The abundance and availability of wood waste in the Amazon region pose a great challenge in terms of their use, such as to generate clean and renewable energy. The use of blends of the most different species constitutes a challenge in view of the energetic characteristics that are unknown for the replacement of fossil fuels. Thus, the objective of this study was to investigate the energy potential of wood waste from Amazonian species (Dinizia excelsa and from Manilkara elata, commonly used as lumber) as a way to support the generation of clean and sustainable energy. The wood waste of two Amazonian species were collected during the mechanical processing of logs; the sawdust of Eucalyptus spp. was collected in a biomass company. The contents of total extractives, total lignin, ash, moisture, bulk density, calorific value and energy density were investigated in different blends of residual biomass. The Dinizia excelsa species stood out for presenting higher values of extractives, total lignin, calorific value and energy density. The waste of Amazonian species showed satisfactory characteristics for energy use, which encourages the use of this biomass from wood processing. In addition, forest biomass waste enable the production of various compacted solid fuels, such as pellets and briquettes. HIGHLIGHTS: The use of waste from sustainable forest management is a promising source of bioenergy in the Amazon region. Biomass waste from the species Dinizia excelsa and Manilkara elata were investigated for their energy recovery. Dinizia excelsa and Manilkara elata species have higher energy potential than Eucalyptus sp. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The objective of this study was to evaluate the energy potential of Astronium fraxinifolium and Enterolobium gummiferum wood species that grow in the Savannah of Minas Gerais, Brazil, focusing on the production of charcoal. Two discs were removed at 1.30 m from the ground of three trees of each species, and these were later sampled into wedges that were applied in the analysis of wood characteristics and charcoal production in a muffle furnace. The extractives content and basic density of the wood species were determined, and apparent density of charcoal, ash content, heating value, and energy density of both materials were also determined. The woods under study have potential for application in energy production. Emphasis was placed on A. fraxinifolium, which presented wood and charcoal that was denser, had higher energy density, and achieved greater gravimetric yield. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

EUCALYPTUS ,PLANT spacing ,FOREST products ,WOOD ,WOOD quality ,RAW materials - Abstract
Wood quality results from the interaction between the genotype of trees and the silvicultural conditions to which they were subjected. Based on this interaction, research on the factors that add value to the woody raw material has an impact on the production of various forest products. This study aimed to evaluate the influence of different planting spacings (3×1, 3×2, 3×3 and 3×4 m) on the wood properties of three 4-year-old Eucalyptus clones. The wood of each clone was evaluated based on basic density, dry mass, anatomy, structural chemical composition, ash content and higher heating value. For at least one of the three clones studied, the planting spacing explained the variations in the basic density, dry mass, diameter and frequency of vessels and wall thickness of the wood fibers. Regardless of the eucalyptus clone, the area of vessels, the length and fraction of the fiber wall, as well as the contents of extractives, lignin, ash and the higher heating value of the wood were not influenced by the planting spacing. In summary, the change in the useful area alters the properties of wood in eucalyptus genetic materials in different ways and intensities at 4 years old. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

- Abstract
The objective of this study was to evaluate the mechanical resistance and resistance to degrading agents in particleboard with eucalyptus wood residue and Urea-Formaldehyde, Phenol-Formaldehyde and Tannin-Formaldehyde adhesives at two temperatures (120 ºC and 140 ºC). The panels were produced in the dimensions of 40 cm × 40 cm × 1.25 cm (width, length and thickness, respectively); 10% and 20% of tannin (50% solution) was added to the pure adhesives. The following parameters were evaluated: Modulus of Rupture (MOR) and Modulus of Elasticity (MOE) in static bending, internal bonding, screw withdrawal, resistance to rotting fungi and dry wood termite. MOR showed better results at 120 °C. None of the treatments reached the minimum standard for the MOE, contrary to the internal bonding. The Trametes versicolor fungus caused greater mass loss to the tested panels when compared to Postia placenta.

The present work aimed to analyze the quality of charcoal, aimed at domestic consumption, sold in the following municipalities of the state of Espírito Santo: Alegre; Jerônimo Monteiro and Cachoeiro de Itapemirim. Charcoal characteristics such as apparent relative density, humidity, volatile material content, ash content, fixed carbon content, higher calorific value, elemental analysis were analyzed and the results compared with the parameters required by the State Premium Seal. from Sao Paulo. Only one sample in the municipality of Alegre and another sample in the municipality of Jerônimo Monteiro did not present satisfactory quality for domestic consumption. In the municipality of Cachoeiro de Itapemirim, all samples presented better physical and chemical qualities, on average, when compared to the charcoals sold in the other two municipalities, however, they did not meet the Premium Seal specifications due to the high humidity., O presente trabalho teve como objetivo analisar da qualidade do carvão vegetal, voltado para o consumo doméstico, comercializado nos seguintes municípios do Estado do Espírito Santo: Alegre; Jerônimo Monteiro e Cachoeiro de Itapemirim.
