The roton-triggered charge-density-wave (CDW)is widely studied in fractional quantum Hall (FQH) and fractional Chern insulator (FCI) systems, and there also exist field theoretical and numerical realizations of continuous transition from FCI to superfluid (SF). However, the theory and numerical explorations of the transition between FCI and supersolid (SS) are still lacking. In this work, we study the topological flat-band lattice models with $\nu$ = 1/2 hard-core bosons, where the previous studies have discovered the existence of FCI states and possible direct FCI-SS transitions. While the FCI is robust, we find the direct FCI-SS transition is absent, and there exist more intriguing scenarios. In the case of checkerboard lattice, we find an intermediate gapless CDW state without SF, sandwiched between FCI and SS. This novel state is triggered by the roton instability in FCI and it further continuously brings about the intertwined finite-momentum SF fluctuation when the CDW order is strong enough, eventually transiting into an unconventional finite-momentum SS state. The intermediate gapless CDW state is a vestige from the SS state, since the increasing quantum fluctuation melts only the Larkin-Ovchinnikov-type SF order in SS but its (secondary) product -- the CDW order -- survives. On honeycomb lattice, we find no evidence of SS, but discover an interesting sequence of FCI-Solid I-Solid II transitions, with both solids incompressible. Moreover, in contrast to previous single-roton condensation, this sequence of FCI-Solid I-Solid II transitions is triggered by the softening of multi-roton modes in FCI. Considering the intertwined wave vectors of the CDW orders, Solid I is a vestige of Solid II. Our work provides new horizon not only for the quantum phase transitions in FCI but also for the intertwined orders and gapless states in bosonic systems, which will inspire future studies.

The properties of fractional Chern insulator (FCI) phase and the phase transitions between FCI and Mott insulators (MI) in bosonic systems are well studied. The continuous transitions between FCI and superfluid (SF), however, despite the inspiring field theoretical predictions, have not been directly verified. The existing numerical results of FCI-SF transition are either indirect or clearly first-order. Here, by simply tuning the bandwidth of Haldane honeycomb lattice model, we find direct transitions from a bosonic FCI at $\nu$ = 1/2 filling of a flat Chern band to two SF states with bosons condensed at momenta $M$ and $\Gamma$, respectively. While the FCI-SF($M$) transition is first-order, the FCI-SF($\Gamma$) transition is found continuous. Through finite size criticality analysis, the obtained critical exponents $\beta\approx$0.35(5) and $\nu\approx$0.62(12) are both compatible with those of the 3D XY universality class and more exotic beyond-Landau ones. Our work thence presents a direct numerical evidence of a continuous FCI-SF transition between topological ordered phase and spontaneous continuous symmetry-breaking phase, and further indicates the zero-field bosonic FCI might be realized from a SF state by gradually flattening the dispersion of Chern band, through the (quasi)adiabatic preparation in ultracold atom systems.

Novel critical phenomena beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm have been long sought after. Among many candidate scenarios, the deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) constitutes the most fascinating one, and its lattice model realization has been debated over the past two decades. Following the pioneering works with the fuzzy sphere methods [W. Zhu, et al, Phys. Rev. X 13, 021009], we apply the spherical Landau level regularization to study the effective (2+1)D SO(5) non-linear sigma model with a topological term and the potential DQCP therein. Utilizing the state-of-the-art density matrix renormalization group method with explicit $\text{SU(2)}_\text{spin}\times\text{U(1)}_\text{charge}\times\text{U(1)}_\text{angular-momentum}$ symmetry as well as exact diagonalization simulations, we provide a comprehensive phase diagram for the model with a SO(5) continuous transition line -- extension of the previous identified SO(5) multicritical point [arXiv:2307.05307] -- while tuning interaction length. The state-operator correspondence with the conformal tower structure is used to identify the emergent conformal symmetry with the best scaling dimension of relevant primary fields and they match well with the critical exponents obtained from the crossing point analysis of the correlation ratio. The recent developments in twisted MoTe$_2$ and rhombohedral multilayer graphene have generated widespread attention to the general features of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states, including their possible coexistence with and transition to various symmetry breaking charge ordered states. These attentions are pushing forward our knowledge of the relation between the topological order in FQAH states and the Landau-type of symmetry breaking order such as the 1D smectic electronic liquid crystal and 2D charge-density-wave (CDW) solid. Although the transitions from topological states to symmetry breaking states with trivial topology have been discussed, the road from one topological ordered state to another with the same Hall conductance and broken translational symmetry has not been found. Here we show the intriguing evidence that the FQAH to FQAH Smectic (FQAHS) transition is robustly realizable in the archetypal correlated flat Chern-band model at filling $\nu$ = 2/3. This transition is novel in that: i) the FQAHS acquires the same fractional Hall conductance as FQAH, which cannot be explained by mean-field band folding. The formation of smectic order can be viewed as perturbation around the transition point, and thus, do not destroy or change the original topology; ii) the charge excitation remains gapped across the transition although the neutral gap is closed at transition point; and iii) the transition is triggered by the softening of roton mode with the same wave vector as the smectic order. Our discovery opens countless new possibilities, both theoretical and experimental, in the fast-growing field of robust fractional Chern insulators.

The interplay of topological order and charge order exhibits rich physics. Recent experiments that succesfully realized the frational quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) effect in twisted MoTe$_2$ bilayers and rhombohedral multilayer graphene without external magnetic field further call for deeper understanding of the relation between topological order and charge order in quantum moir\'e materials. In the archetypal correlated flat-band model on checkerboard lattice, a FQAH smectic state with coexistent topological order and smectic charge order has been numerically discovered at filling $\nu$ = 2/3. In this work, we explore the global ground-state phase diagram of the model with competing interactions and find a C = 2/3 FQAH phase surrounded by four different charge density wave (CDW) phases. In particular, we identify a FQAH-CDW transition triggered by roton condensation, in that, the minimal roton gap continues to decrease at the same finite momentum, along with the diverging density flucuations at the transition point, after which the system enters into a CDW metal phase with the same ordered wavevector. Our discovery points out that the charge-neutral roton modes can play a significant role in a transition from FQAH topological order to CDW symmetry-breaking order, discussed in FQH literature while severely neglected in FQAH systems.

Symmetry-breaking orders can not only compete with each other, but also be interwined, and the interwined topological and symmetry-breaking orders make the situation more intriguing. This work examines the archetypal correlated flat band model on a checkerboard lattice at filling $\nu=2/3$ and we find the unique interplay between smectic charge order and topological order gives rise to two novel quantum states. As the interaction strength increases, the system first transitions from a Fermi liquid into FQAH smectic (FQAHS) state, where FQAH topological order coexists cooperatively with smectic charge order with enlarged ground-state degeneracy and interestingly, the Hall conductivity is $\sigma_{xy}=\nu=2/3$, different from the band-folding or doping scenarios. Further increasing the interaction strength, the system undergoes another quantum phase transition and evolves into a polar smectic metal (PSM) state. This emergent PSM is an anisotropic non-Fermi liquid, whose interstripe tunneling is irrelevant while it is metallic inside each stripe. Different from the FQAHS and conventional smectic orders, this PSM spontaneously breaks the two-fold rotational symmetry, resulting in a nonzero electric dipole moment and ferroelectric order. In addition to the exotic ground states, large-scale numerical simulations are also used to study low-energy excitations and thermodynamic characteristics. We find the onset temperature of the incompressible FQAHS state, which also coincides with the onset of non-polar smectic order, is dictated by the magneto-roton modes. Above this onset temperature, the PSM state exists at intermediate-temperature regime. Although the T = 0 quantum phase transition between PSM and FQAHS is first order, the thermal FQAHS-PSM transition could be continuous. We expect the features of the exotic states and thermal phase transitions could be accessed in future experiments.

Integer and fractional Chern insulators have been extensively explored in correlated flat band models. Recently, the prediction and experimental observation of fractional quantum anomalous Hall (FQAH) states with spontaneous time-reversal-symmetry breaking have garnered attention. While the thermodynamics of integer quantum anomalous Hall (IQAH) states have been systematically studied, our theoretical knowledge on thermodynamic properties of FQAH states has been severely limited. Here, we delve into the general thermodynamic response and collective excitations of both IQAH and FQAH states within the paradigmatic flat Chern-band model with remote band considered. Our key findings include: i) In both $\nu$ = 1 IQAH and $\nu$ = 1/3 FQAH states, even without spin fluctuations, the charge-neutral collective excitations would lower the onset temperature of these topological states, to a value significantly smaller than the charge gap, due to band-mixing and multi-particle scattering; ii) By employing large-scale thermodynamic simulations in FQAH states in the presence of strong inter-band mixing between C = $\pm1$ bands, we find that the lowest collective excitations manifest as the zero-momentum excitons in the IQAH state, whereas in the FQAH state, they take the form of magneto-rotons with finite momentum; iii) The unique charge oscillations in FQAH states are exhibited with distinct experimental signatures, which we propose to detect in future experiments.

Exponential observables, formulated as $\log \langle e^{\hat{X}}\rangle$ where $\hat{X}$ is an extensive quantity, play a critical role in study of quantum many-body systems, examples of which include the free-energy and entanglement entropy. Given that $e^{X}$ becomes exponentially large (or small) in the thermodynamic limit, accurately computing the expectation value of this exponential quantity presents a significant challenge. In this Letter, we propose a comprehensive algorithm for quantifying these observables in interacting fermion systems, utilizing the determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) method. We have applied this novel algorithm to the 2D half-filled Hubbard model. At the strong coupling limit, our method showcases a significant accuracy improvement compared to conventional methods that are derived from the internal energy. We also illustrate that this novel approach delivers highly efficient and precise measurements of the nth R\'enyi entanglement entropy. Even more noteworthy is that this improvement comes without incurring increases in computational complexity. In the field of correlated electron materials, the relation between the resonating spin singlet and antiferromagnetic states has long been an attractive topic for understanding of the interesting macroscopic quantum phenomena, such as the ones emerging from magnetic frustrated materials, antiferromagnets and high-temperature superconductors. SrCu2(BO3)2 is a well-known quantum magnet, and it is theoretically expected to be the candidate of correlated electron material for clarifying the existence of a pressure-induced deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), featured by a continuous quantum phase transition, between the plaquette-singlet (PS) valence bond solid phase and the antiferromagnetic (AF) phase. However, the real nature of the transition is yet to be identified experimentally due to the technical challenge. Here we show the experimental results for the first time, through the state-of-the-art high-pressure heat capacity measurement, that the PS-AF phase transition of the pressurized SrCu2(BO3)2 at zero field is clearly a first-order one. Our result clarifies the more than two-decade long debates about this key issue, and resonates nicely with the recent quantum entanglement understanding that the theoretically predicted DQCPs in representative lattice models are actually a first-order transition. Intriguingly, we also find that the transition temperatures of the PS and AF phase meet at the same pressure-temperature point, which signifies a bi-critical point as those observed in Fe-based superconductor and heavy-fermion compound, and constitutes the first experimental discovery of the pressure-induced bi-critical point in frustrated magnets. Novel critical phenomena beyond the Landau-Ginzburg-Wilson paradigm have been long sought after. We perform density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) simulation with SU(2)$_\mathrm{spin}\times$U(1)$_\mathrm{charge}\times$U(1)$_\mathrm{angular-momentum}$ symmetries explicitly implemented. Using crossing point analysis for the critical properties of the DMRG data, accompanied by quantum Monte Carlo simulations, we accurately obtain the comprehensive phase diagram of the model and find various novel quantum phases, including N\'eel, ferromagnet (FM), valence bond solid (VBS), valley polarized (VP) states and a gapless quantum disordered phase occupying extended area of the phase diagram. The VBS-Disorder and N\'eel-Disorder transitions are continuous with non-Wilson-Fisher exponents. Our results show the VBS and N\'eel states are separated by either a weakly first-order transition or the disordered region with a multicritical point in between, thus opening up more interesting questions on the two-decade long debate on the nature of DQCP., Comment: 23 pages, 19 figures

Quadratic band touching (QBT) points are widely observed in 2D and 3D materials, including bilayer graphene and Luttinger semimetals, and attract significant attention from theory to experiment. However, even in its simplest form, the 2D checkerboard lattice QBT model, the phase diagram characterized by temperature and interaction strength still remains unknown beyond the weak-coupling regime. Intense debates persist regarding the existence of various interaction-driven insulating states in this system. To address these uncertainties, we employ thermal tensor network simulations, specifically exponential tensor renormalization group and tangent space tensor renormalization group, along with density matrix renormalization group calculations to provide a comprehensive finite-temperature phase diagram for this model and shed light on previous ambiguities. Notably, our findings reveal the emergence of a robust bond-nematic Dirac semimetal phase with distinct thermodynamic properties that set it part from the nematic insulating state and other symmetry broken states. This previously overlooked feature is found to be ubiquitous in interacting QBT systems. We also discuss the implications of these results for experimental systems such as bilayer graphene and iridate compounds.

Accurate simulations of the two-dimensional (2D) Hubbard model constitute one of the most challenging problems in condensed matter and quantum physics. Here we develop a tangent space tensor renormalization group (tanTRG) approach for the calculations of the 2D Hubbard model at finite temperature. An optimal evolution of the density operator is achieved in tanTRG with a mild $O(D^3)$ complexity, where the bond dimension $D$ controls the accuracy. With the tanTRG approach we boost the low-temperature calculations of large-scale 2D Hubbard systems on up to a width-8 cylinder and $10\times10$ square lattice. For the half-filled Hubbard model, the obtained results are in excellent agreement with those of determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC). Moreover, tanTRG can be used to explore the low-temperature, finite-doping regime inaccessible for DQMC. The calculated charge compressibility and Matsubara Green's function are found to reflect the strange metal and pseudogap behaviors, respectively. The superconductive pairing susceptibility is computed down to a low temperature of approximately $1/24$ of the hopping energy, where we find $d$-wave pairing responses are most significant near the optimal doping. Equipped with the tangent-space technique, tanTRG constitutes a well-controlled, highly efficient and accurate tensor network method for strongly correlated 2D lattice models at finite temperature., Comment: 7+14 pages, 5+14 figures

The fermion disorder operator has been shown to reveal the entanglement information in 1D Luttinger liquids and 2D free and interacting Fermi and non-Fermi liquids emerging at quantum critical points(QCP). Here we study, by means of large-scale quantum Monte Carlo simulation, the scaling behavior of disorder operator in correlated Dirac systems. We first demonstrate the logarithmic scaling behavior of the disorder operator at the Gross-Neveu (GN) chiral Ising and Heisenberg QCPs, where consistent conformal field theory (CFT) content of the GN-QCP in its coefficient is found. Then we study a 2D monopole free deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP) realized between a quantum-spin Hall insulator and a superconductor. Our data point to negative values of the logarithmic coefficients such that the DQCP does not correspond to a unitary CFT. Density matrix renormalization group calculations of the disorder operator on a 1D DQCP model also detect emergent continuous symmetries., Comment: 16 pages, 18 figures

Recently, a robust $d$-wave superconductivity has been unveiled in the ground state of the 2D $t$-$t'$-$J$ model -- with both nearest-neighbor ($t$) and next-nearest-neighbor ($t'$) hoppings -- through the density matrix renormalization group calculations in the ground state. In this study, we exploit the state-of-the-art thermal tensor network approach to accurately simulate the finite-temperature electron states of the $t$-$t'$-$J$ model on cylinders with widths up to $W=6$. Our analysis suggests that in the dome-like superconducting phase, the $d$-wave pairing susceptibility exhibits a divergent behavior with $\chi_\textrm{SC} \propto 1/T^\alpha$ below the onset temperature $T_c^*$. Near the optimal doping, $T_c^*$ reaches its highest value of about $0.05 t$ ($\equiv 0.15 J$). Above $T_c^*$ yet below a higher crossover temperature $T^*$, the magnetic susceptibility is suppressed, and the Fermi surface also exhibits node-antinode structure, resembling the pseudogap behaviors observed in cuprates. Our unbiased and accurate thermal tensor network calculations obtain the phase diagram of the $t$-$t'$-$J$ model with $t'/t>0$, shedding light on the $d$-wave superconducting and pseudogap phases in the enigmatic cuprate phase diagram., Comment: 7+5 pages, 4+8 figures

We show that for magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) away from charge neutrality, although quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) simulations suffer from the sign problem, the computational complexity is at most polynomial at certain integer fillings. For even integer fillings, this polynomial complexity survives even if an extra inter-valley attractive interaction is introduced, on top of Coulomb repulsions. This observation allows us to simulate magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene and to obtain accurate phase diagram and dynamical properties. At the chiral limit and filling $\nu=1$, the simulations reveal a thermodynamic transition separating metallic state and a $C=1$ correlated Chern insulator -- topological Mott insulator (TMI) -- and the pseudogap spectrum slightly above the transition temperature. The ground state excitation spectra of the TMI exhibit a spin-valley U(4) Goldstone mode and a time reversal restoring excitonic gap smaller than the single particle gap. These results are qualitatively consistent with the recent experimental findings at zero-field and $\nu=1$ filling in $h$-BN nonaligned TBG.

Motivated by recent development of the concept of the disorder operator and its relation with entanglement entropy in bosonic systems, here we show the disorder operator successfully probes many aspects of quantum entanglement in fermionic many-body systems. From both analytical and numerical computations in free and interacting fermion systems in 1D and 2D, we find the disorder operator and the entanglement entropy exhibit similar universal scaling behavior, as a function of the boundary length of the subsystem, but with subtle yet important differences. In 1D they both follow the $\log{L}$ scaling behavior with the coefficient determined by the Luttinger parameter for disorder operator, and the conformal central charge for entanglement entropy. In 2D they both show the universal $L\log L$ scaling behavior in free and interacting Fermi liquid states, with the coefficients depending on the geometry of the Fermi surfaces. However at a 2D quantum critical point with non-Fermi-liquid state, extra symmetry information is needed in the design of the disorder operator, so as to reveal the critical fluctuations as does the entanglement entropy. Our results demonstrate the fermion disorder operator can be used to probe quantum many-body entanglement related to global symmetry, and provides new tools to explore the still largely unknown territory of highly entangled fermion quantum matter in 2 or higher dimensions., Comment: 13 pages, 7 figures with 8 pages supplemental material

While the ground state phase diagram of the correlated flat-band systems have been intensively investigated, the dynamic and thermodynamic properties of such lattice models are less explored, but it is the latter which is most relevant to the experimental probes (transport, quantum capacitance and spectroscopy) of the quantum moir\'e materials such as twisted bilayer graphene and transition metal dichalcogenides. Here we show, by means of momentum-space quantum Monte Carlo and exact diagonalization, there exists a unique thermodynamic characteristic for the correlated flat-band models with interaction-driven quantum anomalous Hall (QAH) ground state, namely, the transition from the QAH insulator to the metallic state takes place at a much lower temperature compared with the zero-temperature single-particle gap generated by the long-range Coulomb interaction. Such low transition temperature comes from the proliferation of excitonic particle-hole excitations, which "quantum teleport" the electrons across the gap between different topological bands to restore the broken time-reversal symmetry and give rise to a pronounced enhancement in the charge compressibility. We introduce a many-body topological invariant, called the topological disorder parameter (TDP), to characterize gapped quantum phases with global internal symmetry in (2+1)d. TDP is defined as the constant correction that appears in the ground state expectation value of a partial symmetry transformation applied to a connected spatial region $M$, the absolute value of which scales generically as $\exp(-\alpha l+\gamma)$ where $l$ is the perimeter of $M$ and $\gamma$ is the TDP. Motivated by a topological quantum field theory interpretation of the operator, we show that $e^\gamma$ can be related to the quantum dimension of the symmetry defect, and provide a general formula for $\gamma$ when the entanglement Hamiltonian of the topological phase can be described by a (1+1)d conformal field theory (CFT). A special case of TDP is equivalent to the topological R\'enyi entanglement entropy when the symmetry is the cyclic permutation of the replica of the gapped phase. We then investigate several examples of lattice models of topological phases, both analytically and numerically, in particular when the assumption of having a CFT edge theory is not satisfied. We also consider an example of partial translation symmetry in Wen's plaquette model and show that the result can be understood using the edge CFT. We develop a nonequilibrium increment method in quantum Monte Carlo simulations to obtain the R\'enyi entanglement entropy of various quantum many-body systems with high efficiency and precision. To demonstrate its power, we show the results on a few important yet difficult $(2+1)d$ quantum lattice models, ranging from the Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnet with spontaneous symmetry breaking, the quantum critical point with O(3) conformal field theory (CFT) to the toric code $\Z_2$ topological ordered state and the Kagome $\Z_2$ quantum spin liquid model with frustration and multi-spin interactions. In all these cases, our method either reveals the precise CFT data from the logarithmic correction or extracts the quantum dimension in topological order, from the dominant area law in finite-size scaling, with very large system sizes, controlled errorbars and minimal computational costs. Our method therefore establishes a controlled and practical computation paradigm to obtain the difficult yet important universal properties in highly entangled quantum matter.

Topological Mott insulator (TMI) with spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking and nonzero Chern number has been discovered in a real-space effective model for twisted bilayer graphene (TBG) at 3/4 filling in the strong coupling limit. However, the finite temperature properties of such a TMI state remain illusive. In this work, employing the state-of-the-art thermal tensor network and the perturbative field-theoretical approaches, we obtain the finite-$T$ phase diagram and the dynamical properties of the TBG model. The phase diagram includes the quantum anomalous Hall and charge density wave phases at low $T$, and a Ising transition separating them from the high-$T$ symmetric phases. Due to the proliferation of excitons -- particle-hole bound states -- the transitions take place at a significantly reduced temperature than the mean-field estimation. The exciton phase is accompanied with distinctive experimental signatures in such as charge compressibilities and optical conductivities close to the transition. Our work explains the smearing of the many-electron state topology by proliferating excitons and opens the avenue for controlled many-body investigations on finite-temperature states in the TBG and other quantum moir\'e systems., Comment: 5+15 pages, 4+12 figures

In quantum materials, the electronic interaction and the electron-phonon coupling are, in general, two essential ingredients, the combined impact of which may drive exotic phases. Recently, an anomalously strong electron-electron attraction, mediated by phonons, has been unveiled in one-dimensional copper-oxide chain Ba$_{2-x}$Sr$_x$CuO$_{3+\delta}$. Yet, it is unclear how this strong near-neighbor attraction $V$ influences the superconductivity pairing in the compound. Here we perform accurate many-body calculations to study the extended Hubbard model with on-site Coulomb repulsion $U>0$ and attraction $V<0$ that well describes the cuprate chain and likely other similar transition-metal materials with both strong correlations and lattice effects. We find a rich quantum phase diagram containing an intriguing Tomonaga-Luttinger liquid phase -- besides the spin density wave and various phase separation phases -- that can host dominant spin-triplet pairing correlations and divergent superconductive susceptibility. Upon doping, the spin-triplet superconducting regime can be further broadened in the parameter space and extends to larger $U$, offering a feasible mechanism to realize $p$-wave superconductivity in realistic cuprate chains., Comment: 8+9 pages, 6+9 figures

We design generative neural networks that generate Monte Carlo configurations with complete absence of autocorrelation from which only short Markov chains are needed before making measurements for physical observables, irrespective of the system locating at the classical critical point, fermionic Mott insulator, Dirac semimetal, or quantum critical point. We further propose a network-initialized Monte Carlo scheme based on such neural networks, which provides independent samplings and can accelerate the Monte Carlo simulations by significantly reducing the thermalization process. We demonstrate the performance of our approach on the two-dimensional Ising and fermion Hubbard models, and expect it can systematically speed up the Monte Carlo simulations especially for the very challenging many-electron problems.

The interplay between spin frustration and charge fluctuation gives rise to an exotic quantum state in the intermediate-interaction regime of the half-filled triangular-lattice Hubbard model, while the nature of the state is under debate. Using the density matrix renormalization group with SU(2)$_{\rm{spin}} \otimes $U(1)$_{\rm{charge}}$ symmetries implemented, we study the triangular-lattice Hubbard model defined on the long cylinder geometry up to circumference $W=6$. A gapped quantum spin liquid, with on-site interaction $9 \lesssim U / t \lesssim 10.75$, is identified between the metallic and the antiferromagnetic Mott insulating phases. In particular, we find that this spin liquid develops a robust long-range spin scalar-chiral correlation as the system length $L$ increases, which unambiguously unveils the spontaneous time-reversal symmetry breaking. In addition, the degeneracy of the entanglement spectrum supports symmetry fractionalization and spinon edge modes in the obtained ground state. The possible origin of chiral order in this intermediate spin liquid and its relation to the rotonlike excitations have also been discussed., Comment: 8+6 pages, 7+8 figures

Interacting spins in quantum magnet can cooperate and exhibit exotic states like the quantum spin liquid. To explore the materialization of such intriguing states, the determination of effective spin Hamiltonian of the quantum magnet is thus an important, while at the same time, very challenging inverse many-body problem. To efficiently learn the microscopic spin Hamiltonian from the macroscopic experimental measurements, here we propose an unbiased Hamiltonian searching approach that combines various optimization strategies, including the automatic differentiation and Bayesian optimization, etc, with the exact diagonalization and many-body thermal tensor network calculations. We showcase the accuracy and powerfulness by applying it to training thermal data generated from a given spin Hamiltonian, and then to realistic experimental data measured in the spin-chain compound Copper Nitrate and triangular-lattice materials TmMgGaO4. This automatic Hamiltonian searching constitutes a very promising approach in the studies of the intriguing spin liquid candidate magnets and correlated electron materials in general., Comment: typos corrected and Fig.5 updated

Magic-angle twisted bilayer graphene has recently become a thriving material platform realizing correlated electron phenomena taking place within its topological flat bands. Several numerical and analytical methods have been applied to understand the correlated phases therein, revealing some similarity with the quantum Hall physics. In this work, we provide a Mott-Hubbard perspective for the TBG system. Employing the large-scale density matrix renormalization group on the lattice model containing the projected Coulomb interactions only, we identify a first-order quantum phase transition between the insulating stripe phase and the quantum anomalous Hall state with the Chern number of $\pm 1$. Our results not only shed light on the mechanism of the quantum anomalous Hall state discovered at three-quarters filling, but also provide an example of the topological Mott insulator, i.e., the quantum anomalous Hall state in the strong coupling limit., Comment: 6+7 pages, 3+7 figures

Understanding quantum many-body states of correlated electrons is one main theme in modern condensed matter physics. Given that the Fermi-Hubbard model, the prototype of correlated electrons, has been recently realized in ultracold optical lattices, it is highly desirable to have controlled numerical methodology to provide precise finite-temperature results upon doping, to directly compare with experiments. Here, we demonstrate the exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) algorithm [Phys. Rev. X 8, 031082 (2018)], complemented with independent determinant quantum Monte Carlo (DQMC) offer a powerful combination of tools for this purpose. XTRG provides full and accurate access to the density matrix and thus various spin and charge correlations, down to unprecedented low temperature of few percents of the fermion tunneling energy scale. We observe excellent agreement with ultracold fermion measurements at both half-filling and finite-doping, including the sign-reversal behavior in spin correlations due to formation of magnetic polarons, and the attractive hole-doublon and repulsive hole-hole pairs that are responsible for the peculiar bunching and antibunching behavior of the antimoments., Comment: 12 pages, 11 figures

Tensor renormalization group (TRG) constitutes an important methodology for accurate simulations of strongly correlated lattice models. Facilitated by the automatic differentiation technique widely used in deep learning, we propose a uniform framework of differentiable TRG ($\partial$TRG) that can be applied to improve various TRG methods, in an automatic fashion. Essentially, $\partial$TRG systematically extends the concept of second renormalization [PRL 103, 160601 (2009)] where the tensor environment is computed recursively in the backward iteration, in the sense that given the forward process of TRG, $\partial$TRG automatically finds the gradient through backpropagation, with which one can deeply "train" the tensor networks. We benchmark $\partial$TRG in solving the square-lattice Ising model, and demonstrate its power by simulating one- and two-dimensional quantum systems at finite temperature. The deep optimization as well as GPU acceleration renders $\partial$TRG manybody simulations with high efficiency and accuracy., Comment: 13 pages, 9 figures

Frustrated magnets host the promises of material realizations of new paradigm of quantum matter, while direct comparison of unbiased model calculations with experimental measurements is still very challenging. Here, we design and implement a protocol of employing many-body computation methodologies for accurate model calculation -- both equilibrium and dynamical properties -- of a frustrated rare-earth magnet TmMgGaO$_4$ (TMGO), which perfectly explains the corresponding experimental findings. Our results confirm TMGO is an ideal realization of triangular-lattice Ising model with an intrinsic transverse field. The magnetic order of TMGO is predicted to melt through two successive Kosterlitz-Thouless (KT) phase transitions, with a floating KT phase in between. The dynamical spectra calculated suggest remnant images of a vanishing magnetic stripe order that represent vortex-antivortex pairs, resembling rotons in a superfluid helium film. TMGO therefore constitutes a rare quantum magnet for realizing KT physics and we further propose experimental detections of its intriguing properties., Comment: 18 pages, 5 figures, supplementary information

In this work, we benchmark the well-controlled and numerically accurate exponential thermal tensor renormalization group (XTRG) in the simulation of interacting spin models in two dimensions. Finite temperature introduces a thermal correlation length, which justifies the analysis of finite system size for the sake of numerical efficiency. In this paper we focus on the square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (SLH) and quantum Ising models (QIM) on open and cylindrical geometries up to width $W=10$. We explore various one-dimensional mapping paths in the matrix product operator (MPO) representation, whose performance is clearly shown to be geometry dependent. We benchmark against quantum Monte Carlo (QMC) data, yet also the series-expansion thermal tensor network results. Thermal properties including the internal energy, specific heat, and spin structure factors, etc., are computed with high precision, obtaining excellent agreement with QMC results. XTRG also allows us to reach remarkably low temperatures. For SLH we obtain at low temperature an energy per site $u_g^*\simeq -0.6694(4)$ and a spontaneous magnetization $m_S^*\simeq0.30(1)$, which is already consistent with the ground state properties. We extract an exponential divergence vs. $T$ of the structure factor $S(M)$, as well as the correlation length $\xi$, at the ordering wave vector $M=(\pi,\pi)$, which represents the renormalized classical behavior and can be observed over a narrow but appreciable temperature window, by analysing the finite-size data by XTRG simulations. For the QIM with a finite-temperature phase transition, we employ several thermal quantities, including the specific heat, Binder ratio, as well as the MPO entanglement to determine the critical temperature $T_c$., Comment: 16 pages, 16 figures

The anomalous thermodynamic properties of the paradigmatic frustrated spin-1/2 triangular lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet (TLH) has remained an open topic of research over decades, both experimentally and theoretically. Here we further the theoretical understanding based on the recently developed, powerful exponential tensor renormalization group (XTRG) method on cylinders and stripes in a quasi one-dimensional (1D) setup, as well as a tensor product operator approach directly in 2D. The observed thermal properties of the TLH are in excellent agreement with two recent experimental measurements on the virtually ideal TLH material Ba$_8$CoNb$_6$O$_{24}$. Remarkably, our numerical simulations reveal two crossover temperature scales, at $T_l/J \sim 0.20$ and $T_h/J\sim 0.55$, with $J$ the Heisenberg exchange coupling, which are also confirmed by a more careful inspection of the experimental data. We propose that in the intermediate regime between the low-temperature scale $T_l$ and the higher one $T_h$, the gapped "roton-like" excitations are activated with a strong chiral component and a large contribution to thermal entropies, which suppress the incipient 120$^\circ$ order that emerges for temperatures below $T_l$., Comment: 4+15 pages, 4 + 16 figures
