Abstract

L-type voltage-gated calcium channels are involved in multiple physiological functions. Currently available antagonists do not discriminate between L-type channel isoforms. Importantly, no selective blocker is available to dissect the role of L-type isoforms Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 that are concomitantly co-expressed in the heart, neuroendocrine and neuronal cells. Here we show that calciseptine, a snake toxin purified from mamba venom, selectively blocks Cav1.2 -mediated L-type calcium currents (ICaL) at concentrations leaving Cav1.3-mediated ICaL unaffected in both native cardiac myocytes and HEK-293T cells expressing recombinant Cav1.2 and Cav1.3 channels. Functionally, calciseptine potently inhibits cardiac contraction without altering the pacemaker activity in sino-atrial node cells, underscoring differential roles of Cav1.2− and Cav1.3 in cardiac contractility and automaticity. In summary, calciseptine is a selective L-type Cav1.2 Ca2+ channel blocker and should be a valuable tool to dissect the role of these L-channel isoforms.

Abstract

We have measured the cross section of the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction for E_cm = 185.8 keV, 134.7 keV and 111.7 keV using a radioactive 7Be target (132 mCi). Single and coincidence spectra of beta^+ and alpha particles from 8B and 8Be^* decay, respectively, were measured using a large acceptance spectrometer. The zero energy S factor inferred from these data is 18.5 +/- 2.4 eV b and a weighted mean value of 18.8 +/- 1.7 eV b (theoretical uncertainty included) is deduced when combining this value with our previous results at higher energies., Comment: Accepted for publication in Phys. Abstract

Cross sections for the 7Be(p,gamma)8B reaction have been measured for E_c.m.= 0.35-1.4 MeV using radioactive 7Be targets. Two independent measurements carried out with different beam conditions, different targets and detectors are in excellent agreement. A statistical comparison of these measurements with previous results leads to a restricted set of consistent data. The deduced zero-energy S-factor S(0) is found to be 15-20% smaller than the previously recommended value. This implies a 8B solar neutrino flux lower than previously predicted in various standard solar models., Comment: 14 pages, Latex, To appear in Phys. Rev. Lett

Abstract

The exploration of the fundamental nature of matter is the central quest of high-energy physics. In particular, collisions of particles at energies above [10.sup.11] eV are required to test some [...], Plasmas are an attractive medium for the next generation of particle accelerators because they can support electric fields greater than several hundred gigavolts per meter. These accelerating fields are generated by relativistic plasma waves--space-charge oscillations--that can be excited when a high-intensity laser propagates through a plasma. Large currents of background electrons can then be trapped and subsequently accelerated by these relativistic waves. In the forced laser wake field regime, where the laser pulse length is of the order of the plasma wavelength, we show that a gain in maximum electron energy of up to 200 megaelectronvolts can be achieved, along with an improvement in the quality of the ultrashort electron beam.

Abstract

This report is about Germany's integration system.Germany is a “reluctant” immigration country. Despite its post-World-War-II history ofimmigration, Germany has never adopted a coherent strategy or policy of integration.Immigration was considered a transitory phenomenon as the notorious term “guest workers”suggests. Considering the expected return of immigrants to their countries of origin,integration policy making has long remained implicit.Recent processes of refugee immigration have opened a policy window for a more proactiveapproach to immigration and integration. However, the formulation and implementation ofintegration policies are situated in a setting of double complexity. First, integration is a crosscuttingpolicy issue which connects to the responsibilities of various federal ministries.Second, it is a multi-level system in which policy making and monitoring largely take placeon the federal level. However, the actual implementation is mainly realized on the level ofregional states and municipalities. At least since 2016, integration measures (as those stipulated on Asylum Package II forexample), point to the competing and paternalistic logic of retaining control over refugees.This is accomplished by the imposition of restrictions on movement and the expansion ofvalue education as part of the integration courses. It is also supported by a logic of humancapital, which privileges refugees as to their economic value whilst restricting basic rights,such as the freedom of movement. Individuals applying for asylum in Germany live highlyrestricted lives subject to accountability, compliance and punitive measures. While the “Asylum Packages” and the “Integration Act” have mainly focused on structuralintegration through labour market inclusion, the “Migration Masterplan” has emphasizedsociocultural aspects, such as identification and acculturation. It’s obvious that mostinitiatives respond to an alleged public expectation of refugees smoothly fitting in the societyrather than to the actual demands of support and participation which they may have.

Abstract

The report focuses on reception policies and practices in Germany between 2011 and 2018. In the reporting period, Germany has received more than two Million asylum applicants, mainly from Syria, Afghanistan, Iran and Iraq, but also from the Balkans as well as North and sub-Saharan Africa. Within Germany, there are two major legal sources related to reception, i.e. the Asylum Act (Asylgesetz) and the Asylum Seekers Benefits Act (Asylbewerberleistungsgesetz). The Asylum Act outlines the process under which asylum is applied for and granted in Germany. The Asylum Seekers Benefits Act defines specific government benefits for asylum seekers including monthly payments for living expenses and health care services. The crosscutting and multilevel nature of reception fosters an incoherence of migration policies and practices within and across different levels of migration governance (European, national, regional, municipal). This fragmentary constellation is reinforced by the federalist and corporatist structure of the German polity and, in effect, leads to substantial insecurity of both asylum applicants and immigration administrators. Since 2015, reception policies have increasingly adopted a paradigm of “Integrated Refugee Management” which builds on logics of detention and control and involves a set of punitive measures to sanction non-compliance. The isolationist nature of this approach can severely compromise the capabilities of refugees and entails the risk of impeding social and structural integration. Although speeding up asylum decisions has become a central policy goal since 2015, our data points to many instances of protracted reception, i.e. a continuance of refugees within the reception regime for more than six months. An important reason apart from the high numbers of applications in the years 2015 and 2016 has been the frequent relocation of asylum applicants within Germany - “politics of dispersal”.

Abstract

Using significant technological breakthroughs and unconventional approaches, the goal of the in situ probing of glacier ice for a better understanding of the orbital response of climate (SUBGLACIOR) project is to advance ice core research by inventing, constructing and testing an in situ probe to evaluate if a target site is suitable for recovering ice as old as 1.5 million years. Embedding a laser spectrometer, the probe is intended to make its own way down into the ice and to measure, in real time and down to the bedrock, the depth profiles of the ice dD water isotopes as well as the trapped CH4 gas concentration and dust concentration. The probe descent is achieved through electromechanical drilling combined with continuous meltwater sample production using a central melting finger in the drill head. A key aspect of the project lies in the design and implementation of an efficient method to continuously transfer to the surface the ice chips being produced by the drill head and from the refreezed water expulsed downstream from the melting finger, into the borehole. This paper presents a detailed calculation and analysis of the flow rates and pressure conditions required to overcome friction losses of the drilling fluid and to effectively transport ice chips to the surface.
