The cornerstone in the development of different applications of the Chemical Looping (CL) technology is the oxygen carrier material that transfers the oxygen. We evaluate the performance of manganese oxide doped with TiO2 to reinforce the release of molecular oxygen and regeneration at high temperatures (850–950 °C). Different manganese-titanium mixed oxides with mass fractions of titanium oxide from 0 to 50 wt.% were considered and prepared by granulation. The sample with 20 wt.%. TiO2 (MnTi_20) showed better oxygen release/regeneration capabilities than pure manganese oxide under similar conditions and was selected for further development. To evaluate the performance of MnTi_20, long tests (200 cycles) were carried out in a TGA to evaluate the chemical and mechanical stability of the sample. Additionally, MnTi_20 was tested in a batch fluidized bed reactor to evaluate its oxygen uncoupling capability and its reactivity with the main combustion gases (H2, CO, and CH4) as well as its fluidization properties. MnTi_20 is capable of regenerating Mn3O4 to Mn2O3 at 950 °C and maintains its reactivity with the redox cycles. No fluidization problems were encountered during almost 60 h of continuous fluidization, and a lifetime of 2500 h was estimated for this oxygen carrier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The present study investigated the performance of iron ore mixed with carbide slag (CS) as oxygen carrier in a batch-fluidized bed reactor using Datong bituminous coal as fuel. The effects of mixing mass ratio and reaction temperature on the CLC process of coal were investigated. The results showed that iron ore mixed with carbide slag accelerated the CLC process of coal compared with iron ore alone. Reaction temperature had a crucial effect on carbon conversion of coal, but higher than 900°C resulted in a decreased reactivity of CS-mixed oxygen carrier. Multiple redox cycle tests were also conducted to study the stability of CS-mixed oxygen carrier. It was found that though a continuing decreasing reactivity was observed for CS-mixed oxygen carrier, it still has higher CO2 yield and lower CO yield than those of undecorated one. SEM analysis revealed that sintering occurred on the surface of CS-mixed oxygen carrier, resulting in the deterioration of reactivity. The reason for the promoted performance of CS-mixed iron ore seems to be the catalytic effect of carbide slag on the water-gas shift reaction, converting CO to H2, for H2 is more reactive toward iron ore. Chemical looping combustion (CLC) emerges as a cost-effective CO2 capture technology, demonstrating high competitiveness for both industrial and energy applications. This study explores the synthesis of a Cu-based, praseodymium (Pr)-modified gamma-alumina-supported (20CuPA) oxygen carrier (OC) through the wet impregnation method and investigates its performance in CLC. The characteristics of the synthesized OC were investigated using field emission scanning electron microscopy, energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy, temperature-programmed reduction analysis, and X-ray diffraction analysis. The CLC of methane gas was performed in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TA-Q50). The oxygen transport capacity (OTC) of the 20CuPA-based OC was investigated for 10 redox cycles. The impact of temperature and time as process variables in determining the OTC of OCs was studied. The TGA results indicated that the most important factor influencing the optimization of the OTC of OCs was time. In comparison to time, temperature had less of an impact on the OTC of 20CuPA-OC. The maximum OTC of 20CuPA-OC, which was 0.0546 mg of O2/mg of OC, was reached using optimized process variables, including a temperature of 800 °C and a time of 3 min. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Poor-quality petroleum coke is often used as fuel because of its high carbon content and calorific value, but its combustion process will emit a lot of CO2. Using the petroleum coke chemical looping combustion (CLC) for power generation is an effective way to realize its clean utilization, but the process still faces the problem of low conversion rate of petroleum coke. Mixing petroleum coke with coal as fuel can significantly improve the reactivity of petroleum coke. Therefore, this study established a CLC power generation system with a mixture fuel of petroleum coke and coal at a mass ratio of 1:1 and coal as the only fuel. The amount of oxygen carrier circulation required for a full reaction of decomposed fuel in the fuel reactor and the air flow required for the regeneration of oxygen carrier in the air reactor were optimized. The novel system was compared with a petroleum coke CLC power generation system in terms of system efficiency, life cycle fossil energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions. The results show that the optimum mass ratios of circulating oxygen carrier to fuel required in the petroleum coke-coal and coal CLC power generation systems are 26.43 and 24.19, while their optimum mass ratios of air to fuel required for regenerating oxygen carrier are 9.22 and 8.43. The energy efficiencies of the new CLC power plant are 36.77%, which are 8.96 and 2.20 percentage points higher than that of the CLC power plant using petroleum coke and coal as fuel alone. The life cycle fossil energy consumption and the greenhouse gas emissions of the petroleum-coal hybrid CLC power plant are 9.52 GJ/MWh and 302.76 kg CO2 eq/MWh, which are 2.56 and 0.27 GJ/MWh, 35.27 and 4.03 kg CO2 eq/MWh lower than that of petroleum coke and coal power plants alone. The energy efficiency of the power generation system can be significantly increased by mixing petroleum coke with coal to improve the combustion conversion rate of petroleum coke, while the life cycle fossil energy consumption and greenhouse gas emissions of the power generation system can be reduced.

This study focuses on the S-to-H2SO4 industry by investigating the chemical looping combustion (CLC) process utilizing Fe-based and Cu-based oxygen carriers (OCs), which are widely applied in CLC technology. The primary objective is to conduct combined CLC reactions of these two metal carriers in a three-zone temperature tube furnace, aiming to achieve a higher SO2 yield than what is attainable by reacting a single metal carrier with S. The investigation reveals promising industrial applications, offering potential benefits in terms of reducing equipment costs, enhancing energy efficiency, and lowering the emissions of the H2SO4 production industry. Through a series of experiments, the study examines the effects of reaction temperature and material molar ratios on SO2 generation. The solid reaction products were characterized using X-ray diffraction (XRD), scanning electron microscopy with energy-dispersive spectroscopy (SEM-EDS), and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). The experimental results indicate that the combined Cu-based and Fe-based OCs exhibit a higher SO2 yield during the reduction stage compared to using either Fe-based or Cu-based OCs independently. Under optimal conditions, with a carrier gas flow rate of 300 mL/min, an Fe2O3/S molar ratio of 6:1 in the second temperature zone, and a reaction temperature of 900 °C, the total SO2 yield in the third temperature zone reached approximately 85%. This was achieved at a reaction temperature of 850 °C, with an Fe2O3/S molar ratio of 6:1 in the first half of the zone and a CuO/S molar ratio of 12:1 in the second half of the zone. SEM-EDS analysis further revealed that the combined OCs showed no significant signs of agglomeration or sintering after 10 cycles of the reaction. However, Cu-based carrier particles increased in size by 50%, while Fe-based carrier particles remained relatively stable. Additionally, the low mass-to-atom ratio of S on the surface of OCs after the cyclic reaction suggests that the reduced-state OCs can be fully oxidized and regenerated following the release of SO2 during oxidation. Chemical looping combustion is a highly efficient CO2 separation technology without direct contact between combustion air and fuel. A metal oxide is used as an oxygen carrier in dual fluidized beds to generate clean CO2. The use of biomass is the focus of current research because of the possibility of negative CO2 emissions and the utilization of biogenic carbon. The most commonly proposed OC are natural ores and residues, but complete combustion has not yet been achieved. In this work, the direct utilization of CLC exhaust gas for methane synthesis as an alternative route was investigated, where the gas components CO, CH4 and H2 are not disadvantageous but benefit the reactions in a methanation step. The whole process chain, the coupling of an 80 kWth pilot plant with gas cleaning and a 10 kW fluidized bed methanation unit were for this purpose established. As OC, ilmenite enhanced with limestone was used, combusting bark pellets in autothermal operation at over 1000 °C reaching high combustion efficiencies of up to 91.7%. The fuel reactor exhaust gas was mixed with hydrogen in the methanation reactor at 360 °C and converted with a methane yield of up to 97.3%. The study showed especially high carbon utilization efficiencies of 97% compared to competitor technologies. Based on the experimental results, a scale-up concept study showed the high potential of the combination of the technologies concerning the total efficiency and the adaptability to grid injection. Objective Molten catalytic methane pyrolysis coupled with chemical looping combustion technology was developed, and natural gas was used as material gas. It can produce hydrogen along with power generation and solid carbon. Methods The process was simulated by Aspen Plus, and techno-economic feasibility in terms of economic benefits was analysed. The main influencing factors of methane conversion rate, pyrolysis reaction temperature, and PSA separation efficiency were discussed. Results When the feedstock was 600 kmol/h, the system could produce 956 kmol/h hydrogen and 503 kmol/h solid carbon, and the system generating capacity was 9.43 MW. The CO2 capture amount was 208 kmol/h while the capture ratio was 99.75%. The system performance was examined, and the results showed that the total system efficiency was 77.044%, wherein the hydrogen efficiency was 41.059%, the rate of solid carbon production was 31.453%, and the electricity efficiency was 4.532%. Conclusion It was concluded that improving methane conversion and PSA efficiency, and reducing thermal cracking reaction temperature were significantly helpful in increasing product yield and total system efficiency. Indirect combustion with the chemical looping combustion (CLC) of solid oxygen carriers is one of the most promising technologies for capturing carbon dioxide (CO2) in energy production from fossil fuels since the separation of the generated CO2 is inherent to the process itself. Therefore, the cost associated with capturing this gas will be significantly reduced. This technology transfers oxygen from air to fuel through a metal oxide that acts as an oxygen carrier, avoiding direct contact between air and fuel. This oxygen carrier circulates in a fluidized bed reactor called a reduction reactor and an oxidation reactor. (1) This research work has focused on evaluating the behavior of oxygen carriers based on the original and improved manganese mineral (copper-impregnated mineral) named for this study, OXMN009 and OXMN009P, respectively. (2) Equilibrium experiments were carried out on a thermogravimetric balance (TGA) to evaluate the kinetic behavior of these oxygen transporters OXMN009 and OXMN009P, using the gases methane (CH4), carbon monoxide (CO), and hydrogen (H2). (3) The enhanced solid oxygen carrier OXMN009P exhibited good performance for the CLC process with gaseous fuels in terms of reactivity and combustion efficiency, having high reactivity and oxygen transfer properties due to copper impregnation. (4) The results show that OXMN009P has comparable reactivity to other manganese-based materials reported in the literature. It may be an effective option for carbon dioxide capture, as it uses metal oxides as the oxygen transporters (TO). (5) These oxygen transporters, OXMN009 and OXMN009P, are used in a cyclic process that prevents the formation of nitrogen oxides by keeping the air and fuel separate. (6) Thermogravimetric balance (TGA) experiments were conducted to evaluate the kinetic behavior of these copper-modified oxygen transporters. (7) It was found that OXMN009P improved the reactivity and oxygen transfer properties due to copper impregnation. The kinetic parameters obtained in the TGA indicate that the reaction is non-thermal and requires less energy to initiate. (8) The results show that OXMN009P has reactivity comparable to other manganese-based materials reported in the literature and can be an effective option for carbon dioxide capture. This paper establishes a design method for the autothermal dual circulating fluidized bed reactor (DCFBR) of the coal-fueled in-situ gasification chemical looping combustion (iG-CLC) process. This method, grounded in a self-consistent phenomenological model, comprehensively elucidates the factors of mass and energy conservation, fuel and oxygen carrier (OC) reaction processes, and fluidization characteristics within the reactor. It is particularly suitable for the rapid screening of numerous potential designs, obtaining detailed design parameters, and studying their interrelationships. Utilizing this method, the regulation patterns of dual-bed interactive transport-reaction phenomena within a 5 MWth iG-CLC DCFBR are studied. Firstly, the effects of key design parameters on the OC circulation rate and bed inventory are analyzed. Following this, the impacts of circulation rate on the interactive heat and mass transfer between two beds are examined, delineating a reasonable range for the control of autothermal CLC process (circulation rate of 50–90 kg/m2s, temperature difference of 30–90 °C, OC conversion of 0.2–0.35, and oxygen-fuel ratio of 3–6). Subsequently, this paper investigates the influences of main design parameters on the performance metrics, such as gas/solid fuel conversion, operational costs, and operational benefits. It is found that the carbon stripper significantly enhances the carbon capture efficiency of the device, provided that its separation efficiency is maintained above 70–95 %. Sensitivity analysis is employed to study the response patterns of performance metrics to changes in input parameters. Ultimately, based on these analyses, a design scheme for the 5 MWth reactor is determined, with a detailed examination of the pressure balance state of the reactor under the design conditions, and the balanced material and energy flows at the reactor inlets and outlets.

The calcium looping integrated with the chemical looping combustion (CaL-CLC) process is an efficient and cost-effective CO2 capture technology that avoids the energy-intensive air separation unit in the calcium looping (CaL) process. However, in these CaL-CLC and CaL system integration schemes, the carbonation heat is utilized for steam generation, resulting a significant temperature difference and considerable irreversible loss. To prevent temperature mismatch, this paper proposes a novel Ca-Cu looping post-combustion CO2 capture method with thermochemical recuperation based on steam methane reforming. Additionally, a novel system integrated with turbine exhaust heat recovery is introduced to effectively reduce carbon emissions from flue gas. Results show that the proposed system has superior performance compared to the reference system based on the Ca-Cu looping method. The specific primary energy consumption for CO2 avoidance decreased from 2.40 MJLHV/kg CO2 in the reference system to 2.02 MJLHV/kg CO2. Exergy analysis indicates that a total of 3.0 % reduction in exergy destruction can be achieved in chemical reaction processes and heat recovery processes, contributing to the superior performance of the proposed system. Furthermore, the effects of key operating parameters indicate that cascaded turbine exhaust recovery is essential for improving the thermodynamic efficiency of the proposed system. Overall, recovering the mid-temperature carbonation heat via thermochemical regeneration and integrating with exhaust heat recovery contribute to reducing SPECCA, thus providing a promising low-energy-consumption alternative for CO2 capture.

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) has been validated as one of the most promising technologies for fossil fuel combustion, which can produce high-purity CO2 streams ready for capture and sequestration in power production. The selection of an appropriate oxygen carrier is one of the most important issues for the CLC process, and the reduction kinetics investigation of the oxygen carrier with fuel gas can provide the basis for CLC reactor design and simulation optimization. In this study, copper ore was chosen as an oxygen carrier, and the oxygen release property of copper ore under a nitrogen environment at various temperatures (1073–1193 K) was first investigated in a thermogravimetric analyzer (TGA). Subsequently, the reduction kinetics of copper ore with CO and H2 were evaluated by the TGA at temperatures ranging from 773 K to 1073 K, using a continuous stream of 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, and 30 vol. % of CO or H2 balanced by CO2 or N2. It was found that the reaction rates of these reactions accelerated with the increase in temperature and fuel gas concentration in inlet gas. Both the oxygen release process of copper ore and the reduction process of copper ore with reducing gases can be described by the unreacted shrinking core model (USCM). The reaction mechanism function for the oxygen-releasing and reduction process of copper ore oxygen carrier was varied. The activation energy of the oxygen-releasing process, reduction process with CO, and reduction process with H2 were calculated as 99.35, 5.08, and 4.28 kJ/mol, respectively. The pre-exponential factor ranged from 1.96 × 10−1 to 1.84 × 103. The reaction order depended on the fuel gas, which was 1 and 0.86, respectively, for reaction with CO and H2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Chemical looping combustion (CLC) offers a novel approach to simultaneous power generation and carbon capture. However, the commercial viability of CLC depends on durable and cost‐effective oxygen carriers (OCs). This study assesses the impact of water vapor (WV) on the attrition of red mud OC, crucial for industrial CLC deployment. Findings indicate a significant reduction in the average attrition rate, from 0.06%/h to 0.03%/h, attributed to the limitation of Fe2O3 reduction, resulting in reduced volumetric and temperature changes in the presence of WV. A developed volume‐based model reveals attrition contributions in the order of chemical > mechanical >> thermal stresses, influencing OC particle surface morphology. Remarkably, the formation of the iron‐oxide layer remains unaffected by WV, reducing agents (CO or H2), or superficial velocities, suggesting scalable iron recovery from attrition with enhanced flexibility in future applications. Bioenergy with carbon capture and storage (BECCS) or utilization (BECCU) allows net zero or negative carbon emissions and can be a breakthrough technology for climate change mitigation. This work consists of an energetic, exergetic, and economic analysis of an integrated process based on chemical looping combustion of solar-torrefied agro-industrial residues, followed by methanation of the concentrated CO2 stream with green H2. Four agro-industrial residues and four Italian site locations are considered. Depending on the considered biomass, the integrated plant processes about 18–93 kg h−1 of raw biomass and produces 55–70 t y−1 of synthetic methane. Global exergetic efficiencies ranged within 45–60% and 67–77% when neglecting and considering, respectively, the valorization of torgas. Sugar beet pulp and grape marc required a non-negligible input exergy flow for the torrefaction, due to the high moisture content of the raw biomasses. However, for these biomasses, the water released during drying/torrefaction and CO2 methanation could be recycled to the electrolyzer to eliminate external water consumption, thus allowing for a more sustainable use of water resources. For olive stones and hemp hurd, this water recycling brings, instead, a reduction of approximately 65% in water needs. A round-trip electric efficiency of 28% was estimated assuming an electric conversion efficiency of 40%. According to the economic analysis, the total plant costs ranged within 3–5 M€ depending on the biomass and site location considered. The levelized cost of methane (LCOM) ranged within 4.3–8.9 € kgCH4−1 but, if implementing strategies to avoid the use of a large temporary H2 storage vessel, can be decreased to 2.6–5.3 € kgCH4−1. Lower values are obtained when considering hemp hurd and grape marc as raw biomasses, and when locating the PV field in the south of Italy. Even in the best scenario, values of LCOM are out of the market if compared to current natural gas prices, but they might become competitive with the introduction of a carbon tax or through government incentives for the purchase of the PV field and/or electrolyzer. Effective decarbonization of the power generation sector requires a multi-pronged approach, including the implementation of CO2 capture and storage (CCS) technologies. The Graz cycle features oxy-combustion CO2 capture in a power production scheme which can result in higher thermal efficiencies than that of a combined cycle. However, the auxiliary consumption required by the air separation unit to provide pure O2 results in a significant energy penalty relative to an unabated plant. In order to mitigate this penalty, the present study explores the possibility of chemical looping combustion (CLC) as an alternative means to supply oxygen for conversion of the fuel. For a midscale power plant, despite reducing the levelized cost of electricity (LCOE) by approximately 12.6% at a CO2 tax of EUR 100/ton and a natural gas price of EUR 6.5/GJ and eliminating the energy penalty of CCS relative to an unabated combined cycle, the cost reductions of CLC in the Graz cycle were not compelling relative to commercially available post-combustion CO2 capture with amines. Although the central assumptions yielded a 3% lower cost for the Graz-CLC cycle, an uncertainty quantification study revealed an 85.3% overlap in the interquartile LCOE range with that of the amine benchmark, indicating that the potential economic benefit is small compared to the uncertainty of the assessment. Thus, this study indicates that the potential of CLC in gas-fired power production is limited, even when considering highly efficient advanced configurations like the Graz cycle. During chemical looping combustion (CLC) and chemical looping gasification (CLG) of coal, the release, migration, and speciation of mercury in coal are significantly influenced by oxygen-carrier materials; however, the underlying mechanism remains inadequately addressed. In this work, the effect of a typical iron-based oxygen carrier on the release behavior of mercury from a bituminous coal and a lignite was investigated based on the Ontario-Hydro method. It is found that the effect of the iron-based oxygen carrier is attributed to three aspects: the enhanced release rate of mercury from coal, the adsorption of the released mercury, and the oxidization of gaseous Hg0 into Hg2+. With the increasing temperature, the adsorbance of mercury by the iron-based oxygen carrier decreases, while the oxidation of mercury enhances. Even at 900 °C, the adsorbance of mercury by the oxygen carrier remained at 0.1687 g/g, with a relative content of Hg2+ at 22.55%. Additionally, it was observed that iron-based oxygen carriers can physically absorb both Hg0 and Hg2+, while chemisorption refers to complex-compound formation between the iron-based oxygen carrier and mercury. Among the approaches to facilitating negative CO2 emissions is biochar production. Biochar is generated in the pyrolysis of certain biomasses. In the pyrolysis process, carbon in the biomass is turned into a solid, porous, carbon-rich, and stable material that can be captured from the soil after a period of from a few decades to several centuries. In addition to this long-term carbon sequestration role, biochar is also beneficial for soil performance as it helps to restore soil fertility and improves the retention and diffusion of water and nutrients. This work presents a Life Cycle Assessment of different pyrolysis approaches for biochar production. Biomass pyrolysis is performed in a fixed-bed reactor, which operates at a mild temperature (550 °C). Biochar is obtained as solid product of the pyrolysis, but there are also liquid (bio-oil) and gaseous products (syngas). The pyrolysis gas is partly used to fulfil the energy demand of the pyrolysis process, which is highly endothermic. In the conventional approach, CO2 is produced during the combustion of syngas and emitted to the atmosphere. Another approach to facilitate CO2 capture and thus obtain more negative CO2 emissions in the pyrolysis process is burning syngas and bio-oil in a Chemical Looping Combustion unit. Life Cycle Assessment was performed of these approaches toward biomass pyrolysis to evaluate their environmental impact. The Chemical Looping Combustion approach significantly reduced the values of 7 of the 16 environmental impact indicators studied, along with the Global Warming Potential among them, it slightly increased the value of one indicator related to the use of fossil resources, and it maintained the values of the remaining 8 indicators. Environmental impact reduction occurs due to the avoidance of CO2 and NOx emissions with Chemical Looping Combustion. The CO2 balances of the different pyrolysis approaches with Chemical Looping Combustion configurations were compared with a base case, which constituted the direct combustion of wheat straw to obtain thermal energy. Direct biomass combustion for the production of 17.1 MJ of thermal energy had CO2 positive emissions of 0.165 kg. If the gaseous fraction was burned by Chemical Looping Combustion, CO2 was captured and the emissions became increasingly negative, until a value of −3.30 kg/17.1 MJ was generated. If bio-oil was also burned by this technology, the negative trend of CO2 emissions continued, until they reached a value of −3.66 kg. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Global population growth requires the use of various natural resources to satisfy the basic needs of humanity. Fossil fuels are mainly used to produce electricity, transportation and the artificial air conditioning of habitats. Nevertheless, countries around the world are looking for alternative energy sources due to the decrease in the availability of these fuels and their high environmental impact. The mixture of hydrogen and carbon monoxide (H2 + CO), commonly called syngas, is a high-value feedstock for various industrial applications. By varying the composition of syngas, especially the H2/CO molar ratio, it can be used to produce methanol, fuels or synthetic natural gas. However, when this ratio is very low, the separation of this gas usually represents a great problem when making the energy balance, which is why it is proposed to adapt a combustion process in chemical cycles, taking advantage of the energy of this gas, reducing the energy impact of the process. During the present project, mass and energy balances were developed for combustion in chemical cycles, using ilmenite as a carrier, integrating heat exchangers to take advantage of the residual energy at the output of the process, to preheat the inlet current in the regenerator. Here, a comparative was made at different temperatures of the air stream and evaluating the mechanism of the ilmenite when a syngas stream is used as fuel. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
