Data were collected using a structured self-report questionnaire between October 21 and November 16, 2019. The data were analyzed using SPSS/WIN version 23.0.Results: Health literacy was positively correlated with self-efficacy (rs=0.64, p< 0.001) and self-management (rs=0.44, p< 0.001) and significantly negatively correlated with HbA1c levels (rs=− .42, p< 0.001). Self-efficacy showed a significantly positive correlation with self-management (rs=0.65, p< 0.001) and a significantly negative correlation with HbA1c levels (rs=− .30, p< 0.001). Moreover, a significant negative correlation was found between self-management and HbA1c levels (rs=− .35, p< 0.001). Hence, health literacy and patient self-management levels were associated with HbA1c levels in older adults with DM.Conclusion: Health education for community-dwelling older adults with diabetes should consider their health literacy levels. After in-depth interviews with 10 certified caregivers and a review of the related literature, the final 38 Q-samples were selected by collecting experts’ opinions. These Q-samples were sorted by 30 certified caregivers (P-samples). The PC-QUNAL program was used to analyze the Q-sort data.Results: Seven distinctive Q-factors for the empathy of certified caregivers were identified: I. Information-oriented cognition, II. Sensory communication, III. Compassion, IV. Performance-seeking through self-reflection, V. Intuitive empathy, VI. Role-centered sincerity, and VII. Passive obligation. The empathy of certified caregivers caring for older adults with dementia showed various characteristics according to each of their subjective values and judgments.Conclusion: This study’s results help identify the empathy types and characteristics of certified caregivers caring for older adults with dementia and may contribute to improving the quality of care.Keywords: aged care, caregiving, nursing home, Q-methodology, quality of care

Although both physical stimulation and growth factors play important roles in cartilage repair, their interplay remains unclear and requires further investigation. In this study, we aimed to clarify their contribution using a magnetic drug carrier that not only can deliver growth factors but also provide an external stimulation to cells in the two-dimensional environment.Materials and methods: We developed a nanocapsule (transforming growth factor-β1 [TGF-β1]-loaded magnetic amphiphilic gelatin nanocapsules [MAGNCs]; TGF-β1@MAGNCs) composed of hexanoic-anhydride-grafted gelatin and iron oxide nanoparticles to provide a combination treatment of TGF-β1 and magnetically induced physical stimuli. With the expression of Arg-Gly-Asp peptide in the gelatin, the TGF-β1@MAGNCs have an inherent affinity for chondrogenic ATDC5 cells.Results: In the absence of TGF-β1, ATDC5 cells treated with a magnetic field show significantly upregulated Col2a1 expression. Moreover, TGF-β1 slowly released from biodegradable TGF-β1@MAGNCs further improves the differentiation with increased expression of Col2a1 and Aggrecan.Conclusion: Our study shows the time-dependent interplay of physical stimuli and growth factors on chondrogenic regeneration, and demonstrates the promising use of TGF-β1@MAGNCs for articular cartilage repair.Keywords: physical stimuli, chondrogenic regeneration, TGF-β1, amphiphilic gelatin, combination stimuli

Patients and methods: A total of five focus group interviews (three separate focus groups) were conducted with 12 older adults with type 2 diabetes and five diabetes educators. Qualitative content analysis was used. Results: “One’s own willingness and ability” emerged as a fundamental belief about the strategies for diabetes self-management. Six major themes under three categories were identified. Under the information category, the recurrent themes were: 1) repeatedly offering detailed knowledge regarding self-management, 2) providing information about current health status, and 3) identifying experiential knowledge of blood glucose control. The recurrent themes in the motivation category were: 1) ensuring a positive attitude regarding self-management, and 2) encouragement or feedback from significant others. Furthermore, in the skills category, we found that the following theme emerged: hands-on skills training with numerical standards. Conclusion: This study identified six tailored strategies for enhancing information, motivation, and skills for diabetes self-management behavior changes. These strategies can be used in the development of a culturally sensitive diabetes self-management program for older adults. Nontuberculous mycobacterium-related colonization or lung disease often has AFB smear-positive sputum results, and physicians may prescribe unnecessary antituberculous drugs for these patients. The aim of this study was to analyze the clinical characteristics of patients with AFB smear-positive sputum who received unnecessary anti-TB treatment.Methods and patients: From January 2008 to July 2011, we retrospectively enrolled 97 patients with AFB smear-positive sputum who did not have pulmonary TB according to mycobacterial cultures and clinical judgment. We analyzed the clinical and radiographic features of the patients who received inappropriate and unnecessary anti-TB treatment. Preliminary analyses of chi-square and Fisher's exact tests were applied to determine factors unlikely to be associated with the independent variables. The relationship between independent covariates was then analyzed using multivariate logistic regression.Results: Of the 97 enrolled patients, 25 (25.8%) were diagnosed with pulmonary TB and prescribed anti-TB drugs (mostly a combination of isoniazid, rifampicin, ethambutol, and pyrazinamide). The other 72 (74.2%) patients were not initially diagnosed with pulmonary TB and were classified as the control group. Compared to the control group, the patients who received inappropriate anti-TB treatment had more chronic cough as presentation symptom and heavy AFB Ziehl–Neelsen staining in sputum (>10/100 fields, grading 2+ to 4+). There were no significant differences in the radiographic analysis between the two groups.Conclusion: Among the patients with AFB smear-positive sputum that did not have pulmonary TB, chronic cough and heavy AFB staining (2+ to 4+) were risk factors for the inappropriate administration of unnecessary anti-TB treatment.Keywords: AFB smear-positive sputum, Mycobacterium tuberculosis, antituberculous treatment

However, preparation of the decoction requires addition of boiling water that causes loss of numerous effective components.Methods: To improve the bioavailability of the decoction, nanoscale SHXXT was developed. Chloroform-induced liver injury and hepatic stellate cell activity in mice were used to demonstrate the hepatoprotective characteristics of nanoscale SHXXT decoction.Results: Liver/body weight ratio and serum aspartate and alanine aminotranferase levels were recovered by the nanoscale SHXXT. TIMP-1 gene expression was inhibited and MMP-2 gene expression was accelerated in activated hepatic stellate cells.Conclusion: Nanoscale SHXXT decoction prepared in room temperature water could have preserved hepatoprotective ability. The results of this study indicate that nanoscale SHXXT could be extracted easily. Abstract The authors report the growth of ZnSe/ZnSeTe superlattice nanotips on oxidized Si(100) substrate. It was found the nanotips exhibit mixture of cubic zinc-blende and hexagonal wurtzite structures. It was also found that photoluminescence intensities observed from the ZnSe/ZnSeTe superlattice nanotips were much larger than that observed from the homogeneous ZnSeTe nanotips. Furthermore, it was found that activation energies for the ZnSe/ZnSeTe superlattice nanotips with well widths of 16, 20, and 24 nm were 76, 46, and 19 meV, respectively.

Abstract The authors report the growth of needle-like high density quaternary Zn0.87Cd0.13Se0.98Te0.02nanotips on oxidized Si(100) substrate. It was found that average length and average diameter of the nanotips were 1.3 μm and 91 nm, respectively. It was also found that the as-grown ZnCdSeTe nanotips exhibit mixture of cubic zinc-blende and hexagonal wurtzite structures. Furthermore, it was found that the operation speeds of the fabricated ZnCdSeTe nanotip photodetector were fast with turn-on and turn-off time constants both less than 2 s.

The scalability of Ine one of the phase change materials, is investigated. By depositing the material onto a nanopatterned substrate, individual Inenanoclusters are confined in the nanosize pits with well-defined shape and dimension permitting the systematic study of the ultimate scaling limit of its use as a phase change memory element. Ineof progressively smaller volume is heated inside a transmission electron microscope operating in diffraction mode. The volume at which the amorphous-crystalline transition can no longer be observed is taken as the ultimate scaling limit, which is approximately 5 nm3 for Ine The physics for the existence of scaling limit is discussed. Using phase change memory elements in memory hierarchy is believed to reduce its energy consumption because they consume zero leakage power in memory cells. Therefore, the phase change memory applications are of great importance in terms of energy saving.

OBJECTIVE: To explore perceived risk of breast cancer among Korean women and to investigate factors associated with perceived risk of breast cancer. METHODS: A telephone survey using random digit dialing was conducted with an age- and region-stratified random sample of women in Korea. The study population consisted of 1000 women who participated in telephone surveys in which a 21-item questionnaire was administered. RESULTS: This study showed a significant level of comparative optimism in breast cancer risk perception in Korean women with an average risk of breast cancer. According to the multivariate analysis, younger age, family history of breast cancer, and history of benign breast disease were the factors associated with higher perceived comparative risk of breast cancer. CONCLUSION: The finding that a limited number of breast cancer risk factors were related to perceived risk of breast cancer is worrying because women with other risk factors for breast cancer may believe themselves to be at lower risk. To enhance the detection of bacterial meningitis in an East Asian surveillance study, we employed cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) bacterial culture, latex agglutination (LA) and polymerase chain reaction-enzyme immunoassay (PCR-EIA) testing for Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) and Streptococcus pneumoniae (Sp). The sensitivity and specificity of CSF PCR-EIA testing was compared to LA and culture. A meningitis case was defined by one positive result for any of the three tests. The sensitivity of H. influenzae CSF PCR-EIA, LA, and culture was 100%, 40% and 57.5% respectively; and for Sp CSF PCR-EIA, LA and culture, the sensitivity was 100%, 58.3% and 66.7%, respectively. Hib and Sp specificity was 100% by each method. CSF PCR-EIA was more sensitive than culture or LA for the detection of Hib and Sp meningitis cases increasing their incidence by 74% and 50% compared to culture respectively. CSF PCR-EIA should be included for the detection of bacterial meningitis in surveillance studies. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: We investigated the levels of subgingival plaque bacteria and serum IgG responses in patients with type 1 diabetes and non-diabetic controls of comparable periodontal status. Material and Methods: Fifty type 1 diabetes patients (mean duration 20.3 years, range 6-41) were age-and gender-matched with 50 non-diabetic individuals with similar levels of periodontal disease. Full-mouth clinical periodontal status was recorded, and eight plaque samples/person were collected and analysed by checkerboard hybridization with respect to 12 species. Homologous serum IgG titres were assessed by checkerboard immunoblotting. In a sub-sample of pairs, serum cytokines and selected markers of cardiovascular risk were assessed using multiplex technology. Results: Among the investigated species, only levels of Eubacterium nodatum were found to be higher in diabetic patients, while none of the IgG titres differed between the groups, both before and after adjustments for microbial load. Patients with diabetes had significantly higher serum levels of soluble E-selectin ( p=0.04), vascular cell adhesion molecule-1 (VCAM-1; p=0.0008), adiponectin ( p=0.01) and lower levels of plasminogen activator inhibitor-1 (PAI-1; p=0.02). Conclusions: After controlling for the severity of periodontal disease, patients with type 1 diabetes and non-diabetic controls showed comparable subgingival infection patterns and serum antibody responses. Aims: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains a major global health issue, with metastatic cases presenting poor prognosis despite advances in chemotherapy and targeted therapy. Irinotecan, a key drug for advanced CRC treatment, faces challenges owing to the development of resistance. This study aimed to understand the mechanisms underlying irinotecan resistance in colorectal cancer., Main Methods: We created a cell line resistant to irinotecan using HT29 cells. These resistant cells were utilized to investigate the role of the CDK7-MDK axis. We employed bulk RNA sequencing, conducted in vivo experiments with mice, and analyzed patient tissues to examine the effects of the CDK7-MDK axis on the cellular response to irinotecan., Key Findings: Our findings revealed that HT29 cells resistant to irinotecan, a crucial colorectal cancer medication, exhibited significant phenotypic and molecular alterations compared to their parental counterparts, including elevated stem cell characteristics and increased levels of cytokines and drug resistance proteins. Notably, CDK7 expression was substantially higher in these resistant cells, and targeting CDK7 effectively decreased their survival and tumor growth, enhancing irinotecan sensitivity. RNA-seq analysis indicated that suppression of CDK7 in irinotecan-resistant HT29 cells significantly reduced Midkine (MDK) expression. Decreased CDK7 and MDK levels, achieved through siRNA and the CDK7 inhibitor THZ1, enhanced the sensitivity of resistant HT29 cells to irinotecan., Significance: Our study sheds light on how CDK7 and MDK influence irinotecan resistance in colorectal and highlights the potential of MDK-targeted therapies. We hypothesized that irinotecan sensitivity and overall treatment efficacy would improve by inhibiting MDK. Background/aim: Patients diagnosed with advanced metastatic colorectal cancer (CRC) confront a bleak prognosis characterized by low survival rates. Anoikis, the programmed apoptosis resistance exhibited by metastatic cancer cells, is a crucial factor in this scenario., Materials and Methods: We employed bulk flow cytometry and RT-qPCR assays, conducted in vivo experiments with mice and zebrafish, and analyzed patient tissues to examine the effects of the B cell-specific Moloney murine leukemia virus insertion site 1 (Bmi1)-midkine (MDK) axis on the cellular response to anoikis. Bmi1 is pivotal in tumorigenesis. This study elucidated the involvement of Bmi1 in conferring anoikis resistance in CRC and explored its downstream targets associated with metastasis., Results: Elevated levels of Bmi1 expression correlated with distant metastasis in CRC. Suppression of Bmi1 significantly diminished the metastatic potential of CRC cells. Inhibition of Bmi1 led to an increase in the proportion of apoptotic SW620 cells detached from the matrix. This effect was further enhanced by the addition of irinotecan, a topoisomerase I inhibitor. Furthermore, Bmi1 was found to synergize with MDK in modulating CRC viability, with consistent expression patterns observed in in vivo models and clinical tissue specimens. In summary, Bmi1 acted as a regulator of CRC metastatic capability by conferring anoikis resistance. Background: This report describes the oncologic outcomes for patients with advanced ovarian cancer who had bowel surgery performed by gynecologic oncologists (GOs) and compares the outcomes with those for bowel surgery performed by general surgeons (GSs) during maximal cytoreductive surgery., Methods: Patients from six academic institutions who had FIGO stage III or IV ovarian cancer and underwent any bowel surgeries during maximal cytoreductive surgery were eligible for the study. The patients were divided into two groups according to whether bowel surgery was performed by a GO or a GS. In both groups, the GOs were mainly involved in extra bowel debulking procedures. Perioperative and survival outcomes were compared between the two groups., Results: The 761 patients in this study included 113 patients who underwent bowel surgery by a GO and 648 who had bowel surgery by a GS. No discernible differences were observed in age, American Society of Anesthesiology (ASA) score, FIGO stage, histologic type, timing of cytoreductive surgery (primary or interval debulking surgery), or complications between the two groups. The GO group exhibited a shorter operation time than the GS group. Kaplan-Meier analysis showed no survival differences between the two groups. In the Cox analysis, non-serous cell types and gross residual diseases were associated with adverse effects on overall survival. However, performance of bowel surgery by a GO did not have an impact on survival., Conclusion: Performance of bowel surgery by a GO during maximal cytoreductive surgery is both feasible and safe. These results should be reflected in the training system for GOs regarding bowel surgery, and further research is needed to confirm that GOs can play a more leading role in performing extra-uterine procedures., (© 2024. This study introduces a novel paradigm for achieving widely tunable many-body Fano quantum interference in low-dimensional semiconducting nanostructures, beyond the conventional requirement of closely matched energy levels between discrete and continuum states observed in atomic Fano systems. Leveraging Floquet engineering, the remarkable tunability of Fano lineshapes is demonstrated, even when the original discrete and continuum states are separated by over 1 eV. Specifically, by controlling the quantum pathways of discrete phonon Raman scattering using femtosecond laser pulses, the Raman intermediate states across the excitonic Floquet band are tuned. This manipulation yields continuous transitions of Fano lineshapes from antiresonance to dispersive and to symmetric Lorentzian profiles, accompanied by significant variations in Fano parameter q and Raman intensity spanning 2 orders of magnitude. A subtle shift in the excitonic Floquet resonance is further shown, achieved by controlling the intensity of the femtosecond laser, which profoundly modifies quantum interference strength from destructive to constructive interference. The study reveals the crucial roles of Floquet engineering in coherent light-matter interactions and opens up new avenues for coherent control of Fano quantum interference over a broad energy spectrum in low-dimensional semiconducting nanostructures., (© 2024 The Author(s). Background: Although two recent phase III randomized controlled trials showed survival benefits of undergoing secondary cytoreductive surgery for an initial relapse of ovarian cancer, patients who received a poly-ADP ribose polymerase inhibitor (PARPi) as the first-line maintenance treatment, which is currently the standard treatment for advanced ovarian cancer, were not included in those trials. Therefore, determining an optimal treatment strategy, including secondary cytoreductive surgery, in patients whose cancer progresses even with PARPi treatment, is needed., Primary Objective: To determine whether secondary cytoreductive surgery is beneficial in patients who have progressed on PARPi maintenance treatment., Study Hypothesis: Secondary cytoreductive surgery followed by chemotherapy is superior to chemotherapy alone for patients who have progressed on PARPi maintenance treatment., Trial Design: The SOCCER-P study is a multicenter randomized phase II clinical trial. Patients who meet the eligibility criteria will be randomized to either undergo secondary cytoreductive surgery and subsequent platinum-based chemotherapy plus or minus bevacizumab, or to receive platinum-based chemotherapy plus or minus bevacizumab alone. Patients randomly allocated to the surgery group will undergo secondary cytoreductive surgery followed by six cycles of a physician's choice of platinum-based chemotherapy once they have recovered from surgery., Major Inclusion/exclusion Criteria: The major inclusion criteria are as follows: first recurrence of disease with treatment-free interval from last platinum dose (TFIp) ≥6 months and progression during PARPi maintenance or treatment-free interval from last PARPi therapy (TFI PARPi ) <3 months. Nephron loop-vessel countercurrent arrangement in the medulla provides the structural basis for the formation of concentrated urine. To date, the morphogenesis of it and relevant water and solutes transportation has not been fully elucidated. In this study, with immunohistochemistry for aquaporins (AQP) and Na-K-2Cl co-transporter (NKCC2), as well as 3D visualization, we noticed in embryonic day 14.5 kidneys that the countercurrent arrangement of two pairs of loop-vessel was established as soon as the loop and vessel both extended into the medulla. One pair happened between descending limb and ascending vasa recta, the other occurred between thick ascending limb and descending vasa recta. Meanwhile, the immunohistochemical results showed that the limb and vessel expressing AQP-1 such as descending thick and thin limb and descending vasa recta was always accompanied with AQP-1 negative ascending vasa recta or capillaries and thick ascending limb, respectively. Moreover, the thick ascending limb expressing NKCC2 closely contacted with descending vasa recta without expressing NKCC2. As kidney developed, an increasing number of loop-vessels in countercurrent arrangement extended into the interstitium of the medulla. In addition, we observed that the AQP-2 positive ureteric bud and their branches were separated from those pairs of tubule-vessels by a relatively large and thin-walled veins or capillaries. Objectives: This study examined how digital literacy moderates the relationship between ageism experiences and social participation among community-dwelling older adults., Methods: Regression analysis of data from the 2020 National Survey of Older Koreans with 9,920 participants was conducted to identify the association of ageism experiences with social participation in model 1. The moderating effects of digital literacy were examined by adding an interaction term in model 2., Results: In model 1, both ageism experiences and digital literacy were significant predictors of social participation. However, in model 2, the interaction term of digital literacy rendered the association between ageism experiences and social participation non-significant. Although the combination of chemotherapy and radiotherapy has increased the survival rate of patients with nasopharyngeal carcinoma (NPC), certain patients do not respond well to the treatment and have a poor prognosis. Therefore, novel therapeutic drugs and strategies to improve prognosis of patients with NPC are required. As certain plant extracts can suppress the viability of cancer cells, the present study investigated whether oligonol, a polyphenolic compound primarily found in lychee fruit, exerts anticancer activities in NPC cells. MTT, ELISA and immunoblotting were performed to investigate cell survival, cytokeratin-18 fragment release, and the expression of apoptosis and autophagy markers, respectively. Oligonol decreased the viability of NPC-TW01 and NPC/HK1NPC cell lines. Oligonol increased the protein expression of several apoptosis markers, including cleaved caspase-8 and -3, cleaved PARP and cytokeratin 18 fragment. Moreover, it also increased expression of autophagy markers Beclin 1 and LC3-II, as well as LC3-II/LC3-I ratio in both NPC cell lines. Furthermore, treatment with autophagy inhibitors 3-methyladenine or LY294002 significantly increased oligonol-induced viability inhibition in NPC-TW01 cells. Combined treatment of oligonol + LY294002 reduced LC3-II expression and the LC3II/LC3I ratio while increasing cleaved caspase-8 and -3, cleaved PARP and cytokeratin 18 fragment expression in NPC-TW01 cells. Background: Our purpose was to determine the utility of [68Ga]-DOTATATE PET/MRI in meningioma response assessment following radiosurgery., Methods: Patients with meningioma prospectively underwent postoperative DOTATATE PET/MRI. Co-registered PET and gadolinium-enhanced T1-weighted MRI were employed for radiosurgery planning. Follow-up DOTATATE PET/MRI was performed at 6-12 months post-radiosurgery. Maximum absolute standardized uptake value (SUV) and SUV ratio (SUVRSSS) referencing superior sagittal sinus (SSS) blood pool were obtained. Size change was determined by Response Assessment in Neuro-Oncology (RANO) criteria. Association of SUVRSSS change magnitude and progression-free survival (PFS) was evaluated using Cox regression., Results: Twenty-seven patients with 64 tumors (26% World Health Organization [WHO]-1, 41% WHO-2, 26% WHO-3, and 7% WHO-unknown) were prospectively followed post stereotactic radiosurgery (SRS) or stereotactic body radiotherapy (SBRT; mean dose: 30 Gy, modal dose 35 Gy, mean of 5 fractions). Post-irradiation SUV and SUVRSSS decreased by 37.4% and 44.4%, respectively (P < .0001). Size product decreased by 8.9%, thus failing to reach the 25% significance threshold as determined by RANO guidelines. Mean follow-up time was 26 months (range: 6-44). Overall mean PFS was 83% and 100%/100%/54% in WHO-1/-2/-3 subcohorts, respectively, at 34 months. At maximum follow-up (42-44 months), PFS was 100%/83%/54% in WHO-1/-2/-3 subcohorts, respectively. Cox regression analyses revealed a hazard ratio of 0.48 for 10-unit reduction in SUVRSSS in the SRS cohort., Conclusions: DOTATATE PET SUV and SUVRSSS demonstrated marked, significant decrease post-radiosurgery. Lesion size decrease was statistically significant; however, it was not clinically significant by RANO criteria. Premature loss of root canal-treated primary teeth has long been a concern in dentistry. To address this, researchers developed a sodium iodide-based root canal-filling material as an alternative to traditional iodoform-based materials. The goal of this study was to improve the physicochemical properties of the sodium iodide-based material to meet clinical use standards. To resolve high solubility issues in the initial formulation, researchers adjusted component ratios and added new ingredients, resulting in a new paste called L5. This study compared L5 with L0 (identical composition minus lanolin) and Vitapex as controls, conducting physicochemical and antibacterial tests. Results showed that L5 met all ISO 6876 standards, demonstrated easier injection and irrigation properties than Vitapex, and exhibited comparable antibacterial efficacy to Vitapex, which is currently used clinically. The researchers conclude that if biological stability is further verified, L5 could potentially be presented as a new option for root canal-filling materials in primary teeth.

Inorganic arsenic (iAs)-induced urothelial carcinoma (UC) develops into a poor-prognosis malignancy. Arsenic-induced oxidative stress contributes to circadian rhythm disruption altered metabolism. Glutamine anaplerosis is a common metabolic feature of rapidly proliferating malignant cells, in which glutaminase (GLS) is a key enzyme in this process. Therefore, this study intends to determine if arsenic-induced oxidative stress can alter circadian rhythms and promote glutamine anaplerosis. Exonic expression of core circadian molecules (CLOCK, ARNTL, and NR1D1) and GLS in varying grades of UC were assessed using 423 bladder cancer samples from the TCGA Urothelial Bladder Cancer (BLCA) dataset. The levels of circadian proteins and metabolic markers in 44 UC patients from non-black foot disease (BFD) and BFD areas were detected by immunohistochemistry. In vitro and in vivo experiments elucidated the regulatory mechanisms of arsenic-mediated circadian disturbance and metabolic alteration. Public database analysis showed that ARNTL, NR1D1, and GLS exhibited greater expression in more high-grade UC. Strong immunoreactivity for BMAL1, GLS, and low levels of NR1D1 were found in malignant urothelial lesions, especially in arsenic-exposed UC. Arsenic-induced overexpression of BMAL1 and GLS involves activation of NADH: quinone oxidoreductase 1 (NQO1), continuously altering the NADH oscillations to promote glutamate metabolism in SV-HUC-1, T24 and BFTC-905 cells. These phenomenon were also demonstrated in the urothelium of arsenic-exposed animals. The present findings highlight the potential clinical significance of BMAL1 and GLS in UC in the BFD region. Objectives: Our aim in this study was to develop and evaluate a tailored intervention for improving diabetes self-care among people with visual impairment (TID-VI) in South Korea., Methods: The TID-VI program was designed around the barriers, resources, and perceptual factors to promote diabetes self-care in those with visual impairment (VI). A single-arm pilot study was conducted to evaluate the feasibility and preliminary effects of the intervention. Diabetes self-efficacy, self-care behaviours, depression, health-related quality of life, and clinical outcomes (fasting blood glucose, glycated hemoglobin [A1C], lipids, and blood pressure) were measured before and up to 2 months after the 12-week intervention., Results: All 14 participants completed TID-VI. Diabetes self-efficacy, diabetes self-care behaviours, depression, and health-related quality of life showed improvement from baseline that was sustained at 2 months. Although high- and low-density lipoprotein also improved, there were no differences in blood glucose, A1C, total cholesterol, or blood pressure at 2 months., Conclusions: A theory-driven, tailored intervention specific to the needs of adults with VI can produce substantial improvements in patient-reported quality of life and health status outcomes, although the benefits are yet to be confirmed in a controlled study., (Copyright © 2024 Canadian Diabetes Association. Purpose: Characterize geographical trends in ophthalmology research between 2002-2022 and explore associations between study locations, designs, and funding sources DESIGN: Trend study METHODS: Analysis of 4199 publications from American Journal of Ophthalmology, British Journal of Ophthalmology, Investigative Ophthalmology and Visual Science, JAMA Ophthalmology, and Ophthalmology. All original full-length publications from 2002, 2012, and 2022 were included. Exclusion criteria were meta-analyses, literature reviews, and case reports. Main outcome measures were publication years, locations, study designs, and funding sources., Results: Publications from North America (45.8%), Europe (30.7%), and Asia (28.9%) were the most common, whereas Africa (0.8%) and South America (1.4%) were least represented. North American research decreased by 10.6% (p < 0.001), whereas Asian research increased by 25.4% (p < 0.001). The USA contributed 42.3% of research but experienced a 11.3% decline from 2002-2022 (p < 0.001). USA publications received 5.8% more industry funding from 2002-2022 (p = 0.006). China's research grew by 17.0% and had the highest proportion of government (83.1%) or intramural (24.2%) funding (p < 0.001), with government-funded studies increasing by 46.7% (p < 0.001). Japan was less associated with all funding types (p ≤ 0.001). Singapore, Iceland, and Switzerland were top performers when adjusted for population size., Conclusions: Within the examined journals, the USA remains the primary research contributor, with China witnessing rapid growth and Japan facing stagnation. Despite the USA's declining research proportion, North America and Europe continue to maintain a disproportionately high presence in prestigious academic journals. This work investigates the production of hydrogen (H 2 ) and formic acid (HCOOH) through a photoelectrochemical (PEC) approach. Nickel oxide nanofilms prepared by sputtering capped on n-GaN photoelectrodes were employed to achieve simultaneous water photoelectrolysis and CO 2 reduction. The study delves into the role of the nickel oxide layer, examining its potential as a catalyst and/or a protective layer. Furthermore, the influence of nickel oxide layer thickness on the performance of the photoelectrodes is explored. In essence, appropriate nickel oxide thickness is beneficial in increasing the photocurrent of the PEC reaction. The observed improvements in photocurrents and, hence, the production rates can be attributed to the functionality of the nickel oxide nanofilm: mitigating the negative influence of surface defects on n-GaN and facilitating the separation of photogenerated electron-hole pairs at the electrolyte/n-GaN interface. Specifically, PEC cells utilizing the 4 nm-thick nickel oxide nanofilms deposited on n-gallium nitride (n-GaN) electrodes demonstrate a significant enhancement in hydrogen and formic acid production rates. We develop a novel metal contact approach using an antimony (Sb)-platinum (Pt) bilayer to mitigate Fermi-level pinning in 2D transition metal dichalcogenide channels. This strategy allows for control over the transport polarity in monolayer WSe 2 devices. By adjustment of the Sb interfacial layer thickness from 10 to 30 nm, the effective work function of the contact/WSe 2 interface can be tuned from 4.42 eV (p-type) to 4.19 eV (n-type), enabling selectable n-/p-FET operation in enhancement mode. The shift in effective work function is linked to Sb-Se bond formation and an emerging n-doping effect. This work demonstrates high-performance n- and p-FETs with a single WSe 2 channel through Sb-Pt contact modulation. After oxide encapsulation, the maximum current density at |V D | = 1 V reaches 170 μA/μm for p-FET and 165 μA/μm for n-FET. This approach shows promise for cost-effective CMOS transistor applications using a single channel material and metal contact scheme.

Background: Facial infiltrating lipomatosis is characterized by excessive growth of adipose tissue. Its etiology is associated with somatic phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase catalytic subunit alpha (PIK3CA) variants, but the specific mechanisms are not yet fully understood., Methods: We collected facial adipose tissue from both FIL patients and non-FIL individuals, isolated the stromal vascular fraction (SVF) and performed single-cell transcriptome sequencing on these samples., Results: We mapped out the cellular landscape within the SVF, with a specific focus on a deeper analysis of fibro-adipogenic precursor cells (FAPs). Our analysis revealed that FAPs from FIL patients (FIL-FAPs) significantly overexpressed FK506 binding protein 51 (FKBP5) compared to FAPs from individuals without FIL. Further experiments indicated that FKBP5 is regulated by the PI3K-AKT signaling pathway. The overactivation of this pathway led to an increase in FKBP5 expression. In vitro experiments demonstrated that FKBP5 promoted adipogenic differentiation of FAPs, a process that could be hindered by FKBP5 knockdown or inhibition. Additionally, in vivo assessments confirmed FKBP5's role in adipogenesis., Conclusions: These insights into the pathogenesis of FIL underscore FKBP5 as a promising target for developing non-surgical interventions to manage the excessive adipose tissue growth in FIL., (© 2024. Objective: The aim of this study was to identify high- and low-risk subgroups of patients with lymph node (LN) metastasis in presumed early-stage endometrioid endometrial cancer (EC) patients., Methods: Clinicopathologic data of presumed early-stage endometrioid EC patients (n=361) treated with lymphadenectomy between March 2000 and July 2022 were analyzed. None of the patient had definite evidence of LN metastasis in a preoperative magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). A received operating characteristic curve analysis was conducted to define the sensitivity and specificity for the combined preoperative risk factors for LN metastasis, which was determined by multivariate analysis., Results: Nineteen patients (5.3%) had LN metastasis. Multivariate analysis identified cervical stromal invasion on MRI (odds ratio [OR]=4.386; 95% confidence interval [CI]=1.020-18.852; p=0.047), cornual location of tumor on MRI (OR=36.208; 95% CI=7.902-165.913; p<0.001), and lower uterine segment/isthmic location of tumor on MRI (OR=8.454; 95% CI=1.567-45.610; p=0.013) as independent prognostic factors associated with LN metastasis. Patients were categorized into low- and high-risk groups according to risk criteria. Significant differences in the rates of LN metastasis were observed between the two groups (0.4% vs. 22.2%, p<0.001)., Conclusion: Approximately 95% of presumed early-stage endometrioid EC patients did not have LN metastasis. A model using tumor location was significantly correlated with the risk of LN metastasis. Objective: This study aimed to determine the safety and efficacy of the RKP00156 vaginal tablet, a CDK9 inhibitor, in healthy women and patients with cervical intraepithelial neoplasia grade 2 (CIN2)., Methods: We conducted a phase 1/2a clinical trial of RKP00156. In step 1, RKP00156 at a dose of 10, 25, or 50 mg or a placebo tablet was administered transvaginally to 24 healthy women. In step 2, RKP00156 at a dose of 10, 25, or 50 mg or a placebo tablet was administered once daily for 4 weeks in 62 patients with CIN2. The primary endpoints of this trial were the safety of RKP00156 and the change in the human papillomavirus (HPV) viral load., Results: A total of 86 patients were enrolled and randomized. RKP00156 administration did not cause serious drug-associated adverse events (AEs). Although no significant difference in the HPV viral load was found between the experimental and placebo groups, a reduction in the HPV viral load was observed in the 25 mg-dose group (-98.61%; 95% confidence interval=-99.83%, 4.52%; p=0.046) after treatment completion in patients with a high HPV viral load, despite a lack of statistical power. No differences in histologic regression and HPV clearance were observed., Conclusion: The safety of RKP00156 was proved with no serious AEs. This study aimed to explore the relationship between self-reported sensory decline, including poor hearing and vision, and cognitive frailty in older persons. This cross-sectional study analyzed data from the 2020 National Survey of Living Conditions and Welfare Needs of Older Koreans. Binomial logistic regression analysis was performed to analyze the relationship between self-reported sensory decline and cognitive frailty. Of 9,692 participants, 39.8 % experienced sensory decline. The prevalence of cognitive frailty was 15.7 % among participants with poor hearing, 6.9 % among those with poor vision, and 17.9 % among those with combined poor hearing and vision. In our model, adjusted for sociodemographic and health-related variables, the cognitive frailty was significantly associated with poor hearing alone and combined poor hearing and vision. Objective: The sympathetic-parasympathetic (or axo-axonal) interaction mechanism mediated that neurogenic relaxation, which was dependent on norepinephrine (NE) releases from sympathetic nerve terminal and acts on β 2 -adrenoceptor of parasympathetic nerve terminal, has been reported. As NE is a weak β 2 -adrenoceptor agonist, there is a possibility that synaptic NE is converted to epinephrine by phenylethanolamine-N-methyltransferase (PNMT) and then acts on the β 2 -adrenoceptors to induce neurogenic vasodilation., Methods: Blood vessel myography technique was used to measure relaxation and contraction responses of isolated basilar arterial rings of rats., Results: Nicotine-induced relaxation was sensitive to propranolol, guanethidine (an adrenergic neuronal blocker), and N ω -nitro-l-arginine. Nicotine- and exogenous NE-induced vasorelaxation was partially inhibited by LY-78335 (a PNMT inhibitor), and transmural nerve stimulation depolarized the nitrergic nerve terminal directly and was not inhibited by LY-78335; it then induced the release of nitric oxide (NO). Epinephrine-induced vasorelaxation was not affected by LY-78335. However, these vasorelaxations were completely inhibited by atenolol (a β 1 -adrenoceptor antagonist) combined with ICI-118,551 (a β 2 -adrenoceptor antagonist)., Conclusions: These results suggest that NE may be methylated by PNMT to form epinephrine and cause the release of NO and vasodilation.
