Lithium-ion Batteries (LiB) have a wide range of applications in daily life. However, as they get used over time, battery degradation becomes inevitable, which can lead to a drop in performance and a reduction in the battery's cycle life. The State of Health (SoH) is widely regarded as the health indicator for the battery pack. In Electric Vehicle (EV) applications, the EV user defines the lower limit of SoH when they experience that the battery no longer supports the EV; at that point, the battery is said to be translated from first life to second life. The SoH estimations of Second Life Batteries (SLB) have plenty of uncertainties, such as the availability of battery's previous history, non-uniform degradation in the EV application, variations in chemistry, and charging protocols defined by vehicle manufacturers, making the SoH estimation of SLB a challenging task. This paper discusses the equipment, timelines, computational complexity, health indicators, and list of parameters that need to be considered for the SoH estimation of SLB. The SoH estimation methods are classified into direct and indirect techniques. Direct assessment techniques involve cyclic ageing experiments followed by dismantling the battery for microscopic studies performed by previous researchers that were explained. Indirect assessment techniques include physical and chemical based approach, electrical, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based methods that estimate SoH indirectly through incremental, differential approaches and other parameters such as Integrated Voltage (IV) and Probability Density Function (PDF). Health indicator identifications play a vital role in indirect assessment methods to gain critical insights regarding battery degradation. The challenges involved in SoH estimation are categorized into equipment requirements, parameters, SoH accuracy and efforts required to compute SoH, which are discussed. Of all the SoH estimation methods, comparison of such methods in First Life Batteries (FLB) and SLB perspectives are discussed. To estimate the SoH of SLB, this paper explains all aspects, such as computational methods, filtering data, data sampling frequency, and the need for a specific algorithm to post-process the battery test data. Equipment availability and timelines are interrelated with the cost incurred in the SoH estimation of SLB. The efficacy and practicality of SoH estimation methods that are proposed for SLB is discussed. Fault‐tolerant drives have been gaining increasing attention due to the need to enhance the reliability and robustness of electric drive systems, particularly for safety critical applications. However, in postfault control, it is often necessary to derate the machine, that is to reduce the torque and/or flux currents, to satisfy the current constraints of the power electronic devices. For induction motors, there are different approaches to quantify the current components in postfault operation while maintaining a stable operation within the current constraints. The efficiency enhancement of a faulted drive through flux current reduction is one of the methods reported in literature, however, the details of power components, that is, achievable torque and speed, are not addressed. This study broadly investigates the effect of flux and/or torque current partitioning on postfault capability of polyphase (three and more phases) induction machines in terms of achievable torque and speed. It is demonstrated that the magnetising inductance characteristics, which depend on the machine design and its power rating, have a profound effect on the choice of postfault current partitioning, and hence the machine performance. With the increasing proliferation of variable speed drive, the demand for the more reliable drive is also on the rise. Despite the growing interest on more advanced motors like permanent magnet and flux switching motors, three-phase induction motors (3ph-IMs) are still the main workhorse in the industry and hence the fault-tolerant control of these motor drives remains an interesting and important topic. In this paper, a simple fault-tolerant field-oriented control technique for 3ph-IMs is presented. It is shown that by injecting zero-sequence compensation voltage in a feedforward manner, open-circuit faults can be effectively tolerated. Compared to the previous feedforward fault-tolerant control methods, the proposed approach does not require the knowledge of the magnetizing inductance, which is tricky to be obtained in induction motors. Furthermore, the unified feedforward approach allows the same control structure to be used for different fault-tolerant 3ph-IMs drive topologies, with minor modifications to the feedforward terms. In addition, the effect of inverter non-idealities on the performance of the proposed control method is also highlighted and addressed. The effectiveness of the proposed controller is verified using MATLAB simulation and further validated using experimental tests. With the increasing demand for electric vehicles, reliability in motor drives is an issue of growing importance. Over the years, various fault-tolerant three-phase motor drive topologies have been introduced and their performances have been investigated. Evaluation of the postfault power of a fault-tolerant drive should take into account both the postfault torque and speed, which depend on both the postfault current and voltage limits. Nevertheless, the postfault motor voltage limits are usually omitted from discussion. Furthermore, current limit in induction motor drive is not as direct as that in permanent magnet motor drive, due to the presence of the flux current. In this paper, the performances of available fault-tolerant three-phase induction motor drives have been reinvestigated, taking into account the impact of not just currents, but also voltage limits for both the inverter and machine. By deriving the postfault machine voltage equations, the effects of machine parameters and operating point on the voltage limit and hence the speed limit are explained. Depending on the topology, the motor may be able to run above the rated speed to gain extra power. Abstract This paper presents transformerless high gain boost and buck-boost DC-DC converters (B-BBCs) with extendable switched capacitor cells (SCs), suitable for applications operating at high voltage, above 300 V. Boosting low voltage to a high-enough level, with low duty ratio, is beyond the practical capability of the conventional boost converter. In addition, high duty ratio needed for operation of the boost converter, results in higher component stress that suppresses the overall efficiency of the converter. Therefore, by a convenient integration of SCs with conventional B-BBCs, increased voltage gain is attained with fewer losses. Such converters can be employed for Photovoltaic (PV) systems. The operational principles and modes of operation are analyzed to justify the utility of converters for stand-alone PV systems. Moreover, the proposed modular structure allows to increase SC cells in order to obtain reduced voltage stress on switching components with a higher voltage gain. The formulation of the Vehicle to Grid (V2G) scheme should ideally consider both Electric Vehicle (EV) and building owners' viewpoints. From the building owner's viewpoint, the EVs should be present in the building and participate consistently to deliver the required power. From the EV owners' viewpoint, participating in the V2G scheme should provide economic incentives while not compromising their travel needs. However, those proposed V2G algorithms up to this point in time had not considered any corrections required in response to unplanned changes in the EV travel plan. In this paper, a Two-stage optimization technique is proposed to determine the charging and discharging schedule for EVs participating in a vehicle-to-grid (V2G) programme at an office building. The EV owners' travel convenience is focused with more attention in the proposed model by giving them two V2G options. Firstly, day-ahead optimization (DAO) is applied, based on the expected building load profile and EV behaviour, the optimal charging or discharging control of the EVs is obtained in order to save electricity bills by minimizing the maximum demand of the building. Subsequently, a real-time optimization (RTO) is performed to adjust the V2G operation based on actual vehicle behaviours which usually deviate from their estimations. Simulations are conducted and the preliminary results show that the proposed technique is able to adjust the EV charging or discharging in real-time with the aid of the day-ahead stage. The proposed model manages to capture a new ideal optimal maximum demand point and maintain the EV SOC profile as planned from the DAO stage in real-time when prediction deviation occurs. In addition, a comprehensive cost–benefit analysis in utilizing V2G in peak load reduction is also performed to gain insight into the potential savings and discharging rewards attributable to the building and EV owner respectively. In multiphase machine drives, accuracy of the estimated machine parameters is crucial for effective performance prediction and/or control. While a great amount of work has been done on parameter estimation for three-phase machines, corresponding discussions for six-phase machine remain scarce. It has been proven in the literature that the effect of mutual leakage inductance between different winding layers has a significant impact on the equivalent machine reactance, which challenges the standard separation method of stator and rotor leakage inductances from the measured locked-rotor impedance. In this paper, parameter identification of an asymmetrical six-phase induction machine using six-phase no-load and locked-rotor tests is discussed. A zero-sequence test using an improved equivalent circuit is proposed to improve the accuracy of the estimated parameters. This paper presents an improved look-up table-based direct torque control of the permanent magnet synchronous generator using Vienna rectifier for a wind energy conversion system. A stator voltage model for the system was developed to allow an in-depth analysis of the effect of the switching vectors for the Vienna rectifier on the performance of direct torque control. The developed generator model is dedicated to reducing the complexity of look-up table development. Subsequently, an improved look-up table was designed to enhance the overall performance of the permanent magnet synchronous generator in both torque and stator flux ripples, along with the investigation of the computation delay compensation for the digital implementation. The performance was first investigated through Matlab / Simulink before being further validated using a small-scale prototype and a wind turbine emulator. Both simulation and experimental results obtained were compared with the existing direct torque control approach to verify the effectiveness of the proposed system for wind energy extraction. The results show that the enhanced look-up table generates lower ripples in torque and stator flux while improving their reference tracking, especially during unbalanced DC load scenarios. This achievement can be clearly seen by the lower discrepancy percentage between the reference and actual value in the generated torque and stator flux by 6.35% and 0.47%, respectively. This paper discusses the operation of a multiphase system, which is aimed at both variable-speed drive and generating (e.g., wind energy) applications, using back-to-back converter structure with dual three-phase machine-side converters. In the studied topology, an asymmetrical six-phase induction machine is controlled using two three-phase two-level voltage source converters connected in series to form a cascaded dc link. The suggested configuration is analyzed, and a method for dc-link midpoint voltage balancing is developed. Voltage balancing is based on the use of additional degrees of freedom that exist in multiphase machines and represents entirely new utilization of these degrees. The validity of the topology and its control is verified by simulation and experimental results on a laboratory-scale prototype, thus proving that it is possible to achieve satisfactory dc-link voltage control under various operating scenarios. In this paper, a fault-tolerant three-phase induction drive based on field-oriented control is studied, and an analytical approach is proposed to elucidate the limitations of FOC in flux-torque regulation from the controller perspective. With an open-phase fault, the disturbance terms appear in the controller reference frame and degrade the controller performance when operating in a d-q plane with DC quantities. In addition, the hardware reconfiguration, which is essential to operate faulted three-phase drives, causes substantial change in the way the control parameters vd, vq are reflected onto the machine terminals. An accurate understanding of the feedforward term, by considering the open-phase fault and the hardware modifications, is provided to re-enable the FOC in presence of an open-phase fault. Furthermore, the concept of feedforward term derivation is generically extended to cover multiphase induction drives encountering an open-phase fault whereby no hardware reconfiguration is intended. The proposed method is explained based on a symmetrical six-phase induction and can be extended to drives with a higher number of phases. The effectiveness of the proposed derivation method, which is required to form a feedforward fault-tolerant controller, is verified and compared through the simulation and experiment, ensuring smooth operation in postfault mode. In recent years, coreless axial‐flux permanent‐magnet (AFPM) machines have been gaining attention. Being coreless, these machines do not experience eddy current (hence hysteresis losses) and has lower cogging torque leading to higher efficiency. However, limitations such as high leakage flux and weak mechanical structure impede its wide application. The results of a systematic review on coreless AFPM machine research is presented, wherein a total of 123 studies have been selected through the Preferred Reported Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta‐Analysis (PRISMA) protocol. About 55% of the articles have been published between 2017 and 2021, indicating recent attention of the researchers on coreless AFPM machines. More than 70% (87 out of 123) of the records have been published by IEEE, which proves the quality and acceptance of the studies. In two‐thirds (77 out of 123) of the studies, single‐stator double‐rotor has been adopted as the machine topology, and in 71.8% (84 out of 123) cases, trapezoidal shape magnets have been used in conventional array. The key research areas on coreless AFPM identified through this review are to produce an efficient design for multiphase and multi‐stage topology and develop lightweight rotor and stator structures. Stevia rebaudiana cultivated in non-native tropical conditions tends to flower early, halting vegetative growth, resulting in lower biomass and yields of its valued steviol glycoside metabolites. While indoor cultivation allows manipulation of artificial lighting to mimic optimal conditions, it introduces an additional energy cost. The study objectives were to assess photoperiod manipulation as a lighting strategy to increase overall biomass and metabolite yields as well as to improve the efficacy of the electrical energy used for indoor cultivation of Stevia rebaudiana in non-native environmental conditions. Stevia was grown under artificial lighting with red, green, and blue wavelengths with photoperiods of 8 h, 12 h, 16 h, and intermittent light amounting to 16/24 h, each with a constant Daily Light Integral (DLI) of 7.2 mol m−2 day−1. Yield was measured as leaf dry weight biomass in combination with Liquid chromatography–mass spectrometry (LCMS) analysis of Stevioside and Rebaudioside A content. The photon flux density of the artificial and natural light as measured by a spectroradiometer, and the energy use data collected with a three-phase power quality logger, were compared for each treatment tested and to that from plants grown under natural light irradiation in a greenhouse. Yield and energy data were used to determine the efficacies of the lighting systems tested. Stevia plants under a continuous 16-h photoperiod (16H) had the highest productivity, resulting in the highest biomass accumulation and metabolite concentrations. The Stevioside and Rebaudioside A yields per plant were 975% higher than those obtained under natural daylight and day-neutral tropical photoperiod. Overall energy use and photon conversion efficacies were also highest under 16H at 65.10 g kWh−1 for biomass accumulation, 12.40 g kWh−1 for metabolite yields and 7.5 mg mol−1 for photon conversion. These findings support the application of photoperiod manipulation as a viable approach to increase productivity and improve energy use efficacies for indoor cultivation of Stevia rebaudiana plants under artificial lighting in non-native environments with the 16-h photoperiod under red and blue artificial light supplemented with green spectrum as the best option. Among different types of six-phase machines, extensive works have been done on pulse-width modulation (PWM) methods for asymmetrical six-phase machine and symmetrical six-phase machine with 2-isolated neutral connection. However, very limited work has been done on PWM technique for symmetrical six-phase machine with single isolated neutral, i.e. S6-1N though it has higher degree of freedom in post-fault operation. For S6-1N, the presence of zero-sequence plane complicates design of PWM methods. In this paper, the implementations of different PWM schemes for S6-1N machine are discussed. It is shown that zero-sequence injection method can be easily extended for S6-1N machine to yield discontinuous PWM. Abstract In this paper, a comparative analysis has been presented on various topologies of isolated and non-isolated DC-DC converters. Here, the major focus remains on transformer-less (TL) DC-DC converters, based on the conventional basic boost converter. In addition, to attain high voltage gain, a classification of non-isolated converters based on extendable and non-extendable design has been presented. For comparative and theoretical analysis, the parameters chosen are the number of components utilized by each converter topology, high voltage gain offered, voltage stresses on each component involved and the efficiency of the high gain topologies. For the converters under discussion, operation under ideal and non-ideal conditions has also been highlighted. Based on this study, authors present a guide for the reader to identify various high voltage gain topologies for photovoltaic (PV) systems. Variable switching frequency pulse width modulation (VSF PWM) has been proposed in the past to optimize the total harmonic distortion (THD) performance and switching losses of an inverter. Nevertheless, such VSF PWMs give rise to switching harmonics which vary across a wide frequency spectrum, where the lower frequencies could resonate with the filter while the upper frequency could exceed the maximum switching frequency. This complicates VSF PWM design, restricting their practical uses. In this paper, a confined band VSF PWM (CB-VSF PWM) for a single-phase inverter with an LCL filter is presented. By confining the switching frequencies within a practical band, the design of the filter becomes easier while maintaining low current THD with low switching losses. The choices of the upper and lower bands of the proposed VSF are defined and the design criterion is introduced. It is found that the proposed method allows reduction in switching losses as well as reduction in current THD when the effect of the LCL filter is taken into consideration. The advancements in smart grid technologies had brought forth the prospect of self-healing distribution grid through intentional islanding, aided by the steadily rising penetration of inverter-based distributed generations (IBDGs). Adaptive protection is the key enabler for this resilient grid architecture. For cost-effectiveness, overcurrent relays (OCRs) with adaptive features had been proposed, often with the sensitivity problem due to low short-circuit current magnitude from the IBDG taken into consideration and largely addressed. However, apart from this widely discussed sensitivity problem, there is an underlying issue on selectivity of the OCR which is frequently disregarded when designing an adaptive overcurrent protection scheme for IBDG dominated microgrid. This selectivity problem is mainly caused by the current diversion to load during fault, which is often disregarded when performing OCR grading for a conventional grid. In this paper, this selectivity problem of the OCR is discussed in depth through a comparative study of conventional grid and a modern IBDG dominated grid. The coordination time interval margin violations problems are demonstrated through theoretical calculations and real-time hardware-in-the-loop experiments. This research aims to provide better insights into the selectivity problem as a step towards achieving a cost-effective yet reliable overcurrent-based adaptive protection for IBDG dominated microgrid. Despite the general agreement about the benefits that electrification brings to well-being, few studies have concentrated on the actual effects of electrification on the diverse non-economic dimensions of quality of life (QoL). In a multi-disciplinary and cross-institutional effort, a group of natural and social scientists have studied three electrification schemes (grid extension, centralised hybrid, and solar home systems) in four rural villages in Malaysia, Cambodia, and Myanmar. Using a novel approach with scales on several QoL measures (self-reported QoL and five QoL sub-domains; psychological, physical, social, and economic well-being; occupations; and total active time), this article presents an analysis of the effects of rural electrification on human well-being. With original data surveyed in the villages through a baseline prior to electrification and an endpoint several months after, the effects were examined through suitable statistical methods. Overall, we confirmed a positive effect of electrification in self-reported QoL levels as well as psychological, physical, and social well-being. There was, however, a certain reduction recorded in economic well-being. In the sub-domains of QoL, there were no changes after electrification in satisfaction levels concerning time use, time spent alone, housing, and personal safety, but a positive effect on satisfaction levels was observed in cooking. Finally, in terms of occupation, we observed no changes in the total hours dedicated to work and no prolonged active time on usual activities in the household. The findings provide support to the hypothesis of a positive effect on general QoL from electrification, but also suggest more precisely that, for specific QoL sub-domains, the effect might not necessarily exist, or in fact, may be negative. Fault current studies are often required to determine the proper settings for the overcurrent relays. The conventional synchronous generators are known to exhibit high current magnitude during fault, which present an ideal scenario for fault isolation using the cost-effective overcurrent relays. On the other hand, the fault current magnitude from renewable based generation such as solar photovoltaic (PV) is intentionally limited due to the constraints in the power electronic components. Therefore, dispute pertaining to the feasibility of overcurrent relay in inverter based distributed generations (IBDG) applications arises. These disputes mainly arise due to the unavailability of firm understanding of the fault current characteristics from the IBDGs. The problem is further compounded with the availability of numerous possible fault current controls, where various fault current characteristics can be obtained from the IBDGs. In light of this problem, this paper aims to establish the various possible IBDG fault current characteristics, with special attention paid to compliance to the latest grid codes requirements such as low voltage ride through (LVRT) with reactive current injection (RCI). Five different types of RCI controls are analyzed as follows: variable active current control, constant active power control, constant reactive power control, constant active current control, and maximum current control. From the established fault current characteristics in this paper, the disputes pertaining to the feasibility of overcurrent relay for IBDG applications can be resolved and the suitable types of RCI control that allow satisfactory performance of overcurrent relays can be identified. Recently, reduced common-mode voltage (CMV) pulsewidth modulation (RCMV-PWM) methods have been proposed to reduce the leakage current in three-phase transformerless photovoltaic (PV) systems. However, most of these studies only focus on leakage current elimination and neglect the overall performance of the PV systems on issues such as cost, voltage linearity, dc-link current ripples, and harmonic distortion. In this paper, a three-phase transformerless inverter, adapted from the single-phase H5 topology, is investigated. Since the H5 topology has been conventionally developed for a single-phase system, its adaptation to the three-phase system requires the development of corresponding three-phase modulation techniques. Hence, modulation techniques are proposed based on conventional PWM. The performances of the proposed PWM, in terms of CMV, leakage current, voltage linearity, output current ripples, dc-link current ripples, and harmonic distortion are studied and discussed via simulation and experiment. Agent-based evolutionary game theory studies the dynamics of the autonomous agents. It is important for application that relies on the agents to perform the automated tasks. Since the agents make their own decision, therefore the stability of the interaction needs to be comprehended. The current state of the art in agent-based replicator dynamics are piecewise and state-coupled replicator dynamics which focus on joint-action single-state reward. This paper introduces additional reward parameter to the learning algorithm, extends the replicator dynamics to joint-action transition-state reward and shows that it can be changed to single-state reward and independent-action reward. The replicator equation is expressed based on the tree diagram approach and is verified with the numerical simulation in a two states battle of sexes coordination game for various types of rewards. The numerical results are consistent with the phase portraits generated by the replicator equation and are able to provide some general insights to the coordination game such as the number of convergence points, the rate of convergence and the effect of initial points on the convergence. As the development of renewable distributed generations (DGs) is growing rapidly, the autonomous self-healing microgrid had emerged as an effective solution for integrating renewable DGs in the distribution networks. However, before the autonomous self-healing microgrid can be realized, one of the main issues that needs to be resolved is the ability to utilize the most cost-effective protection system—overcurrent relays—to achieve the goal. However, the overcurrent relay is insensitive to the limited fault current contributed by the inverter-based distributed generation (IBDG). Therefore, this paper will propose a novel inverter fault current control with a reactive current injection (RCI) that injects the correct fault current vector, albeit with a limited magnitude, for detection by the cost-effective directional overcurrent relay. This paper will also evaluate the performances of the different RCI controls in delivering an efficient self-healing microgrid protection based on a directional overcurrent relay. The proposed self-healing protection scheme is tested with both a simple distribution test network and also the IEEE 16 bus test system, considering random system parameters like variations in IBDG location, fault location, load capacity and load power factor.
