Introduction: Findings on the association between statin therapy and Parkinson's disease (PD) occurrence have been inconsistent. This study aimed to identify the association between statin use and PD in participants with a history of hyperlipidemia or blood cholesterol >200 in a Korean population to exclude nonstatin users owing to normal lipid values.Methods: We conducted a nested case-control analysis using the Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort assessed between 2002 and 2015. We identified 3026 PD cases. A total of 12,104 controls were then individually matched by age, sex, income, and region of residence at a ratio of 1:4. Potential confounders comprised basic demographic factors, lifestyle factors, various medical conditions and comorbidities. A conditional/unconditional logistic regression method was applied.Results: Compared with statin use for <6 months, adjusted odds ratios (aORs) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) for 6-12 months of statin use and ≥12 months of statin use were 1.03 (0.92-1.15) and 1.61 (1.35-1.93) after adjustment for confounders, respectively (P = 0.664 and P < 0.001). In analyses according to statin solubility, only the association between lipophilic statin use for ≥12 months and PD maintained statistical significance, with an aOR of 1.64 (95% CI = 1.34-2.01, P < 0.001). These relations were consistent in subgroup analyses by covariates.Conclusions: Statin use for more than 12 months was associated with a higher probability of PD in the Korean population with hyperlipidemia. Guest–host coatable polarizers were manufactured by liquid crystalline polymers and dichroic azo dyes. The highest dichroic ratio of the polarizers was observed within the permissible limit of guest concentration, because any increase in the guest concentrations beyond the permissible limit decreased the alignment ability of the host. The orientational behavior of dye molecules in guest–host systems tend to be more sensitive to intermolecular steric hindrance as compared to that in PVA-based polarizing films. Also, the polarity difference between guest and host molecules had a great effect on the alignment of the guest–host system. Long conjugation, abundant π-electrons for transfer and the charge distribution without deviation from the long axis are required for a highly anisotropic transition dipole moment. Various dichroic dyes were synthesized and applied to two different host materials for the study of optimized molecular structures of guest–host system for the coatable polarizer using liquid crystalline polymers. The host material containing planar and linear mesogens had an advantage in exhibiting high orientation orders, but easily formed disclinations due to causing the strong intermolecular attraction between the guest and host molecules. The balance of intermolecular attraction and repulsion between the guest and host molecules is important to simultaneously achieve high orientations and uniform alignments without disclinations. The highest dichroic ratio of coatable polarizers was obtained when the π-conjugation lengths of guest and host molecules have an appropriate ratio. Abstract: Dichroic dyes with broad absorption bands are advantageous for the production of neutral gray polarizing films. For this purpose, anthraquinone-based azo dyes were synthesized to have a conjugated bichromophore design and this was applied to PVA polarizing films. The spectral and dichroic properties of the polarizing films were examined and compared to the films produced with a general disazo dichroic dye. The polarizing films with anthraquinone-based azo dyes had wider absorption bands, but lower dichroic ratios compared to the films with a general disazo dichroic dye. It was found that the alignment between the transition moments of the anthraquinone and azo chromophores is an important factor for the dichroic properties of anthraquinone-based azo dyes. Abstract: The dyeing behaviour and optical properties of four novel dyes in PVA polarizing films were determined in terms of the linearity, hydrogen bonding ability, intermolecular interaction and transition moment. The linearity and H-bonding ability of the dyes were the dominant factors in terms of both the substantivity and orientation in PVA films, which, in turn, determined the dichroic ratios of the polarizing films. Dye adsorption and optical anisotropy of the dyes were further affected by the substituents within the dyes. The difference in the electrostatic interactions of the substituent within the dyes also had an influence on dye-uptake. Moreover, charge transfer within the dye molecules was reflected in higher dichroic ratios of the dyed polarizing film. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Prolonged carriage of carbapenemase-producing Enterobacteriaceae (CPE) constitutes a substantial epidemiologic threat. This study aimed to evaluate whether the types of carbapenemase and organism can affect the duration of carriage and to evaluate the clinical factors associated with prolonged carriage. We retrospectively reviewed data for patients admitted between May 2013 and August 2018 who were identified as CPE carriers. A total of 702 patients were identified; the major types of carbapenemase and organism were Oxacillinase (OXA)-48-like (n = 480, 68.4%) and Klebsiella pneumoniae (K. pneumoniae) (n = 584, 83.2%). The analyses of time to spontaneous decolonization using the Kaplan–Meier method showed that OXA-48-like and K. pneumoniae were significantly associated with prolonged carriage (log rank, p = 0.001 and p < 0.001). In multivariable logistic analysis to assess the risk factors for CPE prolonged carriage in the 188 patients with available follow-up culture data for 3 months, K. pneumoniae (adjusted odds ratio [aOR] 6.58; 95% confidence interval [CI], 1.05–41.27; p = 0.044), CPE positive clinical specimen (aOR 11.14; 95% CI, 4.73–26.25; p < 0.001), and concurrent Clostridioides difficile infection (CDI) (aOR 3.98, 95% CI 1.29–12.26; p = 0.016) were predictive of prolonged carriage. Our results suggest that CP-K. pneumoniae may have higher probability of prolonged carriage, while the effect of OXA-48-like CPE is inconclusive. Chronic subdural hematoma (SDH) is a common disease in the neurosurgical field, and hematoma drainage through burr hole trephination has been widely considered the optimal treatment for SDH. Despite numerous investigations aimed at predicting recurrence rates and associated factors, studies have demonstrated inconsistent results. In this study, we aimed to comprehensively determine the predictive factors of chronic SDH recurrence in surgically treated patients. We retrospectively evaluated 578 consecutive patients who underwent single burr hole surgery for chronic SDH at our institute between January 2008 and December 2021. Various clinical and radiological factors in patients with and without recurrence were compared using univariate and multivariate logistic regression analyses. A total of 438 patients (531 hemispheres) were analyzed. Fifty-four (10.17%) of the 531 hemispheres had recurrence of chronic SDH within 6 months. Male sex (adjusted odds ratio (aOR) = 3.48; 95% confidence interval (CI), 1.42–8.49), bilateral hematomas (aOR = 2.14; 95% CI, 1.05–4.35), laminar hematoma type (aOR = 2.87; 95% CI, 1.23–6.71), > 30-cm3 volume of postoperative residual hematoma (aOR = 2.99; 95% CI, 1.01–8.83), and preoperative blood glucose level of ≥ 150 mg/dL (aOR = 2.11; 95% CI, 1.10–4.05) were identified as independent factors associated with recurrence in multivariate logistic regression analysis. The present study revealed that male patients and those who had bilateral hematomas, laminar hematoma type, a large volume of hematoma after surgery, and a high preoperative blood glucose level had a higher probability of experiencing recurrent chronic SDH. We aimed to investigate whether mitochondrial dysfunction in extracellular cerebrospinal fluid (CSF), which is associated with autophagy and mitophagy, might be involved in neurological outcomes in adult patients with hemorrhagic moyamoya disease (MMD) whose pathogenesis related to poor outcomes is not well-known. CSF samples were collected from 43 adult MMD patients and analyzed according to outcomes at 3 months. Fluorescence-activated cell sorter analysis (FACS) and the JC-1 red/green ratio were used to assess mitochondrial cells and intact mitochondrial membrane potential (MMP). We performed quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction and Western blotting analyses of autophagy and mitophagy-related markers, including HIF1α, ATG5, pBECN1, BECN1, BAX, BNIP3L, DAPK1, and PINK1. Finally, FACS analysis with specific fluorescence-conjugated antibodies was performed to evaluate the potential cellular origin of CSF mitochondrial cells. Twenty-seven females (62.8%) with a mean age of 47.4 ± 9.7 years were included in the study. Among 43 patients with hemorrhagic MMD, 23 (53.5%) had poor outcomes. The difference in MMP was evident between the two groups (2.4 ± 0.2 in patients with poor outcome vs. 3.5 ± 0.4 in patients with good outcome; p = 0.02). A significantly higher expression (2–ΔCt) of HIF1α, ATG5, DAPK1 followed by BAX and BNIP3L mRNA and protein was also observed in poor-outcome patients compared to those with good outcomes. Higher percentage of vWF-positive mitochondria, suggesting endothelial cell origins, was observed in patients with good outcome compared with those with poor outcome (25.0 ± 1.4% in patients with good outcome vs. 17.5 ± 1.5% in those with poor outcome; p < 0.01). We observed the association between increased mitochondrial dysfunction concomitant with autophagy and mitophagy in CSF cells and neurological outcomes in adult patients with hemorrhagic MMD. Background: Whether migraine is related to the risk of cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remains unclear. Therefore, we conducted a longitudinal follow-up study to address the association between migraine and the development of CVDs in Korea. Methods: Using data from the national health screening cohort, we included 45,246 patients diagnosed with migraine between 2002 and 2019 and age-, sex-, income-, and residential region-matched nonmigraine participants at a ratio of 1:4. Participants with previous CVDs were excluded. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to estimate the hazard ratios of three CVDs, stroke, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure, in patients with migraine after adjusting for potential cardiovascular risk factors. Results: The incidence rate differences of stroke, ischemic heart disease, and heart failure among patients with migraine were 2.61, 1.69, and 0.11, respectively. The probability of developing stroke and ischemic heart disease in patients with migraine was significantly higher than that in controls after controlling for multiple confounders (adjusted hazard ratio [HR] = 1.35, 95% confidence interval [CI] = 1.31–1.39 and adjusted HR = 1.31, 95% CI = 1.26–1.35, respectively). However, when compared with the patients without migraine, patients with migraine did not have an increased HR of developing heart failure (adjusted HR = 1.01, 95% CI = 0.95–1.08). The overall migraine group, as well as groups stratified by migraine subtypes with and without aura, each showed a significantly higher probability of subsequent stroke and ischemic heart disease than the control group. Conclusions: Our longitudinal follow-up study demonstrated a significant association between the presence of migraine and the development of stroke and ischemic heart disease in Korea, even after adjusting for cardiovascular risk factors. Study Design: Retrospective study. Objective: The purpose of this study was to analyze the relationship of the parameters of cervical sagittal alignment between those obtained from cervical CT and those obtained from radiography, as well as to determine which parameter would help predict physiological lordosis of the cervical spine. Summary Of Background Data: Sagittal balance in the cervical spine is as important as the pelvic incidence and is related to the concept of T1 slope. However, many articles including this article based on unclear cervical x-ray radiographs could weakly explain the parameters. To overcome the fundamental limitation of x-ray radiographs, Hallym University Sacred Heart Hospital reported the strong correlation between T1 slope and cervical lordosis on the cervical dimensional CT scans like result by checking by the cervical x-ray radiographs. Methods: A retrospective analysis of data from 50 asymptomatic adults in whom both cervical CT scans and cervical radiograph were obtained at the same time. The T1 slope, Cobb angle C2-C7, neck tilt, and thoracic inlet angle (TIA) obtained from the CT scans and radiographs were assessed. Results: The T1 slope on x-ray was significantly correlated with the T1 slope on CT. The mean of the T1 slope on x-ray was larger than the mean of the T1 slope on CT (3.3° ± 6.1°). More cervical spine lordosis was evident on the cervical radiograph than on the cervical CT scan (5.93° ± 9.0°). No significant difference was seen between the TIA on x-ray and the TIA on CT (TIA on x-ray - TIA on CT, -0.1 ± 7.6, P = 0.959). Conclusion: This difference may be due to the differing effect of gravity upon the spine between the upright versus the supine position. To date, no clear conclusion on the relationships of gout with the occurrence of typical neurodegenerative diseases, Alzheimer's disease (AD) and Parkinson's disease (PD), has been reached. This study aimed to determine whether the patients with gout are at a lower or higher probability of developing AD or PD than those without gout. Longitudinal follow-up data of a representative sample of Korean adults were assessed. 18,079 individuals diagnosed with gout between 2003 and 2015 were enrolled in the gout group. The comparison group comprised 72,316 demographics-matched individuals not diagnosed with gout. Longitudinal associations of gout with AD or PD were estimated using Cox proportional hazard regression adjusting for potential confounders. The adjusted hazard ratios (HRs) of AD and PD in the gout group were 1.01 and 1.16 times higher than controls, but these differences were not statistically significant (95% confidence interval [CI] = 0.92–1.12 and 95% CI = 0.97–1.38, respectively). Although there was no significant association in the entire sample, AD and PD probabilities in patients with gout were significantly higher in participants < 60 years, and PD probabilities in patients with gout were significantly higher in overweight participants. Our findings identify significant correlations of gout with AD and PD in participants < 60 years and gout with PD in those with overweight, indicating that gout may play a role in the development of neurodegenerative diseases in younger or overweight populations. Background: Acute hydrocephalus may decrease cerebral perfusion by increasing intracranial pressure. Computed tomography perfusion (CTP) has become a significant adjunct in evaluating regional and global cerebral blood flow (CBF). Purpose: To investigate the changes in cerebral perfusion parameters and maximum contrast enhancement (MCE) in patients with hydrocephalus with ventriculoperitoneal shunt (VPS). Material and Methods: We performed brain CTP in 45 patients, including those with subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH)-induced hydrocephalus with VPS (n = 14, G1), hydrocephalus (not related to SAH) with VPS (n = 11, G2), SAH-induced hydrocephalus without VPS (n = 10, G3), and hydrocephalus (not related to SAH) without VPS (n = 10, G4). We measured the cerebral perfusion in the frontal white matter (FWM), centrum semiovale, basal ganglia (BG), and eight cortical lesions of interest and compared the differences in CTP parameters among the groups. Results: Between the four groups, cerebral blood volume and MCE in the left FWM and CBF in the right FWM increased significantly in G1 and G2 who underwent VP shunt compared to G3 and G4, whereas perfusion significantly reduced in G3 and G4 who did not undergo VP shunt compared to G1 and G2. MCE in the left BG significantly increased in G2 and decreased in G3 and G4. SAH-induced hydrocephalus showed a lower perfusion than hydrocephalus (not related to SAH) in FWM. Conclusions: Perfusion changes in patients with hydrocephalus after VP shunt were seen in the FWM and BG, which appears to be the result of the hydrocephalus reducing brain perfusion in the deep part of the brain. Osteoporosis is a well-known risk factor of screw loosening. Classically, dual-energy x-ray absorptiometry (DEXA) scan is an easy and cost-effective method of detecting bone mineral density (BMD). However, T-score on DEXA scan can be overestimated in patients with degenerative changes of the spine. Our objective was to identify correlation between Hounsfield unit (HU) measured by 3-dimensional computed tomography (3D-CT) and screw loosening. A total of 113 patients treated with lumbosacral spinal fusion were reviewed and categorized into a screw loosening group and a normal group to compare their average values of preoperative CT HU. Screw loosening was defined as radiolucent area around screw that was thicker than 1 mm with a "double halo sign". There were statistically significant differences in patient age and steroid use between screw loosening and non-loosening groups. There was no significant difference in BMD or T-score between the 2 groups. However, HU values measured in axial, coronal, and sagittal images were significantly different between the 2 groups. In the receiver operating characteristic for HU values measured in CT images, the greatest area under the curve was 0.774 and that was in case of Hounsfield unit measured by axial CT images from L1 to L4. Preoperative CT HU is associated with screw loosening. It can be a better predictor of screw loosening than DEXA scan. Abstract: Three new organic sensitizers with phenothiazine chromophores were synthesized and used in dye-sensitized solar cells. N-substituents were added to the phenothiazine to suppress dye aggregation and an ethylthiol was added as an additional donor function. The effects of these substituents on the performance of the dyes were investigated by assessing the photophysical, electrochemical, and photovoltaic properties. The introduction of an N-methoxyphenyl unit improved the open-circuit voltage; the addition of the ethylthiol unit decreased the amount of dye adsorbed on the TiO2. A very high open-circuit voltage of 818.5 mV was achieved by the phenothiazine with added N-methoxyphenyl and ethylthiol groups. However, the best overall conversion efficiency was achieved by a cell fabricated with a phenothiazine devoid of the ethylthiol group (an overall conversion efficiency = 6.02%, short-circuit current = 10.20 mA/cm2, open-circuit voltage = 781.7 mV, fill factor = 75.50% under AM 1.5G conditions) due to the high open-circuit voltage and greater dye adsorption. Posttraumatic hydrocephalus (PTH) is common in patients undergoing decompressive craniectomy (DC) for traumatic brain injury (TBI), but the incidence, mechanisms, and risk factors have not been fully elucidated. This study aimed to determine the incidence of and the factors associated with PTH. We retrospectively reviewed patients who underwent DC for TBI at our institute between January 2014 and December 2018. We identified and compared the demographic, clinical, and radiological data, and 12-month functional outcome (as assessed by the Glasgow Outcome Scale [GOS]) between patients who developed PTH and those who did not. Logistic regression analyses were performed to identify risk factors for PTH. Additionally, the influence of PTH on unfavorable functional outcome was analyzed. PTH developed in 18 (18.95%) of the 95 patients who survived at 1 month after DC. A multivariate analysis indicated that postoperative intraventricular hemorrhage (odds ratio [OR] 4.493, P = 0.020), postoperative subdural hygroma (OR 4.074, P = 0.021), and postoperative hypothermia treatment (OR 9.705, P = 0.010) were significantly associated with PTH. The 12-month functional outcome significantly differed between the patients who developed PTH and those who did not (P = 0.049). Patients who developed PTH had significantly poorer 12-month functional outcomes than those who did not (P = 0.049). Another multivariate analysis indicated that subdural hemorrhage (OR 6.814, P = 0.031) and the presence of at least one dilated pupil before DC (OR 8.202, P = 0.000) were significantly associated with unfavorable functional outcomes (GOS grades 1–3). Although the influence of PTH (OR 5.122, P = 0.056) was not statistically significant in the multivariate analysis, it had a great impact on unfavorable functional outcomes. PTH considerably affects functional outcomes at 12 months after DC for TBI. Furthermore, postoperative imaging findings such as intraventricular hemorrhage and subdural hygroma can predict the development of PTH; therefore, careful observation is required during the follow-up period. Background: Although the dopaminergic system is interconnected with the hypothalamic-pituitary-thyroid axis, few studies have explained the causal relationship between thyroid disease and Parkinson's disease (PD). Objective: The goal of this study was to investigate the association between thyroid diseases and PD in Korean residents. Methods: The Korean National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort, which includes individuals aged ≥40 years, was assessed from 2002 to 2015. A total of 5,586 PD patients were matched by age, sex, income, and the region of residence with 22,344 control participants at a ratio of 1:4. In the PD and control groups, previous histories of levothyroxine treatment, goiter, hypothyroidism, thyroiditis, and hyperthyroidism were investigated. Results: The rates of levothyroxine treatment for more than 3 months, hypothyroidism, and hyperthyroidism were higher in the PD group than the control group (3.2%, 3.8%, and 2.8% vs. 2.5%, 2.9%, and 1.9%, respectively, p < 0.05). The adjusted odds ratios (ORs) in model 2, which was adjusted for all potential confounders, for hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism in the PD group were 1.25 (95% confidence interval (CI) 1.01–1.55, p = 0.044) and 1.37 (95% CI 1.13–1.67, p = 0.002), respectively. In subgroup analyses, the association between hypothyroidism and PD was maintained in men older than 70 years and the association between hyperthyroidism and PD was maintained in women younger than 70 years. Conclusion: Both hyperthyroidism and hypothyroidism were associated with higher risk of PD, particularly for women younger than 70 years and men older than 70 years, respectively. Background Context. Cervical laminoplasty often gives rise to cervical sagittal imbalance attributable to injury of posterior structures including laminae, articular facets, muscles, and ligaments. Purpose. To determine the effect of age on sagittal cervical alignment after cervical laminoplasty procedure so as to identify the group with the greatest degree of variation. Study Setting. Single-center retrospective chart review in a tertiary referral hospital. Outcome Measures. The sagittal vertical axis (SVA) (C2-7), T1 slope, and cervical lordosis. Methods. We included patients who underwent cervical laminoplasty between 2014 and 2018 and divided 60 consecutive patients into two groups using the cut-off age of 65 years. The Paired t -test and Mann-Whitney U test were used to compare changes between preoperative radiographic cervical sagittal parameters and those 1 year after surgery. Results. Mean patient ages in the older and younger groups were 71 years and 52 years, respectively. The difference of C2-7 SVA was greater in the older group. Conclusion. Only a few studies have reported nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage in young patients notwithstanding its fatal and devastating characteristics. This study investigated the clinical characteristics and outcome of nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage in young patients in comparison to those of the elderly. A retrospective review of consecutive patients admitted at the department of neurosurgery of two tertiary care medical centers presenting with first-ever nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage was performed. We identified and compared the demographics, etiologies, risk factors, and laboratory, radiological, and clinical findings between elderly and young patients. Additionally, logistic regression analyses of independent prognostic factors associated with 1-month mortality and favorable functional outcome were performed. Altogether, 247 patients including 69 young patients and 178 elderly patients were enrolled. On multivariate analysis, young patients exhibited significantly more often an infratentorial hematoma location, excessive alcohol consumption, and high body mass index (BMI), but less frequent systemic hypertension. There was no statistical difference between the two groups in 1-month mortality (17.46% and 18.01% for young and elderly patients, respectively), but the favorable functional outcome based on modified Rankin scale score of 0 or 1 was significantly different between the two groups (favorable outcome in 51.79% and 29.93% of patients, respectively). Predictors of 1-month mortality was the presence of herniation in the young group, and lower Glasgow Coma Scale score, renal or heart disease, and leukocytosis (WBC > 10,000) in the elderly group. Lower National Institutes Health Stroke Scale score was associated with favorable functional outcome in both groups. Nontraumatic intracerebral hemorrhage in younger patients appears to be associated with excessive alcohol consumption and high BMI. Aim: To determine the relationship between knowledge, attitude and the practice of hand hygiene by nursing and midwifery students in Cambodia. Background: Hand hygiene is the most cost‐effective means to prevent hospital‐acquired infections. Techniques of hand hygiene are simple; however, many researchers have found hand hygiene knowledge, attitude and practice to be poor in many healthcare settings worldwide, especially in developing countries. Cambodia is a developing country in Southeast Asia and data regarding hand hygiene are limited. Methods: A cross‐sectional descriptive study was conducted to assess the level of knowledge, attitude and practice of hand hygiene. Students in nursing and midwifery programmes were the target population (n = 300). Survey data were collected from January to May 2017. Descriptive statistics, t‐tests and correlation coefficients were calculated to assess relationships between student knowledge, attitude and hand hygiene practice. Result: The level of knowledge, attitude and practice of hand hygiene in nursing and midwifery students was moderate. A majority of students had received hand hygiene training. There was no significant difference between nursing and midwifery students in knowledge, attitude and practice of hand hygiene. However, a Pearson correlation of attitude and practice had a weak positive relationship. Conclusion: Both nursing and midwifery students demonstrated moderate levels of knowledge, attitudes and practice of hand hygiene. Implication for nursing and health policy: This study identified a need for hand hygiene training. Developing training programmes to improve attitudes about hand hygiene is strongly recommended. We sought to investigate the relationship between cervical cord compression and factors related to whole-spine sagittal balance. This retrospective single-center study included patients who visited our clinic for the evaluation of lumbar pathology including trauma and degeneration. Patients aged 60–89 years who underwent whole-spine sagittal T2 scout magnetic resonance imaging and whole-spine radiograph between 2014 and 2018 were included in our study. We consecutively enrolled 100 patients for our study without any prejudice. We collected data on patient characteristics, diagnosis, cervical cord compression index (CCI), sagittal vertical axis (C7-S1, C2-7), and other parameters related to sagittal balance such as pelvic incidence minus lumbar lordosis. Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated to compare CCI with each whole-spine sagittal balance parameter. Of the 100 patients, 44 were men. The mean age was 74.21 years. On the basis of Pearson correlation coefficients, CCI showed the strongest positive linear correlation with C7-S1 sagittal vertical axis (r = 0.688; P < 0.01), followed by the C2-7 sagittal vertical axis (r = 0.563; P < 0.01). Cervical cord compression is more likely to develop in patients with sagittal imbalance. Objective. This study was performed to assess neurosurgery patients' preference for surgeon's attire and appearance in the hospital. Methods. A total of 100 patients were investigated using a questionnaire comprising 13 questions. We first asked patients about neurosurgeon's appearance including accessories, hair color, mustache, and beard. Then, based on their preferences, they were asked to rank a series of photographs which illustrated a variety of neurosurgeon attires worn by a doctor. Results. Professional attire with white coat was the most ideal for patients compared to any other attire (preference scale 5.28 ± 1.24), and there was a significant preference gap between wearing a white coat and not wearing a white coat (p <0.01). Patients expressed a preference for neurosurgeon's shoes (30%) but the majority of the respondents answered that it does not matter which shoes their neurosurgeon wears (43%). Furthermore, the patients did not have any preferences regarding accessories, dyeing, and mustache or beard (58%, 67%, and 51%, respectively), and they did not have negative view towards doctor wearing accessories (71.7%) and growing mustache or beard (71.6%). Conclusion. The patients in this study preferred professional attire along with a white coat compared to any other form of outfit. This result is similar to those of many other studies conducted in other departments or other countries. However, patients did not have a strong negative view on accessories, dyeing, and facial hair. Objective: To investigate the relationship between the K-line tilt and classical cervical parameters such as the C2-C7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), cervical lordosis, and the T1 slope in cervical sagittal alignment. We assessed whether the K-line tilt can be used as an excellent cervical parameter.Methods: We reviewed 50 patients aged 60-89 years who visited the spine center outpatient clinic from May 2017 to September 2017 through cervical spine lateral radiography and checked the cervical spine parameters. All targeted patients were randomized without any prejudice. Radiographic measurements included the K-line tilt, C2-C7 lordosis, the C2-C7 SVA, the T1 slope, and T1 slope minus C2-C7 lordosis (T1S-CL). Pearson correlation coefficients were calculated between the K-line tilt and each cervical parameter.Results: Of the 50 patients, 33 were men. The mean age of the patients was 70.84 ± 7.52 years. The mean K-line tilt was 11.28 ± 8.31°. The K-line tilt was correlated with the C2-C7 SVA (r = 0.813, P = 0.000) and T1S-CL (r = 0.315, P = 0.026).Conclusion: This study showed that the K-line tilt is also a useful parameter like the C2-C7 SVA and T1S-CL in cervical sagittal alignment. The cooling of superconducting (SC) magnet system for fusion device is the first procedure of the experiment. The Korea Superconducting Tokamak Advanced Research (KSTAR) device is fully SC tokamak that is made of NbTi and Nb 3 Sn. The KSTAR SC magnets are composed of 16 Toroidal Field (TF) coils and 14 Poloidal Field (PF) coils with 300 tons of cold mass. A Helium Refrigeration System (HRS) with 9kW@4.5 K was installed and has been operated since 2008 to cool the SC magnets and keep all magnets at appropriate temperature conditions. This paper describes and analyzes the operational result of HRS during the KSTAR cool-down in 2008 and 2013. According to the cool-down analysis, the larger cryogenic helium flow from HRS made more efficient cooling of SC magnets. Furthermore, the study of cool-down optimization based on practical approach is presented and the build-up of control logic by using of cool-down optimization is also discussed. Background The fate and safety of thrombus remnant despite intra-arterial thrombolysis for unexpected thrombus formation has rarely been reported. Methods From January 2010 to May 2015, 131 consecutive patients with ruptured intracranial aneurysms were treated by endovascular methods at our institution. Among the 21 patients (16%) treated by intra-arterial thrombolysis for the thrombus formation during the procedure, nine patients (nine aneurysms) suffered from thrombus remnant. We reviewed the clinical and radiologic outcomes of patients with thrombus remnant as well as intraoperative and postoperative management of thrombus formation. Results Thrombus formation occurred near the coiled aneurysm in eight patients, and distal embolic occlusion was observed in one patient. All nine patients were initially managed by intra-arterial thrombolysis with tirofiban. One patient with persistent distal embolic occlusion and two patients with distal migration of the thrombus after intra-arterial thrombolysis were additionally treated with stent retriever. One patient with occlusion of the parent artery near the coiled aneurysm despite intra-arterial thrombolysis was partially recanalized by permanent deployment of a stent retriever. Delayed cerebral angiography showed no increase in size of thrombus remnant in any patients. After the procedure, thrombus remnant was managed by intravenous tirofiban. Follow-up CT angiography on the first postoperative day showed patent arterial flow, and ischemic complication related with thromboembolism did not occur in any patients. One patient suffered from hemorrhagic complication. Conclusion If the patency of parent artery is maintained and the size of the thrombus remnant does not increase on delayed angiography after intra-arterial thrombolysis, postoperative thromboembolic events rarely occur. Abstract: Four novel yellow quinophthalone dyes were designed and synthesized in order to examine the influence of aggregation behavior on the optical and thermal properties of liquid crystal display color filters. These synthesized dyes showed different absorption spectra and thermogravimetric behavior according to their characteristic structures. When the synthesized dyes were dissolved in industrial solvent-binder composites and spin-coated onto a glass substrate, re-aggregation or migration of the dye molecules were shown in the field emission scanning electron microscopy images after the baking processes. The degree of aggregation depended on the structures of the dyes and affected various properties of the color filters. The transmittances of the color filters decreased as the aggregation of the dye molecules increased. The contrast ratios of the color filters also reduced with aggregation after the baking process. The color difference values of the color filters increased remarkably with more aggregation as the baking process was repeated. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract: KSTAR is a fully superconducting (SC) tokamak consisting of 30 magnet coils made of Nb3Sn and NbTi. To keep the SC magnets at proper operating conditions, all cold components of KSTAR such as the SC bus-lines, current leads, and thermal shields must be maintained at the respective cryogenic temperatures by using a helium refrigeration system (HRS). The main components of the HRS can be classified into the warm compression system (WCS) and the cryogenic systems according to their operating temperature levels. The HRS had been manufactured, installed and commissioned until March 2008 and has been operated for KSTAR campaign since then. Abstract: Transplantation of adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) is one of the possible therapeutic tools for ischemic damage. In this study, we observed the effects of ASCs against ischemic damage in the ventral horn of L5–6 levels in the rabbit spinal cord. ASCs were isolated from rabbits, and cell type was confirmed by flow cytometry analysis, labeling with CM-DiI dye and differentiation into adipocytes in adipogenesis differentiation medium. ASCs were administered intrathecally into recipient rabbits (2×105) immediately after reperfusion following a 15-min aortic artery occlusion in the subrenal region. Transplantation of ASCs significantly improved functions of the hindlimb and morphology of the ventral horn of spinal cord although CM-DiI-labeled ASCs were not observed in the spinal cord parenchyma. In addition, transplantation of ASCs significantly increased brain-derived neurotrophic factor (BDNF) levels at 72h after ischemia/reperfusion. These results suggest that transplantation of ASCs prevents motor neurons from spinal ischemic damage and reactive gliosis by increasing neurotrophic factors such as BDNF in the spinal cord. The present study explored the effects of endophilin A1 (SH3GL2) against oxidative damage brought about by H2O2 in HT22 cells and ischemic damage induced upon transient forebrain ischemia in gerbils. Tat-SH3GL2 and its control protein (Control-SH3GL2) were synthesized to deliver it to the cells by penetrating the cell membrane and blood–brain barrier. Tat-SH3GL2, but not Control-SH3GL2, could be delivered into HT22 cells in a concentration- and time-dependent manner and the hippocampus 8 h after treatment in gerbils. Tat-SH3GL2 was stably present in HT22 cells and degraded with time, by 36 h post treatment. Pre-incubation with Tat-SH3GL2, but not Control-SH3GL2, significantly ameliorated H2O2-induced cell death, DNA fragmentation, and reactive oxygen species formation. SH3GL2 immunoreactivity was decreased in the gerbil hippocampal CA1 region with time after ischemia, but it was maintained in the other regions after ischemia. Tat-SH3GL2 treatment in gerbils appreciably improved ischemia-induced hyperactivity 1 day after ischemia and the percentage of NeuN-immunoreactive surviving cells increased 4 days after ischemia. In addition, Tat-SH3GL2 treatment in gerbils alleviated the increase in lipid peroxidation as assessed by the levels of malondialdehyde and 8-iso-prostaglandin F2α and in pro-inflammatory cytokines such as tumor necrosis factor-α, interleukin-1β, and interleukin-6; while the reduction of protein levels in markers for synaptic plasticity, such as postsynaptic density 95, synaptophysin, and synaptosome associated protein 25 after transient forebrain ischemia was also observed. These results suggest that Tat-SH3GL2 protects neurons from oxidative and ischemic damage by reducing lipid peroxidation and inflammation and improving synaptic plasticity after ischemia.
