Abstract

This research program, involving French and Italian institutions, aims at understanding how the settling and development of the Etruscan city of Orbetello affected the environmental evolution of its lagoon, and how the evolution of the lagoon affected in turn the economics of Orbetello. In other words, to define how the life of the city has been influenced by its own impact on the lagoon. To achieve this we have followed two lines of research. One is historical, based on the analysis of iconographic, textual and archaeological archives from antiquity to the present day. The other, paleoenvironmental, is based on the analysis of sedimentary archives. The idea is to combine several investigation methods to map the dynamics of sedimentation, by means of geophysical prospecting (imaging of the sedimentary architecture using acoustic profiles) and the study of sedimentary cores. The latter allow the dating of sediments, the analysis of their biological components to reconstitute lagoon palaeoenvironments (ostracods, pollen, dinoflagellate cysts, malacofauna, composition of organic matter), and the analysis of metallic contaminants, highlighting the changes induced by lagoon management and the development of the city.

Abstract

International audience; Within the framework of a Franco-Lebanese mission in the area of Tyre (Lebanon), we were able to improve our knowledge of the relative sea level variations on its maritime facade. Two fish tanks were discovered near the southern and northern capes of the ancient rocky island of Tyre. Both fish tanks were cut into a Pleistocene sandstone bedrock. Small water inflow and outflow channels, also cut into the sandstone bedrock, help to better understand and constrain the variations in relative sea level during ancient times in this area. The first results show that these Roman fish tanks were affected by a relative sea-level rise of ca. 0.50 m. This 0.50 m rise is usually observed around the Circum-Mediterranean since the Roman period. In other words, no tectonic movement appears to have affected this area since Roman times.

Abstract

Fluvial and coastal landforms are indicative of landscape river delta evolution over time and provide clues for understanding coastal adjustments to sea-level and fluvial dynamics fluctuations, tectonic displacements, and extreme waves. We have mapped the surface and sub-surface footprints of fluvial and coastal geomorphological features in the Aceh River delta, northern Sumatra, using imagery dataset, vertical facies logging and helicopter electromagnetic surveys. The result is a geomorphological map at the scale of 1:75.000 which outlines the main features of the deltaic plain, including rivers, tidal and buried channels, fluvial levees, beach ridges, swales, tidal flats and lagoons. We compare their spatial distribution to the geometry of buried sediment bodies, revealed by boreholes and resistivity maps. Buried channel belts and floodplain deposits document the former locations of the distributary channels of the Aceh River. Coastal-parallel beach ridges evidence 7–8 km of asymmetric delta progradation since the mid-Holocene sea-level high stand. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Despite numerous studies focusing on Ancient Roman concrete especially petro-chemical characterization and provenance investigations of aggregates and mortar, less is known about the raw materials used for the construction of harbour structures where concrete had not been used. Recent geoarchaeological investigations of the northern mole of the Claudius harbour (Imperial port of Rome, Portus), revealed ten meters of continuous stratigraphic succession of raw materials employed for the foundation of the mole structure where the water column at the time of construction was reaching more than 16 meters of depth. The material succession consists of volcanic tuffs of different quality and hardness, carbonate and quartz rich sand, fragments and boulders of magmatic rock and Roman sherds. Attenuated total reflectance infrared spectroscopy and principal component analysis have been applied on drilled core sediments and local reference outcrops including tuffs and pozzolana in the vicinity of Rome with the aim to: (i) characterize the mineral composition of samples and (ii) provide insights about the lithological provenance of raw materials. The results revealed that the majority of materials have a close spectra resemblance with “Tufo Lionato” and “Pozzolane rosse” except leucitite fragments occurring at the top of the harbour structure. By providing spectra similarities between the raw construction materials and the local outcrops, this study provides insights about the sources of materials and building strategies during the construction of the Imperial harbour of Rome and therefore constitute a starting point for further archaeological, geoarchaeological and restoration projects.

Abstract

International audience; The western spatial extent of the Claudius Harbour moles in Portus is well established afterthe collection and analysis of numerous sediment cores (Morelli et al., 2001) and geophysicalsurveys (Keay et al., 2009) conducted over the past fifteen years. Recent research focuses ondetermining whether ancient Roman harbour infrastructures were constructive, specificallythe moles that were built to protect the harbour. The objective of this study is to provide ahigher resolution sedimentological reconstruction of the western Claudian Northern Mole(NM) in order to ascertain the effectiveness of the structure and its impact on the regionalcoastal environment. This project will involve examining three sediment cores (CL32-10m,CL31-16m, and CL30-22m) collected around the NM (Figure). A combination ofsedimentological analysis (e.g. grain size and mineralogical identification using Mid-InfraredSpectrometry [MIR]) and biostratigraphic analysis will be conducted as well as radiocarbondating of macrofossils for age-depth modelling. This research is important for understandingthe engineering complexities behind ancient Roman harbours and will provide furthercontextual background for archaeological research in Portus.

Abstract

Determining sediment provenance allows a better understanding of fluvial palaeo‐dynamics, and identifying involved watersheds, at broad spatio‐temporal scales. Conventional approaches for source identification are usually based on the physical, mineralogical, geochemical, magnetic or isotopic properties of sediments. Rapid, non‐destructive and, in well‐established contexts, highly accurate, mid‐infrared spectroscopy is an alternative method for investigating sediment sources. The present research objectives are: (i) to use the mid‐infrared spectroscopy method to discriminate the provenance of fine sediments, by applying discriminant analysis on a large set of reference samples from three different watersheds in the Upper Rhine area (associated with the Rhine, Ill and Vosges tributaries); (ii) to clarify whether the provenance spectra signatures are influenced by riverine depositional contexts (bars versus banks) and, to some extent, by grain size and/or high organic matter content; and (iii) to apply the mid‐infrared spectroscopy – discriminant analysis method to a study of fluvial palaeo‐dynamics and determine the provenance of palaeo‐channel infillings. Three main sedimentary sources, divided into eight sub‐categories, have been characterized by 196 modern reference samples from 78 collecting sites. Discriminant analysis displayed a strong separating power by classifying correctly the origin of samples without any inter‐group overlap, independently from the geomorphological context (bar or bank) and associated slight changes in organic matter contents or grain size. Mid‐infrared spectroscopy – discriminant analysis investigations of the palaeo‐channel infill, complemented by radiocarbon dates and mineralogical data, allowed reconstructing general trends for the local morpho‐sedimentary dynamics over the last ca 12 millennia.
