$ and TlNi$_{2}$SeS exhibits two unexpected features: (a) a sudden collapse of the superconducting state at moderate pressure for all three compositions and (b) a dome-shaped pressure dependence of $T_c$ for TlNi$_{2}$SeS. These results point to the nontrivial role of S substitution and its subtle interplay with applied pressure, as well as novel superconducting properties of the TlNi$_2$Se$_{2-x}$S$_x$ system., Comment: 4 pages, 3 figures

The quasi-skutterudite superconductor Sr$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ features a pronounced anomaly in electrical resistivity at $T^*\sim$138 K. We show that the anomaly is caused by a second-order structural transition, which can be tuned to 0 K by applying physical pressure and chemical pressure via the substitution of Ca for Sr. A broad superconducting dome is centred around the structural quantum critical point. Detailed analysis of the tuning parameter dependence of $T^*$ as well as insights from lattice dynamics calculations strongly support the existence of a structural quantum critical point at ambient pressure when the fraction of Ca is 0.9 (i.e., $x_c=0.9$). This establishes (Ca$_x$Sr$_{1-x}$)$_3$Rh$_4$Sn$_{13}$ series as an important system for exploring the physics of structural quantum criticality without the need of applying high pressures., Comment: 5 pages, 4 figures, accepted for publication in Phys. Diamond nanocrystals containing Nitrogen-Vacancy (NV) color centers have been used in recent years as fluorescent probes for near-field and cellular imaging. In this work we report that an infrared (IR) pulsed excitation beam can quench the photoluminescence of NV color center in a diamond nanocrystal (size < 50 nm) with an extinction ratio as high as ~90%. We attribute this effect to the heating of the nanocrystal consecutive to multi-photon absorption by the diamond matrix. This quenching is reversible: the photoluminescence intensity goes back to its original value when the IR laser beam is turned off, with a typical response time of hundred picoseconds, allowing for a fast control of NV color center photoluminescence. We used this effect to achieve sub-diffraction limited imaging of fluorescent diamond nanocrystals on a coverglass. For that, as in Ground State Depletion super-resolution technique, we combined the green excitation laser beam with the control IR depleting one after shaping its intensity profile in a doughnut form, so that the emission comes only from the sub-wavelength size central part., Comment: 5 figures, 15 pages

We present a study of the charge state conversion of single nitrogen-vacancy (NV) defects hosted in nanodiamonds (NDs). We first show that the proportion of negatively-charged NV$^{-}$ defects, with respect to its neutral counterpart NV$^{0}$, decreases with the size of the ND. We then propose a simple model based on a layer of electron traps located at the ND surface which is in good agreement with the recorded statistics. By using thermal oxidation to remove the shell of amorphous carbon around the NDs, we demonstrate a significant increase of the proportion of NV$^{-}$ defects in 10-nm NDs.
