Abstract

It is a pleasure to introduce the discussion about the book ‘Engaging with János K o r n a i ’s Scholarship’, which gives a glimpse of the variety of topics in his extensive life work. I shall focus on a theme that is underlined in the title and runs across most contributions, the system paradigm. Kornai’s contribution is essential and unique here. It combines history and theory, in the perspective of ‘histoire raisonnée’ that Schumpeter saw in Marx. It is centered on economic systems, but the question of the role of polity in these economic systems has been broadened in recent works.

Abstract

This article investigates the mechanisms which enable reaching a compromise during a companion modeling process. The study is based on the application of companion modeling during the implementation of the meager fishery development plan in Mauritania. The elaboration of fishery development plans is embedded in Mauritanian regulations and imposes consulting local stakeholders before enacting new management rules. The companion modeling process consisted in a set of workshops aiming at building a shared vision of the meager industry and its resources. State agents were involved in this process as well as professionals (wholesalers, ship owners and fishermen) and scientific experts. Several interview campaigns were undertaken to analyze the elaboration of compromises, and workshops were observed and analyzed. Based on the assumption that participatory simulation workshops are key moments, our results show that the mechanisms that favor reaching a compromise during a companion modeling process are : social learning, unveiling, modification of the way actors interact and actors’ categorization. This article also investigates the benefits of articulating the elaboration of a usual fishery development plan with a companion modeling process. The latter allows building dialog arena between all stakeholders of the fishing sector. By doing so, it ensures the quality of the deliberation process and favors the acceptance of the plan.

Abstract

Diversity of trajectories of post-socialist transforming economies is a stylized fact of this experience of system change. The paper explores the relations between change in formal and informal rules in historical perspective, discussing new institutional views about rationality of formal institutions and detrimental inertia of informal institutions. It submits that an open and complex approach of the centrality of formal/informal rules interaction may give a better explanation to the multiplicity of national post-socialist pathways.

Abstract

Inhaled corticosteroids (ICS) have been associated with increased risk of pneumonia. Their impact on respiratory virus infections is unclear. We performed a post-hoc analysis of the FLUVAC cohort, a multicenter prospective cohort study of adults hospitalized with influenza-like illness (ILI) during six consecutive influenza seasons (2012–2018). All patients were tested for respiratory virus infection by multiplex PCR on nasopharyngeal swabs and/or bronchoalveolar lavage. Risk factors were identified by logistic regression analysis. Among the 2658 patients included, 537 (20.2%) were treated with ICS before admission, of whom 282 (52.5%, 282/537) tested positive for at least one respiratory virus. Patients on ICS were more likely to test positive for non-influenza respiratory viruses (25.1% vs. 19.5%, P = 0.004), especially for adenovirus (aOR 2.36, 95% CI 1.18–4.58), and respiratory syncytial virus (aOR 2.08, 95% CI 1.39–3.09). Complications were reported in 55.9% of patients on ICS (300/537), primarily pneumonia (171/535, 32%). Among patients on chronic ICS who tested positive for respiratory virus, 14.2% (40/282) were admitted to intensive care unit, and in-hospital mortality rate was 2.8% (8/282). Chronic use of ICS is associated with an increased risk of adenovirus or RSV infections in patients admitted for ILI.

20. Multiple imputation for estimating hazard ratios and predictive abilities in case-cohort surveys

Abstract

Abstract Background The weighted estimators generally used for analyzing case-cohort studies are not fully efficient and naive estimates of the predictive ability of a model from case-cohort data depend on the subcohort size. However, case-cohort studies represent a special type of incomplete data, and methods for analyzing incomplete data should be appropriate, in particular multiple imputation (MI). Methods We performed simulations to validate the MI approach for estimating hazard ratios and the predictive ability of a model or of an additional variable in case-cohort surveys. As an illustration, we analyzed a case-cohort survey from the Three-City study to estimate the predictive ability of D-dimer plasma concentration on coronary heart disease (CHD) and on vascular dementia (VaD) risks. Results When the imputation model of the phase-2 variable was correctly specified, MI estimates of hazard ratios and predictive abilities were similar to those obtained with full data. When the imputation model was misspecified, MI could provide biased estimates of hazard ratios and predictive abilities. In the Three-City case-cohort study, elevated D-dimer levels increased the risk of VaD (hazard ratio for two consecutive tertiles = 1.69, 95%CI: 1.63-1.74). However, D-dimer levels did not improve the predictive ability of the model. Conclusions MI is a simple approach for analyzing case-cohort data and provides an easy evaluation of the predictive ability of a model or of an additional variable.

Abstract

Abstract Background The use of structural equation modeling and latent variables remains uncommon in epidemiology despite its potential usefulness. The latter was illustrated by studying cross-sectional and longitudinal relationships between eating behavior and adiposity, using four different indicators of fat mass. Methods Using data from a longitudinal community-based study, we fitted structural equation models including two latent variables (respectively baseline adiposity and adiposity change after 2 years of follow-up), each being defined, by the four following anthropometric measurement (respectively by their changes): body mass index, waist circumference, skinfold thickness and percent body fat. Latent adiposity variables were hypothesized to depend on a cognitive restraint score, calculated from answers to an eating-behavior questionnaire (TFEQ-18), either cross-sectionally or longitudinally. Results We found that high baseline adiposity was associated with a 2-year increase of the cognitive restraint score and no convincing relationship between baseline cognitive restraint and 2-year adiposity change could be established. Conclusions The latent variable modeling approach enabled presentation of synthetic results rather than separate regression models and detailed analysis of the causal effects of interest. In the general population, restrained eating appears to be an adaptive response of subjects prone to gaining weight more than as a risk factor for fat-mass increase.

Abstract

The document presents an overall summary of the fishing activities of the European and assimilated purse seine and bait boat fleets operating in the eastern Atlantic Ocean over the period 1991-2016. We describe the annual changes in fleet technical characteristics (carrying capacity, size), fishing effort (fishing and searching days), extent of fishing grounds, catches and nominal Catch per Unit Effort by species, as well as the average individual weight by species. Maps are also presented indicating the fishing effort distribution in the Atlantic, as well as the spatio-temporal distribution of European and assimilated purse seine catches in 2016 compared to previous years (2010-2015). 0

Abstract

À la fin du XXe siècle, la théorie du capitalisme de Marx sombrait dans les oubliettes de l'histoire. La chute des systèmes socialistes et l'hégémonie de la doctrine absolutiste du marché semblaient enterrer définitivement une conception jugée dépassée, dont les prédictions sur la fin prochaine du capitalisme avaient été réfutées par l'histoire. La grande crise économique mondiale du début du XXIe siècle ravive la vision critique que Marx avait élaborée, celle d'un mode de production capitaliste contradictoire, dont le développement s'effectue à travers des convulsions périodiques au coût social considérable. Cet ouvrage propose une introduction à la théorie marxienne développée dans Le Capital à travers la critique de l'économie politique". Le capital y est défini comme un rapport social, comme un processus de "fabrication de plus" qui s'autonomise et finit par instrumentaliser les hommes qui le produisent. Deux conflits majeurs engendrent la dynamique singulière du système : le premier oppose le travail et le capital, le second les capitalistes entre eux, dans la concurrence qu'ils se livrent. Ses contradictions s'expriment et se résolvent provisoirement par des crises. Penser le capitalisme aujourd'hui demeure un impératif et un défi. La théorie de Marx, ainsi que sa critique, peuvent encore y contribuer : par cela même Le Capital reste un ouvrage classique.

Abstract

This introduction to institutional economics, follows the history of the field since the early 20th century until the present day. It concentrates on influential authors in the main schools of institutional economics.Institutional economics is defined as economic thought that considers institutions to be relevant for economic theory, and consequently criticizes the neoclassical mainstream for having pushed them out of the discipline; it deals specially with the nature, the origin, the change of institutions, and their effects on economic performance. It is a family of different theories that were initially influential in economics, then lost much of their weight in the middle half of the 20th century, and eventually recovered significant creative vitality and impact in the last twenty years. The book puts the recent developments in historical perspective by showing how important themes like the importance of habits, the role of formal and informal rules, the relation of organizations and institutions, the hierarchy and complementarity of institutions, the evolutionary character of institutional change, have been explored by various authors or schools.

The first is his attitude to normative assessment in conditions of conflict or tension between values, the second is his relation to Marx, with specific remarks about capitalism, inequalities and democracy.
