Abstract

Objective·To evaluate the changes in cognitive function in overweight and obese adolescents, and explore the association between cognitive function and fibroblast growth factor 21 (FGF21).Methods·A total of 175 adolescents from a senior high school in Shanghai were divided into normal weight group (n=50), overweight group (n=50) and obese group (n=75) based on their body mass index (BMI). General information, anthropometric data and laboratory testing indicators of the adolescents were collected and compared. The cognitive function of the three groups of adolescents was assessed by using the accuracy (ACC) and reaction time of Flanker task and n-back task. Enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) was used to detect the serum FGF21 level of the three groups of adolescents. Partial correlation analysis and multiple linear regression model were used to evaluate the correlation between cognitive task performance and anthropometric data and laboratory testing indicators.Results·Compared with the normal weight group, systolic blood pressure, diastolic blood pressure, and the levels of fasting plasma glucose, glycosylated hemoglobin and triacylglycerol in the obese group were higher (all P

Abstract

The urgent demand for stable and highly efficient bifunctional electrocatalysts for the oxygen reduction/evolution reactions (ORR/OER) is pivotal in advancing energy conversion and storage technologies. Herein, we introduce a metal–organic framework (MOF)-derived bifunctional electrocatalyst Fe3Co-NC@900, featuring synergistically coupled dual single-atom sites (Fe/Co–Nx) and core–shell Co3Fe7@C nanoparticles. Leveraging the synergistic interactions of Fe–Nx sites with associated Co–Nx sites and core–shell nanoparticles within the MOF-derived nitrogen-doped mesoporous sheets and nanotubes, Fe3Co-NC@900 demonstrates outstanding ORR and OER performance, outpacing the Fe-NC@900 catalyst fabricated without Co incorporation. Specifically, it demonstrates superior ORR performance with a higher half-wave potential (E1/2) of 0.88 V and a small Tafel slope of 62.1 mV dec−1, surpassing the Pt/C benchmark (E1/2 of 0.82 V) and Fe-NC@900 (E1/2 of 0.788 V). Additionally, it demonstrates noteworthy OER performance, requiring a 1.572 V overpotential at 10 mA cm−2 current density, resulting in a significant bifunctional activity with a potential gap (ΔE) of 0.692 V, surpassing the Pt/C + Ir/C combination (ΔE = 0.748 V). Moreover, serving as a bifunctional air electrode, Fe3Co-NC@900 exhibits excellent performance in lab-made Zn–air batteries, with outstanding open circuit voltage, specific capacity, and cycling stability (>650 cycles), outpacing the Pt/C + Ir/C-based battery. Abstract

The ongoing shift from Defined Benefit (DB) pension plans to Defined Contribution (DC) pension plans in private sectors has transferred investment risk and longevity risk from pension providers to individuals. Professional advice on how to best generate retirement incomes from accumulated pension savings is therefore in great demand. A common solution is buying an immediate annuity; however the immediate annuity market has long been experiencing low demand. Another solution is following a safe drawdown rate during retirement; however this exposes retirees to the risk of outliving their pension savings. In recent years, behavioral factors have been successful in explaining individuals’ decision-making process, this thesis is therefore devoted to the investigation of the low demand of immediate annuities by considering behavioral models; and the use of annuity products in optimal decumulation strategy designs. This thesis has two major contributions. First, both Cumulative Prospect Theory (CPT) and Hyperbolic discount model can explain the low demand of immediate annuities and suggest that people would be willing to purchase deferred annuities. This has laid a research foundation for introducing and promoting the deferred annuity product. Second, we provide an optimal partial annuitisation strategy involving deferred annuities in a utility maximisation decumulation plan. In the proposed strategy the retirement period is divided into two stages: a stage where pensioners use their savings to cover their living expenses and a second stage where a payment stream from deferred annuities is available. This strategy effectively helps retirees manage the longevity risk at advanced ages and turns the drawdown plan from accumulated savings into an easier decision than before – because of a fixed rather than unknown drawdown period.

30. TMSB10 promotes gastric cancer proliferation and glycolysis based on activation of AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.

Abstract

Objective To investigate the expression of Thymosinβ10 (TMSB10) in gastric cancer and its molecular mechanism in promoting the progression of gastric cancer. Methods We collected pathological sections of 70 patients with gastric cancer in our hospital, detected expression of TMSB10 in gastric adenocarcinoma by immunohistochemistry, and analyzed its prognostic effect. In order to study the mechanism of action, the effects of TMSB10 on the proliferation and glycolysis of gastric cancer cells and its related mechanism were observed by transfection technique, CCK8 test, EDU assay, Transwell assay, scratch test, glycolysis assay and Western blot. Results Immunohistochemistry showed that TMSB10 was highly expressed in gastric cancer, while the expression level of TMSB10 was correlated with tumor size (P = 0.032, TNM stage (P = 0.002) and distant metastasis. In the mechanism study, we found that overexpression of TMSB10 promoted the proliferation, invasion, migration and glycolytic phenotype of gastric cancer cells through in vitro CCK-8 test, EDU assay, Transwel assay and glycolysis assay, and vice versa. Western blot results showed that overexpression of TMSB10 may regulate the occurrence of gastric cancer through up-regulation of the AMPK/mTOR signaling pathway.
