12. Cultural interactions during the Zhou period (c.a. 1000-350 B.C.) : a study of networks from the Suizao corridor

Abstract

This thesis concerns about cultural interactions during the Zhou period of China (c.a. 1000-350 B.C.) between the Suizao corridor (near the present-day Yangtze River region) and its contemporaries within or outside the Zhou realm. It mainly, but not exclusively, concentrates on bronze ritual vessels from the Suizao corridor, and discusses the underlying social and political relations between the dominant cultures and the regional ones in this particular area (the Zeng state for example), which are central to understanding the ways in which the dominant cultures joined their disparate territories into a whole. Newly excavated archaeological evidence show that there were at least three periods when people in the Suizao corridor learned about the current traditions employed elsewhere, which are: 1) Yejiashan period (from the 11th to 10th century B.C.); 2) post-Ritual Reform period (from the mid-9th to mid-7th century B.C.); and 3) Marquis Yi's period (from the mid-6th to mid-4th century B.C.). In these periods, local people in the Suizao corridor were involved in networks of enormous and constantly changing complexity, in which people, objects, practices, and ideas were mixed together through interregional contacts. The choices of local people in adopting foreign materials and ideas from either the dominant cultures or other places heavily depended on the subjective view of their social identity, which can be constructed, maintained, or transited to adapt to different social and political environments.

Abstract

A study of the weathering process of three types of stones, sandstone, marble, and granite, which are commonly found in artifacts worldwide, is presented. Freeze–thaw cycles are used to accelerate changes in the stone's physical properties, such as the surface morphology, mass, and porosity. Pulsed infrared thermography, as an in situ non-destructive testing method, is adopted to measure the stone's thermal properties, such as the diffusivity, effusivity, and conductivity. These thermal parameters influence the natural weathering process, and in turn can change with the decay of the stone materials. Preliminary experimental results show that all three types of stone experience a process of mass loss and porosity increase after the freeze–thaw cycles, and their thermal properties change differently depending on their types. Since the thermal effusivity can be obtained non-destructively by reflectance thermography, we propose for the first time the use of thermal effusivity to characterize the influence of the weathering process and as an indicator of the aging degree of stone artifacts. The smaller dataset achieved an accuracy of 91.25% using frequencies of 50 most common functional words, dependency relations, and Part-of-speech (POS) tags as features, and the larger dataset achieved 69.18% accuracy using a similar feature set with 100 most common functional words. In addition to performing author attribution, a user test showed the potentials of the model in generating author similarities and hence being useful in an applied setting for recommending books to readers based on author style. Stilometri har mest fokuserat på författarbestämning, där uppgiften är att avgöra vem som skrivit en viss text där författaren är okänd, givet tidigare texter med kända författare. I denna stude valdes ett antal lexikala och syntaktiska stilistiska särdrag vilka användes för att bestämma författare. Abstract

This study aims to investigate how dimensionality reduction of neuroimaging data prior to training support vector machines (SVMs) affects the classification accuracy of bipolar disorder. This study uses principal component analysis (PCA) for dimensionality reduction. An open source data set of 19 bipolar and 31 control structural magnetic resonance imaging (sMRI) samples was used, part of the UCLA Consortium for Neuropsychiatric Phenomics LA5c Study funded by the NIH Roadmap Initiative aiming to foster breakthroughs in the development of novel treatments for neuropsychiatric disorders. The images underwent smoothing, feature extraction and PCA before they were used as input to train SVMs. 3-fold cross-validation was used to tune a number of hyperparameters for linear, radial, and polynomial kernels. Experiments were done to investigate the performance of SVM models trained using 1 to 29 principal components (PCs). Several PC sets reached 100% accuracy in the final evaluation, with the minimal set being the first two principal components. Accumulated variance explained by the PCs used did not have a correlation with the performance of the model. The choice of kernel and hyperparameters is of utmost importance as the performance obtained can vary greatly. The results support previous studies that SVM can be useful in aiding the diagnosis of bipolar disorder, and that the use of PCA as a dimensionality reduction method in combination with SVM may be appropriate for the classification of neuroimaging data for illnesses not limited to bipolar disorder. Due to the limitation of a small sample size, the results call for future research using larger collaborative data sets to validate the accuracies obtained. A process that has become increasingly more common in companies is thesales and operations planning (S&OP) process which aims to match demand with supply. With theenvironmental concern growing in interest it is becoming more important for companies to reuse aproduct in order to utilize the remaining value of the product. This if often only done if there isfinancial gains from the commitment. This is done in a closed loop supply chain where OriginalEquipment Manufacturers (OEM) takes back and remanufacture, refurbish and repair used products.With a growing interest in closed loop supply chains it is becoming increasingly more important forcompanies to be efficient in this area as well. The focal company of this study is working with theirsales and operations planning process as well as with remanufactured products in order to becomemore efficient with their processes they want to integrate the remanufactured products, in this studycalled R2 products into the already existing S&OP process. The aim of this study was hence toinvestigate what complexities that may arise when remanufactured products are integrated into anS&OP process, i.e. what challenges that would occur when remanufactured products were brought into the S&OP process. The case design included semi-structured interviews as the main data source. The results of the studyshowed that complexities may arise in all five steps of the S&OP process. The main findings showedthat the biggest impact of integration would be in the first two stages of the five step process, havingthe most complexities. This study has both academic and managerial implications. In academia thestudy contributes with knowledge in an interface which at the time of this study has been paid verylittle attention in research. This study also provides researchers with a conceptual framework whichcan be tested in other settings and used as a basis for further evaluation of this interface. Themanagerial implications comes from having the possibility by this study to know potential areas thatwill need extra attention before an integration of remanufactured products is conducted. Theframework presented in this study can provide managers with a checklist to follow in the integrationprocess. 42. Renovation of Apartment Buildings- Energy Efficiency and Profitability

Abstract

In today’s society a large focus is put on energy systems and how our energy systems are built up. In order to make sure that we in the future still can enjoy the living standards that we are used to today, Sweden and EU have made a number of decisions on making our energy system more energy efficient and consequently reduce the usage of energy resources. By 2020 the European Union should have reduced its energy consumption by 20 % compared to 1990’s level, and by 2050, 50%. The building sector comprises a large part of Sweden’s national energy usage, and therefore strict requirements are put on improvements on the energy usage in buildings, in the near future. The goal of this study is to develop strategies on different energy efficiency measures that building owners can implement when refurbishing multifamily apartment buildings, where the technical energy saving measures and the economic incentives come hand-in-hand.The object of study is a multifamily apartment building in Södermalm, owned by a property owner. The heating of the building comes from district heating. The property is built in 1962 and will in the near future be deeply renovated. Many current heating and ventilation solutions in the building are outdated and there is great potential for improvements.A study visit to the property was carried out in order to investigate the condition of the building and thereby discover where the largest improvement potentials are and to see what energy saving measures, e.g. a supply and exhaust ventilation system with heat recovery, or low energy windows, are possible to implement in the building. The study visit showed that many of the new technologies that can be adopted in general in connection with renovation actually have the possibly to be implemented in the studied property. A wide range of areas where energy effectivising measures could be taken are studied, including old windows that leak large amounts of heat, and the fact that there is no heat recovery in the building.In order to know which measures that are suitable to implement in the studied building, an investigation on different technologies and measures for making buildings more energy efficient was carried out. Both established and traditional measures and new technologies are studied.A model for energy savings have been developed, where a simulation program and energy calculation formulas have been used. The profitability of different energy efficiency measures are analyzed using the Life Cycle Cost, LCC method, using results obtained from the technical analysis. The conclusion made from the results and analysis is that improvements in the energy performance in windows is profitable, and should if possible be made by changing the inner glass to an isolating glass, and in the cases where current windows must be replaced, by changing them to triple-glass windows with a low U-value. If the building owner presupposes a large increase in energy prices in the future, then additional isolation for the façade of the building should also be installed. According to this research a supply and exhaust ventilation system with heat recovery should be installed since this measure led to the largest economic profit. I dagens samhälle läggs stort fokus på energisystemet och hur vårt energisystem är uppbyggt. För att säkra att vi i framtiden också kommer kunna åtnjuta den levnadsstandard som man är van vid i västvärlden så har Sverige och EU fattat flertalet beslut om att effektivisera systemet och därmed minska användningen av energiresurserna. Till 2020 ska EU ha minskat sin energikonsumtion med 20 % jämfört med 1990s nivå, och med 50 % till 2050. Fastighetssektorn står för en stor del av energianvändningen och av den anledningen så ställs hårda krav på förbättringar av energiprestandan i bostäder inom en snar framtid. Målet med denna undersökning är att ta fram förslag på olika energisparande åtgärder som fastighetsägare kan implementera i samband med en renovering av flerbostadshus där de energisparande åtgärderna och ekonomiska incitament går hand i hand.Objektet för denna studie är en fastighet på Södermalm, ägt av en fastighetsfirma. Uppvärmning i fastigheten sker via fjärrvärme. Fastigheten byggdes 1962 och kommer inom en snar framtid att genomgå ett stambyte. Många av uppvärmnings och ventilationslösningarna är idag föråldrade, och det finns stor potential för förbättringar.Studiebesök i fastigheten genomfördes för att upptäcka var de största förbättringspotentialerna finns och för att se vilka nya energiåtgärder, t.ex. FTX-ventilationssystem och lågenergifönster, som är möjliga att implementera. Studiebesöket visade att många av de nya tekniker som kan implementeras vid renoveringar generellt faktiskt har förutsättningar att implementeras i just den fastigheten som studeras. Områdena som kan energieffektiviseras innefattar alltifrån att fönstren är mycket gamla och läcker mycket värme till att det inte finns någon återvinning av frånluften ifrån lägenheterna.För att veta vad som är lämpligt att implementera i den utvalda fastigheten har en undersökning om olika tekniker för energieffektivisering genomförts. Både etablerade traditionella åtgärder och nya innovativa åtgärder studeras.En modell för energibesparing har tagits fram, där simuleringsprogram och formler för beräkning av energianvändningen har använts. Utifrån resultaten från modellen har de olika åtgärderna analyserats ekonomiskt med LCC-kalkylering. Resultaten från modellen antyder att fönster alltid bör förbättras, helst genom byte till isolerruta när det är möjligt, och i de fall hela fönstren måste bytas sätter man in 3-glasfönster med låga u-värden. Ifall företaget räknar med en hög ökning på energipriser i framtiden så bör man även tilläggsisolera fasaden på fastigheten. FTX-system bör utifrån de uppnådda resultaten i undersökningen införas, då detta ledde till den största ekonomiska lönsamheten.

Abstract

In today’s society a large focus is put on energy systems and how our energy systems are built up. In order to make sure that we in the future still can enjoy the living standards that we are used to today, Sweden and EU have made a number of decisions on making our energy system more energy efficient and consequently reduce the usage of energy resources. By 2020 the European Union should have reduced its energy consumption by 20 % compared to 1990’s level, and by 2050, 50%. The building sector comprises a large part of Sweden’s national energy usage, and therefore strict requirements are put on improvements on the energy usage in buildings, in the near future. The goal of this study is to develop strategies on different energy efficiency measures that building owners can implement when refurbishing multifamily apartment buildings, where the technical energy saving measures and the economic incentives come hand-in-hand.The object of study is a multifamily apartment building in Södermalm, owned by a property owner. The heating of the building comes from district heating. The property is built in 1962 and will in the near future be deeply renovated. Many current heating and ventilation solutions in the building are outdated and there is great potential for improvements.A study visit to the property was carried out in order to investigate the condition of the building and thereby discover where the largest improvement potentials are and to see what energy saving measures, e.g. a supply and exhaust ventilation system with heat recovery, or low energy windows, are possible to implement in the building. The study visit showed that many of the new technologies that can be adopted in general in connection with renovation actually have the possibly to be implemented in the studied property.
