Cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection is more common in developing countries and considered as the major cause of morbidity and mortality among neonates, immune compromised individuals especially in organ transplant recipient and other immunosuppressive drug users. Blood transfusion is a major source of infection in such individuals. This study was conducted to estimate the seroprevalence of CMV antibodies among healthy blood donors of different age groups in local population of Islamabad. Total 175 serum samples were taken from completely healthy male donors and all were tested negative for HBsAg, HIV 1/2 antibody, HCV antibody, Malaria and Syphilis. These samples were analyzed for anti-IgM CMV and anti-IgG CMV using the ELISA technique. From 175 samples, 3.4% tested were positive for CMV IgM antibody and 96.5% were positive for CMV IgG antibody. None of the donor was positive for both IgG and IgM antibodies. There was no statistically significant difference in seropositivity of CMV IgG based on distribution of age. As about 96.5% of blood donors were seropositive for CMV, it should be mandatory in blood banks to screen donors blood for CMV. Furthermore there is need to maintain record of CMV negative blood bags and also of CMV negative blood donors and these should only be transfused to immunocompromised patients and to neonate to avoid complications of CMV.

The studies on the essential oil of Carum roxburghianum has been carried out. The essential oil was obtained from crushed seeds, extracted through Hydrodistillation method. The percentage yield of Carum roxburghianum was found 4.7% respectively. Physical properties i.e., colour, odour, specific gravity, solubility, refractive index, acid value and ester value were recorded according to the standard procedures. Chemical composition of essential oil of Carum roxburghianum was analyzed by gas liquid chromatography using co-injection technique. Compounds found in Carum roxburghianum were ?- pinene (0.4185%), ?-pinene (0.152%), myrcene (0.2203%), ?-carene (3.2682%), limonene (16.4321%), ?- terpinene (1.4444%), thymol (3.1047%), linalool (1.0762%), carvacrol (14.6033%), carvone (2.2898%), 1-cadinene (0.1412%), ?-elemene (0.9911%), ?-humulene (0.2705%), elemol (38.5629%) and cadinol (14.4157%). The percentage of coumarins was (2.1346%). The percentage of unidentified components was (0.4746%). The antimicrobial activity of essential oil of Carum roxburghianum were also carried out and the oil showed antimicrobial activity against four gram positive and two gram negative bacteria.

Along with the other medicinal plants Eruca sativa has remarkable potential against various diseases. Present work is based on the estimation of antioxidant potential of dist. Water, ethanolic and methanolic extracts of E. sativa seed oil . On phytochemical determination it was exposed that different plant extracts/fractions contains alkaloids, flavonoids, saponins, tannins, phenols, carbohydrates, steroids and proteins. Its physico-chemical screening was concluded the saponification value and fat value of the E. sativa seed oil. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by using DPPH free radical scavenging scheme. The maximum (30.601.1) anti-oxidative potential was exhibited by aqueous extract of E. sativa seed oil. IC50 was calculated maximum 126.2 in eq. extract of E. sativa seed oil. From current study, it is concluded that this plant seed oil could be used as a source of natural antioxidant and medicinal purposes
