NiFe-based oxides are one of the best-known active oxygen evolution electrocatalysts. Unfortunately, they rapidly lost performance in Fe-purified KOH during the reaction. Herein, tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) was loaded on a catalyst/electrolyte interface to alleviate the destabilization of NiFe (oxy)hydroxide. We propose that the degradation occurs primarily due to the release of thermodynamically unstable Fe. TPP acts as a protective layer and suppresses the dissolution of hydrated metal at the catalyst/electrolyte interface. In the electric double layer, the nonpolar TPP layer on the NiFe surface also invigorates the redeposition of the active site, Fe, which leads to prolonging the lifetime of NiFe. The TPP-coated NiFe was demonstrated in anion exchange membrane water electrolysis, where hydrogen was generated at a rate of 126 L h

The unique optical and photoredox properties of heptazine-based polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials make them promising semiconductors for driving various productive photocatalytic conversions. However, their typical absorption onset at ca. 430-450 nm is still far from optimum for efficient sunlight harvesting. Despite many reports of successful attempts to extend the light absorption range of PCNs, the determination of the structural features responsible for the red shift of the light absorption edge beyond 450 nm has often been obstructed by the highly disordered structure of PCNs and/or low content of the moieties responsible for changes in optical and electronic properties. In this work, we implement a high-temperature (900 °C) treatment procedure for turning the conventional melamine-derived yellow PCN into a red carbon nitride. This approach preserves the typical PCN structure but incorporates a new functionality that promotes visible light absorption. A detailed characterization of the prepared material reveals that partial heptazine fragmentation accompanied by de-ammonification leads to the formation of azo-groups in the red PCN, a chromophore moiety whose role in shifting the optical absorption edge of PCNs has been overlooked so far. Detailed understanding of the structural and photophysical properties of polymeric carbon nitride (PCN) materials is of critical importance to derive future material optimization strategies towards more desirable optical properties and more photocatalytically active materials. However, the wide range of structural motifs found in synthesized PCNs complicates atomistic simulations that rely on well defined models. Performing hybrid DFT studies, we systematically investigate formation energy trends and optical properties of PCNs as a function of dimensionality, going from molecular oligomers over periodic sheet models to stacked crystals. Thermochemical calculations that take into account vibrational enthalpy and entropy contributions predict that a mixture of structural motifs including the melon string structure, poly(heptazine imide), and g-C3N4 motifs is stable under typical synthetic conditions. The degree of lateral condensation as well as stacking can reduce the bandgap while out-of-plane corrugation of the material increases both stability and the optical gap. The key result of this work is that already small domains of strongly condensed PCN are calculated to give rise to favorable optical properties. This result reconciles conflicting literature reports indicating that the thermodynamically favorable melon motif has a too large bandgap compared to experiments, while the g-C3N4 structure, for which bandgap calculations are in better agreement with experiments, does not agree with measured chemical compositions of PCNs. Finally, we postulate a new computational model for carbon nitride materials that encompasses the most important structural motifs and shows a bandgap of ca. 2.9 eV.

Solar hydrogen evolution from water is a necessary step to overcome the challenges of rising energy demand and associated environmental concerns. Low-cost photocatalytic architectures based on polymeric light absorbers coupled to highly efficient molecular catalysts might represent an attractive platform to address this issue. However, to-date, our mechanistic knowledge of these systems is still largely underdeveloped. In this study, a molecular molybdenum sulfide hydrogen evolving catalyst, [Mo3S13]2–, is loaded onto polymeric carbon nitride (CNx) photoabsorber by impregnation. The resulting composite shows enhanced photocatalytic activity for hydrogen evolution compared to pristine CNx under monochromatic visible light (l = 420 nm) irradiation in the presence of sacrificial reducing agents. The light-driven dynamics of excitons and charges involved in hydrogen evolution catalysis were studied by a combination of spectroscopic (steady-state and time-resolved photoluminescence, femtosecond time-resolved transient absorption) and photoelectrochemical (open-circuit photopotential transients) methods. We demonstrate that the molecular molybdenum sulfide catalyst, at optimum loading (10 wt% nominal), improves the charge separation in the CNx absorber by facilitating the depopulation of emissive (band-edge) or non-emissive (shallow trap) states, followed by an effectively catalyzed transfer of electrons from the charge-separated state (deep trap) to protons in the solution. The results provide important insights into the complex interplay between polymeric light absorbers and molecular redox catalysts, indicating that the electron transfer to the catalyst occurs on relatively longer (nanosecond – seconds) time scale, as the catalyst had no impact on the ultrafast (sub-nanosecond) photoinduced kinetics in the CNx. These findings are of crucial importance for further development of soft-matter based architectures for solar fuels production.

Heptazine‐based polymeric carbon nitrides (PCN) are promising photocatalysts for light‐driven redox transformations. However, their activity is hampered by low surface area resulting in low concentration of accessible active sites. Herein, we report a bottom‐up preparation of PCN nanoparticles with a narrow size distribution (ca. 10±3 nm), which are fully soluble in water showing no gelation or precipitation over several months. They allow photocatalysis to be carried out under quasi‐homogeneous conditions. The superior performance of water‐soluble PCN, compared to conventional solid PCN, is shown in photocatalytic H2O2 production via reduction of oxygen accompanied by highly selective photooxidation of 4‐methoxybenzyl alcohol and benzyl alcohol or lignocellulose‐derived feedstock (ethanol, glycerol, glucose). Anion exchange membrane water electrolysis (AEMWE) is an attractive technology for the production of green hydrogen and has advantages in terms of cost owing to the use of non-precious catalyst materials. NiFe-based materials are the best-in-class electrocatalysts for the alkaline oxygen evolution reaction. Defining the active sites of NiFe-based materials has been a controversial issue over the past decades. Previously, Ni was regarded as an active site; however, active sites, such as Fe or Ni–Fe dual active sites have been considered in recent studies. Despite the complexity of heterogeneous catalysis, with the aid of in situ/operando measurements and density functional theory (DFT) calculations, Fe was selected as the ultimate active site in state-of-the-art materials. However, the electrocatalyst suffers from rapid degradation in Fe-purified KOH. Herein, we report a catalyst/electrolyte interface engineering strategy using tetraphenylporphyrin (TPP) to alleviate the destabilization of NiFe-based catalysts. The online electrochemical flow cell inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectroscopy proved that thermodynamically unstable Fe liberation was the primary cause of deactivation. TPP acts as a protective layer and suppresses hydrated metal dissolution at the catalyst/electrolyte interface. The stable TPP layer on NiFe elongates the lifetime near the electrode, enhancing the redeposition kinetics of the active site, Fe. As a proof of concept, the role of TPP was validated at the half-cell and 2.4 times suppression of degradation rate in AEMWE scale at a constant current density of 500 mA cm-2. This strategy of using a TPP as a protective layer may serve as a new platform for stable oxygen evolution electrocatalysts.

We observe the influence of Al occupancies in Li sites on the formation process of the garnet solid electrolyte of Li7La3Zr2O12 (LLZO). A direct incorporation of Al is first promoted in a Li-insufficient garnet solid electrolyte during the calcination process of 850 °C and then the cubic phase of LLZO is obtained after successive annealing step of 1000 °C. Comparing to pristine LLZO, Al incorporated LLZO shows less formation of Li2CO3, keeping crystallographic and physicochemical properties. This Al incorporation improves both the ionic conductivity and interfacial resistance to poisoning procedure.

In this study, hierarchically porous carbon nanofibers (HPCNFs) containing numerous electroactive heteroatoms are prepared by controlling carbonization and chemical activation. The HPCNFs have a large surface area of 2862.1 m 2 g −1 , hierarchical porous structure, and 20.6 at% electroactive oxygen atoms. These HPCNFs exhibit excellent electrochemical performance, and their thermal treatment with melamine results in nitrogen-doped HPCNFs (N-HPCNFs) with 9.1 at% nitrogen and improved electrical property (1.8 × 10 2 Ω □ −1 ). The electrochemical performance of N-HPCNFs is better than that of HPCNFs, displaying specific energy of 113 Wh kg −1 , specific power of 105 kW kg −1 , and stable cycle life of over 5000 cycles.

Ternary composites of amorphous carbon nanotube/MnO2/graphene oxide (a-CNT/MnO2/GO) were synthesized by a facile direct redox reaction between potassium permanganate and a-CNT, which was prepared by anodic aluminum oxide template method following co-filtration with GO. Needle-like, 100-nm-thick, MnO2 crystals were homogeneously coated on the a-CNT surface, which was then covered with GO. The electrochemical performance of the resulting MnO2-coated a-CNTs exhibited a specific capacitance of 473 F/g at a scan rate of 5 mV/s, and excellent charge/discharge stability after 500 cycles.
