7. Epidemiology of injuries in elite Women’s Artistic Gymnastics: a retrospective analysis of six seasons

Background Women’s Artistic Gymnastics (WAG) is a sport well known for requiring a heavy and difficult training load from a younger age to reach a high level of performance. This also is associated with an injury risk. Epidemiological studies are thus needed to improve injury prevention strategies.Objective We aimed to determine the injury epidemiology in French high-level WAG.Methods We conducted a retrospective analysis of injury data collected prospectively over six seasons from the 2014–2015 season to the 2019–2020 season among French high-level Women’s Artistic Gymnasts from the France Gymnastics National Centre of Saint-Etienne. We performed descriptive analyses, including the calculation of the 1-year injury prevalence.Results 43 gymnasts were included in this study, representing 111 gymnast-seasons. A total of 285 injuries were collected over the study period, that was, an average of 2.6 injuries per gymnast per season. On average, 91.4% of gymnasts had at least one injury per season. The estimated injury incidence rate was 1.8 injuries per 1000 hours of gymnastics practice. The knee was the most affected joint (16%), followed by the elbow (12%) and the ankle (12%). The most frequent injury type was physis pathologies (16%) and bone injuries (15%). Eighty-eight per cent of injuries required a modification of the gymnastics practice.Conclusions The results of this study allowed a description of the epidemiology of injuries in this population of young and elite gymnasts. This very high injury prevalence supports the need to improve injury risk reduction strategies in WAG.

Abstract

Zolpidem is a sedative drug that has been shown to induce a paradoxical effect, restoring brain function in wide range of neurological disorders. The underlying functional mechanism of the effect of zolpidem in the brain in clinical improvement is still poorly understood. Thus, we aimed to investigate rest brain function to study zolpidem-induced symptom improvement in a patient who developed postoperative pediatric cerebellar mutism syndrome, a postoperative complication characterized by delayed onset transient mutism/reduced speech that can occur after medulloblastoma resection. The patient experienced clinical recovery after a single dose of zolpidem. Brain function was investigated using arterial spin labeling MRI and resting-state functional MRI. Imaging was performed at three time-points: preoperative, postoperative during symptoms, and after zolpidem intake when the symptoms regressed. Whole brain rest cerebral blood flow (CBF) and resting state functional connectivity using Pearson coefficient correlations between pairs of regions of interest were investigated two-by-two at the different time points. A comparison between postoperative and preoperative images showed a significant decrease in rest CBF in the left supplementary motor area, Broca’s area, and the left striatum and a decrease in functional connectivity within the dentato-thalamo-cortical and cortico-striato-pallido-thalamo-cortical loops. Post-zolpidem images showed increased CBF in the left striatum and increased functional connectivity within the disrupted loops relative to postoperative images. Thus, we observed functional changes within the broader speech network and thalamo-subcortical interactions associated with the paradoxical effect of zolpidem in promoting clinical recovery. This should encourage further functional investigations in the brain to better understand the mechanism of zolpidem in neurological recovery.

18. Injuries in French High-Level and National-Level Women Artistic Gymnastics: One-Year Prevalence and Associated Factors

Abstract

Objective: The aims of this study were (1) to determine the one-year prevalence of injuries and their characteristics and (2) to analyze potential injury risk factors in high-level/national-level women artistic gymnasts. Methods: Competitive women artistic gymnasts training more than 10 h per week in a national training center and a TOP 12 club in France were invited to participate in a retrospective study through an online questionnaire about their self-reported injuries and potential injury risk factors (e.g., previous injuries, diseases, weight modification) during the 2020/2021 season. Results: A total of 88 gymnasts between 9 and 23 years old, who trained on average 22.0 ± 6.2 h per week, answered the questionnaire. Ninety-five injuries were reported by 62 (70.5%) of the 88 gymnasts. The one-year injury prevalence was 70.5% (95% CI 60.9 to 80.0%). Gymnasts had, on average, 1.1 ± 1.0 injuries per year. The most common reported injury location was the knee (25.3%), and the most common reported injury type was the ligament (26.3%). Having an injury during the previous season (OR = 9.06; CI 95% 2.66 to 36.73; p = 0.0007) and using a prevention program (OR = 3.97; CI 95% 1.46 to 11.15; p = 0.007) were associated with a higher risk of injury in the multivariate analysis. Conclusions: More than 70% of French high-level/national-level gymnasts had at least one injury during the 2020/2021 season. This high injury rate supports the need to promote injury prevention. However, in the present study, using a prevention program was associated with a higher risk of injury. There is thus a need to improve injury prevention strategies to counter the high injury risk and its potential consequences.

Abstract

Problem: Injuries in athletics are common and may lead to restrictions in athletics participation and performance. We thus aimed to describe the epidemiology (prevalence, incidence, burden, characteristics) of injuries self-reported by the athletes (injury complaint leading to participation restriction (ICPR)) in athletics athletes) over one athletics season. Methods: For this study, we used data from the PREVATHLE randomized controlled trial and only from athletes of the control group who provided 100% of the weekly responses. On a weekly basis, we collected individual information via a questionnaire on the preceding week: number of hours of training and competition, and any ICPR (circumstance, mode of onset and location). The primary outcome was ICPR.Results: Overall, full data sets were available for 100 athletes. One hundred twenty-seven ICPR were reported from 65 athletes over the season, corresponding to a prevalence rate of 65 ICPR per 100 athletes (95%CI: 55.7-74.3). The incidence rate was 8.3 ICPR per 1000h (95%CI: 6.9-9.7), the overall injury burden was 285.6 (SD=619.6) days with an ICPR per 1000h, and the time before the first ICPR was 12.4 (SD=10.4) weeks. Most acute injuries occurred at the ankle (9.4%), while most overuse injuries occurred at the lower leg (15.0%).Conclusion: This present epidemiological study describes in detail the epidemiology of ICPR in athletics athletes over one whole athletics season, representing an additional piece to better understand the extent of injury problem in athletics.Key Words: Musculoskeletal Pathologies, Prevention, Monitoring

Bourgeois interiors in the 19th century became shrines of silence. Social distinction: at the opposite of the noisy apartments in working-class districts, appartements in bourgeois district were quiet. Private archives, patents and practical manuals underline that this construction was material. Silence is won and defended by devices that created systems. They shutt off noises from outside and neighbors and controled interior sounds. On the one hand, bourgeois caulked doors and windows, installed acoustic walls and double glazing and installed intercom systems that put the street at a distance. On the other hand, great care was taken to muffle interior noises. The bourgeois world was hushed in the strict sense: slippers under the feet, underlays under the carpets, mutes on the pianos, upholstery at the doors of rooms... The commandment of the popular bodies of the servants had also to be done in silence. The apartment was crossed by complex systems. Speaking tubes, mechanical or electric wires, bells then silent semaphores silently choreographed domestic life. Silence was a control of the bodies, prohibiting posturing, abruptness and cacophony. Silence and whispers become the condition of the bourgeois intimacy, as if the inner monologue requires the silence of others.

Abstract

Colorectal carcinoma (CRC) is a common disease, the incidence of which is increasing according to Western lifestyle; it remains to have a poor prognosis. Western nutriments are presumed to induce mild inflammation within the colonic mucosa, resulting in the accumulation of DNA alterations in colonocytes through a multistage carcinogenesis process. This suggests that most CRCs are related to the environment. Of interest, fecal microbiota composition has been shown yielding a novel approach regarding how environment changes may impact health and disease. Here, we compare whole shotgun metagenomic gut microbiota of two monozygotic twin sisters, one of whom is suffering from an advance colorectal tumor with a profound disequilibrium of the composition of the gut microbiota due to the overexpression of virulent bacteria such as E. coli, Shigella, and Clostridium species in the colon cancer patient’s feces contrasting with low levels of bacterial species such as Faecalibacterium and Akkermansia usually enriched in the healthy adults’ microbial flora. The disequilibrium in microbiota of the CRC patient’s feces as compared to her monozygotic twin sister is linked to inflammatory and immune cell infiltrates in the patient’s colonic tissue. We speculate on the role of microbiota disequilibrium on the immune-tolerant cell infiltrate within CRCs.

Abstract

Some preliminary thoughts on how to design and develop the DAQ architecture for the Silicon tracking system at the future Linear electron positron collider, are briefly presented here. The proposed structure includes three DAQ levels. The first level is based on a high level processing mix-mode ASIC sitting on the detector. The second level still on the detector is a DSP like interface that will send the processed data to the general DAQ system. Several novel technological aspects are part of this development. 42. How can we differentiate supratentorial tumor recurrence from postradiation imaging changes in children treated for primary malignant brain tumors?

Abstract

OBJECTIVE Distinguishing tumor recurrence from therapy-induced imaging changes (TIIC) on brain MRI in children treated for primary malignant brain tumors may be challenging. The authors aimed to assess the diagnostic ability of multimodal MRI in differentiating TIIC from tumor recurrence. METHODS The authors retrospectively included children with abnormal supratentorial brain MRI findings after treatment for primary malignant brain tumors (regardless of their localization) with complete resection and radiotherapy. A total of 18 patients with TIIC and 25 patients with tumor recurrence were compared, according to structural, apparent diffusion coefficient (ADC), and arterial spin labeling (ASL) imaging data accrued over time. TIIC were defined by a new MRI scan that was stable for at least 1 year or had regressed, or by histopathology findings in specimens obtained when the anomaly was surgically treated. RESULTS The time interval between completion of radiotherapy and the appearance of abnormal brain MRI findings was significantly shorter in the TIIC group compared with the tumor recurrence group (median 6 vs 35 months; p < 0.001). TIIC appeared as foci of increased T2-weighted signal intensity, without nodule, associated with variable contrast enhancement. Tumor recurrence appeared as a well-defined nodule with intermediate signal intensity on T2-weighted images with nodular contrast enhancement. Relative ADC values were significantly higher in the TIIC group (median 1.43 vs 0.88; p < 0.001). Relative ASL–cerebral blood flow (CBF) values were significantly lower in the TIIC group (median 0.27 vs 0.43; p = 0.04). On follow-up MRI, TIIC could progress, regress, or remain stable. In most instances (72%), they decreased in size or remained stable at 4 years of follow-up. CONCLUSIONS MRI features of TIIC include foci of increased signal intensity without a demonstrable nodule on T2-weighted images, high ADC values, and lower ASL-CBF values, whereas tumor recurrence appears as a well-defined nodule with low ADC values and higher ASL-CBF values.

In reaction against the strong standardizing of scholarly journals due to academic rankings and the new economy of publishing, several journals have intended to open for themselves new spaces of experimentation; Modes pratiques, revue d’histoire du vêtement et de la mode (Modes pratiques, Journal of Clothing and Fashion History) is one expression of this desire. Dealing with a topic seemingly limited and marginal – fashion and clothing – our journal intends to enact a social and political reading of society through everyday practices. The familiar topic of fashion brings about conservation with a larger audience. Collateral effect: such a topic leads to revisiting the issue of iconography and, beyond, invites historians to cast a fresh eye on the present time as well as to create new archives for the future.
