Abstract

International audience; A reliable design of geotechnical structures requires an appropriate estimation and consideration of the parameter's uncertainties. Traditional design codes account for the uncertainties by using conservative factors. This paper presents a reliability-based analysis of the seismic internal stability of geosynthetic reinforced earth retaining walls. The deterministic computation of the structure safety factor is based on the upper bound theorem of limit analysis. The discretization technique is used to generate the rotational failure mechanism so that the seismic loading can be implemented by the pseudo-dynamic approach. The considered uncertainties involve the soil shear strength parameters, seismic loading and reinforcement strength parameters. The Sparse Polynomial Chaos Expansion combined with Monte Carlo Simulation is the reliability method considered to carry out the probabilistic analysis. The influence of the correlation between the soil parameters and the random variables distribution type on the probabilistic results are investigated and discussed. A global sensitivity analysis is performed in order to specify the contribution of each random variable to the reinforced earth retaining wall safety factor.

Abstract

This paper discusses the filling of estuary problem which can be defined as the accumulation of fine materials that causes the invasion of muds all over the estuary and that has a direct effect on the fauna and flora in the river, fishing, swimming and the beauty of the landscapes. All this consequences have social, environmental and economic impact. In the context of the study of this phenomena, analysis of the structuration mechanisms of sedimentary materials in estuaries is carried out in order to better understand the fillings estuarine areas and specially to consider sustainable solutions of “cleansing” of these areas. The Rance estuary is particularly targeted by the study. The aim is to provide answers on the rheological behavior of natural vessels by distinguishing the most significant scales to detect structural factors influencing the rheological parameters.

Abstract

The slope of Dahr El Baidar located on the central mountain of Lebanon hosts a section of the Arab Highway that is under construction to connect Beirut to neighboring Arab countries. This slope has experienced several failures; yet most involved geotechnical companies have investigated the slope with classical geotechnical procedures. In this paper, the analysis of the slope is performed using an integrated geo-assessment approach to identify the principal causes of failure and understand its dynamic behavior. The study includes geological, geophysical and geotechnical soil characterization of the designated area. The geological analysis reveals the presence of faults in the vicinity, in addition to a layer of weak clay at the surface. The geotechnical investigation is based on the interpretation of several boreholes. Geophysical tests are performed using ambient noise vibration technique in order to reveal the resonant frequency and thickness of the soil deposit material. A correlation between geotechnical and geophysical tests was used to establish soil properties in the studies. The above data is used towards a better understanding of the cause and occurrence of the failing zone. A dynamic analysis is conducted to determine the slope amplification and compare the simulated frequencies with the measured ones.

Abstract

Dans cet article, une partie d’une étude dédiée au comportement rhéologique de mélanges liquide/solides est proposée. La phase solide est composée de sédiments prélevés dans l’estuaire de la Rance (35). La phase liquide est de l’eau du robinet. Un protocole de caractérisation est mis en oeuvre pour éviter le vieillissement au cours de la caractérisation. Les effets de l’âge des suspensions, la composition granulométrique et le taux de cisaillement sont recherchés à fraction volumique solide fixée via une caractérisation du comportement visco-plastique.
