3. The impact of collaborative technology training on teachers' attitudes towards technology

Abstract

The purpose of this project was to examine how collaborative technology training affects teachers' attitudes towards technology. This qualitative, descriptive project involved nineteen high school teachers. The participants met two days a week for a period of six weeks after school to share ideas and discuss how to use technology in the classroom. At each meeting the instructor gave a short demonstration of a teaching tool or resource that could be helpful to the participants. This was followed by a discussion devoted to specific problems and project ideas brought by the participants. Through the use of surveys and interviews the effects of this type of training on the attitudes of participants towards the use of technology were monitored and described. The results were compiled from self-reported participant surveys given at the start and completion of the project. The results indicated an improvement in participants' attitudes towards technology but showed a decrease in the usage of technology in their classroom.

Abstract

Abstract: The lateral hypothalamus (LH) is a site of integration for control mechanisms of feeding behavior as it has extensive reciprocal connections with multiple intrahypothalamic and extrahypothalamic brain areas. Evidence suggests that blockade of ionotropric γ-aminobutyric acid (GABA) receptors in the LH elicits eating in satiated rats. To determine whether this GABAA receptor antagonist effect is specific to the LH, the antagonist picrotoxin was injected into one of six nearby sites and food intake was measured. Picrotoxin at 133 pmol elicited eating in the LH, but not in surrounding sites (thalamus, lateral preoptic area, ventral tegmental area, dorsomedial hypothalamus, and entopeduncular nucleus). More specifically, picrotoxin injected into the tuberal LH (tLH) elicited eating, but was ineffective when injected into the anterior or posterior LH. We also investigated whether GABAB receptors in the LH participated in the control of food intake and found that neither blockade nor activation of these receptors under multiple conditions changed food intake. Collectively, our findings suggest that GABAA but not GABAB receptors in the tLH act to suppress feeding behavior. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Abstract

It is well established that glucocorticoid administration into a variety of brain regions facilitates memory consolidation of fear-conditioning tasks, including inhibitory avoidance. The present findings indicate that the natural glucocorticoid corticosterone administered into the dorsal striatum (i.e., caudate nucleus) of male Wistar rats produced dose- and time-dependent enhancement of inhibitory avoidance memory consolidation. However, as assessed with a modified inhibitory avoidance procedure that took place on two sequential days to separate context training from footshock training, corticosterone administration into the dorsal striatum did not enhance memory of either the contextual or aversively motivational aspects of the task.
