Indanone-containing compounds are very important components of various natural products, chemical drugs, agrochemicals and functionalized material fields. 1,3-Indanedione is a typical cyclic 1,3-dicarbonyl compound with three contiguous reactive electrophilic and nucleophilic sites. The easily prepared 2-arylidene-1,3-indanediones are active α,β-unsaturated carbonyl compounds and could act as 1,3-dipolarophile, 1,4-dienophile and 1-oxa-1,3-diene, etc. On the other hand, the homodimer (bindone) and cyclotrimer (truxenone) derived from basecatalyzed self-condensation of 1,3-indanedione are also reactive carbonyl compounds. Therefore, 1,3-indanedione and its derivatives can be employed as key substrates in various domino and multicomponent reactions. In this review, we summarized the recent progress on the domino and multicomponent reactions of 1,3-indanedione, especially on our achievements on the synthetic applications for the complex indanone-containing carbocyclic and heterocyclic compounds. Gold nanoparticles were prepared by ethylene glycol (EG) reducing gold chloride under microwave irradiation. The EG-stabilized gold colloids varied from red to blue with increasing amounts of EG, due to particle aggregation. Addition of the macrocyclic polyamine 2,8,14,20-tetranonyl-4,6,10,12,16,18,22,24-octa(1-aminoethylcarbamoyl)methoxyresorcinarene (TNMR) reversed nanoparticle aggregation under microwave irradiation and greatly improved their dispersion stability in aqueous solutions. These effects are likely due to the amphiphilic nature of TNMR, which has a large hydrophilic headgroup with eight amino groups and four hydrophobic chains. Moreover, the large and flexible hydrophilic groups containing more N and O atoms in the TNMR molecule has a strong stretching and penetrating ability in the aqueous solution, and TNMR molecules can easily form a bilayer protecting structure on the surface of gold nanoparticles, which plays a critical role in the color-change process of the EG-stabilized gold colloid. The three-component reaction of thiazole (benzothiazole), dialkyl but-2-ynedioate, and isatinylidene malononitriles in toluene at 110-120 ? in a sealed tube afforded a mixture of cis/trans-isomers of functionalized diastereoisomeric spiro[indoline-3,7'-thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridines] and spiro[benzo[4,5]thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridine-3,3'-indolines] in good yields. Both cis-isomers and trans-isomers were successfully separated out and fully characterized with spectroscopy and single crystal determination. Under similar conditions, the three-component reaction containing 2-(1,3-dioxo-1H-inden-2(3H)-ylidene)malononitrile resulted in spiro[indene-2,7'-thiazolo[3,2-a]pyridine] derivatives. Polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) continue to attract increasing interest with respect to their applications as luminescent materials. The ordered structure of the metal-organic complex facilitates the selective integration of PAHs that can be tuned to function cooperatively. Here, a unique highly twisted anthracene-based organoplatinum metallacycle was prepared via coordination-driven selfassembly. Single-crystal X-ray diffraction analysis revealed that the metallacycle was twisted through the cooperation of strong π···π stacking interactions and steric hindrance between two anthracenebased ligands. Notably, the intramolecular twist and aggregation behavior introduced restrictions to the conformational change of anthracenes, which resulted in increased emission intensity of the metallacycle in solution. The emission behaviors and suprastructures based on the highly twisted metallacycle can be modulated by the introduction of different solvents. This study demonstrates that this metallacycle with highly twisted structure is a promising candidate for sensing and bioimaging applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Five Zn(ii) coordination polymers, [Zn(1,2,3-Hbtc)(1,4-bix)]·0.5(1,4-bix)·H2O (1), [Zn(mocip)(1,4-bix)] (2), [Zn3(1,2,3-btc)2(4,4′-bpy)2(H2O)2]2·7H2O (3), [Zn3(1,2,3-btc)2(bbi)3]2·3H2O (4) and [Zn(dmcaip)(1,3-bix)]·DMF (5), were prepared by hydro(solvo)thermal reactions of ZnO with 1,2,3-H3btc (1,2,3-H3btc = 1,2,3-benzenetricarboxylic acid) in the presence of different N-donor ligands (1,4-bix = 1,4-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, 4,4′-bpy = 4,4′- bipyridine, bbi = 1,1′-(1,4-butanediyl)bis(imidazole), 1,3-bix = 1,3-bis(imidazol-1-ylmethyl)benzene, H2mocip = 2-(methoxycabonyl)isophthalic acid and H2dmcaip = 2-(dimethylcarbamoyl)isophthalic acid). Their crystal structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction analyses and further characterized by elemental analyses and IR spectra. Complex 1has a one-dimensional (1D) infinite tubular structure, whereas 2exhibits two-dimensional (2D) supramolecular networks assembled from 1D chains and 1,4-bix. The three-dimensional (3D) framework of 3can be described as a trinodal 4-connected (42·64)2(65·8)(42·64)2topology, which consists of 2D [Zn3(1,2,3-btc)2] layers and 4,4′-bpy pillars. Complex 4features a 5-nodal (3,4)-connected 3D coordination net with a (6·74·8)2(62·72·82)(6·72)2topology. Complex 5has a rare 1D double meso-helical supramolecular structure. Interestingly, in the complexes 2and 5, the starting 1,2,3-H3btc reagents are converted into new ligands (mocip2−in 2and dmcaip2−in 5) under solvothermal conditions via in situligand reactions. Four novel d10 metal–organic frameworks based on rigid 3,3′,5,5′- azobenzenetetracarboxylic acid (H4abtc) in the presence of auxiliary 2,2′-biimidazole (biim), 1,10-phenanthroline (phen) and pyridine (py) have been synthesized under hydrothermal conditions and structurally characterized. Their formulae are [Cd2(abtc)(biim)2]n (1), {[Cd(abtc)0.5(phen)]4·4H2O}n (2), {[Zn(abtc)0.5(phen)]4·2H2O}n (3) and [Zn3(abtc)(py)4(OH)2]n (4). Complex 1 possesses a one-dimensional (1D) infinite tubular structure by using biim as auxiliary ligand. The structures of complexes 2 and 3 exhibit three-dimensional (3D) (4,4)-connected frameworks with (4284) topologys by employing phen as auxiliary ligands. By utilizing py as auxiliary ligand, complex 4 is a (2,3,4)-connected framework with a (10)(83)2(8,105) topology in which there exists -{Zn-O-Zn}- zigzag chains and 46-member macrocycles which are linked by multicarboxylate ligands to form a 3D supramolecular structure. The structural differences among 1–4 indicate the importance of the auxiliary ligands for the framework formation of the coordination polymers.
