Esta disertación parte del análisis de 4 casos de violencia masiva ocurridos en el siglo XX chileno y cómo estos casos se han reconstruido en la cultura popular. Son episodios que se han vuelto “emblemáticos” en la memoria colectiva y han sido reconstruidos desde diversos medios, como la televisión, el cine, la literatura o el teatro. Mi propósito es indagar cómo estas “reconstituciones de escena” han generado nuevas interpretaciones y perspectivas en torno a estas masacres. Aproximarme a varias masacres claves del sigo XX permitirá poner en relieve las dinámicas específicas a través de las cuales se va construyendo la emblematicidad de un suceso, aquellas dinámicas que contribuyen a la sedimentación de una memoria colectiva. La memoria colectiva no es estática: se recrea o repiensa en sucesivos presentes en los que hay, por tal o cual motivo, una urgencia para recordar ciertos eventos del pasado. Al estudiar estas cuatro masacres, también espero ofrecer una lectura de cómo una historia —muy larga— de la violencia en Chile se ha ido escribiendo y rescribiendo en el ámbito cultural. Los episodios que serán objetos de investigación en los cuatro capítulos de mi disertación son: la masacre de la Escuela Santa María de Iquique de 1907, la matanza de Ránquil de 1934, el caso Caravana de la Muerte de 1973 y el caso Alto Hospicio de 1998-2001. Estas masacres se han convertido en casos emblemáticos del siglo XX chileno debido a las consecuencias políticas, económicas, colectivas y/o personales que trajeron. En mi investigación quiero ir más allá de estos aspectos solamente, para considerar también cómo la producción cultural participa en y contribuye a “volver emblemática” una memoria. Así, espero mostrar el poder que tienen los medios, masivos o no masivos, en la formación misma de una memoria y cómo aquello que entendemos por “memoria” ha cambiado gracias a nuevas tecnologías y medios que tenemos a disposición.

Within the field of Reinforced Concrete (RC) structures and more specifically, at the design of non-flexural elements such as corbels, nibs, and deep beams, the rational procedure of conception and justification referred as Strut-and-Tie Method (STM) has shown some advantages over classical algorithms of reinforcement computation based on FE analysis (eg. Wood-Armer or Capra-Maury). The STM remains a suitable alternative for the design of concrete structures presenting either elastic or plastic behaviour whose application framework is well defined in concrete structures’ design codes like the EuroCodes and the AASHTO-LRFD Bridge Design Specifications. Nevertheless, this method has the main inconvenient of requiring a high amount of resources investment in terms of highly experienced personal or in terms of computational capacity for, respectively, its manual application or an automatic approach through topology optimisation. The document proposes a light alternative, in terms of required iterations, to the automation of the STM, which starts from the statement that the resultant struts and ties of a suitable ST model can be distributed according to the direction of the principal stresses, σ_{III} and σ_{I}, obtained from a planar or a three-dimensional FE model, Dans le domaine des structures en Béton Armé (BA) et plus spécifiquement, lors de la conception d'éléments non-flexibles tels que les corbeaux, les poutres bayonets et les poutres profondes, la Méthode Bielle-Tirant (MBT) présente des avantages par rapport aux algorithmes classiques de calcul de ferraillage basé sur l'analyse FE (par exemple Wood-Armor ou Capra-Maury). La Methode Bielle-Tirant reste une alternative adaptée pour la conception de structures en béton présentant un comportement élastique ou plastique dont le cadre d'application est bien défini dans les codes de conception des structures en béton comme les EuroCodes et les spécifications de conception des ponts AASHTO-LRFD. Néanmoins, cette méthode présente l'inconvénient majeur de nécessiter un investissement important en ressources humaines ou en capacité de calcul pour, respectivement, son application manuelle ou une approche automatique par optimisation de topologie.Le document propose une alternative légère, en termes d'itérations requises, à l'automatisation de la MBT, qui part de l'affirmation que les entretoises résultantes et les attaches d'un modèle ST approprié peuvent être distribuées selon la direction des contraintes principales, σ_{III} et σ_{I}, obtenus à partir d'un planaire modèle aux EF

This dissertation introduces a novel fast direct solver and preconditioner for the solution of block tridiagonal linear systems that arise from the discretization of elliptic partial differential equations on a Cartesian product mesh, such as the variable-coefficient Poisson equation, the convection-diffusion equation, and the wave Helmholtz equation in heterogeneous media. The algorithm extends the traditional cyclic reduction method with hierarchical matrix techniques. The resulting method exposes substantial concurrency, and its arithmetic operations and memory consumption grow only log-linearly with problem size, assuming bounded rank of off-diagonal matrix blocks, even for problems with arbitrary coefficient structure. The method can be used as a standalone direct solver with tunable accuracy, or as a black-box preconditioner in conjunction with Krylov methods. The challenges that distinguish this work from other thrusts in this active field are the hybrid distributed-shared parallelism that can demonstrate the algorithm at large-scale, full three-dimensionality, and the three stressors of the current state-of-the-art multigrid technology: high wavenumber Helmholtz (indefiniteness), high Reynolds convection (nonsymmetry), and high contrast diffusion (inhomogeneity). Numerical experiments corroborate the robustness, accuracy, and complexity claims and provide a baseline of the performance and memory footprint by comparisons with competing approaches such as the multigrid solver hypre, and the STRUMPACK implementation of the multifrontal factorization with hierarchically semi-separable matrices. The companion implementation can utilize many thousands of cores of Shaheen, KAUST's Haswell-based Cray XC-40 supercomputer, and compares favorably with other implementations of hierarchical solvers in terms of time-to-solution and memory consumption.

El Perú cuenta con una vasta pluralidad cultural, la cual se ve reflejada en los distintos pueblos oriundos de la sierra y la selva. Es por ello que el Estado reconoce a estas comunidades y las busca proteger. Sin embargo, en este mismo contexto surgen conflictos a raíz de que se excluyen a estas comunidades de la toma de decisiones sobre el aprovechamiento de recursos naturales que se encuentran en las zonas donde residen. La anterior contradicción la aborda el autor a partir del tema de la participación ciudadana, no limitándose solo a un análisis jurídico sino también abarcando un plano social. Este es sin duda un artículo que nos invita a la reflexión.

During the last 15 years, due to several social conflicts generated by mining operations in Peru, mining has reshaped its performance from a questionable activity to an accountable one. Corporate Social Responsibility (hereafter CSR) has represented the approach to do this reshaping. In that sense, idea of mining CSR represents how corporations ought to interact responsibly with society. Then, society expects that mining corporations ought to act correctly, guided by the CSR frame that represents the assumption of the correct way to behave. However, mining CSR framework must be accepted for the corporation as well as for society, which might be affected by the corporate actions guided by the framework, mainly the local community. The way mining CSR will be accepted is through dialogue between corporations and stakeholders. Thereby, CSR would imply that corporations should consider what society expects as a responsible performance to be part of the way they ought to act through dialogue and mutual understanding.
